DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0640 PM CST TUE JAN 04 2011

VALID 050100Z - 051200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A GENERALLY COOL AND DRY PATTERN WILL PERSIST ACROSS MOST OF THE
CONUS UNDER A ZONAL TO WNWLY FLOW REGIME. THE EXCEPTION WILL BE
ALONG THE WRN/CNTRL GULF COAST WHERE A MORE SUBSTANTIAL MOISTURE
RETURN HAS OCCURRED. AN UPPER SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL CONTINUE ESEWD
ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS AND INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY BY WED MORNING.
AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE...A 25-35KT SWLY LOW LEVEL JET WILL MAINTAIN
AN ELEVATED FEED OF MOISTURE AND MARGINAL INSTABILITY FOR SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT FROM SERN TX INTO SRN MS.

...SERN TX INTO LA/SRN MS...
ADVECTION OF UPPER 60S BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS INTO DEEP S TEXAS
HAS RESULTED IN MODERATE INSTABILITY LEVELS THIS EVENING. THE 00Z
CRP AND BRO SOUNDINGS BOTH SHOW SUBSTANTIAL INSTABILITY WITH
1500-2000 J/KG MLCAPE BENEATH RELATIVELY STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATE
PROFILES. CURRENTLY...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS PERSIST TO THE W AND N
OF HOUSTON AND N OF A WARM FRONT. A FEW STRONGER CORES WILL BE
CAPABLE OF NON-SEVERE HAIL.

AS THE UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE CONTINUES ESEWD INTO THE SRN
PLAINS...THE MAIN ZONE OF ISENTROPIC LIFT N OF THE SURFACE BOUNDARY
WILL SHIFT EWD INTO LA AND THEN INTO SRN MS BY WED MORNING. WHILE
OVERALL FORCING WITH THE TROUGH WILL INCREASE...STORMS WILL BE
MOVING FARTHER AWAY FROM THE INSTABILITY SOURCE. THUS...IT APPEARS
CURRENTLY OBSERVED STORM INTENSITIES WILL BE NEAR THE MAXIMUM
THROUGH THE PERIOD...PEAKING BETWEEN NOW AND 06Z OVER SERN TX/WRN
LA...WITH GENERALLY WEAKER CONVECTION MS OVERNIGHT.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

PREVIOUS CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION COVERS THE FORECAST PERIOD WELL AND
NO CHANGES ARE MADE.

...SYNOPSIS...
SPLIT FLOW PATTERN WILL CONTINUE THIS PERIOD...DOWNSTREAM FROM
QSTNRY LOW OFF THE SRN CA CST. DISTURBANCE NOW NEARING THE FOUR
CORNERS EXPECTED TO MOVE E TO THE OK/TX PANHANDLES TONIGHT... BEFORE
WEAKENING IN CONFLUENT FLOW OVER THE OZARKS EARLY WED. DRY/AND OR
POLAR AIR WILL ONCE AGAIN PREVAIL AT LWR LVLS OVER NEARLY THE ENTIRE
CONUS. AN EXCEPTION WILL BE THE LWR TX CSTL PLN AND...WITH
TIME...THE UPR TX CSTL PLN AND FAR SRN LA AS NWRN GULF CSTL FRONT
FURTHER DEVELOPS AND EDGES SLIGHTLY N IN RESPONSE TO APPROACHING
FOUR CORNERS IMPULSE. DEEP CONVECTION/SCTD TSTMS WILL BE CONFINED
TO THIS BOUNDARY DURING THE PERIOD.

...SE TX/LA...
WEAK FRONT NOW EXTENDING FROM S TX ENE INTO THE NWRN GULF WILL
SOMEWHAT STRENGTHEN TODAY/TONIGHT...AND SHOULD DEVELOP EWD ACROSS
EXTREME SRN LA BY 12Z WED...AS A WEAK WAVE BRIEFLY EVOLVES ALONG THE
BOUNDARY IN RESPONSE TO APPROACHING UPR IMPULSE.

ESELY SFC FLOW INVOF FRONT WILL BRING LWR 60S F DEWPOINTS INTO SE TX
THIS EVE AND INTO SRN LA EARLY WED. BUT LOW AMPLITUDE WSW FLOW AT
700 MB WILL MAINTAIN STOUT EML CAP ACROSS REGION...AND LOW CLOUDS
WILL LIMIT SFC HEATING. THUS...LIKELIHOOD FOR DIURNAL STORMS
APPEARS MINIMAL.

HOWEVER...THE CHANCE FOR ELEVATED TSTMS WILL INCREASE THIS EVE
THROUGH EARLY WED AS WAA/LARGE SCALE ASCENT INCREASE WITH THE
APPROACH OF AFOREMENTIONED UPR DISTURBANCE. IT APPEARS THAT THE
STRONGEST STORMS...AND ANY POTENTIAL FOR SFC-BASED ACTIVITY...
SHOULD REMAIN OVER THE NWRN GULF. ONE OR TWO STRONGER CELLS COULD
...HOWEVER...GLANCE FAR SRN LA LATE IN THE PERIOD. ATTM NEITHER

...DISCUSSION...

ERN PACIFIC UPPER LOW OFF THE CA/NRN BAJA COAST IS EXPECTED TO BE
FORCED EWD INTO THE SRN PLAINS THIS WEEKEND. THIS FEATURE WILL
EJECT AT A FAIRLY LOW LATITUDE WITH A MID LEVEL SPEED MAX POSSIBLY
TRANSLATING ENEWD ACROSS NRN MEXICO INTO FAR SOUTH TX AND THE NWRN
GOM. IT/S NOT ENTIRELY CLEAR HOW MUCH MOISTURE/INSTABILITY WILL
OVERSPREAD TX AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE. OTHERWISE DEEP LAYER SHEAR AND
FORCING WOULD SUGGEST AT LEAST A LOW POTENTIAL FOR A FEW ROBUST
THUNDERSTORMS. GIVEN THE THERMODYNAMIC UNCERTAINTIES WILL NOT
INTRODUCE SEVERE PROBS AT THIS TIME.

WEAK FRONTAL CONVECTION WILL LIKELY BE NOTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE

MEAGER INSTABILITY IT APPEARS ANY POSSIBLE SEVERE THREAT WILL BE
LIMITED TO UPDRAFTS WELL OFFSHORE WHERE BUOYANCY WILL BE MORE
NOTABLE OVER WARMER WATERS. OTHERWISE...NWLY FLOW WILL QUICKLY
DEVELOP IN THE WAKE OF THIS FRONT AND WHAT LITTLE INSTABILITY HAD
MANAGED TO DEVELOP OVER FL WILL QUICKLY BE FORCED SOUTH OF THE

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...GULF COAST...

LATEST SHORT RANGE MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN GENERAL AGREEMENT REGARDING
THE INLAND SURGE OF MODIFIED MARITIME GULF AIRMASS DURING THE
UPCOMING DAY2 PERIOD. BOTH THE NAM AND GFS ALLOW LOWER 60S SFC DEW
POINTS TO SPREAD INTO THE TX COASTAL PLAINS AND ACROSS EXTREME SRN
LA...THOUGH DEEPENING WLY FLOW WILL LIMIT A MORE NWD EXPANSION AS
SFC BOUNDARY ESTABLISHES ITSELF NEAR THE IMMEDIATE TX/LA COAST.
DESPITE THE STRENGTHENING WLY FLOW...LOW LEVEL WARM ADVECTION SHOULD
AID CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL ALONG AND JUST NORTH OF THE WIND SHIFT.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST AMPLE ELEVATED INSTABILITY FOR UPRIGHT
CONVECTION DUE PRIMARILY TO MODEST MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES THAT WILL
ADVECT ACROSS SOUTH TX INTO THIS FRONTAL ZONE. ALTHOUGH AN
EXPANSIVE W-E ZONE OF THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE NOTED NEAR
THE COAST...BOUNDARY LAYER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN TOO
COOL/STABLE TO WARRANT ANY MEANINGFUL THREAT FOR ORGANIZED SEVERE
THIS PERIOD. FOR THIS REASON WILL NOT INTRODUCE SEVERE PROBS.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1106 PM CST MON JAN 03 2011

VALID 041200Z - 051200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A GENERALLY DRY WEATHER PATTERN WILL PERSIST FOR THE LOWER 48 TODAY
WITH CONFLUENT UPPER FLOW FROM THE PLAINS INTO THE MIDWEST. A WEAK
UPPER LOW NOW OVER THE LOWER CO RIVER VALLEY WILL PROCEED EWD AND
WILL PHASE WITH A SEWD MOVING TROUGH AXIS ACROSS THE CNTRL PLAINS
AFTER 00Z. AS THIS OCCURS...A WEAK SURFACE TROUGH SHOULD FORM OVER
SERN TX/LA OVERNIGHT AND INTO WED MORNING WITH ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED.

...SERN TX/LA...
A WEAK SURFACE BOUNDARY WILL STRETCH FROM THE NRN GULF OF MEXICO
INTO DEEP S TX DURING THE DAY. ESELY SURFACE FLOW WILL HELP BRING
LOWER 60S F BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS INTO S TX. IN ADDITION TO LACK
OF HEATING DUE TO STRATUS...FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW A CAPPING
INVERSION AROUND 800 MB WHICH WILL HAMPER DAYTIME DEVELOPMENT. THE
BEST CHANCE OF ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS WILL OCCUR AS THE
AFOREMENTIONED UPPER TROUGH NEARS...MAINLY AFTER 00Z...FROM SE TX
INTO LA. AT THAT TIME...ISENTROPIC LIFT/WARM ADVECTION WILL DEEPEN
THE MOIST LAYER WITH PARCELS REACHING THE LFC. LITTLE IF ANY SEVERE
POTENTIAL WILL EXIST DUE TO WEAK INSTABILITY AND A COOL/STABLE
BOUNDARY LAYER.
