MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1763
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0816 PM CDT TUE AUG 14 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...SRN OK...N CNTRL TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 579...

VALID 150116Z - 150215Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 579
CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...DMGG WINDS REMAIN POSSIBLE WITH ONGOING THUNDERSTORMS
ACROSS THE WW AREA...PARTICULARLY ACROSS THE SRN MOST
COUNTIES...WHERE THE WW HAS BEEN LOCALLY EXTENDED TO ACCOUNT FOR SWD
PROGRESSING STORMS.

DISCUSSION...00Z FWD SOUNDING APPEARS TO HAVE CAPTURED THE PRESTORM
ENVIRONMENT ACROSS N TX...WITH HIGH-BASED STORMS PREDOMINANTLY
ROOTED ABOVE 700 MB. DESPITE MARGINAL INSTABILITY...FORCING FOR
ASCENT IN ASSOCIATION WITH A PASSING SHORT WAVE ALOFT...AS WELL AS
ADDITIONAL STORMS GENERATING ALONG OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES SHOULD BE
SUFFICIENT FOR NEW GROWTH WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF SUBSEQUENT DMGG
WIND GUSTS AS EVAPORATIVE COOLING AND PRECIPITATION LOADING ENSUE.
TEMPERATURES INVOF THE DFW METRO HAVE BEEN SLOW TO COOL...AND WILL
LIKELY ALLOW DOWNBURST WINDS TO PENETRATE TO THE SURFACE FOR THE
NEXT FEW HOURS AMIDST VERY SLOW BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZATION.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS INVOF THE RED RIVER VALLEY OF N
TX/SRN OK...

AMENDED FOR NRN MT/NWRN ND SEE TEXT

...RED RIVER VALLEY AREA OF N TX/SRN OK...
WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED INVOF THE SURFACE STATIONARY
FRONT...WITHIN ENVIRONMENT FEATURING MODEST INSTABILITY AND A
DEEP/RELATIVELY DRY BOUNDARY LAYER. WHILE STRONGER FLOW ALOFT WILL
REMAIN N OF THE WARM SECTOR...SHEAR/CAPE COMBINATION REMAINS
SUFFICIENT -- IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DRY SUB-CLOUD LAYER -- TO
SUPPORT LOCALLY STRONG/DAMAGING WIND GUSTS ALONG WITH MARGINAL HAIL.
THREAT WILL CONTINUE OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS...SLOWLY DIMINISHING
WITH TIME AS THE BOUNDARY LAYER COOLS.

...MID-ATLANTIC AREA AND VICINITY...
MODEST SHEAR BUT MODERATE INSTABILITY PERSISTS ACROSS PARTS OF ERN
PA/VA AND VICINITY THIS EVENING...WHERE A LARGE CLUSTER OF
THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUES AHEAD OF A SLOWLY ADVANCING SHORT-WAVE
TROUGH. WHILE SEVERE THREAT SHOULD DIMINISH SLOWLY LATER THIS
EVENING IN CONJUNCTION WITH DIURNAL COOLING/STABILIZATION...THREAT
FOR LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL WILL CONTINUE FOR AT LEAST THE
NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS.

...NRN MT/NWRN ND...
A STRONG COLD FRONT -- AHEAD OF A DIGGING UPPER TROUGH -- IS
FORECAST TO SHIFT ACROSS THE NRN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION THIS
EVENING...AND THEN ACROSS THE NRN PLAINS OVERNIGHT. DESPITE MEAGER
INSTABILITY AHEAD OF THE FRONT...STRONG FLOW ALOFT ACCOMPANYING THE
UPPER SYSTEM AND STRENGTH OF FOCUSED ASCENT SUGGESTS POTENTIAL FOR
ISOLATED DAMAGING GUSTS THIS EVENING/OVERNIGHT NEAR ANY STRONGER
CONVECTIVE ELEMENTS.

SCATTERED MORNING CONVECTION IS OCCURRING OVER THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC
REGION IN ASSOCIATION WITH A SHORT WAVE TROUGH LIFTING NEWD FROM
CENTRAL NY INTO NRN VA. THIS ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE NEWD
THIS MORNING WITH VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWING A DECREASE IN CLOUD COVER
FROM SERN OH/WRN PA INTO WV IN THE WAKE OF THIS INITIAL CONVECTION.
THIS WILL PERMIT STRONGER DIABATIC HEATING AND DESTABILIZATION TO
SPREAD EWD THIS AFTERNOON...AND WHEN COUPLED WITH SURFACE DEW POINTS
GENERALLY IN THE 60S...WILL RESULT IN AN UNSTABLE ENVIRONMENT WITH
MLCAPE REACHING 1000-1500 J/KG.

ADDITIONAL STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BY THIS AFTERNOON FROM
PARTS OF ERN OH/PA/NRN MD SWWD INTO WV AND NRN/WRN VA AS LARGE SCALE
ASCENT IN ADVANCE OF AN UPSTREAM SHORT WAVE TROUGH APPROACHING THE
AREA FROM THE WEST OVERSPREADS THE COLD FRONT. WSWLY MID LEVEL FLOW
OF 25-30 KT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER SHEAR TO
PROMOTE MAINLY ORGANIZED MULTICELL STORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
STRONG/SEVERE WIND GUSTS AND HAIL AS THEY SPREAD EWD THROUGH THE
EVENING HOURS. THERE IS ALSO A THREAT FOR ISOLATED SUPERCELLS AND
ATTENDANT BRIEF TORNADO POTENTIAL OVER THE DELMARVA REGION WHERE
SELY LOW LEVEL WINDS WILL ENHANCE VERTICAL SHEAR.

FARTHER SOUTH...MORNING CONVECTION FROM ERN TN/EXTREME WRN NC INTO
ERN AL/WRN GA IS AHEAD OF A STRONGER SHORT WAVE TROUGH MOVING INTO
THE SERN STATES. THE NRN PART OF THE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN STEADILY
WEAKENING OVER THE LAST FEW HOURS BUT STORMS ARE PERSISTING IN A N/S
AXIS ENTERING WRN GA. WIDELY SCATTERED CONVECTION IS EXPECTED TO
INCREASE AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON AS SUSTAINED LARGE SCALE ASCENT
COUPLED WITH ZONES OF DIABATIC HEATING DIMINISH CIN. MID LEVEL 30
KT WESTERLY WINDS AND 20-30 KT DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL SUPPORT
MULTICELL STORM STRUCTURES WITH A THREAT FOR STRONG DOWNBURST WINDS
AND ISOLATED HAIL TO OCCUR. ACTIVITY SHOULD SPREAD EWD INTO THE
EVENING BEFORE WEAKENING AFTER SUNSET AS BOUNDARY LAYER
COOLING/STABILIZATION OCCURS.

...NERN NM/TX PANHANDLE REGION ESEWD ACROSS SWRN OK/N TX...
AFTERNOON CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT IS FORECAST ALONG THE
QUASI-STATIONARY FRONT EXTENDING ACROSS THIS AREA...AS DIURNAL
HEATING RESULTS IN MODEST DESTABILIZATION ATOP A DEEP MIXED LAYER.
WHILE STRONGER FLOW ALOFT SHOULD REMAIN N OF THE RED RIVER ON THE
COOL SIDE OF THE BOUNDARY...A FEW MULTICELL CLUSTERS WILL BE
POSSIBLE. THIS -- COMBINED WITH THE DEEP SUB-CLOUD LAYER ENHANCING
DOWNDRAFT POTENTIAL AND STEEP LAPSE RATES -- SUGGESTS
LOW-PROBABILITY THREAT FOR ISOLATED DAMAGING GUSTS AND HAIL INTO THE
EVENING HOURS.

...DISCUSSION...
00Z ECMWF/GEFS/UKMET ARE IN GENERAL CONSENSUS REGARDING THE
PERSISTENCE OF AN AMPLIFIED LARGE SCALE PATTERN THROUGH THE PERIOD.
WHILE AN UPPER RIDGE PERSISTS OVER THE WESTERN STATES...A LONGWAVE
TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST OVER THE EASTERN HALF OF THE CONUS
THROUGH THE WEEKEND. NO 30 PERCENT EQUIVALENT SEVERE
AREAS ARE CURRENTLY FORECAST GIVEN A COMBINATION OF MODEST
PREDICTABILITY /ESPECIALLY DAY 6 AND BEYOND/ AND MARGINAL /OR AT
LEAST UNCERTAIN/ MAGNITUDE.

FOR DAY 4/FRIDAY...AT LEAST SOME SEVERE RISK WILL LIKELY EXIST
ALONG/AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT...POTENTIALLY INCLUDING PORTIONS OF THE
NORTHEAST/MID-ATLANTIC STATES TO THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS/TN VALLEY.
AIDED BY MODERATELY STRONG CYCLONIC FLOW ALOFT ATTENDANT TO THE
UPPER TROUGH...SUFFICIENT VERTICAL SHEAR/BUOYANCY MAY COINCIDE AHEAD
OF THE COLD FRONT FOR SOME ORGANIZED SEVERE TSTMS IN THE
AFOREMENTIONED REGIONS.

THEREAFTER...AT LEAST SPORADIC/ISOLATED SEVERE TSTM POTENTIAL MAY
EXIST THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK /DAYS 5-7/ ALONG AND SOUTH
OF A FRONTAL ZONE FROM THE SOUTH-CENTRAL PLAINS/ARKLATEX TO THE
SOUTHEAST STATES.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0230 AM CDT TUE AUG 14 2012

VALID 161200Z - 171200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE MIDWEST/MIDDLE MS
RIVER VALLEY/OZARKS...

...SYNOPSIS...
AN AMPLIFIED LONGWAVE FLOW REGIME WILL PERSIST OVER THE CONUS INTO
THURSDAY. THE PATTERN WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED BY A DEEP/EXTENSIVE
LONGWAVE TROUGH CENTERED OVER EAST-CENTRAL CANADA AND THE GREAT
LAKES REGION...TO THE NORTH AND EAST OF A BROAD UPPER RIDGE OVER THE
WESTERN/SOUTHERN CONUS.

...MIDWEST/GREAT LAKES REGION AND MIDDLE MS VALLEY/OZARKS...
THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE AFOREMENTIONED LONGWAVE TROUGH IS EXPECTED
TO CONTINUE TO AMPLIFY/DEVELOP EASTWARD OVER THE GREAT LAKES REGION
AND MIDWEST ON THURSDAY. AN ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT...POTENTIALLY
AUGMENTED BY EARLY DAY PRECIPITATION/CLOUD COVER ACROSS THE UPPER MS
VALLEY AND WESTERN GREAT LAKES VICINITY...WILL MAKE A STEADY
EASTWARD PROGRESSION ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION...WITH A SLOWER/MORE
SOUTHEASTWARD MOVEMENT OF THE FRONT ACROSS THE OZARKS AND SOUTHERN
PLAINS.

IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT TSTMS WILL INCREASE/INTENSIFY THURSDAY
AFTERNOON ALONG OR /MORE SO/ AHEAD OF THE /EFFECTIVE/ COLD FRONT
WITHIN A RELATIVELY MOIST/MODERATELY UNSTABLE BOUNDARY LAYER.
CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE RELATIVELY STRONGEST
DESTABILIZATION WILL OCCUR THURSDAY AFTERNOON ACROSS THE OZARKS INTO
DOWNSTATE IL AND PERHAPS INDIANA...WITH AS MUCH AS 1500-2500 J/KG
MLCAPE POSSIBLE. THE STRONGEST FORCING FOR ASCENT/VERTICAL SHEAR
WILL TEND TO LAG THE COLD FRONT EXCEPT FOR THE GREAT LAKES REGION
WHERE THE EXTENT OF DIURNAL DESTABILIZATION IS MORE QUESTIONABLE
OWING TO EARLY DAY CLOUD COVER/PRECIPITATION UNCERTAINTIES AND LOWER
OVERALL THETA-E. EVEN REMOVED FROM THE STRONGER FORCING/VERTICAL
SHEAR...STRONGER/MORE CERTAIN DESTABILIZATION FARTHER SOUTHWEST INTO
THE MIDDLE MS VALLEY/OZARKS WILL ACCOUNT FOR ORGANIZED/SUSTAINED
SEVERE TSTM POTENTIAL THURSDAY AFTERNOON INTO MID-EVENING. DAMAGING
WINDS AND BOUTS OF SEVERE HAIL WILL BE THE PRIMARY HAZARDS. TSTMS
SHOULD CONTINUE TO SPREAD EAST-SOUTHEASTWARD THURSDAY NIGHT ACROSS
THE OH VALLEY/LOWER GREAT LAKES/MID-SOUTH...BUT WITH A DIMINISHING
SEVERE THREAT BY THE LATE EVENING/OVERNIGHT HOURS.

...SOUTHERN PLAINS/MID-SOUTH...
ALTHOUGH WELL-REMOVED FROM THE STRONGER WESTERLIES ALOFT OVER THE
MIDWEST...ISOLATED TO SCATTERED TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
ALONG/AHEAD OF THE SOUTHEASTWARD MOVING COLD FRONT ACROSS THE
REGION. A HOT/DEEPLY MIXED BOUNDARY LAYER WILL ACCOUNT FOR ISOLATED
DOWNBURST POTENTIAL THURSDAY AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING.

...SOUTHERN AZ...
MOISTURE SEEMS LIKELY TO STEADILY INCREASE INTO SOUTHERN AZ/LOWER CO
RIVER VALLEY BY THURSDAY...WITH A RESULTANT UPSWING IN TSTMS
PROBABLE ACROSS THE REGION. ESPECIALLY IF IT COINCIDES WITH A
MODESTLY INCREASING EASTERLY STEERING COMPONENT ON THE IMMEDIATE
PERIPHERY OF THE UPPER RIDGE...TSTMS MAY REACH THE SOUTHERN AZ
DESERT FLOOR WITH DOWNBURSTS AND STRONG/GUSTY WINDS POSSIBLE.

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 578...

VALID 140446Z - 140615Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 578
CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL REMAIN POSSIBLE NEXT
COUPLE HOURS AS STORMS MOVE SEWD THROUGH CNTRL MS. OVERALL THREAT IS
EXPECTED TO BECOME INCREASINGLY MARGINAL BY WW EXPIRATION TIME OF
06Z.

DISCUSSION...CLUSTER OF STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS CONTINUE PROPAGATING
SEWD THROUGH CNTRL MS ALONG ATTENDANT OUTFLOW BOUNDARY. MUCH OF THE
ACTIVITY IS BEHIND THE CONVECTIVE OUTFLOW WITH THE EXCEPTION OF
LEADING STORM MOVING INTO LEAKE COUNTY. THIS STORM IS A LITTLE
BETTER ORGANIZED WITH SOME SUPERCELL CHARACTERISTICS AND APPEARS TO
HAVE INTERCEPTED THE OLD RESIDUAL OUTFLOW BOUNDARY. WHILE A BRIEF
TORNADO CANNOT BE RULED OUT...THE STABILIZING SFC LAYER AND TENDENCY
FOR THE STORMS TO SHIFT SOUTH OF THE STRONGER FLOW ALOFT SHOULD
LIMIT THE PRIMARY THREAT TO ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL THROUGH
06Z.
