MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0656
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF CENTRAL/SRN TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 205...

VALID 180227Z - 180330Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 205
CONTINUES.

THREAT FOR DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL REMAIN LIKELY ACROSS WW 205.

NEW WW MAY BE REQUIRED AROUND 05Z FOR ERN PARTS OF THE SAN ANTONIO
AND HOUSTON COUNTY WARNING AREAS.

REGIONAL RADARS INDICATED A QUASI-LINEAR LINE OF STRONG TO SEVERE
TSTMS EXTENDING ALONG EXTENT OF COLD FRONT FROM GRAYSON COUNTY TX TO
SAN SABA COUNTY...AND THEN SWWD ALONG DRY LINE INTO VAL VERDE
COUNTY. SRN MOST STORMS ALONG THIS LINE /CURRENTLY LOCATED IN VAL
VERDE/EDWARDS COUNTIES/ SHOULD REMAIN MORE ISOLATED/DISCRETE GIVEN
DEEP LAYER SHEAR VECTORS CROSSING THE SURFACE BOUNDARY.
MEANWHILE...AS THE COLD FRONT CONTINUES TO MOVE SSEWD AND OVERTAKE
THE DRY LINE THIS EVENING ACROSS CENTRAL/SOUTH CENTRAL TX...STORMS
WILL CONTINUE TO EVOLVE INTO QUASI-LINEAR STRUCTURE WITH ATTENDANT
DAMAGING WIND THREAT. COLD POOL ENHANCEMENT APPARENT WITH TSTM LINE
LOCATED IN CENTRAL/NERN PART OF WW 205 MAY ENHANCE WIND THREAT...
WITH CURRENT TRENDS SUGGESTING THIS LINE WILL REACH WILLIAMSON
COUNTY TO ERN BANDERA AND KENDALL COUNTIES BY 05Z.

NEW WW WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED FOR PARTS OF E THROUGH NE TX INTO THE
ARKLATEX REGION.

REGIONAL RADARS INDICATED AN ONGOING LINE OF STRONG TO SEVERE TSTMS
EXTENDING FROM NORTH CENTRAL TX /COOKE COUNTY/ SWWD ALONG THE
ADVANCING COLD FRONT TO BROWN COUNTY. ALTHOUGH THE AIR MASS IS NOT
AS UNSTABLE TO THE EAST OF WW 204...STRENGTHENING LLJ WILL CONTINUE
TO PROVIDE NWD MOISTURE ADVECTION WHICH MAY COMPENSATE FOR THE
WEAKER OVERALL INSTABILITY. THIS COMBINED WITH FORCING FOR ASCENT
ALONG THE FRONT AND AHEAD OF UPPER TROUGH MOVING INTO THE SRN PLAINS
ARE EXPECTED TO MAINTAIN TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE COLD FRONT
THROUGH THIS EVENING AS IT PROGRESSES ESEWD. ALTHOUGH A FEW
DISCRETE SUPERCELLS REMAIN POSSIBLE IN THE SHORT TERM ACROSS NRN TX
WHERE DEEP LAYER SHEAR VECTORS CONTINUE TO CROSS THE SURFACE

PERSISTENT/CLOSED CYCLONE OFFSHORE MID ATLANTIC REGION...WITH
RIDGING FROM NEW ENGLAND SWWD ACROSS CENTRAL/ERN GULF OF
MEXICO...AND TROUGHING FROM NRN PLAINS SSWWD ACROSS PORTIONS
N-CENTRAL/NWRN MEX. STRONG SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS EVIDENT IN MOISTURE
CHANNEL IMAGERY AND RAOB/PROFILER DATA OVER CENTRAL NEB...WRN KS AND
TX PANHANDLE. THIS FEATURE IS FCST TO MOVE EWD TO ERN PORTIONS
NEB/KS...WRN/CENTRAL OK AND NWRN/CENTRAL TX BY END OF
PERIOD...BECOMING MORE NEUTRALLY TILTED WITH EMBEDDED LOW OVER KS.

AT SFC...CYCLONE INITIALLY ANALYZED OVER E-CENTRAL KS IS FCST TO
LIFT SLOWLY NEWD ACROSS MKC AREA INTO NWRN MO THROUGH 18/12Z.
MEANWHILE...TRAILING COLD FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE EWD ACROSS ERN
PORTIONS KS/OK...AND SEWD OVER N-CENTRAL...CENTRAL AND SW TX.
DRYLINE -- INITIALLY ANALYZED FROM CONCHO VALLEY REGION SSWWD
THROUGH DRT AREA -- MAY RETREAT SOMEWHAT WWD ACROSS RIO GRANDE
VALLEY REGION BEFORE BEING OVERTAKEN BY FRONT LATE THIS EVENING.

...SRN PLAINS TO S-CENTRAL TX...
TSTMS ARE BACKBUILDING SWWD GENERALLY ALONG COLD FRONT -- EVEN W OF
DRYLINE AND N OF RIO GRANDE VALLEY...NW DRT. THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDES
A FEW SUPERCELLS...SUCH AS ONE WHICH HAS PRODUCED DAMAGING HAIL AT
MWL AND IS BEING ABSORBED INTO FRONTAL LINE AS IT HEADS TOWARD FTW
AND MID-CITIES AREAS OF METROPLEX. CONVECTIVE MODE IS MORE LINEAR
FARTHER N ACROSS OK...BOTH WITH FRONTAL AND PREFRONTAL BANDS OF
TSTMS. ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS POSSIBLE BEHIND SFC COLD
FRONT...WHICH MAINLY WOULD BE A MRGL HAIL THREAT. THESE TRENDS ARE
EXPECTED TO EXTEND INTO NRN/CENTRAL TX WITH TIME DURING NEXT FEW
HOURS...THOUGH EMBEDDED SUPERCELLS WILL REMAIN LIKELY PARTICULARLY S
OF RED RIVER. REF WWS 204-205 AND RELATED MESOSCALE DISCUSSIONS FOR
NEAR-TERM GUIDANCE ON SVR POTENTIAL.

POTENTIAL FOR AT LEAST BRIEFLY DISCRETE SUPERCELLULAR
STRUCTURES...AND ACCOMPANYING LARGE HAIL...WILL SHIFT SWD WITH
TIME...AS MORE LINEAR CONVECTIVE MODE BECOMES DOMINANT OVER
N-CENTRAL TX. STG CAPPING WILL BE OVERCOME BY LIFT INVOF FRONTAL
ZONE...WHILE FAVORABLE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AND DEEP-LAYER SHEAR
PERSIST -- E.G. EFFECTIVE SHEAR MAGNITUDES AROUND 50 KT. LINEAR
MODE SHOULD BECOME MORE PRONOUNCED WITH TIME IN THIS AREA AS
WELL...WITH SOME UNDERCUTTING BY COLD FRONT. ALTHOUGH A TORNADO OR
TWO CANNOT BE RULED OUT WITH ANY DISCRETE/PERSISTENT/SFC-BASED
SUPERCELLS...DOMINANT SVR THREATS WILL BE HAIL AND DAMAGING GUSTS AS
PRIMARY BAND OF CONVECTION SHIFTS SEWD ACROSS TX.

VALID 191200Z - 201200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
UPPER LOW IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE DRIFTING EWD/ENEWD ACROSS THE OH
VALLEY REGION WITH TIME...WHILE A SECOND/MUCH LARGER TROUGH EVOLVES
OVER THE WEST.

AT THE SURFACE...FRONT MOVING EWD ACROSS THE SERN U.S. IN
CONJUNCTION WITH THE ERN UPPER FEATURE IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN WITH
TIME...WHILE A MUCH STRONGER FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE WEST. BY THE
END OF THE PERIOD...SURFACE CYCLOGENESIS IS FORECAST OVER THE NRN
HIGH PLAINS...WITH AN INTENSIFYING LEE TROUGH EXTENDING SWD INTO W
TX. THOUGH A FAIRLY STRONG LOW-LEVEL JET IS ALSO EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP OVERNIGHT...LITTLE IF ANY DESTABILIZATION IS FORECAST.

ELSEWHERE...SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE ACROSS
THE SOUTHEAST AHEAD OF THE WEAKENING SURFACE SYSTEM. HOWEVER...IT
APPEARS THAT A LACK OF INSTABILITY ANTICIPATED ATTM SHOULD PRECLUDE
ANY APPRECIABLE SEVERE POTENTIAL.

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 203...

VALID 170626Z - 170800Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 203
CONTINUES.

ZONE OF STRONG LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC WARM ADVECTION...NEAR THE NOSE
OF A 50+ KT SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET...TO THE NORTHEAST OF A TEXAS
PANHANDLE SURFACE LOW...IS THE FOCUS FOR VIGOROUS ONGOING CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT. WITH LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE RETURN TO THE CENTRAL PLAINS
STILL LIMITED...IT SEEMS PROBABLE THAT DRIER/MORE STABLE STORM
RELATIVE INFLOW WILL TEND TO WEAKEN STORMS AS THEY DEVELOP
NORTHEASTWARD OUT OF CENTRAL KANSAS LATE TONIGHT...AIDED BY 30-40 KT
SOUTHWESTERLY MEAN ENVIRONMENTAL FLOW. HOWEVER... MODELS SUGGEST
LIFT WILL REMAIN SUPPORTIVE OF RENEWED STORM DEVELOPMENT ACROSS
SOUTHWESTERN THROUGH CENTRAL KANSAS...THROUGH AT LEAST
09-10Z...BEFORE FORCING ACROSS THIS REGION BEGINS TO WEAKEN AS THE
LOW-LEVEL JET GRADUALLY VEERS AND WEAKENS.

UNTIL THEN...MOST UNSTABLE CAPE OF 500-1000 J/KG IN THE PRESENCE OF
STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL REMAIN FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE
STORMS...INCLUDING SUPERCELLS. AND...DESPITE ELEVATED STORM
BASES...THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES...EVEN TO THE COOL SIDE OF SURFACE

..SYNOPSIS...
CLOSED LOW AT MID LEVELS -- INITIALLY OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS...WILL
SHIFT SLOWLY EWD WITH TIME INTO THE LOWER OH VALLEY. MEANWHILE...A
SECOND TROUGH IS FORECAST TO EXPAND/AMPLIFY OVER THE WESTERN CONUS.

AT THE SURFACE...LOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE CENTRAL U.S. CLOSED LOW IS
FORECAST TO SHIFT SLOWLY EWD FROM THE MO VALLEY INTO THE
MIDWEST/LOWER OH VALLEY THROUGH THE PERIOD. TRAILING COLD FRONT --
INITIALLY EXTENDING FROM WRN MO/WRN AR SSWWD ACROSS THE TX COAST --
WILL MOVE EWD ACROSS THE MID AND LOWER MS VALLEY REGION THROUGH THE
