MESO: Mesoscale Discussion 1174
ACUS11 KWNS 222034
SWOMCD
SPC MCD 222034
NEZ000-222130-
MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1174
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0334 PM CDT SAT JUN 22 2013
AREAS AFFECTED...CENTRAL NEB...
CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE
VALID 222034Z - 222130Z
PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...60 PERCENT
SUMMARY...TSTM DEVELOPMENT IS POSSIBLE OVER PORTIONS OF CENTRAL NEB
DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS. IF TSTMS DO DEVELOP...CONDITIONS WOULD BE
FAVORABLE FOR SUPERCELLS AND A WW WOULD BE NEEDED.
DISCUSSION...AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY FROM OVERNIGHT CONVECTION HAS
BECOME THE EFFECTIVE FRONTAL BOUNDARY OVER NEB AND AT 20Z EXTENDED
FROM NR IMPERIAL TO COLUMBUS. THE FRONT HAS LIFTED NWD ALLOWING A
VERY MOIST LOW-LEVEL SLY FLOW TO DEVELOP WITH MID-UPPER 60S DEW
POINTS NEAR THE BOUNDARY. STRONG DIABATIC HEATING HAS COMBINED WITH
THE INCREASING MOISTURE TO RESULT IN MLCAPE VALUES BETWEEN 2000 AND
LOCALLY 3000 J/KG IN THE VICINITY OF THE FRONT. THE DISCUSSION AREA
IS ALONG THE SRN FRINGE OF STRONGER MID-TROPOSPHERIC SWLY FLOW
AVERAGING 35 KTS...AND AS A RESULT EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR OF 35 TO 40
KTS EXISTS ACROSS THE AREA.
LATEST VIS SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS AN INCREASING CU FIELD ALONG AND
SOUTH OF THE FRONT WHICH CORRESPONDS WITH OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SHOWING
DIMINISHING MLCINH IN THIS AREA. THERE IS SOME UNCERTAINTY ON THE
EXACT TIMING OF CONVECTIVE INITIATION...WITH TSTM DEVELOPMENT
BECOMING MORE PROBABLE TOWARDS EVENING. ONCE STORMS DEVELOP THE
ENVIRONMENT FAVORS SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF VERY LARGE HAIL...DAMAGING
WINDS AND POSSIBLY A TORNADO...ESPECIALLY IN THE VICINITY OF THE
FRONTAL BOUNDARY.
THIS AREA WILL BE MONITORED FOR SIGNS OF TSTM DEVELOPMENT. ALTHOUGH
A WATCH IS POSSIBLE IN THE SHORT TERM...THE LIKELIHOOD INCREASES
TOWARDS LATE AFTN/EARLY EVENING.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook
ACUS01 KWNS 222002
SWODY1
SPC AC 221959
DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0259 PM CDT SAT JUN 22 2013
VALID 222000Z - 231200Z
...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE NORTH
CENTRAL ROCKIES...MUCH OF THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS...INTO
PARTS OF THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...
...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN HIGH
PLAINS...
...SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS...
PRIMARY OUTLOOK ADJUSTMENT IS THE ADDITION OF A CATEGORICAL SLIGHT
RISK FOR HAIL/WIND POTENTIAL ACROSS PARTS OF WEST/NORTHWEST
TX...WITH MORE ISOLATED STORMS ALSO ANTICIPATED ACROSS FAR SOUTHWEST
TX. AIDED BY A WEAK MID-LEVEL IMPULSE APPROACHING FROM NM/SOUTHERN
CO...AT LEAST ISOLATED INSTANCES OF HAIL/WIND ARE EXPECTED
ESPECIALLY LATE THIS AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING.
...ELSEWHERE...
SEE PRIOR OUTLOOK DISCUSSION BELOW AND EXISTING/SUBSEQUENT MESOSCALE
DISCUSSIONS FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS.
..GUYER.. 06/22/2013
.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1126 AM CDT SAT JUN 22 2013/
...SYNOPSIS...
TO THE SOUTH OF A REMNANT BLOCKING PATTERN OVER WESTERN AND CENTRAL
CANADA...A MODEST BELT OF WESTERLIES CONTINUES TO CURVE ACROSS THE
PACIFIC COAST THROUGH THE ROCKIES. A NUMBER OF SHORT WAVE TROUGHS
ARE EMBEDDED WITHIN THE REGIME...INCLUDING ONE SIGNIFICANT IMPULSE
NOW TURNING EASTWARD INTO THE NORTHERN/CENTRAL ROCKIES. THIS LATTER
FEATURE IS EXPECTED TO PROGRESS NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE ROCKIES
INTO THE NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS BY EARLY SUNDAY...PRECEDED BY AT LEAST
A COUPLE OF SMALLER SCALE IMPULSES WITHIN INCREASINGLY CYCLONIC
SOUTHWESTERLY MID/UPPER FLOW ACROSS THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS.
MEANWHILE...A COUPLE OF PERTURBATIONS...NOW PROGRESSING INTO
BROADER SCALE ANTICYCLONIC FLOW ACROSS THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
INTO THE GREAT LAKES...WILL CONTINUE EASTWARD TODAY...AND THE
TENDENCY MAY BE FOR MID-LEVEL HEIGHTS TO RISE ACROSS THE UPPER
MIDWEST...BEFORE FALLING MORE SUBSTANTIVELY AGAIN LATE TONIGHT INTO
SUNDAY.
THIS EVOLVING PATTERN IS AGAIN EXPECTED TO SUPPORT CONSIDERABLE
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY TODAY AND TONIGHT ACROSS THE NORTHERN ROCKIES
INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST...WITH INCREASING CHANCES FOR THUNDERSTORM
ACTIVITY ALSO EASTWARD ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION INTO PARTS OF
THE NORTHEAST. STRONG HEATING MAY ALSO AGAIN CONTRIBUTE TO
SCATTERED STORM DEVELOPMENT LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING ACROSS
PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS
OTHERWISE...WITH MID-LEVEL INHIBITION REMAINING RELATIVELY WEAK EAST
OF THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY IS ALSO
EXPECTED AROUND THE PERIPHERY OF A LINGERING WEAK UPPER LOW CENTERED
NEAR THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS...ACROSS PARTS OF THE LOWER OHIO
VALLEY INTO THE OZARK PLATEAU...AND ACROSS THE GULF AND SOUTH
ATLANTIC COASTS.
...NRN/CNTRL ROCKIES EASTWARD TO UPPER MIDWEST...
THE DETAILS OF POTENTIAL CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT FOR TODAY REMAIN A
BIT UNCLEAR. THE PRIMARY SURFACE BOUNDARY OF INTEREST APPEARS TO BE
A COMPOSITE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY GENERATED BY STORM CLUSTERS OF THE PAST
COUPLE OF DAYS...WHICH NOW GENERALLY EXTENDS ACROSS LOWER
MICHIGAN...NORTHERN INDIANA AND ILLINOIS...THROUGH SOUTHERN
IOWA...AND THE VICINITY OF THE KANSAS/NEBRASKA BORDER...INTO THE
COLORADO FRONT RANGE. MODIFICATION AND NORTHWARD RETREAT OF THIS
BOUNDARY IS UNCERTAIN...BUT STEEPEST MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES...EAST OF
THE HIGH PLAINS...HAVE GENERALLY BECOME FOCUSED IN A CORRIDOR ALONG
AND TO ITS NORTH. MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES REMAIN MODESTLY STEEP
NORTHWARD THROUGH MUCH OF THE DAKOTAS...BUT CONSIDERABLE OVERTURNING
HAS STABILIZED A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
AND UPPER GREAT LAKES REGION. WHERE MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES REMAIN
STEEP...THE BOUNDARY LAYER ALSO REMAINS MOIST TO THE NORTH OF THE
FRONT...BENEATH MODEST SOUTHWESTERLY MID-LEVEL FLOW...WHICH WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO SUFFICIENT SHEAR FOR ORGANIZED STORM DEVELOPMENT
ACROSS A BROAD AREA OF THE NORTH CENTRAL U.S. BY LATE AFTERNOON.
IN ADDITION TO THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY...THE LOW-LEVEL UPSLOPE FLOW
REGIME ACROSS THE NORTH CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE
ANOTHER FOCUS FOR RELATIVELY HIGHER SEVERE STORM PROBABILITIES.
AIDED BY FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPPER IMPULSE...DISCRETE STORM
DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON ACROSS
PARTS OF CENTRAL INTO EASTERN WYOMING/NORTHEAST COLORADO AND
ADJACENT WESTERN NEBRASKA AND THE WESTERN DAKOTAS. STRONGEST STORMS
WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING VERY LARGE HAIL...PERHAPS A COUPLE OF
TORNADOES...BEFORE ACTIVITY GROWS UPSCALE WITH A MORE PROMINENT RISK
FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AS IT SPREADS EASTWARD INTO THE PLAINS THIS
EVENING.
...SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES REGION/OHIO VALLEY...
MODERATE BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZATION DOES APPEAR PROBABLE WITH
DAYTIME HEATING...ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ACROSS THE
SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES REGION INTO THE OHIO VALLEY. THIS MAY BE
ENOUGH TO SUPPORT SMALL CLUSTERS OF STORMS WITH AT LEAST LOW
PROBABILITIES FOR SEVERE WIND/HAIL. HOWEVER...DUE TO THE WEAK
NATURE OF THE FLOW FIELDS...SEVERE POTENTIAL STILL APPEARS TOO LOW
FOR A SLIGHT RISK AT THE PRESENT TIME.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1173
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0245 PM CDT SAT JUN 22 2013
AREAS AFFECTED...WRN NEB THROUGH WRN SD AND SWRN ND
CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY
VALID 221945Z - 222115Z
PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...80 PERCENT
SUMMARY...STORMS EXPECTED TO MOVE/DEVELOP INTO THE HIGH PLAINS OF
WRN NEB THROUGH THE WRN DAKOTAS AFTER 21Z. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING
WIND WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS...BUT A COUPLE TORNADOES WILL ALSO BE
POSSIBLE.
DISCUSSION...DIABATIC WARMING OVER THE HIGH PLAINS OF WRN NEB INTO
WRN SD IS DESTABILIZING THE BOUNDARY LAYER WITHIN A MOIST LOW-LEVEL
ELY UPSLOPE REGIME. LATEST OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS INDICATES 1500-2000
J/KG MLCAPE ALREADY IN PLACE. NUMEROUS STORMS HAVE DEVELOPED OVER
THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF WY WITHIN A ZONE OF FAVORABLE LARGE SCALE
ASCENT DOWNSTREAM FROM A PROGRESSIVE UPPER TROUGH. THIS ACTIVITY
WILL LIKELY CONTINUE DEVELOPING EWD INTO THE HIGH PLAINS SUPPORTED
BY AN INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER. SOME INCREASE IN SWLY
MID-LEVEL WINDS IS EXPECTED AS THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH ADVANCES FARTHER
EAST WITH EFFECTIVE SHEAR FROM 40-50 KT FAVORING ORGANIZED STORMS.
FEW SUPERCELLS APPEAR LIKELY...BUT THERE MAY BE A TENDENCY FOR SOME
OF THE STORMS TO GROW UPSCALE INTO CLUSTERS. IF STORMS CAN REMAIN
DISCRETE THE POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES WOULD BE
GREATER...OTHERWISE DAMAGING WIND AND LARGE HAIL SHOULD BE THE
PRIMARY THREATS.

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 343 CONTINUES.
SUMMARY...THE THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL...DAMAGING WIND AND ISOLATED

HOURS EXPECTED FROM CNTRL THROUGH ERN WY.
DISCUSSION...NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE DEVELOPING OVER THE

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1171
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0111 PM CDT SAT JUN 22 2013
AREAS AFFECTED...NERN CO
CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE
VALID 221811Z - 222015Z
PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT
SUMMARY...WIDELY SCATTERED STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER THE
MOUNTAINS OF NCTRL CO AND SUBSEQUENTLY MOVE INTO THE HIGH PLAINS OF
NERN CO THIS AFTERNOON. ISOLATED LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND WILL
BE THE MAIN THREATS. TRENDS WILL BE MONITORED FOR A POSSIBLE WW
ISSUANCE BY 20Z.
DISCUSSION...EARLY THIS AFTERNOON SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS CUMULUS
DEVELOPMENT OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NCNTRL CO. THE CIRCULATION
AROUND A SFC LOW OVER NWRN KS IS RESULTING IN ENELY LOW-LEVEL WINDS
WHICH WILL MAINTAIN INFLUX OF LOW-MID 50S DEWPOINTS OVER THE HIGH
PLAINS OF NERN CO AND A MODEST UPSLOPE COMPONENT. STRONG DIABATIC
WARMING IS DESTABILIZING THE SFC LAYER...AND LATEST OBJECTIVE
ANALYSIS SHOWS MLCAPE FROM 1000-1500 J/KG. BASED ON MODIFIED 12Z
RAOBS AND POINT FORECAST SOUNDINGS...TEMPERATURES IN THE MID-UPPER
80 F ARE NEEDED TO SUSTAIN ROBUST THUNDERSTORMS EAST OF THE HIGHER
TERRAIN. THIS SUGGESTS ANOTHER 1.5 - 2 HOURS OF INSOLATION IS NEEDED
OVER THE NERN CO HIGH PLAINS BEFORE STORMS BEGIN TO POSE A SEVERE
THREAT. THE 30-35 KT SWLY FLOW AT 500 MB ABOVE LIGHT ELY NEAR SFC
WINDS IS CONTRIBUTING TO 40-45 KT EFFECTIVE SHEAR THAT WILL FAVOR A
FEW SUPERCELLS ONCE STORMS DEVELOP AND ROOT INTO THE BOUNDARY LAYER.
