DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1059 AM CDT TUE MAY 08 2007

VALID 081630Z - 091200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM SOUTHWEST TX INTO SOUTHERN
OK...

UPPER TROUGH FROM CO TO AZ CONTINUES TO GRADUALLY WEAKEN AND SHIFT
SLOWLY EWD. THIS WILL MAINTAIN A MDT SWLY MID LEVEL FLOW FROM SWRN
TX INTO OK. MOISTURE OVERNIGHT HAS CONTINUED TO MOVE WWD ACROSS SRN
NM AND FAR W TX AND MAINTAINED ACTIVE STORMS ACROSS THIS REGION.
CONVECTIVELY REINFORCED BOUNDARY/COLD FRONT EXTENDS FROM SCENTRAL OK
WSWWD TO JUST S OF MAF.

THE UPSLOPE E/SELYS CONTINUING SWRN TX AND MORE NELY ON N SIDE OF
BOUNDARY ACROSS SERN NM INTO NWRN TX...WILL MAINTAIN BOTH SHEAR AND
INSTABILITY TO SUPPORT SEVERE STORMS THRU TONIGHT.

HEATING TO THE S OF THE BOUNDARY WILL DESTABILIZE AIRMASS THIS
AFTERNOON ACROSS TX. THE MOST INSTABILITY WILL BE NCENTRAL/NERN TX
IN AREA OF DEEPER MOISTURE WITH MLCAPES OF 2000 J/KG. MLCAPES SWRN
TX EXPECTED TO BE GENERALLY IN THE 1000-1500 J/KG RANGE.

BY MID AFTERNOON SURFACE BASED CONVECTION SHOULD BE ABLE TO DEVELOP
IN VICINITY OF THE BOUNDARY...PARTICULARLY IN THE UPSLOPE REGION OF
SWRN TX/SERN NM. 50-60 KT OF DEEP LAYER SHEAR SWRN TX SUPPORTS
SUPERCELL STORMS. WHILE PRIMARY THREAT WILL BE LARGE HAIL...ENHANCED
LOW LEVEL SHEAR VICINITY OF THE BOUNDARY SUGGEST A COUPLE TORNADOES
ARE POSSIBLE.

FURTHER E ACROSS CENTRAL TX INTO SRN OK...WHILE MOISTURE/INSTABILITY
IS GREATER...DEEP LAYER SHEAR IS WEAKER. WITH HEATING SURFACE
BASED THUNDERSTORMS WILL BECOME COMMON VICINITY AND E OF SURFACE
BOUNDARY. HOWEVER DEEP LAYER SHEAR AROUND 30KT WILL LEAD TO
MULTICELLULAR STORMS WITH LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED WET DOWNBURSTS.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 081221
SWODY1
SPC AC 081218

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0718 AM CDT TUE MAY 08 2007

VALID 081300Z - 091200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM SOUTHWEST TX INTO SOUTHERN
OK...

UPPER TROUGH OVER THE ROCKIES CONTINUES TO SLOWLY WEAKEN AND MOVE
EASTWARD THIS MORNING. MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN AGREEMENT THAT WESTERLY
MID LEVEL WINDS WILL INCREASE ACROSS TX TODAY AS TROUGH MOVES INTO
SOUTHWEST TX/NM...WHILE SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL WINDS REMAIN ACROSS THE
REGION. NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BEEN ONGOING THIS MORNING FROM
THE ELP AREA INTO OK. THESE STORMS HAVE REINFORCED THE COLD
FRONT/OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ACROSS THE REGION...WHICH WILL LIKELY ACT AS
THE MAIN FOCUS FOR STRONG/SEVERE STORMS TODAY.

..SOUTHEAST NM/SOUTHWEST TX...
PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT SCATTERED STRONG STORMS WILL PERSIST
THROUGH THE MORNING ACROSS PARTS OF WEST TX AND SOUTHEAST NM.
SOUTHEASTERLY LOW LEVEL/UPSLOPE FLOW ACROSS THIS REGION IS AIDING
LIFT...WHILE APPROACHING UPPER TROUGH PROVIDES FAVORABLE LARGE SCALE
ASCENT. SUFFICIENT VERTICAL SHEAR EXISTS ACROSS THIS REGION FOR
SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF LARGE HAIL. THIS ACTIVITY MAY HAVE A HARD
TIME MAINTAINING INTENSITY AS IT MOVES INTO MORE STABLE LOW-LEVEL
AIR MASS OVER WEST TX LATER TODAY.

..CENTRAL TX INTO SOUTHERN OK...
CONVECTIVE REINFORCED COLD FRONT CURRENTLY EXTENDS FROM NEAR ABI
INTO SOUTHWEST OK. VERY MOIST AND MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS
RESIDES EAST OF THE BOUNDARY...WHERE SOME DAYTIME HEATING IS ALSO
LIKELY TODAY. SCATTERED STORMS ARE FORECAST TO INTENSIFY ALONG THIS
BOUNDARY BY MID AFTERNOON...SPREADING EASTWARD THROUGH THE EVENING.
VERTICAL SHEAR IS STRONGEST OVER OK/NORTH TX...AND WEAKENS WITH
SOUTHWARD EXTENT. A FEW STORMS IN THIS ZONE WILL BE CAPABLE OF
LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. STORMS MAY DEVELOP SOUTHWARD INTO
THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN MEXICO...AND SUBSEQUENTLY INTO THE RIO
GRANDE VALLEY OF WEST CENTRAL TX THIS EVENING.

..LOWER AND MID MS VALLEY...
A RELATIVELY MOIST AND MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS IS EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON FROM PARTS OF IL SOUTHWESTWARD INTO MO/AR/LA
AND NORTHEAST TX. ISOLATED AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE
ALONG THIS AXIS...BUT VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE QUITE WEAK. HAIL AND
GUSTY WINDS COULD OCCUR WITH STRONGER CELLS...BUT ORGANIZED SEVERE
STORMS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED.

..NRN AND CNTRL STATES...
MEDIUM RANGE MODEL FORECASTS ARE SOMEWHAT IN AGREEMENT BUILDING AN
UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE IN PLACE ACROSS THE CNTRL STATES EARLY IN THE DAY
4 TO 8 PERIOD. THE DEVELOPING RIDGE WOULD SHIFT THE STRONGER
MID-LEVEL FLOW NWD INTO THE NRN STATES ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WITH
THE LARGE-SCALE PATTERN LIKELY PERSISTING INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. THIS
WOULD INCREASE THE SEVERE POTENTIAL ACROSS THE NRN HIGH PLAINS...NRN
PLAINS AND UPPER MIDWEST FOR MUCH OF THE DAY 4 TO 8 DAY PERIOD. AT
THIS POINT...MANY QUESTIONS REMAIN ACROSS THE NRN STATES INCLUDING
THE TIMING OF SHORTWAVE TROUGHS MOVING OVER THE TOP OF THE RIDGE AND
THE AMOUNT OF INSTABILITY. THE CNTRL PLAINS WILL LIKELY HAVE MORE
INSTABILITY BUT THE SEVERE THREAT THERE WILL DEPEND ON HOW STRONG
THE UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE BECOMES. AS A RESULT...CONFIDENCE IS TOO LOW
TO FORECAST AN AREA WITH AN ENHANCED SEVERE WEATHER THREAT ATTM.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0229 AM CDT TUE MAY 08 2007

VALID 101200Z - 111200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE LOWER MS
VALLEY AND OZARK PLATEAU...

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE NRN ROCKIES
AND NRN HIGH PLAINS...

..LOWER MS VALLEY AND OZARK PLATEAU...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO MOVE EWD ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS
WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY. AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM...ABUNDANT
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE WILL BE IN PLACE ACROSS THE LOWER MS VALLEY AND
OZARK PLATEAU REGION. LARGE-SCALE ASCENT AHEAD OF THE UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH AND SFC HEATING SHOULD PROMOTE SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THE REGION THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

MID-LEVEL FLOW WITH THE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO BE
RELATIVELY WEAK THURSDAY. AS A RESULT...FORECAST SOUNDINGS ACROSS
THE REGION SHOW INSUFFICIENT SHEAR PROFILES FOR SUPERCELLS.
HOWEVER...ENOUGH VERTICAL SHEAR SHOULD EXIST FOR ORGANIZED
MULTICELLS LATE THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. THE GREATEST
SEVERE THREAT WILL LIKELY EXIST WITH THUNDERSTORM CLUSTERS THAT
DEVELOP NEAR MAXIMUMS IN INSTABILITY. ANY THREAT SHOULD REMAIN
ISOLATED AND CONCENTRATED NEAR PEAK HEATING.

..NRN ROCKIES/NRN HIGH PLAINS...
AN UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE IS FORECAST TO BE IN PLACE ACROSS THE FOUR
CORNERS REGION AND CNTRL ROCKIES WITH WSWLY FLOW ALOFT ACROSS THE
NRN ROCKIES. THE NAM/GFS AND NAMKF SOLUTIONS MOVE A SUBTLE SHORTWAVE
TROUGH EWD ACROSS THE NRN ROCKIES THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
MODEL FORECASTS ALSO BRING A 50 KT MID-LEVEL JET ACROSS THE REGION
THURSDAY WHICH WOULD INCREASE VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES DURING THE
DAY. IN ADDITION...FORECAST SOUNDINGS DEVELOP ENOUGH INSTABILITY
WHICH COMBINED WITH THE MODERATE TO STRONG SHEAR WOULD BE SUFFICIENT
FOR AN ISOLATED THREAT OF SEVERE STORMS. AS CONFIDENCE INCREASES
CONCERNING INSTABILITY...THE EXTENT OF THE SEVERE THREAT IN THIS
REGION WILL BECOME MORE CLEAR IN LATER OUTLOOKS.

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF CNTRL AND
SWRN TX...

..CNTRL/SWRN TX...
SRN PART OF THE PERSISTENT WRN STATES TROUGH WILL GRADUALLY WEAKEN
AND BEGIN SHEARING TO THE NORTHEAST TUE/TUE NIGHT. A SUBTLE LEAD
SHORTWAVE TROUGH...NOW OVER W TX...WILL LIFT NEWD AND WEAKEN EARLY
TUE. IN ITS WAKE...A FRONT WILL MOVE SWD INTO THE TRANSPECOS REGION
TUE MORNING. REMNANT INVERTED TROUGH FEATURE WILL EXIST NEWD FROM
THERE INTO NCNTRL TX THROUGH THE DAY.

RECENT MCS ACTIVITY HAS LEFT A COMPLICATED ARRAY OF BOUNDARIES AND
ALSO NEUTRALIZED LAPSE RATES ALOFT ACROSS A GOOD PORTION OF SWRN TX
DURING THE PAST 24-HRS. GIVEN THAT UPSTREAM TROUGH HAS YET TO EJECT
NEWD...PRESSURE FALLS OVER THE SRN ROCKIES SHOULD INDUCE/MAINTAIN AN
ELY LOW-LEVEL FETCH OF MID-UPR 60S DEW POINTS ALONG/S OF THE
AFOREMENTIONED FRONT/INVERTED TROUGH.

STRONGEST HEATING SHOULD DEVELOP GENERALLY WEST OF THE RIO GRANDE
VLY WHERE DEVELOPMENT OF A HEAT LOW OVER NERN MEXICO WILL MAINTAIN
MOIST ELY FLOW FROM SCNTRL TX WWD. POCKETS OF HEATING/MODEST
INSTABILITY COULD ALSO FORM IN THE BIG BEND...STOCKTON PLATEAU
REGIONS. TSTMS WILL MOST LIKELY FAVOR THESE REGIONS DURING PEAK
HEATING...WITH HIGHEST PROBABILITIES TO THE WEST OF THE RIO GRANDE
VLY. OTHERWISE...STRONG STORMS MAY ALSO DEVELOP NEWD ALONG THE
INVERTED TROUGH AXIS INTO PARTS OF THE EDWARDS PLATEAU AND NCNTRL
TX...BUT MUCH UNCERTAINTY EXISTS ON THIS SCENARIO.

THOUGH THE UPPER FLOW WILL TEND TO WEAKEN...40-50 KTS OF SWLY H5
FLOW ATOP THE ELY LOW-LEVEL TRAJECTORIES WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR
SUPERCELLS WITH LARGE HAIL...ON EITHER SIDE OF THE RIO GRANDE. MOST
RIGOROUS ACTIVITY WILL PROBABLY LAUNCH OFF THE MEXICAN AND SWRN TX
MOUNTAINS AND MOVE/DEVELOP NNEWD INTO PARTS OF THE LWR ELEVATIONS OF
SWRN/SCNTRL TX DURING THE LATE EVENING WITH ATTENDANT HAIL/DAMAGING
WINDS.

..ARKLATEX REGION NWD INTO THE LWR OH VLY...
BROADLY CONFLUENT LOW-LEVEL FLOW WILL LIKELY BE THE IMPETUS FOR
ANOTHER FOCUSED ZONE OF TSTMS TUESDAY AFTN/EVE FROM IL SWWD ACROSS
THE MID-SOUTH INTO PARTS OF AR AND LA. AIR MASS WILL ONCE AGAIN
BECOME UNSTABLE WITH SFC HEATING AND MLCAPES WILL RANGE 1500-2000
J/KG. THIS REGION WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE STRONGER BELT OF SWLY
FLOW ALOFT LOCATED ACROSS THE PLAINS...RESULTING IN WEAK VERTICAL
SHEAR. STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES...HOWEVER...WILL BE FAVORABLE
FOR ISOLD HAIL AND PERHAPS HIGH WINDS IN THE STRONGER STORMS.
ACTIVITY WILL LARGELY BE DIURNALLY DRIVEN WITH A DECREASING TREND
00-03Z.
