DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0130 PM CST THU FEB 18 2010

VALID 182000Z - 191200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
NO CHANGES TO ONGOING FORECAST REASONING.

..GUYER.. 02/18/2010

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1005 AM CST THU FEB 18 2010/

...UT...
MORNING SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS A MID LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH
TRACKING SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS MT/ID. THIS FEATURE IS EXPECTED TO
PROGRESS ACROSS PARTS OF THE GREAT BASIN TODAY BEFORE CROSSING THE
CENTRAL ROCKIES TONIGHT. COLD TEMPERATURES ALOFT AND STEEP LAPSE
RATES WILL ACCOMPANY THE SYSTEM...LEADING TO THE RISK OF SCATTERED
AFTERNOON SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF CENTRAL/SRN
UT TODAY.

...TX...
MODELS ARE IN REASONABLE AGREEMENT THAT A LOW-AMPLITUDE SOUTHERN
STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE ACROSS NORTHERN MEXICO TODAY AND
APPROACH SOUTH TX BEFORE FRI MORNING. SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL WINDS
OVER THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO WILL HELP TO MOISTEN/DESTABILIZE
COASTAL AREAS OF DEEP SOUTH TX. INCREASING FORCING FOR ASCENT MAY
LEAD TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS OFF THE LOWER TX
COAST BEFORE 19/12Z...WITH SOME CHANCE OF THESE STORMS AFFECTING THE
IMMEDIATE COAST. NO SEVERE STORMS ARE EXPECTED TODAY.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0306 AM CST THU FEB 18 2010

VALID 211200Z - 261200Z

...DISCUSSION...

SHORT WAVE TROUGH MOVING INTO THE CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS AS MENTIONED
IN THE LATEST DAY THREE CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE
EWD THROUGH THE MID/LOWER MS VALLEY ON D4 /SUN FEB 21ND/ AND
EVENTUALLY OFF THE MID/SERN ATLANTIC COASTS BY THE END OF D5 /MON
FEB 22ND/. AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW AND COLD FRONT WILL PUSH
EWD/SEWD THROUGH THE TN VALLEY...GULF COAST STATES /INCLUDING FL/
AND FINALLY OFF THE MID/SERN ATLANTIC COASTS DURING THIS TIME
FRAME.

FORECAST SOUNDINGS AND PLAN VIEW DATA SUGGEST THAT BOUNDARY LAYER
MOISTURE WILL REMAIN SOMEWHAT MARGINAL WITHIN SYSTEM WARM SECTOR
WHICH WILL LIMIT THE DEGREE OF AIR MASS DESTABILIZATION.
HOWEVER...WIND FIELD WILL EXHIBIT VEERING WITH HEIGHT WITH
SUFFICIENT LOW AND DEEP-LAYER SHEAR FOR ORGANIZED STORMS INCLUDING
SUPERCELLS AND BOWING STRUCTURES. SOME SEVERE WEATHER IS QUITE
POSSIBLE WITH THIS SYSTEM WITH THE THREAT EXTENDING FROM ERN TX EWD
ACROSS THE GULF COAST STATES.

CONCERNS REGARDING AIR MASS QUALITY AND ULTIMATE TIMING OF MIDLEVEL
SYSTEM /GIVEN FAST ZONAL FLOW REGIME/ PRECLUDE DELINEATION OF ANY
ORGANIZED SEVERE WEATHER AREAS AT THIS JUNCTURE.

THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO DECREASE AFTER D5 AS
A LONG WAVE TROUGH IS TEMPORARILY RE-ESTABLISHED OVER THE ERN CONUS.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0133 AM CST THU FEB 18 2010

VALID 201200Z - 211200Z

...SYNOPSIS...

A QUASI-ZONAL FLOW REGIME WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE CNTRL AND SRN
TIER OF STATES WITH THE PRIMARY FEATURE OF INTEREST BEING A SHORT
WAVE TROUGH WHICH IS FORECAST TO DE-AMPLIFY WHILE TRANSLATING FROM
THE LOWER CO VALLEY EWD INTO THE CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS.

IN THE LOW LEVELS...LARGE ZONAL COMPONENT TO MIDLEVEL FLOW FIELD
WILL RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LEE CYCLONE OVER THE SRN HIGH
PLAINS...THE DEVELOPMENT OF WHICH WILL BE HASTENED BY THE APPROACH
OF THE SHORT WAVE TROUGH. THIS LOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SEWD INTO
LOWER ELEVATIONS OF THE SRN PLAINS WITH THIS FEATURE PRECEDING A
WARM FRONT RETREATED NWD THROUGH THE RED RIVER VALLEY.

...OK...

SURFACE CYCLOGENESIS WILL SERVE TO ENHANCE SLY LOW-LEVEL FLOW FIELD
OVER THE SRN PLAINS...ALLOWING FOR THE GRADUAL MOISTENING OF THE
BOUNDARY LAYER TO THE S OF WARM FRONT. HOWEVER...NO DIURNAL STORMS
ARE EXPECTED AS CAP STRENGTH RELATIVE TO MOISTURE QUALITY WILL
RESULT IN LITTLE OR NO CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY.

BY SATURDAY NIGHT...THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF INCREASING LOW-LEVEL
MOISTURE AND STEEPENING MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE EXPECTED TO
CONTRIBUTE TO A WEAKLY UNSTABLE AIR MASS NEAR AND N OF SURFACE WARM
FRONT. ELEVATED TSTMS ARE FORECAST TO DEVELOP WITHIN THIS ZONE OF
DESTABILIZATION...A FEW OF WHICH MAY BE STRONG AND CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING HAIL NEAR SEVERE CRITERIA.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1224 AM CST THU FEB 18 2010

VALID 191200Z - 201200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

LARGE-SCALE PATTERN OVER THE CNTRL AND SRN TIER OF STATES WILL
REMAIN PROGRESSIVE THROUGH THE DAY TWO PERIOD. A SERIES OF MIDLEVEL
IMPULSES WILL BE EMBEDDED WITHIN THIS FLOW REGIME...THE MOST NOTABLE
OF WHICH BEING STRONG VORTICITY MAXIMUM WHICH WILL TRANSLATE SEWD
FROM THE FAR ERN PACIFIC INTO THE LOWER CO VALLEY.

IN THE LOW LEVELS...A COLD FRONTAL SEGMENT WILL PUSH SWD INTO THE
SRN PLAINS AND LOWER MS VALLEY IN WAKE OF DEPARTING MIDLEVEL SYSTEM
TO THE E. FARTHER W...CYCLOGENESIS ATTENDANT TO SHORT WAVE TROUGH
MOVING ONTO THE CA COAST IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP OVER THE GREAT BASIN
WHICH WILL SERVE TO ENHANCE BAROCLINIC ZONE EXTENDING EWD INTO THE
CNTRL ROCKIES.

...CA COAST...

CONSIDERABLE DYNAMIC COOLING/FORCING FOR ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH
ABOVE-MENTIONED SYSTEM MOVING ONSHORE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO POCKETS OF
WEAK CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY SUCH THAT ISOLATED TSTMS WILL BE
POSSIBLE ALONG AND IN THE WAKE OF SURFACE FRONT MOVING INLAND.

...DEEP S TX...

THE COUPLING OF LOW-LEVEL WAA AND WEAKENING DCVA ASSOCIATED WITH
PASSAGE OF LOW-LATITUDE SHORT WAVE TROUGH MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR
ISOLATED TSTMS FRIDAY MORNING. ANY ONGOING ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO
MOVE INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO PRIOR TO MIDDAY.

...GREAT BASIN THROUGH THE FOUR CORNERS REGION...

THE PRESENCE OF STEEP LAPSE RATES...LOW TO MIDLEVEL BAROCLINIC ZONE
AND OROGRAPHIC FORCING MAY CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF
CONVECTIVE UPDRAFTS SUPPORTIVE OF SPORADIC LIGHTNING THROUGH THE
DIURNAL HEATING CYCLE. THE ABSENCE OF ANY APPRECIABLE DYNAMIC
FORCING FOR ASCENT IS EXPECTED TO LIMIT A MORE ROBUST THUNDER
THREAT. THUS...NO AREA WILL BE INCLUDED IN THIS FORECAST.

VALID 181200Z - 191200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

FLOW WILL BECOME WLY ACROSS THE GREAT PLAINS AND MS VALLEY TODAY AS
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH DIGS SEWD INTO THE CNTRL ROCKIES. LAPSE RATES
WILL BE QUITE STEEP BENEATH THE COLD POOL OF THE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH
WHICH COMBINED WITH STRONG LARGE-SCALE ASCENT WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT ACROSS PARTS OF SRN AND CNTRL UT
THIS AFTERNOON. FURTHER SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS...A
LOW-LEVEL JET IS FORECAST TO STRENGTHEN TONIGHT WHICH WILL HELP
BRING LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE NWD ACROSS THE SRN TX COASTAL PLAIN.
ALTHOUGH INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN WEAK ACROSS SOUTH TX...SFC
DEWPOINTS MAY REACH THE UPPER 50S TO NEAR 60 F. ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG THE WEST EDGE OF THE
MOIST AXIS AS AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH MOVES INTO THE SRN PLAINS LATE
TONIGHT. NONE OF THE ACTIVITY ACROSS THE CONUS TODAY OR TONIGHT IS
EXPECTED TO REACH SEVERE LIMITS.
