DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0400 AM CST SUN FEB 10 2008

VALID 131200Z - 181200Z

..PREDICTABILITY IS TOO LOW TO DELINEATE A SEVERE THREAT AREA...

MEDIUM RANGE FORECAST GUIDANCE INDICATES THAT THE STRONG SHORT WAVE
IMPULSE...DIGGING INLAND OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES/U.S. CASCADES BY
12Z WEDNESDAY...WILL SPLIT OFF THE MAIN BELT OF POLAR WESTERLIES...
AND DIG INTO THE SOUTHWESTERN STATES...EVOLVING INTO A CLOSED LOW
DURING THE MID TO LATTER PART OF THE COMING WORK WEEK. MODELS
SUGGEST THAT THE SYSTEM WILL THEN EMERGE FROM THE SOUTHERN PLATEAU/
ROCKIES BY THE WEEKEND...AS THE NEXT IMPULSE ADVANCES INLAND AND
DIGS INTO THE NORTH CENTRAL STATES. AS THIS OCCURS...THERE APPEARS
TO BE POTENTIAL FOR STRONG SURFACE CYCLOGENESIS ACROSS PARTS OF THE
LOWER MISSISSIPPI/TENNESSEE VALLEYS...WHICH WOULD PROBABLY BE
ACCOMPANIED BY A SIGNIFICANT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.
HOWEVER...GUIDANCE IS AT ODDS AS TO WHEN A COLD POLAR VORTEX WILL
FINALLY LIFT OUT OF MANITOBA/ONTARIO...PRIOR TO THE AFOREMENTIONED
DEVELOPMENTS. IF THE SLOWER MREF VERIFIES CLOSEST...A SOUTHWARD
SURGING ARCTIC AIR MASS COULD MITIGATE ANY SEVERE THREAT.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0228 AM CST SUN FEB 10 2008

VALID 121200Z - 131200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS LATE TUE AFTN/TUE NIGHT ACROSS
THE FL PENINSULA....

..SYNOPSIS...
MODELS INDICATE THAT THE STRONG BELT OF WESTERLIES EMANATING FROM
THE NORTHERN PACIFIC WILL REMAIN AMPLIFIED ACROSS THE U.S. THROUGH
THIS FORECAST PERIOD. UPPER RIDGING OVER THE WEST WILL LIKELY BE
SUPPRESSED AS THE NEXT STRONG SHORT WAVE TROUGH DIGS INLAND OF THE
CANADIAN ROCKIES AND U.S. CASCADES. BUT...ANOTHER SHORT WAVE TROUGH
DIGGING TO THE LEE OF THE NORTHERN/CENTRAL U.S. ROCKIES...IN THE
WAKE OF ANOTHER IMPULSE LIFTING THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY...IS PROGGED
TO CONTRIBUTE TO A SHARPER/PROGRESSIVE AND INCREASINGLY NEUTRAL
TILTED BROADER SCALE TROUGH ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY TUESDAY.
MODELS INDICATE THAT THE SYSTEM WILL COME IN PHASE WITH A LOW
AMPLITUDE SUBTROPICAL WAVE/JET STREAK EMANATING FROM THE MEXICAN
PLATEAU. THIS FEATURE...COUPLED WITH AN INTENSIFYING UPPER JET IN
THE CREST OF A DOWNSTREAM RIDGE IS FORECAST TO CONTRIBUTE TO FORCING
SUPPORTIVE OF LOW-LEVEL CYCLOGENESIS TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY.
BUT...THIS NOW APPEARS MOST PROBABLE ALONG A FRONT OFF SOUTHERN
MID/ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS...WHICH SEEMS LIKELY TO LIMIT THE
MAGNITUDE/EXTENT OF THE SEVERE THREAT ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST.

..GULF COAST/SOUTH ATLANTIC COAST STATES...
MODELS INDICATE THAT THE COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEVELOPING
UPPER SYSTEM WILL PROGRESS THROUGH THE SOUTHERN PLAINS MOIST AXIS BY
EARLY TUESDAY...WITH LITTLE ADDITIONAL DEEP MOIST INFLOW FORECAST
OFF THE GULF OF MEXICO INTO THE CENTRAL/EASTERN GULF COAST REGION.
ONLY VERY WEAK DESTABILIZATION IS EXPECTED AHEAD OF THE FRONT AS IT
PROGRESSES ACROSS SOUTH/EASTERN TEXAS...AND EAST OF THE LOWER
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. BUT...THIS COULD STILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR AN
ISOLATED STRONG/SEVERE STORM OR TWO...BEFORE SHEAR PROFILES BEGIN TO
WEAKEN LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

THE FLORIDA PENINSULA SEEMS TO BE THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR SEVERE
POTENTIAL...MAINLY TUESDAY EVENING....AS AN INFLUX OF MOISTURE FROM
THE SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO/CARIBBEAN ACCOMPANIES A SUBTROPICAL
IMPULSE PRECEDING THE MORE AMPLIFIED WAVE. DESTABILIZATION
ASSOCIATED WITH BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTENING...COUPLED WITH
STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL AND DEEP LAYER SHEAR...IS EXPECTED TO
CONTRIBUTE TO A FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR SUPERCELLS...WITHIN
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATED WITH BROADER SCALE LIFT. ISOLATED
TORNADOES APPEAR POSSIBLE...IN ADDITION TO A RISK FOR HAIL AND
LOCALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.

VALID 111200Z - 121200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS LATE MON AFTN/MON EVE ACROSS
PARTS OF THE S CNTRL PLAINS....

..SYNOPSIS...
MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE AN AMPLIFICATION WITHIN THE STRONGER
BELT OF WESTERLIES ACROSS THE NORTHERN/EASTERN PACIFIC INTO THE
INTERMOUNTAIN WEST/ROCKIES LATER TODAY. AND...THIS IS PROGGED TO
TRANSLATE EASTWARD THROUGH MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF THE U.S. BY 12Z
TUESDAY. WITHIN THIS REGIME...A SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE TROUGH IS
PROGGED TO DIG TO THE LEE OF THE NORTHERN/CENTRAL ROCKIES
MONDAY...AS AN UPSTREAM RIDGE BUILDS ACROSS PACIFIC COASTAL AREAS.
AT THE SAME TIME...MODELS SUGGEST THAT FLOW WILL STRENGTHEN WITHIN A
BELT EXTENDING OUT OF THE SUBTROPICAL PACIFIC THROUGH THE MEXICAN
PLATEAU...TO THE REAR OF A BROAD IMPULSE PROGRESSING ACROSS LOWER
TEXAS/MEXICAN GULF COASTAL AREAS INTO THE WESTERN/CENTRAL GULF OF
MEXICO.

CONSIDERABLE SPREAD PERSISTS AMONG THE MODELS CONCERNING THE
EVOLUTION OF THE DIGGING SHORT WAVE TO THE LEE OF THE ROCKIES...AND
RELATED DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING THE INFLUENCE OF THE NEXT STRONG
IMPULSE ON THE WESTERN STATES RIDGE...AS IT APPROACHES THE BRITISH
COLUMBIA/PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST LATE IN THE PERIOD. UNCERTAINTIES
ALSO EXIST CONCERNING THE EXTENT OF THE ONGOING ARCTIC INTRUSION
INTO THE CENTRAL/EASTERN STATES...AND ITS SUBSEQUENT MODIFICATION IN
THE WAKE OF AN ASSOCIATED MID-LEVEL VORTEX...WHICH IS PROGGED TO
LIFT AWAY FROM NORTH ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS EARLY IN THE PERIOD.
BUT...THE BULK OF GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO INDICATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF
SUBSTANTIAL CONDITIONAL/CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY BY MONDAY ACROSS THE
SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS INTO PARTS OF THE OZARK PLATEAU...AS A MOIST
RETURN FLOW CONTINUES BENEATH AN ELEVATED MIXED LAYER EMANATING FROM
THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES/PLATEAU REGION.

..SOUTH CENTRAL STATES...
STEEPENING MOIST ISENTROPIC ASCENT...ASSOCIATED WITH A STRENGTHENING
LOW-LEVEL JET ON THE NOSE OF THE ELEVATED WARM LAYER ...IS EXPECTED
TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS
OF THE EAST CENTRAL PLAINS INTO THE OZARKS SHORTLY AFTER 12Z
MONDAY...IF NOT BEFORE. AND...THIS FORCING IS PROGGED TO GRADUALLY
SHIFT EASTWARD TOWARD THE LOWER OHIO VALLEY DURING THE DAY.

IN ITS WAKE...THE GFS AND ECMWF ARE SIMILAR IN INDICATING THAT
CONDITIONAL AND CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY WILL BECOME MAXIMIZED ACROSS
CENTRAL/EASTERN OKLAHOMA BY LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON...NEAR THE
INTERSECTION OF THE NOSE OF THE ELEVATED MIXED LAYER...THE LOW-LEVEL
MOIST TONGUE AND FRONTAL ZONE. IT SEEMS PROBABLE THAT A SHALLOWER
COLD FRONT WILL PRECEDE THE DEEPER COLD SURGE INTO THE RED RIVER
VALLEY. BUT...ELEVATED INSTABILITY IS STILL EXPECTED TO BECOME
SUFFICIENT FOR VIGOROUS CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT...INCLUDING A FEW
SEVERE STORMS. THIS SHOULD OCCUR AS INTERACTING BELTS OF WESTERLIES
CONTRIBUTE TO A STRENGTHENING DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW FIELD...FOCUSED
ACROSS THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS...BY EARLY MONDAY EVENING.

STRONG SHEAR THROUGH THE CLOUD BEARING LAYER WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF
UPDRAFT ROTATION. AND...A FEW SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LARGE
HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE...BEFORE ACTIVITY EXPANDS IN COVERAGE ABOVE
THE FRONTAL INVERSION...ALONG THE FRONTAL ZONE...AS THE FRONT BEGINS
TO ADVANCE SOUTHWARD THROUGH THE OZARK PLATEAU/RED RIVER VALLEY
MONDAY EVENING.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1148 PM CST SAT FEB 09 2008

VALID 101200Z - 111200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
A GENERAL WNW FLOW REGIME IS EXPECTED TO PREVAIL ACROSS THE LOWER 48
STATES THIS FORECAST PERIOD. A CLOSED MID LEVEL LOW...INITIALLY
CENTERED OVER THE GREAT LAKES WILL PROGRESS EWD AND SHOULD REACH ERN
MAINE AND THE NOVA SCOTIA REGION BY 12Z MONDAY. MEANWHILE...A
PACIFIC TROUGH...CURRENTLY APPROACHING THE BC/WA COAST PER WATER
VAPOR IMAGERY...IS EXPECTED TO AMPLIFY SEWD TOWARD THE NRN/CENTRAL
ROCKIES BY LATE IN THE FORECAST PERIOD.

..PART OF NJ/SERN NY TO SRN NEW ENGLAND EARLY TODAY...
FAST MOVING ARCTIC COLD FRONT...ACCOMPANYING A NEGATIVELY-TILTED
LEAD SHORT WAVE TROUGH AHEAD OF GREAT LAKES CLOSED LOW...IS FORECAST
TO EXTEND FROM CENTRAL NY SWD THROUGH CENTRAL PA TO WRN VA/NC AT 12Z
TODAY. THIS FRONT WILL MOVE QUICKLY EWD AND SHOULD BE EAST OF MUCH
OF NEW ENGLAND...EXCEPT MAINE...BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON. STRONG
ASCENT WITHIN EXIT REGION OF 140+ KT MID LEVEL JET AND STEEPENING
LAPSE RATES SHOULD PROVE FAVORABLE FOR CONVECTIVE SHOWERS
ACCOMPANYING THE FRONTAL PASSAGE. GIVEN VERY COLD MID LEVEL
TEMPERATURES WITH THIS SYSTEM...SOME OF THE SHOWERS MAY BECOME DEEP
ENOUGH TO SUPPORT LIGHTNING PRODUCTION. FAST MOVEMENT OF SYSTEM/
FRONT SUGGESTS THAT OVERALL TSTM POTENTIAL SHOULD REMAIN LESS THAN
10 PERCENT...AND PRECLUDES INTRODUCTION OF A GENERAL TSTM AREA FOR
THIS REGION.

..PART OF CENTRAL AND NRN OK/SERN KS/FAR SWRN MO LATE TONIGHT...
ARCTIC COLD FRONT FORECAST TO EXTEND FROM CENTRAL AR/OK WNWWD INTO
THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS AT 12Z WILL CONTINUE TO SETTLE SWD INTO NRN
TX TODAY. A PORTION OF THIS BOUNDARY SHOULD RETREAT NWD TONIGHT
ACROSS OK AS A SWLY LLJ STRENGTHENS FROM NW TX INTO SERN KS IN
RESPONSE TO HEIGHT FALLS ACCOMPANYING A WEAK LEAD IMPULSE AHEAD OF
AMPLIFYING NRN/CENTRAL ROCKIES TROUGH. LOW LEVEL MOISTURE/WARM AIR
ADVECTION ATOP COLD STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL BE GREATEST ALONG
AXIS OF LLJ INTO SERN KS LATE TONIGHT AIDING IN ELEVATED
DESTABILIZATION. MUCAPE AROUND 200 J/KG SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR
TSTMS...MAINLY AFTER 11/09Z...FROM PARTS OF CENTRAL/NRN OK INTO SERN
KS/FAR SWRN MO. MOST OF THIS ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS
A REGION WITH SUB-FREEZING SURFACE TEMPERATURES...SO THUNDER SLEET
AND FREEZING RAIN SHOULD BE COMMON WITH THESE STORMS.

..LEE OF LAKE ONTARIO THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...
VERY COLD AIR MASS /AOB -20 C AT 850 MB/ EXPECTED TO SPREAD ACROSS
THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION THIS MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON WILL
STEEPEN SFC-3 KM LAPSE RATES TO AT LEAST 8 C/KM. THIS MAY SUPPORT
DEEP ENOUGH CONVECTION FOR LIGHTNING PRODUCTION ALONG AND IN LEE OF
LAKE ONTARIO THROUGH THE AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING PRIOR TO
LOWERING INVERSION HEIGHTS AS CLOSED LOW MOVES EAST OF REGION.
HOWEVER...OVERALL LIGHTNING POTENTIAL SHOULD REMAIN LESS THAN 10
PERCENT PRECLUDING INCLUSION OF GENERAL TSTM AREA.
