DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0745 PM CDT MON SEP 14 2009

VALID 150100Z - 151200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...UT...

TSTMS HAVE WEAKENED OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS DUE TO GRADUAL
STABILIZATION OF AIR MASS. FORCING FOR ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH SHORT
WAVE TROUGH ACTING ON RESIDUAL STEEP LAPSE RATES MAY SUSTAIN A FEW
STRONG STORMS THIS EVENING WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR GUSTY WINDS AND
SOME HAIL. HOWEVER...THREAT FOR MORE ORGANIZED SEVERE WEATHER
APPEARS TO HAVE DIMINISHED.

...CNTRL GULF COAST...

SURFACE LOW CURRENTLY W OF POE IS FORECAST TO MOVE LITTLE TONIGHT
WHILE ASSOCIATED SURFACE BOUNDARY REMAINS QUASI-STATIONARY...
EXTENDING NNEWD THROUGH ERN AR INTO THE MO BOOTHEEL. VORTICITY LOBE
ROTATING AROUND PARENT UPPER SYSTEM HAS CONTRIBUTED TO RECENT
INTENSIFICATION OF STORMS OVER SRN AND CNTRL PARTS OF MS. 00Z JAN
SOUNDING IS QUITE REPRESENTATIVE OF AMBIENT THERMODYNAMIC AND
KINEMATIC ENVIRONMENT...FEATURING MLCAPE OF AROUND 2000 J/KG AND 30
KT OF DEEP-LAYER SHEAR.

GIVEN THE MOIST...UNCAPPED AIR MASS...SAMPLED WIND PROFILE IS
MARGINALLY SUFFICIENT FOR WEAK SUPERCELL STRUCTURES WHICH HAVE BEEN
OBSERVED OVER THE PAST HOUR. AS SUCH...A LOW PROBABILITY THREAT FOR
A BRIEF TORNADO OR STRONG WIND GUST WILL EXIST OVERNIGHT.
HOWEVER...THE RATHER WEAK LOW-LEVEL SHEAR SHOULD LIMIT GREATER
SUPERCELL/TORNADO POTENTIAL.

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 741...

VALID 142302Z - 150000Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 741
CONTINUES.

SVR TSTM WATCH 741 IS SET TO EXPIRE AT 00Z. LOCAL WFO EXTENSION OF
THE WW MAY BE POSSIBLE.

WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS A POTENT PV-ANOMALY ROTATING NEWD ACROSS
THE SALT FLATS/DESERTS OF NWRN UT AND IS AIDING IN THE RECENT
INTENSIFICATION OF TSTMS OVER THE GREAT SALT LAKE. THIS NARROW LINE
OF STRONG CONVECTION WILL TRANSLATE ENE ACROSS THE I-15 CORRIDOR AND
INTO THE NRN WASATCH FRONT/MOUNTAINS AND THE CACHE VLY THROUGH 00Z.
SOME WEAKENING IS LIKELY AS THE ACTIVITY BECOMES REMOVED FROM THE
SLIGHTLY STRONGER BUOYANCY NOTED INVOF THE GREAT SALT LAKE.
BUT...STRONG/SVR WINDS COULD OCCUR.

MEANWHILE...WARM CONVEYOR ASSOCD WITH THE NV UPR SYSTEM CONTINUES TO
SPREAD SLOWLY EWD ACROSS THE ERN UINTA BASIN...SAN RAFAEL SWELL AND
CNTRL MOUNTAINS. EMBEDDED WITHIN THIS ENHANCED SLY MID-LVL FLOW
WERE SEVERAL SUSTAINED ROTATING CELLS CAPABLE OF LARGE HAIL AND DMGG
WIND GUSTS. THIS ACTIVITY WILL PROBABLY WEAKEN GRADUALLY THROUGH
EARLY THIS EVE BEFORE REACHING THE CO/WY BORDERS AS THE PRIMARY
FORCING FOR ASCENT ROTATES NWD TOWARD WRN WY/ERN ID.

SEVERE TSTM WATCH 741 CONTINUES UNTIL 00Z...WITH A PERSISTENT RISK
OF SEVERE WINDS/HAIL ACROSS PORTIONS OF UT.

MULTIPLE NORTH-SOUTH ORIENTED CONVECTIVE CLUSTERS CONTINUE TO

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0243 PM CDT MON SEP 14 2009

VALID 142000Z - 151200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER MUCH OF UT...

...UT...

THE CURRENT FORECAST APPEARS ON TRACK. STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS ARE
DEVELOPING ACROSS UT WITHIN ZONE OF DEEP LIFT AND UPPER DIVERGENCE
ATTENDING THE EWD MOVING SHORTWAVE TROUGH. COOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT
WITH -12 TO -13C AT 500 MB...STEEP LAPSE RATES...AND DEEPLY MIXED
BOUNDARY LAYERS ARE PROMOTING A RISK FOR ISOLATED LARGE HAIL AND
STRONG TO DAMAGING WIND GUSTS. SEVERE THREAT SHOULD DIMINISH EARLY
THIS EVENING AS THE BOUNDARY LAYER BEGINS TO STABILIZE.

...GULF COASTAL STATES...

EARLY THIS EVENING A FRONTAL BOUNDARY EXTENDS FROM THE NRN GULF OF
MEXICO NWWD TO A WEAK SURFACE LOW OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY. LARGE
CLUSTER OF STORMS CONTINUE WITHIN PLUME OF DEEP SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE
FROM THE FL PANHANDLE NWD THROUGH AL. FARTHER WEST MORE ISOLATED
DEVELOPMENT IS OCCURING WITHIN DRY SLOT AND ZONE OF POSSIBLE UPPER
LEVEL SUBSIDENCE. IN BOTH THESE REGIONS CONSIDERABLE LOW LEVEL
VEERING EXISTS IN VICINITY OF THE FRONT...BUT LOW LEVEL AND DEEP

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1221 PM CDT MON SEP 14 2009

VALID 151200Z - 161200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

BLOCKING PATTERN WILL PERSIST TUESDAY WITH A MEAN RIDGE FLANKED BY
UPPER TROUGHS OVER THE ERN PACIFIC AND SERN CANADA. UNDERCUTTING THE
RIDGE WILL BE SEVERAL SMALLER SCALE UPPER LOWS. THE UPPER LOW NOW
APPROACHING THE GREAT BASIN WILL CLOSE OFF AND STALL OVER UT AS IT
BECOMES DETACHED FROM BELT OF STRONGER WLYS. WEAKER CLOSED UPPER LOW
WILL PERSIST OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY AREA.

...UT...

STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL DEVELOP WHERE SUFFICIENT DIABATIC HEATING
OCCURS BENEATH THE COLD MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES ASSOCIATED WITH UPPER
LOW CIRCULATION. OUTSIDE OF ANY ONGOING THUNDERSTORMS AND
CLOUDS...DIABATIC WARMING OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL RESULT IN
MARGINAL INSTABILITY WITH MLCAPE AOB 500 J/KG. MOST LIKELY ZONE OF
DESTABILIZATION WILL BE OVER CNTRL/SRN UT NEAR DRY SLOT REGION ALONG
SRN PERIPHERY OF UPPER TROUGH. SCATTERED STORMS WILL LIKELY
REDEVELOP DURING THE AFTERNOON. STEEP LAPSE RATES AND COLD AIR ALOFT
COULD SUPPORT A THREAT FOR HAIL. ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS COULD
ALSO ACCOMPANY THE STRONGER ACTIVITY. HOWEVER...THE THERMODYNAMIC
ENVIRONMENT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR MORE THAN 5%
SEVERE PROBABILITIES.

...GULF COASTAL REGION...

UPPER LOW OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY IS FORECAST TO MOVE LITTLE THIS
PERIOD. FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL PERSIST ALONG THE GULF COASTAL REGION
AND EXTEND WWD TO A WEAK SURFACE LOW OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY. WV
IMAGERY CURRENTLY INDICATES THAT DRY AIR ALOFT IS BEING ENTRAINED
ALONG SRN PERIPHERY OF UPPER LOW OVER THE NWRN GULF...AND THIS WILL
IMPROVE THE CHANCE FOR BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZATION AS LOW CLOUDS
MIX OUT. HOWEVER...INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN MARGINAL DUE TO WARM AIR
ALOFT AND WEAK LAPSE RATES. FORECAST WIND PROFILES SHOW CONSIDERABLE
VEERING IN THE LOWEST 1 KM IN VICINITY OF THE FRONT. HOWEVER...ONLY
WEAK WIND SPEEDS ASSOCIATED WITH UPPER LOW CIRCULATION WILL LIMIT
HODOGRAPH SIZE. THIS ALONG WITH THE MARGINAL THERMODYNAMIC
ENVIRONMENT SUGGEST ANY SEVERE THREAT IN THIS REGION SHOULD REMAIN
LIMITED.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1221 AM CDT MON SEP 14 2009

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

MOBILE SHORT WAVE TROUGH CURRENTLY MOVING ONTO THE CA COAST WILL
PROGRESS EWD THROUGH THE SIERRA NEVADA BEFORE DECELERATING AND
EVOLVING INTO A CLOSED CIRCULATION OVER THE GREAT BASIN. AS THIS
OCCURS...QUASI-STATIONARY DEEP-LAYER CYCLONE OVER TX WILL BEGIN TO
SLOWLY DRIFT EWD/NEWD.

...CNTRL GULF STATES...

SYNOPTIC PATTERN SIMILAR TO THAT OF THIS PAST WEEKEND WILL PERSIST
THROUGH THE PERIOD...FEATURING THE SLOW EWD MOVEMENT OF A SURFACE
LOW FROM E TX INTO LA. ASSOCIATED WARM FRONT WILL CONCURRENTLY
PIVOT NWWD THROUGH NRN PARTS OF MS/AL AND WRN TN TO VICINITY OF THE
MS RIVER. WARM SECTOR AIR MASS WILL CONTINUE TO BE CHARACTERIZED BY
BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN THE LOW/MID 70S AND PW VALUES AOA 2
INCHES. MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL REMAIN WEAK...BUT POCKETS OF
STRONGER HEATING COUPLED WITH THE ABUNDANT MOISTURE WILL CONTRIBUTE
TO MODERATE AFTERNOON INSTABILITY WITH MLCAPE OF 1000-2000 J/KG.

VORTICITY MAXIMA ROTATING AROUND PARENT UPPER LOW WILL LIKELY FOSTER
NUMEROUS DIURNAL TSTMS WITHIN SYSTEM WARM SECTOR...SOME OF WHICH MAY
BRIEFLY APPROACH SEVERE LEVELS. VERTICAL SHEAR /BOTH IN THE LOW
LEVELS AND THROUGH A DEEP LAYER/ WILL REMAIN SOMEWHAT MARGINAL FOR
STORM ORGANIZATION/ROTATION. NONETHELESS...A LOW PROBABILITY THREAT
FOR A BRIEF TORNADO AND/OR STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL EXIST WITH ANY
LONGER-LIVED STORMS.

...GREAT BASIN...

AIR MASS IS NOT FORECAST TO BE PARTICULARLY MOIST /PW VALUES AROUND
.75 INCH/...BUT THE PRESENCE OF STEEP LOW TO MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES
WILL LARGELY CONTRIBUTE TO WEAK CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY LATER TODAY.
TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE THIS AFTERNOON AS FORCING
FOR ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH SHORT WAVE TROUGH ACTS ON DESTABILIZING
ENVIRONMENT. A FEW OF THE STRONGER STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF SOME
HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS...THOUGH THE WEAK CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY SHOULD
LIMIT A MORE ORGANIZED SEVERE THREAT.
