0633 PM CDT TUE JUL 14 2009

AREAS AFFECTED...ERN NEB INTO WRN IA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 142333Z - 150130Z

SEVERE STORMS MAY DEVELOP SWD ALONG THE COLD FRONT AND/OR ACROSS A
WARM ADVECTION ZONE FROM SERN NEB INTO WRN IA...WITH LARGE
HAIL...DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND ISOLATED TORNADOES POSSIBLE.

A COLD FRONT CONTINUES TO TRAVEL SEWD WITH TCU ALONG IT. MORE
VIGOROUS CELLS ARE TRYING TO DEVELOP JUST S OF WW 583 ACROSS NERN
NEB. FARTHER S...AN EXTENSIVE CU FIELD EXISTS WHERE TEMPERATURES
HAVE WARMED INTO THE LOW 90S F...WHILE FARTHER E INTO IA AND NW MO
CU WERE MUCH MORE SUBDUED DUE TO COOLER BOUNDARY LAYER TEMPERATURES
AND CAPPING.

PLENTY OF INSTABILITY EXISTS FOR SEVERE STORMS WITH A MODIFIED 20Z
OAX SOUNDING SHOWING MUCAPE TO ABOUT 4000 J/KG.
HOWEVER...SUBSTANTIAL DRY AIR WAS NOTED IN THE 850-700 MB
LAYER...ALONG WITH POOR LAPSE RATES. THUS...THERE ARE CAPPING
CONCERNS IN THIS AREA. LESS CAPPING EXISTS FARTHER N CLOSER TO WW
583 WITH COOLING AT 700 NEAR THE COLD FRONT...AND THAT IS WHERE
DEVELOPMENT IS MOST LIKELY. STORMS SHOULD INCREASE WITH SWD EXTENT
AS THE FRONT PROGRESSES EWD INTO IA...BUT IT IS UNCLEAR WHETHER SE
NEB S OF THE OMA AREA WILL GET MUCH ACTIVITY.

AREAS AFFECTED...ERN NEB

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 142050Z - 142215Z

THE THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE LATE THIS
AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT. CONVECTIVE TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR A
POSSIBLE WW.

VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS WELL-DEFINED CLOUD BAND ASSOCIATED
WITH COLD FRONT WHICH EXTENDED FROM APPROXIMATELY 30W YKN-20E
ONL-15E OF BBW AS OF 2030Z. FRONTAL MOTION WAS SEWD AT 15 KT.
PRE-FRONTAL AIR MASS OVER ERN NEB HAS WARMED THROUGH THE 80S AND
WHEN COUPLED WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 60S TO LOWER
70S...ENVIRONMENT HAS BECOME MODERATE TO STRONGLY UNSTABLE WITH
MLCAPE OF 2000-3000 J/KG. RUC OBJECTIVE FIELDS AND VISIBLE
PRESENTATION OF BOUNDARY LAYER CLOUDS IN SATELLITE IMAGERY SUGGEST
THAT CAP IS WEAKEST OVER FAR NERN NEB...PROGRESSIVELY STRENGTHENING
WITH SEWD EXTENT TOWARD THE MO RIVER.

LATEST SHORT TERM MODEL GUIDANCE REMAINS CONSISTENT IN SUGGESTING
THAT ANY APPRECIABLE HEIGHT FALLS/DYNAMIC FORCING FOR ASCENT
ATTENDANT TO NRN PLAINS SHORT WAVE TROUGH WILL REMAIN N OF THE
NEB/SD BORDER. AS SUCH...THE HIGHEST PROBABILITY FOR STORM
INITIATION AND SUSTENANCE WILL BE ACROSS NERN NEB INTO NWRN
IA...WITH A DECREASING LIKELIHOOD SWD THROUGH E-CNTRL/SERN NEB.

TRENDS IN AREA VWPS/PROFILERS INDICATE GRADUAL VEERING TO LOW-LEVEL
WINDS IN ADVANCE OF SURFACE FRONT...RESULTING IN STRAIGHTER
HODOGRAPHS AND 35-45 KT OF DEEP LAYER SHEAR. AS SUCH...SETUP WILL
FAVOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LINE SEGMENTS AND/OR SPLITTING SUPERCELLS
CAPABLE OF MAINLY LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.

CORRECTED FOR DESCRIPTION OF SURFACE FEATURES

LARGE HAIL/DAMAGING WINDS ALONG WITH AN ISOLATED TORNADO OR TWO ARE
POSSIBLE WITH SURFACE BASED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT OCCURRING OVER
CENTRAL-NERN KS...NWRN MO...AND SERN NEB. A WW WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED
AS STORM INITIATION BECOMES MORE APPARENT.

SUBJECTIVE SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACES A 1007 MB LOW NEAR RSL...WITH A

THROUGH WRN KS AND CENTRAL NEB. SURFACE TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE 90S
TO LOW 100S SW OF THE WARM FRONT...WHILE DEWPOINTS RESIDE IN THE LOW
70S ALONG AND TO THE COOL SIDE OF THE WARM FRONT. THIS HIGH THETA-E
AIRMASS IS OVERLAID BY A PLUME OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE
RATES...RESULTING IN A VERY TO EXTREMELY UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE. THE
WARM EML IS ALSO PROVIDING A CAP TO THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT THUS
FAR. HOWEVER...UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE ASSOCIATED WITH THERMALLY
DIRECT CIRCULATION WITHIN RRQ OF CENTRAL/NRN PLAINS JET STREAK WILL
RESULT IN INCREASING FORCING FOR ASCENT WITH APPROACHING COLD FRONT
DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON INTO THE NIGHT TIME HRS. IN
ADDITION...SSWLY LOW LEVEL JET IS FORECAST TO STRENGTHEN BY
00Z...FOCUSING LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND WAA OVER NERN KS AND NWRN

INITIATION DURING THE 21-00Z TIME FRAME.

DATA...AND THEN 30-40 KT WLY FLOW AT 6 KM. THIS WIND PROFILE YIELDS
FAVORABLE HODOGRAPH STRUCTURE AND DEEP LAYER VERTICAL WIND SHEAR
/EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR VALUES AOA 40 KT/ FOR SUPERCELLS. THOUGH
MELTING POTENTIAL WILL BE HIGH GIVEN HOT/MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER...THE
COMBINATION OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES...LARGE CAPE...AND STRONG

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 142003

SPC AC 142000

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0300 PM CDT TUE JUL 14 2009

VALID 142000Z - 151200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE CNTRL PLAINS THROUGH
THE MIDDLE AND UPPER MS VALLEY AREAS...

...ERN SD THROUGH UPPER MS VALLEY REGION...

STORMS ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING OVER ERN SD WITHIN ZONE OF
FRONTAL CONVERGENCE ON SRN PERIPHERY OF DEEPER ASCENT ASSOCIATED
WITH EWD ADVANCING SHORTWAVE TROUGH. DESTABILIZATION OF THE BOUNDARY
LAYER HAS BEEN MITIGATED BY PERSISTENT LOW CLOUDS...BUT TEMPERATURES
WARMING TO NEAR 80 HAVE RESULTED AN AXIS OF 1000-1500 J/KG MLCAPE
EAST OF DEVELOPING STORMS. UPPER JET ROTATING THROUGH BASE OF UPPER
TROUGH WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT BULK SHEAR OF 40-50 KT OVER WARM
SECTOR DESPITE VEERING LOW LEVEL WIND PROFILES CLOSER TO THE FRONT.
ORGANIZED STORM STRUCTURES INCLUDING BOWING LINE SEGMENTS AND
SUPERCELLS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THE STRONGER STORMS.

LARGEST 0-1 KM HODOGRAPHS REMAIN ACROSS SRN MN WHERE SLY LOW LEVEL
JET INTERSECTS SELY NEAR SURFACE WINDS ALONG AND NORTH OF WARM
FRONT. THE BOUNDARY LAYER HAS BEEN SLOW TO DESTABILIZE OVER SRN MN
WHERE THE STRONGER LOW LEVEL SHEAR EXISTS...AND THIS MAKES THE
TORNADO THREAT CONDITIONAL. HOWEVER...A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY MAY
EXIST FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES LATER THIS AFTERNOON OR EARLY EVENING
AS TEMPERATURES WARM INTO THE LOW 80S AND BEFORE THE LOW LEVEL JET
AXIS SHIFTS EAST OF THE DESTABILIZING WARM SECTOR.

...KS THROUGH MID MS VALLEY...

REF SWOMCD 1559 FOR LATEST INFORMATION ON THIS THREAT AREA.

..DIAL.. 07/14/2009

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1127 AM CDT TUE JUL 14 2009/

...SYNOPSIS...
THE EXPECTED SYNOPTIC PATTERN EVOLUTION THROUGH EARLY WEDNESDAY
REMAINS LARGELY UNCHANGED SINCE YESTERDAY...AS A STRONG SHORTWAVE
TROUGH MOVES EWD OVER THE NRN PLAINS ALONG WITH AN ASSOCIATED COLD
FRONT. HOWEVER...THE SCENARIO IS COMPLICATED BY THE INFLUENCES OF
OVERNIGHT AND ONGOING CONVECTION FROM THE ERN DAKOTAS TO MO.

...ERN ND/NE SD INTO CENTRAL AND NRN MN THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...
ONGOING CONVECTION FROM NE SD INTO ERN ND IS IMMEDIATELY DOWNSTREAM
FROM THE PRIMARY MID LEVEL WAVE MOVING EWD OVER THE DAKOTAS...AND IT
APPEARS LIKELY THAT THIS CONVECTION WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE DAY
WHILE OVERSPREADING THE REMAINDER OF ERN ND AND NW MN. WIDESPREAD
CLOUDS/RAINFALL WILL TEND TO LIMIT DESTABILIZATION NEAR AND N OF
I-94 ACROSS MN...WITH THE GREATER THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL/DAMAGING
WINDS AND AN ISOLATED TORNADO CONFINED TO THE SRN FLANK OF THE
ONGOING CONVECTIVE CLUSTER AS IT PROGRESSES FROM NE SD INTO
WRN/CENTRAL MN ALONG THE SYNOPTIC WARM FRONT.

...SE SD/SW MN/NE NEB/NW IA THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...
THE STRONGER MID LEVEL HEIGHT FALLS WILL BRUSH THIS AREA...AND THE
LOW-LEVEL FLOW IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN AND VEER AS THE PRIMARY NRN
STREAM LLJ SEGMENT DEVELOPS NEWD TO THE UPPER MS VALLEY THIS
AFTERNOON/EVENING. THUS...EXPECT MAINLY SHALLOW ASCENT ALONG THE
COLD FRONT TO PROVIDE THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR WIDELY SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT LATER THIS AFTERNOON. SURFACE HEATING AND
GRADUAL EROSION OF LOW CLOUDS...ALONG WITH UPPER 60S BOUNDARY LAYER
DEWPOINTS...WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MLCAPE OF 1500-2000 J/KG BY MID-LATE
AFTERNOON. THIS MODERATE INSTABILITY AND DEEP LAYER SPEED
SHEAR/STRAIGHT HODOGRAPHS WILL FAVOR SUPERCELLS OR SHORT LINE
SEGMENTS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS AND LARGE HAIL. A
TORNADO OR TWO WILL BE POSSIBLE...BUT THE STRONGER LOW-LEVEL SHEAR
IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN GENERALLY E OF THE CORRIDOR OF INSTABILITY
ALONG THE COLD FRONT.

...NE KS/NW MO AND EXTREME SE NEB/SW IA THIS AFTERNOON/TONIGHT...
THE NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL PASS WELL TO THE N...LEAVING
THIS AREA ON THE SRN FRINGE OF THE 30-40 KT WLY MID LEVEL FLOW. THE
RICHER LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE /BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN THE 70S/ HAS
BEEN CONFINED TO ERN KS AS OF MID MORNING BY CONVECTIVE OUTFLOW IN
THE WAKE OF THE MCV/WEAKENING MCS ACROSS CENTRAL/NE MO. THIS
MOISTURE WILL BE AUGMENTED BY EVAPOTRANSPIRATION DURING THE
AFTERNOON AND WILL SPREAD NWD INTO NE KS/NW MO AS THE MORNING
OUTFLOW RETREATS...AND A SECONDARY WARM FRONTAL SEGMENT LIFTS NEWD
ACROSS KS IN ADVANCE OF A SECONDARY CYCLONE DEVELOPING ENEWD FROM SW
TOWARD CENTRAL/NE KS. THIS WILL RESULT IN A TRIPLE POINT SETUP BY
21-00Z NEAR OR A LITTLE W OF CNK...WITH AN EFFECTIVE WARM FRONT TO
THE E INTO NW MO.

STRONG SURFACE HEATING/MIXING ACROSS KS AND LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE
NEAR THE TRIPLE POINT SHOULD SUPPORT THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT BY
THIS EVENING. STRONG INSTABILITY /MLCAPE OF 3000-4000 J/KG/ AND
EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR OF 35-45 KT WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR SUPERCELLS
CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. A TORNADO OR
TWO MAY ALSO OCCUR WITH THE INITIAL/MORE DISCRETE STORMS GIVEN THE
LOWER LCL HEIGHTS AND SOMEWHAT ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL SHEAR E OF THE
TRIPLE POINT AND ALONG THE EFFECTIVE WARM FRONT.
HOWEVER...CONVECTION MAY GROW RATHER QUICKLY INTO AN MCS BY LATE
EVENING/EARLY TONIGHT FROM NE KS/EXTREME SE NEB EWD ACROSS NRN MO
AND SRN IA.

AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL/ERN ND

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 141956Z - 142130Z

THE THREAT FOR A FEW MARGINALLY SEVERE STORMS CAPABLE OF HAIL AND
STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL CONTINUE INTO THIS EVENING. A WW IS NOT
ANTICIPATED.

LOW-TOPPED TSTMS ARE GRADUALLY INCREASING IN COVERAGE THIS AFTERNOON
ALONG SURFACE TROUGH AND WITHIN ZONE OF DEEP ASCENT AHEAD OF STRONG
MIDLEVEL VORTICITY MAXIMUM TRANSLATING EWD THROUGH WRN ND. THIS
ACTIVITY IS FORMING ON THE NOSE OF STEEP LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES WHERE
SBCAPE HAS INCREASED TO A COUPLE HUNDRED J/KG. BIS VWP INDICATES A
CORRIDOR OF HIGHER MOMENTUM WLY FLOW /40-50 KT/ AROUND 4-5 KM...WITH
A NOTABLE DECREASE IN WIND SPEEDS BELOW 3 KM. WHILE SOME LOCALLY
STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE...THE WEAKER LOW-LEVEL WINDS
COUPLED WITH THE MARGINAL CAPE/DCAPE SHOULD TEND TO LIMIT A MORE
SUBSTANTIAL WIND THREAT. OTHERWISE...EXPECT THE MOST INTENSE STORMS
TO BE CAPABLE OF MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL GIVEN THE RELATIVELY COOL
THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 583
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
240 PM CDT TUE JUL 14 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

NORTHWEST IOWA
SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL MINNESOTA
EXTREME NORTHEAST NEBRASKA
EASTERN SOUTH DAKOTA

EFFECTIVE THIS TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 240 PM UNTIL
900 PM CDT.

HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 70
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 10 MILES NORTH
NORTHEAST OF ALEXANDRIA MINNESOTA TO 30 MILES SOUTHEAST OF
YANKTON SOUTH DAKOTA. FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE
THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU3).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...THUNDERSTORMS ARE DEVELOPING ALONG THE SURFACE COLD
FRONT AND A PRE-FRONTAL TROUGH ACROSS ERN SD...AND THIS ACTIVITY
WILL LIKELY INCREASE IN COVERAGE/INTENSITY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON
WHILE SPREADING EWD. TIME SERIES OF LOCAL PROFILERS AND VWP/S SHOW
A TREND TOWARD WEAKENING LOW-LEVEL SHEAR IN THE AREA WHERE STORMS
ARE FORMING AND WILL MOVE OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THE STRONGER
LOW-LEVEL SHEAR IS LOCATED ALONG THE WARM FRONT IN CENTRAL
MN...WHERE CLOUDS AND COOL SURFACE TEMPERATURES HAVE LIMITED
INSTABILITY. PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE COLD FRONTAL STORMS
WILL BE THE PRIMARY CONCERN THROUGH THE AFTERNOON...WITH THE
POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGING WINDS AND LARGE HAIL WITH LINE SEGMENTS
AND/OR SPLITTING SUPERCELLS.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 500. MEAN STORM
MOTION VECTOR 27035.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1557
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0142 PM CDT TUE JUL 14 2009

AREAS AFFECTED...ERN SD INTO W-CNTRL/SWRN MN AND NWRN IA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 141842Z - 142015Z

THE THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE THIS AFTERNOON
ACROSS DISCUSSION AREA. A WW WILL LIKELY BE REQUIRED BEFORE 20Z.

18Z MESOANALYSIS INDICATED A SURFACE LOW NE OF ABR WITH A TRAILING
COLD FRONT EXTENDING SSWWD TO JUST W OF A HON-MHE LINE. A WARM
FRONT/OUTFLOW COMPOSITE BOUNDARY STRETCHED ESEWD FROM THE LOW INTO
W-CNTRL MN /S OF AXN/ BEFORE CURVING MORE SSEWD THROUGH S-CNTRL MN
INTO CNTRL IA. WHILE CONSIDERABLE LOW CLOUDINESS HAS PREVAILED
ACROSS SYSTEM WARM SECTOR OVER ERN SD TODAY...BREAKS IN THE CLOUDS
COUPLED WITH THE NWD TRANSPORT OF RICHER BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE ARE
CONTRIBUTING TO THE MOST RAPID AIR MASS DESTABILIZATION FROM
YKN-FSD-BKX EWD THROUGH SWRN INTO CNTRL MN...PER 3-HR T/TD TRENDS.
CURRENT RUC OBJECTIVE FIELDS SUGGEST THAT WARM SECTOR AIR MASS IS
NOW MODERATELY UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPE OF 1000-2000 J/KG WITH
DECREASING CONVECTIVE INHIBITION.

A SHORT CONVECTIVE LINE SEGMENT IS IN THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING
ALONG COLD FRONT AS OF 1830Z OVER SWRN CLARK...SERN SPINK INTO CNTRL
BEADLE COUNTIES IN ERN SD. BASED ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY...IT
APPEARS THAT THE STRONGER FORCING FOR ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH
UPSTREAM TROUGH IS BEGINNING TO ACT ON DESTABILIZING WARM SECTOR.
EXPECT AN INCREASE IN STORM COVERAGE AND INTENSITY ALONG FRONTAL
ZONE THIS AFTERNOON AS IT PROGRESSES EWD THROUGH ERN SD. TIME
TRENDS IN THE NELIGH NEB PROFILER AND FSD VWP INDICATE GRADUALLY
VEERING WINDS IN THE LOW LEVELS...RESULTING IN INCREASINGLY STRAIGHT
HODOGRAPHS WHICH WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF LINE SEGMENTS
AND/OR SPLITTING SUPERCELLS WITH THE PRIMARY THREATS BEING LARGE
HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS.

FARTHER E ALONG WARM FRONT IN CNTRL MN...COLLOCATION OF BACKED
SURFACE WINDS AND SLY 30-40 KT LLJ WILL RESULT IN RELATIVELY STRONG
LOW-LEVEL SHEAR. ANY MORE DISCRETE STORMS WHICH CAN DEVELOP
UPSTREAM OF SURFACE WARM FRONT WILL POSE A TORNADO THREAT WHILE
APPROACHING THIS BOUNDARY LATER THIS AFTERNOON INTO EVENING.
