DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 040049
SWODY1
SPC AC 040048

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0748 PM CDT TUE MAY 03 2011

VALID 040100Z - 041200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
EARLY EVENING WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWED A LONGWAVE TROUGH EXTENDING
FROM THE GREAT LAKES SWWD TO E TX/LOWER MS VALLEY REGION. A 100+ KT
WLY UPPER LEVEL JET EXTENDING FROM TX TO THE BASE OF THE TROUGH WILL
MAINTAIN AN EWD PROGRESSION OF THIS SYSTEM WITH THE THROUGH BECOMING
NEUTRALLY ORIENTED AS IT APPROACHES OH/TN VALLEYS AND CENTRAL GULF
COAST STATES. HEIGHT FALLS SPREADING EWD AND DIFFLUENT FLOW ACROSS
THE SRN/MID ATLANTIC STATES THIS FORECAST PERIOD SHOULD SUPPORT A
CONTINUATION OF CONVECTION AS THE TROUGH AND ATTENDANT COLD FRONT
ADVANCE EWD.

...ERN PA...
OVERALL SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WILL CONTINUE TO DIMINISH THROUGH THE
EVENING AS ONGOING TSTMS EXTENDING FROM CUMBERLAND COUNTY PA TO
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY PA PROGRESS ENEWD. THIS TREND IS SUPPORTED BY
THE LOSS OF STRONGER SURFACE HEATING AND SOME CLOUD COVER FURTHER
INCREASING SURFACE BASED INHIBITION AND THUS LIMITING NEW SURFACE
BASED TSTM DEVELOPMENT. CONTINUED HEIGHT FALLS AS THE UPSTREAM
TROUGH MOVES EWD AND FORCING ALONG THE FRONTAL ZONE SHOULD SUPPORT
INCREASINGLY ELEVATED CONVECTION/EMBEDDED TSTMS THROUGH LATE
EVENING...THOUGH SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WILL BE MINIMAL.

...ERN GA/CAROLINAS INTO CENTRAL VA...
AT 00Z...REGIONAL RADAR IMAGERY SHOWED A BROKEN LINE OF STORMS
EXTENDING FROM WEST CENTRAL-SWRN VA SWWD THROUGH FAR WRN NC TO
UPSTATE SC AND EAST CENTRAL GA. THIS ACTIVITY APPEARS TO HAVE
DEVELOPED AS THE SRN EXTENT OF THE COLD FRONT MOVED JUST EAST OF THE
HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE SRN APPALACHIANS INTO A MODERATELY UNSTABLE
AND STRONGLY SHEARED AIR MASS. EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR /AROUND 50 KT/
WILL REMAIN SUPPORTIVE FOR ORGANIZED STORMS AS SWLY MIDLEVEL WINDS
STRENGTHEN WITH THE APPROACH OF THE UPSTREAM TROUGH. HOWEVER...THE
LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING WILL CONTINUE TO AID IN THE REDUCTION OF
AVAILABLE SURFACE BASED INSTABILITY. THIS COMBINED WITH INCREASING
INHIBITION WILL SUPPORT A SPATIOTEMPORAL REDUCTION IN SURFACE BASED
TSTMS.

SPC AC 031248

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0748 AM CDT TUE MAY 03 2011

VALID 031300Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE CNTRL
APPALACHIANS AND MID ATLANTIC STATES...

...SYNOPSIS...
OZARKS SHORTWAVE IMPULSE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE ENE INTO THE OH AND TN
VLYS TODAY...PHASING WITH NRN STREAM DISTURBANCE NOW OVER WI. THE
RESULTING LARGER SCALE TROUGH SHOULD ASSUME A NEARLY NEUTRAL TILT BY
THE END OF THE PERIOD...AND EXTEND FROM LK HURON TO THE SRN
APPALACHIANS.

AT LWR LVLS...SFC WAVE NOW OVER WV SHOULD REMAIN ELONGATED BUT
SOMEWHAT DEEPEN AS IT MOVES NEWD. THE MAIN CENTER SHOULD REACH ERN
PA BY EVE...WHILE TRAILING COLD FRONT CONTINUES E TO THE ERN SLOPES
OF THE CNTRL/SRN APPALACHIANS. THE LOW SHOULD CONTINUE NE INTO
CNTRL/NRN NEW ENGLAND TONIGHT/EARLY WED AS COLD FRONT MOVES OFF THE
MID ATLANTIC CST. DIFFUSE WARM FRONT NOW OVER NRN MD AND PA SHOULD
REFORM NWD INTO ERN NY/CNTRL NEW ENG LATER TODAY...ALLOWING A NARROW
CORRIDOR OF MODIFIED GULF AIR TO SPREAD NNE ACROSS THE SUSQUEHANNA
AND DELAWARE RVR VLYS.

...CNTRL APPALACHIANS AND ADJACENT PIEDMONT...
BROAD BAND OF POST-COLD FRONTAL SHOWERS/EMBEDDED TSTMS NOW EXTENDING
FROM PARTS OF THE LWR MS AND TN VLYS NNE INTO OH LIKELY WILL PERSIST
AND SHIFT EWD WITH THE FRONT THROUGH THE PERIOD. WHILE AMPLE
UNIDIRECTIONAL CLOUD LAYER FLOW WILL BE PRESENT FOR
ORGANIZED/SUSTAINED STORMS...WEAK ELEVATED INSTABILITY SHOULD KEEP
ACTIVITY FROM POSING A SVR WEATHER THREAT.

MEANWHILE...CONTINUED EWD MOTION OF OZARKS UPR IMPULSE SHOULD FOSTER
GRADUAL STRENGTHENING OF WV/PA SFC WAVE AND ASSOCIATED SSWLY LLJ
ALONG THE ERN SLOPES OF THE APPALACHIANS. WHILE SATELLITE AND SFC
OBS SHOW A RELATIVELY DRY POCKET OF AIR CONTINUING TO RESIDE OVER
ERN NC AND ADJACENT REGIONS...THE LLJ SHOULD ALLOW MORE SUBSTANTIAL
MOISTURE /PW AOA 1.25 INCHES/ TO CONTINUE SPREADING NNE AHEAD OF SFC
WAVE. COUPLED WITH SFC HEATING...THIS SHOULD YIELD POCKETS OF
MODERATE INSTABILITY WITH SBCAPE OF 1500 TO PERHAPS 2000 J/KG OVER
PARTS OF VA...ERN WV...MD AND SRN/ERN PA. RELATIVELY WEAK MID LVL
LAPSE RATES SHOULD...HOWEVER...LIMIT OVERALL DEGREE OF INSTABILITY.

CONVERGENCE INVOF THE SFC LOW SHOULD FOSTER TSTM DEVELOPMENT BY
EARLY-MID AFTN OVER PARTS OF PA/MD AND VA/WV. DEVELOPMENT MAY OCCUR
A BIT LATER SWD ALONG COLD FRONT INTO THE WRN CAROLINAS AND GA.
GRADUAL STRENGTHENING OF SWLY MID/UPR LVL FLOW WITH APPROACH OF UPR
TROUGH EXPECTED TO SHOULD ENABLE A FEW SUSTAINED
STORMS...SUPERCELLS...AND BROKEN LINE SEGMENTS. THESE MAY CONTAIN
LOCALLY DMGG WINDS AND...ESPECIALLY ALONG/AHEAD OF SFC LOW TRACK IN
ERN WV/CNTRL MD AND PA...POSSIBLE TORNADOES.

DESPITE CONTINUED INCREASE IN MID/UPR LVL FLOW...THE OVERALL SVR
WEATHER THREAT SHOULD DIMINISH BY LATE EVE AS LOW LVL INSTABILITY
WANES.

...ERN AL INTO GA/WRN SC...
MODERATE INSTABILITY WILL DEVELOP AHEAD OF COLD FRONT CROSSING THE
SRN APPALACHIAN REGION THIS AFTN. BUT RELATIVELY WEAK MID LVL LAPSE
RATES AND MORE MODEST WIND FIELD COMPARED TO POINTS FARTHER N
SUGGEST THAT MULTICELLS WILL BE THE PRIMARY STORM MODE. WHILE
STRONG WIND GUSTS AND MARGINALLY SVR HAIL MAY OCCUR...ANY SVR THREAT
SHOULD REMAIN ISOLD AND/OR OF LIMITED DURATION.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0252 AM CDT TUE MAY 03 2011

VALID 061200Z - 111200Z

...DISCUSSION...
ON FRI/D4...MOISTURE WILL BEGIN TO RETURN NWD INTO THE SRN PLAINS AS
A WEAK LEE TROUGH DEVELOPS DURING THE DAY BENEATH A WEAK NWLY FLOW
ALOFT. FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE THAT WHILE STRONG HEATING MAY
RESULT IN CONVECTION ALONG THE DRYLINE...ACTIVITY MAY NOT BE
PARTICULARLY SEVERE WITH ONLY 50S DEWPOINTS AND CAPPING CONCERNS.
ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT COULD OCCUR OVER THE MID MO/UPPER MS VALLEY
FRIDAY NIGHT DRIVEN BY A LOW LEVEL JET...BUT MODELS DO NOT AGREE ON
THE LOCATION AND MAGNITUDE OF THE FORCING MECHANISMS.

THIS PATTERN IS FORECAST TO PERSIST THROUGH DAY 5...BUT
PREDICTABILITY AND OVERALL POTENTIAL DO NOT WARRANT SEVERE AREAS AT
THIS TIME.

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE DIFFERENCES IN THE GUIDANCE...THEY DO AGREE THAT
BEGINNING ON SUN/D6...A LARGER SCALE TROUGH WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE
WRN STATES...WITH RIDGING DEVELOPING AHEAD OF THIS TROUGH OVER THE
PLAINS STATES. THIS WOULD PORTEND A GREATER SEVERE THREAT...WITH THE
POSSIBILITY OF 3-4 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF SIGNIFICANT SEVERE DEVELOPING
FROM THE PLAINS STATES INTO THE MIDWEST BEGINNING ON MON/D7 INTO
TUE/D8 AND LIKELY EXTENDING INTO D9. IF TREND IN MODEL GUIDANCE
PERSISTS...SEVERE RISK AREAS WILL LIKELY BE FORTHCOMING IN
SUBSEQUENT D4-8 OUTLOOKS.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1254 AM CDT TUE MAY 03 2011

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM WRN NC TO CENTRAL AND ERN
PA...

...SYNOPSIS...
FURTHER PHASING OF A SRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH...NOW LOCATED OVER
THE OZARKS PER WATER VAPOR IMAGERY...AND A SYSTEM OVER THE UPPER MS
VALLEY/WRN GREAT LAKES WILL OCCUR TODAY ACROSS THE OH/TN VALLEYS.
THE PHASED TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO BECOME NEUTRALLY ORIENTED DURING
THE SECOND HALF OF THE FORECAST PERIOD WITH THIS DEEP TROUGH
SHIFTING EWD AND EXTENDING FROM THE SRN APPALACHIANS TO SRN ONTARIO
BY 12Z WEDNESDAY.

AT THE SURFACE...AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE EXPECTED TO BE LOCATED OVER
ERN KY AT 12Z TODAY IS FORECAST TO DEEPEN SOME AS IT TRACKS ACROSS
WV REACHING SRN/CENTRAL PA BY LATE AFTERNOON. A COLD FRONT TRAILING
SSWWD FROM THIS LOW WILL ADVANCE EWD REACHING THE ERN SLOPES OF THE
SRN/CENTRAL APPALACHIANS FROM WRN SC TO THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS TO
CENTRAL/NERN PA BY 04/00Z. A BOUNDARY INITIALLY EXTENDING FROM ERN
KY THROUGH MD TO DELMARVA WILL MOVE NWD THROUGH PA AS A WARM FRONT
REACHING NRN PA AND FAR SERN NY BY LATE AFTERNOON. AS THE SURFACE
LOW TRACKS NE TOWARD NRN VT TUESDAY NIGHT...THE COLD FRONT IS
EXPECTED TO MOVE OFF THE MIDDLE/SRN ATLANTIC COASTS AND EXTEND
THROUGH NRN FL BY 12Z WEDNESDAY.

...WRN NC THROUGH MID ATLANTIC REGION...
POST-FRONTAL CONVECTION AND EMBEDDED TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO BE
ONGOING FROM THE LOWER MS VALLEY TO KY/SRN OH AT THE START OF THE
FORECAST PERIOD. A 40-50 KT SWLY LLJ EXTENDING FROM ERN TN TO SRN
OH WILL TRANSLATE NEWD INTO WRN PA THIS MORNING...AND ANY CONVECTION
DEVELOPING NEWD WILL HAVE A POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE LOCALLY STRONGER
WIND GUSTS. OVERALL SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WITH THIS EARLY ACTIVITY
WILL BE LOW GIVEN THE LACK OF STRONGER INSTABILITY.

MEANWHILE...HEIGHT FALLS /30-60 METERS AT 500 MB/ SPREADING ACROSS
AND IN LEE OF THE SRN AND CENTRAL APPALACHIANS WILL SUPPORT A
STRENGTHENING SSWLY LLJ FROM NC TO NY BY THIS AFTERNOON. THE SLY
WINDS WILL AID IN SUSTAINING A MOIST AIR MASS ALREADY IN PLACE FROM
ERN-NRN VA/MD INTO CENTRAL/SERN PA WITH SURFACE DEWPOINTS RISING
INTO THE LOWER 60S. ALTHOUGH MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES SHOULD NOT BE
VERY STEEP...SURFACE HEATING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MODERATE INSTABILITY
FROM ERN WV AND CENTRAL/NRN VA INTO CENTRAL/ERN PA. FARTHER S INTO
WRN NC...WEAKER MOISTURE AND WEAK MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES SHOULD RESULT
IN MARGINAL INSTABILITY.

CONVERGENCE INVOF THE SURFACE LOW AND SWD ALONG THE COLD FRONT
THROUGH ERN WV/WRN VA COMBINED WITH HEIGHT FALLS WILL SUPPORT NEW
TSTM DEVELOPMENT BY EARLY-MID AFTERNOON AS THE AIR MASS BECOMES
MODERATELY UNSTABLE. STRENGTHENING SWLY MIDLEVEL WINDS AND DEEP
SHEAR WILL SUPPORT LINE SEGMENTS AND SUPERCELL STRUCTURES. IN
ADDITION TO A THREAT FOR HAIL AND STRONG WIND GUSTS ACROSS THE
SLIGHT RISK AREA...INCREASING LOW LEVEL SHEAR /ESPECIALLY ALONG THE
SURFACE LOW TRACK/ AS THE LLJ STRENGTHENS WILL SUPPORT A TORNADO
THREAT. THE TORNADO THREAT SHOULD BE GREATEST DURING THE AFTERNOON
AND EARLY EVENING FROM ERN WV INTO CENTRAL VA AND NWD THROUGH
WRN/CENTRAL MD TO CENTRAL/ERN PA.

OVERALL SEVERE WEATHER THREAT IS EXPECTED TO DIMINISH BY LATE
EVENING AS INSTABILITY WEAKENS.

...ERN AL AND GA...
A MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS SHOULD DEVELOP AHEAD OF THE COLD
FRONT ACROSS THIS REGION TODAY SUPPORTING TSTMS INTO THE AFTERNOON.
WEAKER LOW LEVEL WINDS AND EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR OF 20-30 KT SUGGEST
MULTICELLS WILL BE THE PRIMARY STORM MODE. A STRONGER MIDLEVEL WARM
LAYER PER FORECAST SOUNDINGS IN THE 600-800 MB LAYER MAY TEND TO
LIMIT UPDRAFT STRENGTH. ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS SHOULD BE THE
PRIMARY THREAT.

1249 AM CDT TUE MAY 03 2011

VALID 041200Z - 051200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

CORRECTED FOR WORD CHOICE

...SYNOPSIS...
A HIGHLY AMPLIFIED UPPER TROUGH AXIS WILL EXTEND FROM NEAR LAKE ERIE
SWD INTO THE OH/TN VALLEYS WED MORNING AND WILL DRIFT EWD...LIKELY
BECOMING A CLOSED LOW OVER NY OVERNIGHT. AT THE SURFACE...A COLD
FRONT SHOULD EXTEND SWD FROM A WEAK LOW OVER SRN NEW ENGLAND TO THE
MID ATLANTIC COAST. WHILE MOISTURE AND WEAK INSTABILITY MAY REMAIN
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD OVER ERN NC...THE FRONT SHOULD MOVE
OFFSHORE BY LATE MORNING.

TO THE W...ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE INTO THE
NRN PLAINS DURING THE DAY...WITH A COLD FRONT ROUGHLY FROM SERN SD
INTO SWRN KS BY 00Z. MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY WILL BE LIMITED WITH
DEWPOINTS IN THE 40S F.

...MID ATLANTIC COAST INTO COASTAL NEW ENGLAND...
AFOREMENTIONED COLD FRONT WILL CLEAR THE NC COAST EARLY BUT SOME
MOISTURE MAY REMAIN OVER SRN NEW ENGLAND WITH THE SURFACE LOW MOVING
VERY SLOWLY. ALTHOUGH SHEAR PROFILES WILL BE STRONG IN THIS
REGION...INSTABILITY AND LAPSE RATES WILL BE VERY WEAK...THUS SEVERE
WEATHER APPEARS UNLIKELY AT THIS TIME.

...ERN KS/NEB/SD...WRN IA/NWRN MO...
STRONG FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH AN UPPER SHORTWAVE AND COLD FRONT MAY
BE ENOUGH FOR AT LEAST ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS CNTRL AND ERN
NEB INTO THE MID MO VALLEY LATE. FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW THAT WHILE
STEEP LAPSE RATES EXIST ALOFT...CAPPING WILL BE AN ISSUE FOR MUCH OF
THE DAY DUE TO LACK OF SUBSTANTIAL LOW LEVEL MOISTURE.
BUT...ISOLATED TO SCATTERED STORMS ARE LIKELY BY AROUND
00Z...CONTINUING OVERNIGHT. MARGINAL HAIL WOULD APPEAR TO BE THE
PRIMARY THREAT WITH THIS ACTIVITY...ESPECIALLY IF IT IS
NOCTURNAL...BUT THE THREAT APPEARS TOO LIMITED AT THIS TIME FOR ANY
AREAS.

1246 AM CDT TUE MAY 03 2011

VALID 051200Z - 061200Z

...SYNOPSIS/DISCUSSION...
HIGH PRESSURE IN THE WAKE OF THE ERN TROUGH WILL COVER MUCH OF THE
CNTRL AND ERN CONUS ON THU/D3 WITH GENERALLY COOL AND DRY CONDITIONS
FOR MUCH OF THE DAY.

THE MAIN AREA OF INTEREST WILL BE ACROSS THE MID MO VALLEY INTO THE
MIDWESTERN STATES WITH AN UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH AXIS MOVING
ESEWD TO THE MS RIVER BY 00Z FRI. A WEAK LOW PRESSURE TROUGH WILL
ALSO EXIST IN GENERALLY THE SAME AREA...AND WILL SLIDE EWD INTO THE
OH VALLEY BY FRI MORNING.

WITH AFOREMENTIONED HIGH PRESSURE IN PLACE...THERE WILL BE LITTLE
MOISTURE RETURN NWD FOR INSTABILITY. WHILE SOME CONVECTION IS
ANTICIPATED...IT APPEARS TOO MARGINAL FOR ANY SEVERE AREAS.
