VALID 010246Z - 010345Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
638...639...CONTINUES.

SEVERE THREAT HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY MARGINAL AS STORMS MOVE TOWARD
THE ERN BORDERS OF WW 638 AND 639. ANOTHER WW EAST OF CURRENT
WATCHES IS NOT ANTICIPATED AS PRIMARY THREAT APPEARS TO HAVE
TRANSITIONED TO HEAVY RAIN.

LINE OF STORMS FROM SWRN WI THROUGH E-CNTRL IA...NWRN MO AND NERN KS
CONTINUES SEWD AT AROUND 20-25 KT. OVERALL TREND HAS BEEN FOR STORMS
WITHIN THE LINE TO WEAKEN AND BECOME LESS ORGANIZED. THIS TREND
SHOULD CONTINUE AS STORMS MOVE SEWD INTO AN INCREASINGLY MARGINAL
THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT WHERE VERTICAL SHEAR IS ALSO WEAKER. WHILE
SOME THREAT FOR ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS CANNOT BE RULED
OUT...COVERAGE OF ANY FUTURE SEVERE EVENTS IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN TOO
SPARSE TO WARRANT ANOTHER WW ISSUANCE.

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN NEB/FAR NWRN MO/WRN AND NRN IA/

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 312026Z - 312100Z

WW MAY BE NEEDED SOON ACROSS SERN NEB/FAR NWRN MO INTO WRN AND NRN
IA.

EARLY AFTERNOON SURFACE ANALYSES SHOWED A COLD FRONT MOVING EWD
THROUGH THE UPPER MS AND MID MO RIVER VALLEYS. SURFACE HEATING
WITHIN THE MOIST AIR MASS AHEAD OF THIS FRONT AND BENEATH 7 C/KM
MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES HAS RESULTED IN MODERATE INSTABILITY /MLCAPE
2000-3500 J PER KG/. 19Z OMA SOUNDING SHOWED A CAP REMAINING AROUND
750 MB...THOUGH IT HAD LIFTED/WEAKENED SINCE 12Z. MODIFIED SOUNDING
WITH SURFACE TEMPERATURES IN THE LOWER 90S SUGGESTS THE CAP WILL BE
ELIMINATED FOR SURFACE BASED TSTM DEVELOPMENT. 20Z OBSERVATIONS
INDICATED TEMPERATURES OVER SERN NEB/SWRN IA HAVE REACHED THE
CONVECTIVE TEMPERATURE WITH STRONGER REFLECTIVITY OVER BURT COUNTY
NEB MAY BE SUGGESTIVE OF THE TREND FOR ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT THIS
AFTERNOON AS THE FRONT ENCOUNTERS THE STRONGER INSTABILITY.

TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR MORE ROBUST TSTM DEVELOPMENT AND THE
NEED FOR A WATCH...GIVEN THE AVAILABLE INSTABILITY AND EFFECTIVE
BULK SHEAR /40-50 KT/ WHICH WOULD SUPPORT SUPERCELLS WITH A THREAT
FOR HAIL AND STRONGER WIND GUSTS.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 312000Z - 011200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE CENTRAL PLAINS TO THE
UPPER MS VALLEY...

MINOR CHANGES HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE CNTRL HIGH PLAINS...NAMELY
THE UPSLOPE REGIONS OF NERN CO INTO NWRN KS. HAVE OPTED TO LOWER
SEVERE PROBABILITIES ACROSS THIS REGION WHERE MUCH DRIER BOUNDARY
LAYER AIRMASS HAS REPLACED EARLIER 50S SFC DEW POINTS. WITH
ADDITIONAL MIXING IT APPEARS THE THREAT FOR ROBUST UPDRAFTS CAPABLE
OF PRODUCING SEVERE WINDS/HAIL IS TOO MEAGER TO WARRANT PROBS.

FARTHER EAST ACROSS ERN NEB/IA/SRN MN...EXTENSIVE LOW CLOUDS HAVE
PRECLUDED SIGNIFICANT BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING ACROSS THIS REGION.
LATEST DIAGNOSTIC DATA DOES SUGGEST A NARROW WEDGE OF STEEPER LAPSE
RATES HAVE DEVELOPED FROM KS INTO EXTREME SWRN IA. THIS ZONE OF
INCREASED INSTABILITY SHOULD EVENTUALLY FEED STRENGTHENING UPDRAFTS
ACROSS THE WARM SECTOR. UNTIL THEN...WEAK FRONTAL ASCENT/WARM
ADVECTION HAS AIDED RECENT THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT OVER NRN IA.
THIS ACTIVITY MAY STRUGGLE FOR A FEW HOURS BEFORE UPDRAFTS COUPLE
WITH HIGHER INSTABILITY FEED FROM THE SWRN HEAT SOURCE.
OTHERWISE...OUTLOOK WILL ONLY BE ADJUSTED TO ACCOUNT FOR LATEST
DIURNAL AND CONVECTIVE TRENDS.

..DARROW.. 08/31/2010

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1114 AM CDT TUE AUG 31 2010/

...CENTRAL PLAINS TO UPPER MS VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...
WITH STRONG SYSTEM ROTATING NEWD ACROSS MANITOBA/ONTARIO THE LARGE
SCALE TROUGH FROM NRN ROCKIES EWD INTO THE PLAINS IS LOSING
AMPLITUDE. WHILE COLD FRONT CONTINUES EWD ACROSS UPPER MS
VALLEY...THE TRAILING PORTION WILL MOVE MORE SLOWLY SEWD ACROSS SRN
MN INTO ERN NEB THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING.

AXIS OF HIGH PWAT AROUND 2 INCHES EXTENDS FROM MO NNEWD ACROSS IA
INTO WI WHERE CURRENT ELEVATED CONVECTION IS OCCURRING. AS FRONT
ENCOUNTERS THIS MOIST PLUME WITH STRONG HEATING...MLCAPES WILL CLIMB
RAPIDLY THIS AFTERNOON AHEAD OF THE FRONT FROM WRN IA SWWD INTO SERN
NEB/NRN KS.

DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL BE MARGINAL IN SUPPORT OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
AS PRIMARY WESTERLIES REMAIN GENERALLY N OF MOST FAVORABLE
THERMODYNAMICS AND FRONTAL CONVERGENCE. HOWEVER GIVEN THE MLCAPES
AOA 3000 J/KG STILL EXPECT A BROAD WINDOW FROM MID AFTERNOON UNTIL
EVENING WHEN INTENSE MULTICELL/ISOLATED SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT SHOULD
OCCUR ONCE HEATING DISSIPATES THE CINH.

DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE THE PRIMARY CONCERN...HOWEVER SUFFICIENT LOW
LEVEL VEERING SHEAR PROFILES COUPLED WITH THE INSTABILITY SUPPORT A
FEW SUPERCELLS SERN NEB INTO IA THRU THE EARLY EVENING ALONG WITH A
BRIEF TORNADO AND LARGE HAIL THREAT.

...CNTRL HI PLNS LATE THIS AFTN INTO TONIGHT...
WEAK...MARGINALLY MOIST POST-FRONTAL UPSLOPE FLOW MAY FOSTER THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A FEW HIGH BASED TSTMS ALONG THE NRN CO FRONT RANGE
AND/OR OVER THE ADJACENT HI PLNS BY EARLY EVE. AS STORMS
MOVE/DEVELOP EWD ALONG/N OF THE STALLING FRONT...HIGHLY
SHEARED/STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT ON SRN FRINGE OF THE WLYS MAY
YIELD A FEW STORMS CAPABLE OF MARGINALLY SVR HAIL/GUSTY WINDS.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1218 PM CDT TUE AUG 31 2010

VALID 011200Z - 021200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL
PLAINS...

...NORTHERN AND CENTRAL PLAINS...

A STRONG MID LEVEL SPEED MAX IS EXPECTED TO DIG SEWD ACROSS THE NRN
ROCKIES INTO WY LATE IN THE PERIOD FORCING A PRONOUNCED REGION OF
FOCUSED ASCENT TO OVERSPREAD THE DAKOTAS INTO NRN NEB WITHIN A
REGION OF UPPER DIFFLUENCE. THIS FEATURE WILL ALSO MAINTAIN THE
DOWNSTREAM TROPICAL PLUME FROM THE SRN PLAINS...NEWD INTO THE MID MS
VALLEY WHERE PWAT VALUES ARE IN EXCESS OF 2 INCHES.

THE AFOREMENTIONED TROPICAL PLUME WILL LIKELY CONTRIBUTE TO
OFF-AND-ON SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WITHIN A REGION OF
WEAK WARM ADVECTION/LAPSE RATES THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD. LATEST WV
IMAGERY SUGGESTS EVEN A FEW WEAK DISTURBANCES MAY EJECT NEWD ALONG
THIS PLUME OF DEEPER MOISTURE...POSSIBLY ENHANCING CONVECTION AT
TIMES. FOR THIS REASON DO NOT ANTICIPATE SIGNIFICANT INSTABILITY
EXCEPT POSSIBLY NEAR THE DRYLINE OVER THE TX PANHANDLE AND WRN OK.
THIS REGION COULD EXPERIENCE A FEW STRONG THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING GUSTY WINDS AND HAIL.

MORE SIGNIFICANT CONVECTION IS ANTICIPATED ACROSS THE NRN/CNTRL
PLAINS LATER IN THE DAY AS STEEP LAPSE RATES DEVELOP OVER THE HIGH
PLAINS OF THE DAKOTAS INTO THE NEB PANHANDLE. STRONG SFC HEATING
WILL ENSURE SFC PARCELS REACH THEIR LFC ALONG A SHARPENING N-S WIND
SHIFT THAT WILL SERVE TO FOCUS THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT BY 20Z.
WITH COOLING MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES - HEIGHT FALLS AND INCREASING
VERTICAL SHEAR - FORECAST SOUNDINGS FAVOR SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT.
LARGE HAIL SHOULD BE MORE COMMON WITH THESE STORMS THAN ACTIVITY
OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS GIVEN THE COOLING PROFILES ALOFT.
ADDITIONALLY...LARGE SCALE FORCING ALONG/AHEAD OF ADVANCING COLD
FRONT SHOULD MAINTAIN MULTIPLE THUNDERSTORM CLUSTERS WELL INTO THE
OVERNIGHT HOURS.

VALID 311300Z - 011200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM PARTS OF THE CNTRL PLNS TO
THE UPR MS VLY...

...SYNOPSIS...
AS LEAD SHORTWAVE IMPULSE ASSOCIATED WRN STATES TROUGH CONTINUES NE
INTO ONT THROUGH THE DAY...LARGER SCALE WRN STATES TROUGH WILL
DEAMPLIFY SOMEWHAT. THE NEXT DISTURBANCE IN THE TROUGH...NOW OVER
ERN ID/UT...SHOULD SHEAR NE ACROSS THE DAKOTAS/NRN MN LATER
TODAY/TONIGHT...BEFORE REACHING CNTRL ONT EARLY WED.

AT THE SFC...NRN PART OF COLD FRONT ATTENDANT TO LEAD SHORTWAVE
IMPULSE SHOULD MOVE STEADILY E/SE ACROSS THE UPR MS VLY/UPR GRT
LKS...WHILE THE SRN PART SETTLES MORE SLOWLY S ACROSS THE CNTRL
PLNS. THIS BOUNDARY WILL SERVE AS THE MAIN FOCUS FOR TSTMS THROUGH
THE PERIOD.

...CNTRL PLNS TO UPR MS VLY TODAY/TONIGHT...
PRE-FRONTAL ELEVATED TSTMS NOW PRESENT FROM NRN MO/IA NNE INTO
MN/WRN WI SHOULD MOVE/DEVELOP GENERALLY NEWD THROUGH EARLY
AFTN...WITH LITTLE CHANGE IN INTENSITY EXPECTED AS LEAD UPR IMPULSE
MOVES FARTHER NE INTO CANADA. CLOUDS AND OUTFLOW FROM THIS ACTIVITY
WILL SOMEWHAT DIMINISH LOW LVL DESTABILIZATION FARTHER W ALONG
AFOREMENTIONED COLD FRONT.

NEVERTHELESS...COMBINATION OF EVEN MODERATE SFC HEATING WITH ASCENT
PROVIDED BY GLANCING INFLUENCE OF UPSTREAM DISTURBANCE THAT WILL BE
CROSSING THE NRN PLNS SHOULD SUPPORT NEW STORM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE
FRONT OVER FAR WRN WI...SRN MN...AND NRN IA BY MID AFTN. A BIT
LATER...DEVELOPMENT SHOULD OCCUR FARTHER SW ALONG THE BOUNDARY INTO
ERN NEB/NRN KS.

30-40 KT DEEP SWLY SHEAR ORIENTED ROUGHLY PARALLEL TO LOW LVL
FORCING...SBCAPE OF 2500-3000 J/KG...AND PW AOA 1.75 INCHES SHOULD
PROVE FAVORABLE FOR STRONG MULTICELL CLUSTERS...AND A FEW
SUPERCELLS...MAINLY DURING THE EARLIER STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT. DMGG
WIND SHOULD BE THE MAIN SVR THREAT. HOWEVER...A CONDITIONAL RISK
FOR HAIL AND TORNADOES COULD DEVELOP WITH ANY LONGER-LIVED STORMS
THAT AVOID EARLY MERGING... ESPECIALLY OVER THE WRN/CNTRL/NRN
IA...SE NEB...FAR NRN KS...AND NW MO.

THE STORMS COLLECTIVELY SHOULD GENERATE A FAIRLY EXTENSIVE COLD POOL
BY EARLY/MID EVE. THIS SHOULD FAVOR PROPAGATION OF STORMS AHEAD OF
THE FRONT...WITH A DIMINISHING THREAT FOR SVR AS THE ACTIVITY BUILDS
S/SE ACROSS KS...NRN MO AND NRN/WRN IL THROUGH EARLY WED.

...CNTRL HI PLNS LATE THIS AFTN INTO TONIGHT...
WEAK...INCREASINGLY MOIST POST-FRONTAL UPSLOPE FLOW MAY FOSTER THE
DEVELOPMENT OF SCTD TSTMS ALONG THE NRN CO FRONT RANGE AND/OR OVER
THE ADJACENT HI PLNS BY EARLY EVE. AS STORMS MOVE/DEVELOP EWD
ALONG/N OF THE STALLING FRONT...HIGHLY SHEARED/STEEP LAPSE RATE
ENVIRONMENT ON SRN FRINGE OF THE WLYS MAY YIELD A FEW STORMS CAPABLE
OF SVR HAIL/GUSTY WINDS. THESE MAY ORGANIZE INTO A SMALL CLUSTER OR
TWO THAT CONTINUES E INTO SRN NEB/NRN KS LATER TONIGHT.

...NRN ME TODAY...
SATELLITE SUGGESTS PRESENCE OF SEVERAL WEAK DISTURBANCES MOVING ESE
ACROSS S CNTRL QUEBEC. THESE FEATURES SHOULD CONTINUE ESE INTO NRN
NEW ENGLAND LATER TODAY WITHIN BAND OF MODEST WNWLY UPR LVL FLOW.
THEY MAY ENHANCE THE POTENTIAL FOR ISOLD AFTN TSTMS OVER NRN/ERN
ME...NOT FAR FROM STALLED FRONT IN NB. RELATIVELY WARM MID LVL
TEMPERATURES...AND WEAK FORCING FOR ASCENT/SHEAR ...SUGGEST THAT ANY
SVR THREAT WILL BE LIMITED.

...POTENTIAL TOO LOW TO DELINEATE A REGIONAL SEVERE THREAT AREA...

HURRICANE EARL APPEARS MOST LIKELY TO ACCELERATE NORTHEASTWARD JUST
OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST LATE THIS WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND... AHEAD OF A
SIGNIFICANT UPPER TROUGH...WHICH MAY AMPLIFY FURTHER AS IT
PROGRESSES ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES/UPPER OHIO VALLEY INTO THE
ATLANTIC SEABOARD. SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL ALONG AN ASSOCIATED
COLD FRONT PROBABLY WILL BE MITIGATED BY THE CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THE
HURRICANE...AND DRYING IN THE WAKE OF BOTH FEATURES IS EXPECTED TO
MINIMIZE THE RISK FOR SUBSTANTIVE DESTABILIZATION ACROSS MOST AREAS
EAST OF THE ROCKIES THROUGH MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF THE LABOR DAY
WEEKEND. HOWEVER...IT IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION THAT RELATIVELY
MINOR OR LOCALIZED SEVERE WEATHER THREATS COULD DEVELOP LATE IN THE
WEEKEND THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK IN RESPONSE TO MONSOONAL MOISTURE
RETURN...ACROSS PARTS OF THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST AND
ROCKIES...PERHAPS EASTWARD THROUGH THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND UPPER

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 021200Z - 031200Z

...SYNOPSIS...
AS HURRICANE EARL TRACKS ACROSS THE WESTERN ATLANTIC TOWARD THE
SOUTHERN MID ATLANTIC COASTAL VICINITY THURSDAY...MODELS ARE
SUGGESTIVE OF INCREASING AMPLIFICATION WITHIN AN INITIALLY ZONAL
STRONGER BELT OF WESTERLIES EXTENDING ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIER OF
THE U.S. AND SOUTHERN CANADA. THIS INCLUDES A POSSIBLE BUILDING
RIDGE ACROSS THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST INTO THE LEE OF THE CANADIAN
ROCKIES...AND A DIGGING TROUGH ACROSS THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
AND GREAT LAKES REGION. BUT DIFFERENCES PERSIST AMONG THE VARIOUS
MODELS CONCERNING THESE DEVELOPMENTS AND ASSOCIATED LOW-LEVEL
RESPONSE. AND THIS IS CONTRIBUTING TO UNCERTAIN CONVECTIVE
POTENTIAL FOR THIS PERIOD...PARTICULARLY NEAR A DEVELOPING SURFACE
CYCLONE ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST...AND SOUTHWARD ALONG AND AHEAD OF
AN ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT ADVANCING THROUGH THE PLAINS AND
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.

...SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS INTO THE GREAT LAKES...
GIVEN THE SIZABLE DIFFERENCES AMONG THE MODELS CONCERNING THE
EVOLUTION OF THE UPPER TROUGH AND ASSOCIATED LOW/MID-LEVEL
CYCLONE...UNCERTAINTIES ARE STILL TOO LARGE TO CONFIDENTLY OUTLOOK A
CATEGORICAL SEVERE RISK AREA AT THE PRESENT TIME. BUT THE WARM
SECTOR/PRE-FRONTAL ENVIRONMENT ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION IS EXPECTED
TO REMAIN MOIST...AND COULD BECOME EITHER FAVORABLY SHEARED OR
SUFFICIENTLY UNSTABLE TO SUPPORT AT LEAST LOW SEVERE PROBABILITIES.

ALTHOUGH MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES MAY NOT BE PARTICULARLY STEEP BY
EARLY THURSDAY...GUIDANCE IS SUGGESTIVE THAT A MID-LEVEL DRY SLOT
MAY ALLOW SUFFICIENT HEATING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AT LEAST A
NARROW PRE-FRONTAL CORRIDOR OF MODERATELY LARGE CAPE /IN EXCESS OF
2000 J PER KG/. THIS IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE THE MAIN FOCUS FOR ANY
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT...WHICH COULD INCLUDE
SUPERCELLS...PARTICULARLY IF THIS DESTABILIZATION CAN OCCUR AS FAR
NORTHEAST AS PARTS OF EASTERN IOWA AND NORTHERN ILLINOIS INTO
WISCONSIN AND MICHIGAN.

AREAS AFFECTED...SRN AND CNTRL MN...SE SD...FAR NW IA

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 637...

VALID 310652Z - 310815Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 637 CONTINUES.

AN ISOLATED THREAT FOR TORNADOES AND WIND DAMAGE IS EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE ACROSS WW 637 THROUGH DAYBREAK. THE THREAT SHOULD GRADUALLY
MOVE EWD ACROSS SW MN...FAR SE SD INTO NW IA OVER THE NEXT 1 TO 3
HOURS.

A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS CURRENTLY FROM JUST WEST OF ST CLOUD MN SWWD
TO NEAR O'NEILL NEB IS LOCATED AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT AND NEAR THE
AXIS OF A SHORTWAVE TROUGH EVIDENT ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY. OBJECTIVE
ANALYSIS IS SHOWING MODERATE INSTABILITY AHEAD OF THE LINE WITH
MLCAPE VALUES ESTIMATED IN THE 1000 TO 1500 J/KG RANGE. THE
INSTABILITY...LARGE-SCALE ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH THE TROUGH AND LIFT
ASSOCIATED WITH A 50 TO 65 KT LOW-LEVEL JET SHOULD HELP MAINTAIN THE
LINE EWD THROUGH MUCH OF THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. REGIONAL WSR-88D
VWPS AHEAD OF THE LINE IN NEB...IA AND MN SHOW VERY STRONG SPEED
SHEAR IN THE 0-1 KM LAYER ALONG WITH SOME DIRECTIONAL SHEAR
SUGGESTING THE ENVIRONMENT WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT AN ISOLATED
TORNADO THREAT MAINLY WITH ROTATING CELL ELEMENTS WITHIN THE LINE.
BOWING LINE-SEGMENTS MAY ALSO PRODUCE ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

VALID 311200Z - 011200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE UPPER MS VALLEY TO
THE CENTRAL PLAINS...

...SYNOPSIS...
THE LARGE SCALE FLOW PATTERN WILL DEAMPLIFY TO A DEGREE/TREND MORE
PROGRESSIVE OVER THE CONUS THROUGH THE PERIOD. THIS WILL BE
HIGHLIGHTED BY THE NORTHEASTWARD EJECTION/ADVANCEMENT OF THE NEXT
PORTION OF A CURRENT WESTERN STATES UPPER TROUGH...WHICH WILL SPREAD
FROM THE GREAT BASIN TO THE NORTH-CENTRAL ROCKIES...AND EVENTUALLY
REACH THE UPPER MIDWEST/CANADIAN PRAIRIES TONIGHT. AT THE
SURFACE...A COLD FRONT PROGRESSING EAST-SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE
UPPER MS RIVER VALLEY/CENTRAL PLAINS WILL SERVE AS THE PRIMARY FOCUS
FOR DEEP CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL LATER TODAY.

...UPPER MS VALLEY TO CENTRAL PLAINS...
QUASI-LINEAR BANDS OF SHOWERS/TSTMS WILL BE ONGOING EARLY THIS
MORNING ACROSS THE UPPER MS VALLEY VICINITY. CURRENT THINKING IS
THAT ANY EARLY PERIOD SEVERE THREAT WILL BE LIMITED BY THESE STORMS
OUTRUNNING THE PRIMARY INSTABILITY AXIS...IN ADDITION TO THE PRIMARY
LEAD MID LEVEL WAVE SHIFTING NORTHEASTWARD AWAY FROM THE REGION
EARLY THIS MORNING.

THIS EARLY DAY ACTIVITY DOES SUBSEQUENTLY PUT THE DEGREE OF
NEAR/PRE-FRONTAL DESTABILIZATION ACROSS THE UPPER MS VALLEY INTO
QUESTION...PRIMARILY UNCERTAIN ACROSS EASTERN MN/WESTERN WI.
NONETHELESS...AIDED BY THE GLANCING INFLUENCE OF THE NORTHERN PLAINS
UPPER TROUGH LATE THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...TSTMS SHOULD INCREASE
ALONG THE EXTENT OF THE COLD FRONT DURING THE AFTERNOON...ACROSS
EASTERN/SOUTHERN MN...WESTERN WI...AND ESPECIALLY PORTIONS OF IA
WHERE STRONGER HEATING/DESTABILIZATION IS EXPECTED. ADDITIONAL
STRONG/SEVERE TSTMS SHOULD DEVELOP/EXPAND SOUTHWESTWARD BY EARLY
EVENING WITHIN A MODERATELY UNSTABLE CORRIDOR ALONG THE IMMEDIATE
SURFACE FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST NEB/FAR NORTHERN
KS AND FAR NORTHWEST MO. OVERALL...DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE THE
PRIMARY CONCERN WITH A DOMINANT MULTICELLULAR MODE...AS THE GREATEST
VERTICAL SHEAR/COOLING ALOFT WILL TEND TO LAG /NORTHWEST OF/ THE
COLD FRONT/INSTABILITY AXIS. HOWEVER...SEVERE HAIL/BRIEF TORNADO
POTENTIAL MAY EXIST ACROSS THE WESTERN HALF OF IA/SOUTHEAST NEB/FAR
NORTHERN KS/NORTHWEST MO...GIVEN A GREATER RESERVOIR OF INSTABILITY
COINCIDENT WITH MODERATE NEAR-FRONTAL DEEP LAYER/LOW LEVEL SHEAR.

...CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS LATE THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING...
WITHIN A DEVELOPING POST-FRONTAL MOIST UPSLOPE REGIME...ASSORTMENT
OF NUMERICAL GUIDANCE IMPLY THAT ISOLATED TSTM DEVELOPMENT MAY OCCUR
NEAR THE NORTHERN CO FRONT RANGE AND/OR ACROSS THE ADJACENT CENTRAL
HIGH PLAINS BY EARLY EVENING. AS STORMS DEVELOP/SPREAD EASTWARD THIS
EVENING ALONG/NORTH OF THE SURFACE FRONTAL ZONE...A HIGHLY
SHEARED/STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT MAY YIELD SOME STORMS CAPABLE
OF SEVERE HAIL/GUSTY WINDS.

...NORTHERN MAINE TODAY...
PERHAPS AIDED BY A WEAK MID LEVEL IMPULSE CROSSING QUEBEC/NORTHERN
MAINE DURING THE DAY AMID MODERATELY STRONG NORTHWESTERLY FLOW
ALOFT...IT APPEARS THAT ISOLATED TSTMS WILL BE POSSIBLE MAINLY
ACROSS NORTHERN MAINE THIS AFTERNOON IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO A SURFACE
FRONT. CURRENT THINKING IS THAT ANY SEVERE POTENTIAL WILL REMAIN
VERY LOW...LARGELY ATTRIBUTABLE TO WARM TEMPERATURES/WEAK LAPSE
RATES ALOFT.
