WATCHES: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 891

WWUS20 KWNS 080250
SEL1
SPC WW 080250
COZ000-KSZ000-NEZ000-081000-

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 891
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
850 PM MDT SUN SEP 7 2008

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

NORTHEAST COLORADO
NORTHWEST KANSAS
SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA

EFFECTIVE THIS SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY MORNING FROM 850 PM UNTIL
400 AM MDT.

HAIL TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 60
STATUTE MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 65 MILES WEST OF
AKRON COLORADO TO 40 MILES EAST OF HILL CITY KANSAS. FOR A
COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE
UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU1).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...TSTMS EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND STRENGTH
THROUGH EARLY MONDAY IN ZONE OF INCREASING WAA/DPVA DOWNSTREAM FROM
AMPLIFYING NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH. STEEP MID LVL LAPSE
RATES...COOL MEAN TEMP PROFILES...INCREASING PWS WITH EWD
EXTENT...AND MODERATE WNWLY CLOUD LAYER FLOW SUGGEST GOOD RISK FOR
SVR HAIL AND POSSIBLY LCLY DMGG WIND WITH THE SLIGHTLY ELEVATED
STORMS.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 1.5 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 450. MEAN STORM
MOTION VECTOR 29030.

AREAS AFFECTED...NE CO...S NEB...N KS

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 080212Z - 080445Z

HVL PROFILER HAS SHOWN A STEADY INCREASE IN THE 1-2KM SSW FLOW
REGIME EARLY THIS EVE S OF AN H85-H7 BAROCLINIC ZONE STRADDLING THE
NEB/KS BORDER. SSW LLJ WILL BE MAINTAINED AS MID/UPR JET CORE
INTENSIFIES OVER THE MO VLY/CORN BELT TONIGHT DOWNSTREAM FROM AN
APCHG TROUGH. THIS WILL MAXIMIZE LOW/MID-LVL THETA-E ADVECTION IN A
BROAD ZONE SHIFTING FROM NE CO INTO S NEB AND N KS WITH TIME
TONIGHT.

THOUGH THE MOISTURE PROFILES WERE NOT OUTSTANDING PER REGIONAL 00Z
RAOBS...DNR/DDC LAPSE RATE PROFILE WAS QUITE STEEP AND GIVEN GRADUAL
MOISTENING OF THE PROFILE VIA ASCENT/COOLING...BANDS OF STRONG TSTMS
WILL BE LIKELY. ROUGHLY 40-45 KTS OF EFFECTIVE SHEAR WILL BE
FAVORABLE FOR ISOLD-WDLY SCTD ROTATING UPDRAFTS GIVING LARGE HAIL.

ACTIVITY DVLPG OVER NE CO IS PROBABLY BEING AIDED BY ELY LOW-LVL
UPSLOPE FLOW AND COULD BE THE START OF THE WELL-ADVERTISED NOCTURNAL
EVENT. EXPECT ADDITIONAL STORMS WILL DEVELOP FARTHER E WITH TIME
THIS EVE. AS SUCH...A SEVERE TSTM WATCH MAY NEED TO BE CONSIDERED
FOR PARTS OF THE REGION.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 080100Z - 081200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS TONIGHT OVER PARTS OF THE CNTRL
PLAINS...

...CNTRL PLAINS...

LATEST MESOANALYSIS INDICATED DEEPENING LEE CYCLONE OVER SERN CO
WITH ATTENDANT QUASI-STATIONARY BOUNDARY EXTENDING SEWD ACROSS NRN
OK INTO NWRN AR. FARTHER N...A SECONDARY FRONTAL BOUNDARY WAS
TEMPORARILY STATIONARY FROM NERN CO EWD ACROSS NRN KS. THIS
SECONDARY BOUNDARY WILL BEGIN TO SLOWLY PUSH SWD TONIGHT WITH THE
APPROACH OF UPSTREAM SHORT WAVE TROUGH DIGGING SEWD THROUGH MY/WY.

PROFILER DATA OVER SWRN KS INDICATE CONSIDERABLE STRENGTHENING OF
WINDS IN THE 1-2 KM AGL LAYER SINCE AROUND 20Z AND THIS TREND WILL
CONTINUE TONIGHT AS THE NOCTURNAL LLJ IS ENHANCED BY A DYNAMIC
LOW-LEVEL MASS RESPONSE TO APPROACHING SHORT WAVE TROUGH. THIS
SHOULD SUPPORT THE TRANSPORT OF AN INCREASINGLY MOIST LOW-LEVEL AIR
MASS NWD INTO THE SLIGHT RISK AREA. THIS PROCESS WILL OCCUR BENEATH
A PLUME OF STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES /REF. 00Z DNR
SOUNDING/...CONTRIBUTING TO A MODERATELY UNSTABLE ELEVATED
ENVIRONMENT WITH MUCAPES APPROACHING 1000-1500 J/KG.

SHORT TERM MODEL GUIDANCE REMAINS CONSISTENT IN SUGGESTING AN
INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF ELEVATED TSTMS BY 03Z ALONG NOSE OF
STRENGTHENING LLJ FROM PARTS OF ERN CO EWD TO ONGOING ELEVATED
STORMS OVER NERN KS/NWRN MO. THE MOST INTENSE STORMS WILL BE
CAPABLE OF SEVERE HAIL AND PERHAPS LOCALLY STRONG WIND GUSTS GIVEN
THE MODERATE INSTABILITY AND 40-45 KT OF EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR.

...SRN HIGH PLAINS...

SCATTERED TSTMS ARE IN PROGRESS THIS EVENING OVER CNTRL/ERN NM
APPARENTLY IN ASSOCIATION WITH A VORTICITY MAXIMUM LIFTING NEWD
ACROSS THE REGION. 00Z ELP SOUNDING IS LIKELY QUITE REPRESENTATIVE
OF THE AMBIENT ENVIRONMENT WITH STEEP LAPSE RATES THROUGH 500 MB AND
MODEST BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE CONTRIBUTING TO MLCAPES OF AROUND
1000 J/KG. MOREOVER...THESE DATA ALSO SHOWED A NOTABLE INCREASE IN
ZONAL FLOW ABOVE 6 KM WITH SUFFICIENT VERTICAL SHEAR FOR STORM
ORGANIZATION. AS SUCH...EXPECT TSTMS TO PERSIST FOR THE NEXT FEW
HOURS /NAMELY OVER PARTS OF SRN AND ERN NM INTO WRN TX/ WITH A
CONTINUED THREAT OF SOME HAIL AND LOCALLY STRONG WIND GUSTS.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 072044Z - 072215Z

ISOLATED HAIL AND A FEW STRONGER WIND GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE INTO
THE EARLY EVENING ACROSS CENTRAL AND ERN NM. MARGINAL SHEAR AND
LIMITED COVERAGE OF THE SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO PRECLUDE THE
ISSUANCE OF A WATCH.

LATEST OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SHOWED STRONGEST SWLY MID LEVEL WINDS/DEEP
LAYER SHEAR EXTENDED FROM NRN MEXICO THROUGH FAR W TX AND SERN NM.
MEANWHILE...GREATEST INSTABILITY /MLCAPE 1000-1500 J/KG/ WAS
GENERALLY DISPLACED NORTH OF THE STRONGEST SHEAR...WITH SOME OVERLAP
ACROSS SERN NM. REGIONAL RADARS INDICATED TSTMS HAD ALREADY
DEVELOPED ACROSS THE SRN HALF OF NM INTO NORTH CENTRAL NM WHERE
MOIST UPSLOPE FLOW AND STEEP LAPSE RATES ARE SUPPORTING THIS
ACTIVITY. THE BEST LOCATION FOR MORE SUSTAINED TSTMS AND POTENTIAL
FOR ISOLATED HAIL SHOULD BE ACROSS MAINLY SERN NM WHERE SUFFICIENT
INSTABILITY AND SHEAR ARE JUXTAPOSED FOR SOME STORM ORGANIZATION.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF FAR ERN
CO...NRN KS AND SRN NEB...

...CNTRL PLAINS/CNTRL HIGH PLAINS...
A ZONAL FLOW PATTERN IS IN PLACE ACROSS THE CNTRL PLAINS WITH WATER
VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWING A PLUME OF MID-LEVEL MOISTURE EXTENDING FROM
CNTRL CO EWD ACROSS NRN KS. AT THE SFC...A 1010 MB LOW IS PRESENT
OVER NCNTRL CO WITH A BOUNDARY EXTENDING SEWD FROM THE LOW ACROSS NE
CO...WRN KS INTO NRN OK. THE AIRMASS ACROSS THE CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS
REMAINS CAPPED BUT ELEVATED INSTABILITY IS INCREASING ABOVE THE CAP
WITH THE RUC SUGGESTING MUCAPE VALUES ACROSS SW KS RANGE FROM 1000
TO 1500 J/KG. MODEL FORECASTS FAIL TO DEVELOP MUCH CONVECTION ACROSS
THE SRN AND CNTRL PLAINS LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EVENING DUE TO
THE CAP BUT DO AGREE INITIATING ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS ALONG THE NRN
EDGE OF THE INSTABILITY IN ERN CO LATE THIS EVENING. THIS CONVECTION
SHOULD INITIATE NEAR THE BOUNDARY AND MOVE EWD ACROSS NRN KS DURING
THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD AS THE LOW-LEVEL JET STRENGTHENS.

FORECAST SOUNDINGS ACROSS NRN KS OVERNIGHT SHOW STRONG VERTICAL
SHEAR AND SOMEWHAT STEEPENED MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES SUGGESTING A
THREAT FOR HAIL WILL EXIST WITH THE MORE ORGANIZED THUNDERSTORMS. IF
AN ELEVATED SUPERCELL CAN DEVELOP...THEN A CORRIDOR OF HAIL WOULD BE
POSSIBLE IN NRN KS LATE TONIGHT. ALTHOUGH LESS LIKELY...A MARGINAL
WIND DAMAGE THREAT MAY ALSO DEVELOP IF AN ORGANIZED MCS CAN DRIVE AN
INTENSE DOWNDRAFT THROUGH THE CAP.

...NM/FAR WEST TX...
THUNDERSTORMS ARE CURRENTLY DEVELOPING ACROSS CNTRL NM ASSOCIATED
WITH A SHORTWAVE TROUGH EVIDENT ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY. RUC ANALYSIS
SUGGESTS SEVERAL POCKETS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY ARE LOCATED FROM SW
NM EXTENDING NEWD INTO THE ERN PLAINS OF NM WHERE MLCAPE VALUES
RANGE FROM 1500 TO 2500 J/KG. IN ADDITION...SFC WINDS ARE BACKED
ACROSS MUCH OF NM WHICH IS CREATING SUBSTANTIAL DIRECTIONAL SHEAR IN
THE LOW TO MID-LEVELS AS SHOWN BY REGIONAL WSR-88D VWPS. THIS
COMBINED WITH INSTABILITY AND STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES EVIDENT ON
FORECAST SOUNDINGS MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR AN ISOLATED HAIL THREAT
WITH THE STRONGER MULTICELLS.

...UPPER GREAT LAKES...
WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS A BROAD LOW-AMPLITUDE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH
OVER THE UPPER MIDWEST. AT THE SFC...A COLD FRONT IS LOCATED ACROSS
NW WI SWWD INTO SE MN. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE DEVELOPING NEAR
AND AHEAD OF THE BOUNDARY WHERE THE RUC SUGGESTS INSTABILITY IS WEAK
ATTM. HOWEVER...MODERATE TO STRONG VERTICAL SHEAR EXISTS ACROSS MUCH
OF THE REGION ACCORDING TO THE RUC WHICH COMBINED WITH COLD AIR
ALOFT /500 MB TEMPS OF -20 TO -22C/ MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR A MARGINAL
HAIL THREAT THIS AFTERNOON.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1228 PM CDT SUN SEP 07 2008

VALID 081200Z - 091200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE CNTRL
PLAINS AND MID TO UPPER MS VALLEY...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF SRN AND CNTRL
FL...

...CNTRL PLAINS/MID TO UPPER MS VALLEY...
ZONAL FLOW FROM THE UPPER MS VALLEY EWD INTO THE GREAT LAKES TONIGHT
WILL BECOME WSWLY MONDAY AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH
IN THE PLAINS STATES. THIS FEATURE WILL GRADUALLY AMPLIFY AS A
LOW-LEVEL JET MOVES QUICKLY NEWD FROM THE CNTRL PLAINS INTO THE
LOWER OH VALLEY. MODEL FORECASTS ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH AN ELEVATED
STORM CLUSTER ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE LOW-LEVEL JET MOVING EWD
ACROSS THE CNTRL PLAINS INTO THE MID MO VALLEY MONDAY MORNING.
STRONG VERTICAL SHEAR AND RELATIVELY STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES
EVIDENT ON FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOULD SUPPORT A MARGINAL HAIL THREAT
WITH THIS THUNDERSTORM CLUSTER.

THE ELEVATED STORM CLUSTER OVER THE CNTRL PLAINS MAY CONTINUE EWD
ACROSS NRN MO AND SRN IA MONDAY AFTERNOON WITH SFC-BASED
THUNDERSTORMS INITIATING AS SFC TEMPS HEAT UP ON THE NRN EDGE OF AN
AXIS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY FROM ERN KS INTO NCNTRL MO. A
WELL-DEFINED 60 TO 75 KT MID-LEVEL JET OVER THE UPPER MIDWEST SHOULD
CREATE A STRONG GRADIENT IN VERTICAL SHEAR SWD ACROSS IA AND MO WITH
FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOWING ABOUT 50 KT OF 0-6 KM SHEAR OVER SRN IA
DROPPING TO ABOUT 30 KT OVER CNTRL MO. THIS AMOUNT OF VERTICAL SHEAR
SHOULD BE SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS AND BOWING LINE SEGMENTS LATE
MONDAY AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING.

MODEL FORECASTS SUGGEST THE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL BE QUITE FOCUSED
AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A SEVERE MCS APPEARS FAIRLY CERTAIN. LOW-LEVEL
SHEAR EVIDENT ON FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOULD BE ADEQUATE FOR A FEW
TORNADOES WITH SUPERCELLS AND THE MORE ORGANIZED BOW ECHOS. THE
MODELS ALSO SHOW A WARM FRONT FROM NRN MO EXTENDING EWD INTO WRN MO
WHERE STRONG LOW-LEVEL SHEAR...LOW LCL-HEIGHTS AND ABUNDANT MOISTURE
IS FORECAST. THIS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR AN ISOLATED TORNADO
THREAT ESPECIALLY WITH SUPERCELLS THAT TRACK EWD ALONG OR NEAR THE
BOUNDARY. THE SHEAR AND INSTABILITY ALSO SHOULD SUPPORT LARGE HAIL
WITH THE MORE DOMINANT SUPERCELLS. WIND DAMAGE APPEARS MOST LIKELY
WITH LINE SEGMENTS THAT DEVELOP IN THE MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR SOUTH
OF THE FRONT WHERE LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES SHOULD BE QUITE STEEP IN
THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. MODEL FORECASTS MOVE AN MCS
INTO THE NRN OH VALLEY DURING THE LATE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT PERIOD.
INSTABILITY AND VERTICAL SHEAR ON FORECAST SOUNDINGS MAY SUPPORT A
MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT WITH THIS CONVECTIVE CLUSTER.

...SRN AND CNTRL FLORIDA...
HURRICANE IKE IS FORECAST BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER TO MOVE
WWD ACROSS THE ISLAND OF CUBA MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT WITH THE NRN
RAINBANDS SPREADING ACROSS SRN AND CNTRL FLORIDA. LOW-LEVEL SHEAR
PROFILES ARE FORECAST TO GRADUALLY INCREASE ACROSS SRN FL DURING THE
AFTERNOON AND EVENING AS THE STRONGER WINDS APPROACH AND THE CENTER
OF IKE PASSES BY TO THE SOUTH. INITIALLY...A MARGINAL TORNADO THREAT
SHOULD EXIST WITH THE FIRST RAINBANDS THAT MOVE INLAND ACROSS FL
MONDAY MORNING. HOWEVER...THE TORNADO THREAT MAY BECOME GREATER
DURING THE AFTERNOON AS INSTABILITY STRENGTHENS...LCL HEIGHTS DROP
AND LOW-LEVEL SHEAR INCREASES. THE TORNADO THREAT MONDAY AFTERNOON
AND EVENING SHOULD PERSIST INTO THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

VALID 071630Z - 081200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS PARTS OF ERN CO...SRN NE AND
NRN KS...

...SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION...
BROAD UPPER TROUGH PERSISTS NRN CONUS FROM ROCKIES EWD TO GREAT
LAKES. WHILE ONE IMPULSE/MID LEVEL WIND MAX SHIFTS EWD ACROSS GREAT
LAKES TODAY ANOTHER FAIRLY STRONG S/WV CURRENTLY MOVING SEWD THRU MT
WILL IMPACT CENTRAL PLAINS TONIGHT.

...CENTRAL PLAINS...
IN RESPONSE TO THE APPROACHING MT SYSTEM...THE LOW LEVEL JET WILL
INCREASE RAPIDLY AFTER 00Z WITH SWLY 40-50KT OF 850MB FLOW
DEVELOPING AFTER 06Z. GFS/NAM IN BASIC AGREEMENT THAT ELEVATED
THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP INITIALLY VICINITY SWRN NE/KS...PRIMARILY
AFTER 06Z...IN THE STRONG WAA AND LARGE SCALE ASCENT SETUP BY THE
APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH COMBINED WITH THE LOW LEVEL JET. WITH MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES AROUND 7C/KM AND ELEVATED CAPE AOA 1000 J/KG
COMBINED WITH SHEAR OF 40-50KT IN THE CLOUD BEARING REGION...A FEW
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY WITH LARGE HAIL THE PRIMARY THREAT
AGAIN MAINLY AFTER 06Z. STORMS WILL SPREAD EWD IN THE STRONG WARM
ADVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH LLJ BY 12Z MON ACROSS SRN NE/NRN KS.

...GREAT LAKES...
S/WV TROUGH NOW MOVING EWD ACROSS UPR MS VALLEY WILL SPREAD COOL
TEMPERATURES ALOFT /-18 TO -20C AT 500MB/ AND RATHER STEEP LAPSE
RATES OVER MUCH OF THE UPPER GREAT LAKES THIS AFTERNOON ...WHERE
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED. CAPE VALUES UP TO 500 J/KG AND
STRONG MID/UPPER LEVEL FLOW WILL PROMOTE THE POTENTIAL OF HAIL IN
STRONGER CELLS. ORGANIZED SEVERE STORMS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED AT THIS
TIME.

..NM/WEST TX...
A LOW LATITUDE IMPULSE WILL LIFT NEWD/NWD FROM NWRN MEXICO THROUGH
NM INTO WRN TX TODAY INTO TONIGHT. FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THIS
FEATURE COUPLED WITH OROGRAPHIC ASCENT IS EXPECTED TO FOSTER
SCATTERED TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON INTO EVENING. WHILE VERTICAL SHEAR
WILL REMAIN RELATIVELY WEAK...POCKETS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY
/MLCAPES APPROACHING 1000 J PER KG/ MAY SUPPORT A FEW
ORGANIZED/LONG-LIVED STORMS CAPABLE OF MAINLY SOME HAIL.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 071227
SWODY1
SPC AC 071225

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0725 AM CDT SUN SEP 07 2008

VALID 071300Z - 081200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS TONIGHT OVER PARTS OF
CO/KS/NEB...

A BROAD UPPER TROUGH IS PRESENT THIS MORNING OVER MUCH OF THE
NORTHERN UNITED STATES...WITH WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWING MAIN JET
STREAM EXTENDING FROM WY ACROSS NEB/IA INTO THE GREAT LAKES STATES.
ONE OF THE STRONGER SHORTWAVE TROUGHS IS CURRENTLY OVER IA/MO AND IS
TRACKING NORTHEASTWARD INTO THE OH VALLEY. SHORTWAVE RIDGING IN THE
WAKE OF THIS SYSTEM WILL HELP TO MAINTAIN/STRENGTHEN THE MID LEVEL
CAPPING INVERSION OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS THROUGH MUCH OF TODAY.
HOWEVER...AN INCREASING NOCTURNAL SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL JET WILL
IMPINGE ON WEAK SURFACE BOUNDARY FORECAST TO RETREAT NORTHWARD INTO
KS THIS EVENING AND PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR SCATTERED/NUMEROUS
THUNDERSTORMS. MODELS VARY ON TIMING OF INITIATION...WITH SOME
GUIDANCE NOT SHOWING MANY STORMS UNTIL AFTER 06Z. HOWEVER...ONCE
STORMS DO INTENSIFY...IT APPEARS LIKELY THAT AT LEAST A FEW STORMS
WILL POSE A RISK OF LARGE HAIL AND PERHAPS GUSTY WINDS.

...GREAT LAKES...
WV LOOPS SHOW A RATHER STRONG SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER MT. THIS
FEATURE IS FORECAST TO AMPLIFY AS IT SWEEPS EASTWARD INTO THE
MIDWEST THIS AFTERNOON. COOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT /-18 TO -20C AT
500MB/ AND RATHER STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL HELP TO DESTABILIZE THE
AIRMASS OVER MUCH OF THE GREAT LAKES...WHERE ISOLATED AFTERNOON
THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED. CAPE VALUES UP TO 500 J/KG AND STRONG
MID/UPPER LEVEL FLOW WILL PROMOTE THE POTENTIAL OF HAIL IN STRONGER
CELLS. ORGANIZED SEVERE STORMS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED AT THIS TIME.

...NM/WEST TX...
MODEL GUIDANCE IS RATHER CONSISTENT IN SUGGESTING THAT A LOW
LATITUDE IMPULSE WILL LIFT NEWD/NWD FROM NWRN MEXICO THROUGH NM INTO
WRN TX TODAY INTO TONIGHT. FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FEATURE
COUPLED WITH OROGRAPHIC ASCENT IS EXPECTED TO FOSTER SCATTERED TSTMS
THIS AFTERNOON INTO EVENING. WHILE VERTICAL SHEAR WILL REMAIN
RELATIVELY WEAK...POCKETS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY /MLCAPES
APPROACHING 1000 J PER KG/ MAY SUPPORT A FEW ORGANIZED/LONG-LIVED
STORMS CAPABLE OF MAINLY SOME HAIL.
