DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 150003
SWODY1
SPC AC 150001

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0701 PM CDT FRI SEP 14 2007

VALID 150100Z - 151200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ...

..CAROLINAS...

WIDESPREAD CONVECTION HAS EVOLVED WITHIN VERY MOIST PLUME ALONG
FAVORED ZONE OF LOW LEVEL CONFLUENCE FROM NRN SC INTO CNTRL NC.
MANY OF THESE STORMS HAVE EXHIBITED ROTATION AT TIMES...A FEW OF
WHICH HAVE PRODUCED ISOLATED TORNADOES. IT APPEARS LOW LEVEL SHEAR
ALONG THIS BAROCLINIC ZONE IS PARTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR BRIEF TORNADO
ACTIVITY. WITH TIME NUMEROUS STORM MERGERS AND DIURNAL COOLING WILL
HAVE AN ADVERSE AFFECT REGARDING SUPERCELL STORM MODE...LIKELY
LEADING TO MORE MULTICELL-TYPE CLUSTERING WHICH SHOULD THEN RESULT
IN MAINLY GUSTY WINDS. FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS THOUGH...MORE
DISCRETE SUPERCELL STRUCTURES COULD PRODUCE ISOLATED TORNADOES.

..UPSTATE NY...

LARGE SCALE ASCENT IS NOW ACTING ON NRN EDGE OF MOIST WARM SECTOR
FROM WEST OF BGM TO ERN EDGE OF LAKE ERIE...WELL AHEAD OF COLD
FRONT. GREATEST RISK OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL OCCUR ALONG THIS
NARROW AXIS OF INSTABILITY WHERE SHEAR PROFILES ARE CERTAINLY MORE
THAN ADEQUATE FOR SUSTAINING ORGANIZED UPDRAFTS. AS COLD FRONT
INTERACTS WITH THIS ZONE OF INSTABILITY IT APPEARS ADDITIONAL
THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP. ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS AND SOME HAIL
COULD ACCOMPANY THE STRONGEST STORMS THROUGH EARLY EVENING.

SPC MCD 142344
NCZ000-150045-

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1968
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0644 PM CDT FRI SEP 14 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF CENTRAL AND ERN NC

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 142344Z - 150045Z

THREAT FOR TORNADOES MAY CONTINUE FOR A FEW MORE HOURS. HOWEVER...
GIVEN SHORT DURATION OF ADDITIONAL THREAT DUE TO ONSET OF BOUNDARY
LAYER STABILIZATION WITH LOSS OF DAY TIME HEATING...AND SLOW STORM
MOTION LIMITING AREAL COVERAGE...A WW IS UNLIKELY.

EARLY EVENING SURFACE ANALYSIS INDICATED A LOW PRESSURE CENTER...20
S RDU...THAT APPEARS TO BE ATTENDANT WITH THE REMNANTS OF HUMBERTO
PER TRENDS OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY. A SURFACE BOUNDARY
EXTENDED ENEWD FROM THIS LOW INTO NERN NC. LOCALLY BACKED SURFACE
WINDS ALONG THIS BOUNDARY COMBINED WITH VEERING WIND PROFILES WITH
HEIGHT PER RDU VAD ARE RESULTING IN FAVORABLE DEEP LAYER SHEAR FOR
STORM ORGANIZATION AND LOW LEVEL SRH VALUES /0-1 KM 250-280 M2/S2/
THAT ARE SUPPORTIVE OF TORNADOES. GIVEN THESE FACTORS THE SEVERE
WEATHER THREAT WITH ATTENDANT TORNADO POTENTIAL AND DAMAGING WINDS
ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER 2-3 HOURS IN A SMALL AREA
EXTENDING ENEWD FROM THE SURFACE LOW TO MARTIN/BERTIE COUNTIES.
BOUNDARY LAYER COOLING WITH THE LOSS OF DAY TIME HEATING WILL
INCREASE SURFACE BASED INHIBITION THIS EVENING RESULTING IN GRADUAL
DIMINISHING TREND OF SEVERE WEATHER THREAT.

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF NERN/CENTRAL INTO SWRN GA...SERN AL AND
PART OF WRN SC

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 142149Z - 142245Z

ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS...SOME APPROACHING SEVERE LEVELS...WILL
BE POSSIBLE INTO THE EARLY EVENING ACROSS WRN INTO CENTRAL/NERN GA
AND ADJACENT PARTS OF SC...WITH A SIMILAR THREAT ALSO POSSIBLE SWWD
INTO SWRN GA/SERN AL.

REGIONAL RADARS INDICATED A LINE OF TSTMS EXTENDING FROM 30 E ATL
SWWD INTO WEST CENTRAL GA...WITH A BROKEN LINE OF TSTMS ALSO MOVING
ESEWD THROUGH SERN/SRN AL. LATE AFTERNOON SURFACE ANALYSIS
INDICATED THESE STORMS WERE DEVELOPING ALONG A COLD FRONT ADVANCING
EWD THROUGH THE NERN GULF COAST STATES. LINEAR FORCING ALONG THE
FRONT AS IT MOVES INTO A MOIST/MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS COMBINED
WITH ASCENT ATTENDANT WITH REMNANTS OF HUMBERTO AND A SECOND MID
LEVEL IMPULSE WILL SUPPORT ADDITIONAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE
COLD FRONT. GIVEN THAT STRONGER DEEP LAYER SHEAR IS LAGGING THE
FRONT...ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS...SOME APPROACHING SEVERE
VALUES...ARE EXPECTED TO BE THE PRIMARY THREAT.

ONGOING WARM SECTOR TSTMS AND EVENTUAL ONSET OF BOUNDARY LAYER
COOLING STABILIZING THE PRE-FRONTAL AIR MASS SHOULD LIMIT THE EWD
EXTENT THAT THE LINE OF TSTMS CAN PROGRESS EWD.

AS A LARGE POLAR TROUGH CONTINUES TO DIG INTO THE GREAT LAKES/LOWER
OHIO VALLEY REGION...A WEAK MID-LEVEL PERTURBATION...ASSOCIATED WITH
THE REMNANTS OF HUMBERTO...APPEARS TO BE ACCELERATING NORTHEASTWARD
THROUGH THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS REGION. THIS IS SOMEWHAT
ENHANCING SOUTHWESTERLY LOWER MID TROPOSPHERIC FLOW FIELDS TO THE
LEE OF THE SOUTH CENTRAL APPALACHIANS...WHERE SURFACE WINDS MAINTAIN
A SIGNIFICANT EASTERLY COMPONENT...NEAR A REMNANT SURFACE FRONT.
THE BOUNDARY EXTENDS FROM A WEAK WAVE...SOUTHWEST OF WINSTON
SALEM...THROUGH CENTRAL/NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA...BUT MAY SHIFT
SLOWLY NORTHWARD ACROSS THE VIRGINIA/NORTH CAROLINA BORDER LATE THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING IN RESPONSE TO THE PROGRESSION OF THE UPPER
FEATURE. A MOIST THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT WITH WEAK MID LEVEL
LAPSE RATES AND ONLY WEAK TO MODERATE CAPE WILL LIMIT HAIL POTENTIAL
IN ASSOCIATED DEVELOPING CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY. AND...RATHER MODEST
MEAN ENVIRONMENT FLOW FIELDS WILL PROBABLY MINIMIZE DAMAGING WIND
POTENTIAL. BUT...MODERATE LOW-LEVEL AND DEEP LAYER SHEAR ALONG THE
SURFACE BOUNDARY COULD CONTRIBUTE TO ADDITIONAL ROTATING

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF HUMBERTO
WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE NEWD ACROSS N GA THIS AFTERNOON...THOUGH LOCAL
VWP/S SUGGEST THAT LOW-LEVEL FLOW HAS VEERED TO SWLY IN THE WARM
SECTOR AND THAT VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES ARE BECOMING LESS FAVORABLE
WITH TIME ACROSS GA/SC. FARTHER NE...A REMNANT FRONTAL
ZONE/MOISTURE GRADIENT EXTENDS FROM A WEAK LOW IN NWRN NC SEWD INTO
ERN NC. LOW-LEVEL SHEAR IS GREATER ALONG THIS NW-SE FRONT ACROSS
NC...WHERE LOCAL VWP/S SHOW 0-1 KM SRH OF ROUGHLY 100-125
M2/S2...AND NEAR 70 F DEWPOINTS ARE RESULTING IN LCL HEIGHTS BELOW
1000 M. GIVEN THE BROKEN BAND OF DISCRETE STORMS ALONG THIS FRONTAL
ZONE...THE THREAT FOR STORMS WITH SUPERCELL STRUCTURE AND PERHAPS A
BRIEF TORNADO OR TWO WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON BEFORE
DIMINISHING THIS EVENING.

..WRN NY/NW PA/FAR NE OH...
A COLD FRONT IS EVIDENT ON SFC ANALYSIS ACROSS SWRN ONTARIO
EXTENDING SWWD INTO WRN OH. VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS CLEARING
ACROSS NE OH...NW PA AND WRN NY AND THIS WILL ALLOW SFC TEMPS TO
CONTINUE WARMING ALONG THIS CORRIDOR. THIS COMBINED WITH INCREASING
LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE SHOULD ALLOW A LINE OF STORMS ACROSS SWRN
ONTARIO TO ORGANIZE AND MOVE SEWD ACROSS LAKE ERIE THIS AFTERNOON.
OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS INDICATES LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE NOW GREATER
THAN 7.5 C/KM FROM NRN NY EXTENDING SWWD INTO NE OH AND THIS
CORRIDOR SHOULD HAVE THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR A WIND DAMAGE THREAT
THIS AFTERNOON. DUE TO WEAK INSTABILITY...THE THREAT SHOULD REMAIN
MARGINAL. HAIL MAY ALSO ACCOMPANY THE STRONGER CELLS MAINLY IN WRN
NY WHERE MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE STEEPER AND 500 MB TEMPS ARE
SLIGHTLY COOLER.

..SE CO/NE NM/WRN KS...
SFC ANALYSIS SHOWS UPSLOPE FLOW IN PLACE ACROSS THE REGION AND A
MOIST AXIS EXISTS FROM WEST TX EXTENDING NWWD INTO NE NM. CONTINUED
SFC HEATING THIS AFTERNOON SHOULD ALLOW ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS TO
DEVELOP IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NE NM LATE THIS AFTERNOON.
OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS CURRENTLY SUGGEST MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE VERY
STEEP. IN ADDITION...FORECAST SOUNDINGS ACROSS NE NM SUGGEST
VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH FOR A MARGINAL SEVERE
WEATHER THREAT WITH ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE AND/OR HAIL POSSIBLE. THE
MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT MAY GRADUALLY DEVELOP EWD ACROSS FAR SE CO

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

A LARGE AREA OF SFC HIGH PRESSURE WILL BE IN PLACE ACROSS THE ERN
HALF OF THE U.S. SATURDAY WITH A COLD FRONT LOCATED ACROSS THE SRN
GULF COAST STATES. SEVERAL AREAS WITH THUNDERSTORMS MAY BE ONGOING
ALONG THE BOUNDARY SATURDAY MORNING. AS SFC HEATING TAKES
PLACE...NEW CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT SHOULD TAKE PLACE WITH THE
THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL SHIFTING SWD DURING THE DAY. INSTABILITY WILL
LIKELY BE STRONGEST ACROSS FL AND SRN GA SATURDAY AFTERNOON AS
SUGGESTED BY MODEL FORECASTS. HOWEVER...VERTICAL SHEAR SHOULD NOT BE
ADEQUATE FOR A MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT.

ISOLATED CONVECTION MAY ALSO DEVELOP ALONG A SFC TROUGH OVER THE
CNTRL HIGH PLAINS DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON WHERE MODEL FORECASTS
SHOW SBCAPE VALUES FROM 1000 TO 2000 J/KG. VERTICAL SHEAR SHOWN ON
FORECAST SOUNDINGS MAY BE STRONG ENOUGH FOR A MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT
BUT WILL NOT OUTLOOK THE AREA DUE TO UNCERTAINTY CONCERNING STORM
INITIATION AND CONVECTIVE COVERAGE. FURTHER EAST ACROSS THE MID-MO
VALLEY...ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS MAY DEVELOP SATURDAY EVENING BUT
FORECAST CONDITIONS THERE ALSO DO NOT APPEAR ADEQUATE FOR A MARGINAL

..WRN NY/PA AREA THIS EVENING...
A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL SURGE EWD FROM LOWER MI/INDIANA TO OH/WRN
PA/WRN NY BY EARLY TONIGHT. LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE/INSTABILITY ARE
QUITE LIMITED IN IMMEDIATE PROXIMITY TO THE FRONT...WHILE THE
SOMEWHAT RICHER MOISTURE PLUME EXISTS FARTHER TO THE E IN PA/NY.
GIVEN THE STRONG LINEAR FORCING ALONG THE FRONT...A NARROW BAND OF
LOW-TOPPED CONVECTION WITH STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE THIS
AFTERNOON INTO EARLY TONIGHT. THERE WILL ALSO BE SOME THREAT FOR
ISOLATED STORMS FARTHER E IN THE MOISTURE PLUME ACROSS PA/NY LATE
TODAY...BUT ANY SEVERE THREAT HERE SHOULD REMAIN MARGINAL AS A
RESULT OF WEAK INSTABILITY.

..NRN AL/GA THIS AFTERNOON...
THE REMNANTS OF TC HUMBERTO WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE ENEWD OVER NRN
AL/GA...ALONG A DIFFUSE BAROCLINIC ZONE THAT IS BEING REINFORCED BY
DIFFERENTIAL HEATING. LOCAL VWP/S AND 12Z SOUNDINGS SHOW SOME
POTENTIAL FOR SUPERCELLS WITHIN THE REMNANT CONVECTIVE
BANDS...THOUGH ANY TORNADO OR WIND DAMAGE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO
REMAIN BRIEF AND ISOLATED.

..SRN HIGH PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON/EARLY TONIGHT...
A STRONG COLD FRONT HAS MOVED SWD TO NEAR THE RED RIVER AND WWD TO
NEAR THE FRONT RANGE IN NE NM AND CO. AN UPSLOPE FLOW REGIME WILL
REMAIN TO THE N OF THE BOUNDARY ACROSS WRN KS/ERN CO/EXTREME NE
NM...WHERE A RELATIVELY COOL BOUNDARY LAYER AND THICK STRATUS WILL
LIMIT THE POTENTIAL FOR DAYTIME HEATING/DESTABILIZATION. THE ONLY
AREA WITH ANY REASONABLE THREAT FOR SURFACE-BASED STORMS THIS

ZONE. HERE...MODERATE INSTABILITY WITH BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN
THE 50S...AND MODEST VERTICAL SHEAR ALONG THE SRN FRINGE OF THE
WESTERLIES...MAY PROVE SUFFICIENT FOR ISOLATED ORGANIZED/SUPERCELL
STORMS. HOWEVER...STORM COVERAGE SHOULD REMAIN RATHER
SPARSE...ALONG WITH ANY ATTENDANT THREAT FOR HAIL/DAMAGING WINDS.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
FAST MOVING AND RELATIVELY DEEP TROUGH WILL SWEEP EWD FROM THE UPPER
MIDWEST INTO NY/PA DURING THE PERIOD. THIS WILL DRIVE A COLD
FRONT...CURRENTLY STRETCHING FROM THE ERN GREAT LAKES SWWD INTO THE
SRN PLAINS...SWD AND EWD TO THE ATLANTIC AND GULF COASTAL REGIONS BY
SATURDAY MORNING.

HUMBERTO/S REMNANT SURFACE LOW PRESSURE WAS LOCATED IN ERN MS NEAR
CBM AT 12Z AND SHOULD MOVE THROUGH NRN AL/GA TODAY AND INTO WRN NC
BY EVENING.

..OH/WRN NY/PA/ERN LOWER MI...
A BAND OF ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS WAS CO-LOCATED WITH THE FRONT
ACROSS LOWER MI THIS MORNING...WITHIN ZONE OF STRONG HEIGHT
FALLS/UVV. ALTHOUGH SOME MID/HIGH CLOUDS FROM HUMBERTO/S REMNANTS
WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA THIS MORNING...INCREASING WLY FLOW ALOFT
SHOULD HELP PUSH CLOUDS EWD...ALLOWING DIURNAL HEATING. ALTHOUGH
SURFACE DEWPOINTS ARE ONLY EXPECTED TO CLIMB INTO THE UPPER 50S...
TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 70S WOULD YIELD MLCAPES AROUND 500 J/KG.
DESPITE THE MARGINAL INSTABILITY...THE STRONGLY PACKED ISOTHERMS AND
20-30 KT WNWLY WINDS AT 850 MB...SHOULD SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A
FAST MOVING THUNDERSTORM LINE DEVELOPING ALONG THE FRONT BETWEEN
18Z-21Z ACROSS NRN OH. THIS LINE SHOULD MOVE EWD INTO WRN PA/NY BY
EARLY EVENING...WITH ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS POSSIBLE. ANY WIND
THREAT SHOULD DIMINISH AS THE STORMS MOVE EWD INTO CENTRAL
NY/PA...WHERE HEATING IS EXPECTED TO BE SOMEWHAT RESTRICTED DUE TO
CLOUDS SPREADING IN FROM THE SOUTHWEST.

..NERN NM/SERN CO/WRN KS ...
UPSLOPE FLOW...ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE LARGE SURFACE HIGH OVER THE
MO RIVER VALLEY REGION...WILL ENHANCE THE ASCENT ALONG THE EAST
SLOPES OF THE ROCKIES. THIS MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR ISOLATED STORMS TO
DEVELOP LATE THIS AFTERNOON ALONG THE HIGHER TERRAIN. THE SHEAR MAY
BE SUPPORTIVE OF SOME MID LEVEL ROTATION/SEVERE THREAT... THOUGH
STORM COVERAGE IS EXPECTED TO BE TOO ISOLATED FOR A SLIGHT RISK.
OVERNIGHT...STRENGTHENING LOW LEVEL JET SHOULD AID IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF ELEVATED STORMS...ROOTED AROUND 750 MB...TO DEVELOP
OVER WRN KS. ALTHOUGH HAIL IS POSSIBLE WITH THESE STORMS... MARGINAL
INSTABILITY AND WEAK SHEAR ABOVE 750 MB SHOULD INHIBIT A MORE
WIDESPREAD SEVERE THREAT.

..NRN AL ENEWD INTO WRN NC...
SURFACE LOW PRESSURE WAS NEAR CBM...WITH A WEAK BOUNDARY/WARM FRONT
EXTENDING EWD ACROSS NRN AL AND THEN NEWD TO NEAR THE TN/NC BORDER.
UPPER MIDWEST TROUGH SHOULD STRENGTHEN THE FLOW ALOFT ACROSS THE SRN
STATES...WITH SURFACE LOW PRESSURE EXPECTED TO ACCELERATE ALONG THE
WARM FRONT...AND INTO WRN NC BY EVENING. BHM 12Z SOUNDING SHOWS THAT
THE SHEAR PROFILES HAVE REMAINED STRONG NEAR THE LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM...POSSIBLY DUE TO FEEDBACK FROM CONVECTION LOCATED NEAR THE
CENTER. THE SEVERE THREAT HAS REMAINED LOW SINCE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE
BEEN EMBEDDED WITHIN A CLUSTER OF RAIN...WITH LITTLE EVIDENCE OF
STRONGER UPDRAFTS. IF WARMING CAN OCCUR JUST AHEAD OF THE LOW AND
ALONG THE WARM FRONT...AN ISOLATED TORNADO/WIND EVENT WOULD BE
POSSIBLE. HOWEVER...ATTM IT APPEARS THE ENEWD TRACK OF THE LOW WOULD
KEEP THE STRONGER SHEAR NORTH OF ANY APPRECIABLE WARMING...SO THE
THREAT FOR A TORNADO OR WIND DAMAGE APPEARS SLIM.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0321 AM CDT FRI SEP 14 2007

VALID 171200Z - 221200Z

..DISCUSSION...
MEDIUM RANGE MODELS ARE IN REASONABLE AGREEMENT OF MOVING CLOSED
LOW...CURRENTLY LOCATED OFF THE CA/ORE COAST...ENEWD AS AN OPEN AND
SLIGHTLY NEGATIVELY TILTED TROUGH ACROSS THE ROCKIES AND INTO THE
NRN PLAINS ON MON/DAY 4. COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM
SHOULD STRENGTHEN SLY WINDS AND GRADUALLY INCREASE BOUNDARY LAYER
MOISTURE...THOUGH SURFACE RIDGING FROM THE NERN STATES SWWD INTO TX
SHOULD LIMIT RETURN OF QUALITY GULF MOISTURE. HOWEVER...SWLY WINDS
ALOFT AND APPROACHING TROUGH SHOULD STEEPEN MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
AND PROVIDE SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY FOR THUNDERSTORMS. THE PRESENCE
OF THE UPPER TROUGH...STEEPER LAPSE RATES/INSTABILITY AND 50-60 KT
MID LEVEL WINDS INDICATES A THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS ACROSS THE NRN
PLAINS MON AFTERNOON/NIGHT. THE MREF IS A BIT SLOWER THAN THE
EUROPEAN/GFS...SO THE SEVERE WEATHER AREA HAS BEEN SHIFTED SLIGHTLY
WWD FROM PREVIOUS OUTLOOK.

A SEVERE WEATHER THREAT MAY ALSO EXTEND EWD INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST
ON TUE/DAY 5...BUT DE-AMPLIFYING TROUGH AND POSSIBILITY OF STRONGER
UVV SHIFTING INTO CANADA PRECLUDES AN AREA ATTM. FROM WED/DAY 6-
FRI/DAY 8...DEEP LOW IS FORECAST TO EVOLVE OVER THE WEST...BUT
BLOCKING RIDGE OVER THE ERN HALF OF THE NATION WILL PREVENT THIS
SYSTEM FROM MOVING EWD.
