0723 PM CDT FRI APR 16 2010

VALID 170100Z - 171200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...MID ATLANTIC THROUGH SRN PORTIONS OF OH VALLEY...

THIS EVENING A WARM FRONT EXTENDS FROM DEL NWD THROUGH ERN PA AND
CNTRL NY WHERE IT TRANSITIONS TO AN OCCLUDED FRONT. A COLD FRONT
EXTENDS FROM CNTRL NY SWWD THROUGH SWRN PA...SRN OH AND NWRN KY.
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS REMAIN IN VICINITY OF THE
COLD FRONT. OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS AND 00Z RAOB DATA INDICATE VERY
MARGINAL INSTABILITY REMAINING ALONG THE MOIST AXIS WHERE DEWPOINTS
ARE IN THE LOW 50S. TENDENCY HAS BEEN FOR STORMS TO DECREASE IN
INTENSITY...AND ANY REMAINING SEVERE THREAT IS RAPIDLY DIMINISHING
AS THE BOUNDARY LAYER STABILIZES.

AREAS AFFECTED...PA WSWWD THROUGH SRN OH...NRN WV AND NERN KY

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 71...

VALID 162214Z - 162315Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 71
CONTINUES.

THROUGH 00Z...THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WILL
EXIST OVER THE SERN PORTION OF WW AREA. ELSEWHERE...ISOLATED
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE...THOUGH OVERALL SEVERE
THREAT SHOULD BEGIN TO DIMINISH BY 00Z.

AS OF 2152Z...REGIONAL RADAR IMAGERY INDICATED WAVY...SHORT SEGMENT
MCS EXTENDING FROM SNYDER COUNTY SSWWD INTO FRANKLIN COUNTY PA.
THIS SYSTEM HAS A HISTORY PRODUCING SEVERE WIND GUSTS AT AOO...AND
THIS THREAT WILL LIKELY CONTINUE WHILE IT PROGRESSES ESEWD AT 50-55
KT. CURRENT SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT A MARINE BOUNDARY
LAYER HAS DEVELOPED WWD THROUGH NJ TO JUST W OF THE DE RIVER WHERE
TEMPERATURES DROP INTO THE 60S. THIS LIKELY DELIMITS THE EWD EXTENT
OF ANY MORE WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WIND THREAT. EXTRAPOLATION OF
CURRENT MOTION WOULD TAKE MCS INTO THIS COOLER MORE STABLE AIR MASS
BETWEEN 2330-0000 UTC. AFTER COORDINATION...A NEW WW WILL NOT BE
ISSUED FOR THE PHILADELPHIA METRO AREA.

ELSEWHERE...ISOLATED STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE WITH
LESSER ORGANIZED STORMS EXTENDING FROM LBE WSWWD PKB AS THEY ALSO
MOVE ESEWD AT 50-60 KT.

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 71...

VALID 162034Z - 162200Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 71
CONTINUES.

CLUSTERS OF TSTMS HAVE BECOME BETTER ORGANIZED WITH DAMAGING WIND
FROM PORTIONS ERN OH INTO WRN PA...AND WILL MOVE EWD INTO FAVORABLY
UNSTABLE AIR MASS ACROSS PORTIONS SRN/CENTRAL PA AND PERHAPS NRN WV.

GROUND TRUTH DURING PAST HOUR INCLUDES MEASURED 62 KT GUST AT HLG IN
WV...AND 57 KT AT AGC IN WRN PA. ASSOCIATED COLD POOL SHOULD HELP
TO MAINTAIN ASCENT INTO THIS ACTIVITY AS IT MOVES EWD THROUGH AIR
MASS CHARACTERIZED BY MRGL BUT SUFFICIENT BUOYANCY FOR SFC-BASED
UPDRAFTS...I.E. MLCAPE 250-500 J/KG BASED OM MODIFIED RAOBS AND RUC
SOUNDINGS. OTHER BANDS OR CLUSTERS OF TSTMS MAY BECOME SVR AS
CONVECTION NOW ACROSS SERN INDIANA...S-CENTRAL/SWRN OH AND EXTREME
NRN KY BECOMES BETTER-ORGANIZED AS THEY MOVE INTO PATCHES OF
RELATIVELY MAXIMIZED BUOYANCY WHERE PREVIOUS CONVECTION HAS NOT
SIGNIFICANTLY STABILIZED BOUNDARY LAYER. INCREASING MIDLEVEL HEIGHT
GRADIENTS WITH TIME -- AS TROUGH ALOFT APCHS FROM NRN ONT AND UPPER
GREAT LAKES -- WILL HELP TO MAINTAIN LOW-MIDDLE LEVEL SPEED SHEAR
AND POTENTIAL FOR DOWNWARD MOMENTUM TRANSFER. MAIN THREAT WILL
CONTINUE TO BE DAMAGING WIND FOR NEXT COUPLE HOURS...AS MLCINH AWAY
FROM OUTFLOWS REMAINS MINIMIZED BY DIURNAL HEATING. MEANWHILE...SFC
MESOANALYSIS INDICATES COLD FRONT CONTINUING TO MOVE SEWD ACROSS
NERN THROUGH CENTRAL OH...AND S-CENTRAL INDIANA. RELATED
CAA/STABILIZATION WILL REMOVE SVR CONVECTIVE WIND THREAT...AND WW
MAY CONTINUE TO BE CLEARED FROM NW-SE ACCORDINGLY.

SVR POTENTIAL WILL BECOME PROGRESSIVELY LESS W OF WW...WHERE CAPE
WILL REMAIN STRONGER BUT SHEAR MUCH WEAKER...AND E TO SE OF WW WHERE
AIR MASS BECOMES SUBSTANTIALLY MORE STABLE WITH PROXIMITY TO
DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY AND OVER CHESAPEAKE BAY.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
LATEST MODEL DATA REMAINS CONSISTENT WITH RESPECT TO THE UPPER FLOW
PATTERN ACROSS THE CONTINENTAL U.S. AS INDICATED IN THE INITIAL DAY
2 OUTLOOK. SPLIT FLOW REGIME WILL CONTINUE TO EXTEND FROM THE WRN
INTO CENTRAL STATES...WHILE A DEEP UPPER LOW SHIFTS EWD THROUGH THE

GREAT LAKES/OH VALLEY WITHIN THE SWRN EXTENT OF THE NE LOW. A COLD
FRONT...ASSOCIATED WITH THE NERN STATES UPPER LOW...WILL MOVE OFF
THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST EARLY AND PROCEED THROUGH THE SERN U.S. AND
CENTRAL GULF COAST STATES/LOWER MS VALLEY THE REST OF THE FORECAST
PERIOD.

...S TX...
A SURFACE LOW ATTENDANT TO THE WARM CORE MID-UPPER LEVEL LOW OVER
WEST TX TODAY WILL SHIFT SLOWLY EWD INTO NORTH CENTRAL TX DURING DAY
2. A WEAK TROUGH TRAILING SWWD FROM THE SURFACE LOW WILL SHIFT EWD
INTO CENTRAL TX. SURFACE DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S...SOME SURFACE
HEATING AND MODEST MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES /6.5-7 C/KM/ SHOULD RESULT
IN MLCAPE 500-1000 J/KG. MODELS ARE IN GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT A
WEAK MID LEVEL IMPULSE WITHIN SRN STREAM WILL TRACK EWD THROUGH S TX
SATURDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING AIDING IN CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ALONG
THE SURFACE TROUGH AND VICINITY OF SEA BREEZE BOUNDARY. DESPITE THE
POTENTIAL FOR MODERATE INSTABILITY ALONG THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY...

BOTH ITS LENGTH AND MESOSCALE TIMING DIFFERENCES IN ENDING OF THREAT

SFC MESOANALYSIS SHOWS COLD FRONT FROM SRN ONT SWWD ACROSS NWRN

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 161240
SWODY1
SPC AC 161238

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0738 AM CDT FRI APR 16 2010

VALID 161300Z - 171200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS TODAY ACROSS MUCH OF THE OHIO
VALLEY...

...SYNOPSIS...
AMPLIFIED RIDGING WITHIN A NORTHERN BRANCH OF THE PREVAILING SPLIT
UPPER FLOW MAY BECOME SUPPRESSED TODAY BY A COUPLE OF SHORT WAVE
IMPULSES PROGRESSING THROUGH ITS WESTERN AND NORTHERN
PERIPHERY...INCLUDING THE NORTHERN PORTION OF ONE SPLITTING AND
WEAKENING SYSTEM LIFTING INLAND ACROSS THE NORTH CENTRAL PACIFIC
COAST THROUGH THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION. AT THE SAME
TIME...A SIGNIFICANT DOWNSTREAM CLOSED LOW/UPPER TROUGH...WHICH IS
ALREADY TURNING MORE SHARPLY SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE UPPER
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...APPEARS LIKELY TO CONTINUE DIGGING ACROSS THE
GREAT LAKES. MODELS INDICATE THAT THIS FEATURE WILL BE ACCOMPANIED
BY STRENGTHENING FLOW IN A BROAD CYCLONIC BELT ACROSS THE UPPER
MIDWEST AND OHIO VALLEY THROUGH THE MID ATLANTIC COAST.

ACROSS THE SOUTHERN TIER STATES...MID/UPPER FLOW WILL REMAIN
GENERALLY WEAK...WITH AN EMBEDDED CUT-OFF CIRCULATION ONLY VERY
SLOWLY SHIFTING EASTWARD ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PLAINS...TO THE SOUTH
OF THE UPPER RIDGE...AS THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE SPLITTING SHORT
WAVE TROUGH PROGRESSES ACROSS THE LOWER COLORADO VALLEY AND THROUGH
THE SOUTHERN PLATEAU REGION.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THIS EVOLVING PATTERN...STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE
RATES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN CONFINED TO THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST AND
SOUTHERN ROCKIES...WHERE FORCING WITH THE UPPER IMPULSES ...COUPLED
WITH FAVORABLE OROGRAPHY...WILL PROBABLY BE SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. SUBSTANTIVE LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE
RETURN IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN CONFINED TO THE SOUTHERN PLAINS...WHERE
INHIBITION WILL REMAIN WEAK ENOUGH TO ALLOW CONSIDERABLE
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. BUT...A WEAK RETURN FLOW OF MOISTURE IN
ADVANCE OF A COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THE DIGGING GREAT LAKES
UPPER TROUGH ALSO APPEARS LIKELY TO CONTRIBUTE TO SUFFICIENT
DESTABILIZATION FOR THUNDERSTORMS... ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY INTO THE
LEE OF THE LOWER GREAT LAKES...AND THE NORTHERN MID ATLANTIC STATES.

...OHIO VALLEY...
SOUTH OF ONGOING WEAK FRONTAL/PRE-FRONTAL CONVECTION NOW DEVELOPING
EAST NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THE GREAT LAKES
REGION...BREAKS IN CLOUD COVER APPEAR SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW FOR
SUBSTANTIAL SURFACE HEATING AND STEEPENING OF LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES
THIS MORNING. AS SURFACE DEW POINTS CLIMB THROUGH THE
50S...GUIDANCE GENERALLY INDICATES THAT MIXED LAYER CAPE WILL EXCEED
500 J/KG BY 18Z...WITHIN A NARROW PRE-FRONTAL CORRIDOR. MODELS
SUGGEST THAT THIS DESTABILIZATION WILL LEAD TO A DEVELOPING LINE OR
LINES OF THUNDERSTORMS...NEARLY COINCIDENT WITH STRENGTHENING
LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC FLOW FIELDS...INCLUDING 50+ KT AT 700 MB
ACROSS PARTS OF INDIANA AND OHIO INTO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. WITH
LOW-LEVEL THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES CONDUCIVE TO DOWNWARD TRANSFER OF
THIS MOMENTUM...POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS MAY ACCOMPANY
CONVECTION THIS AFTERNOON AS IT DEVELOPS EASTWARD AND SOUTHWARD
ACROSS THE MID/UPPER OHIO VALLEY...BEFORE WEAKENING AS INSTABILITY
WANES EARLY THIS EVENING.

VALID 191200Z - 241200Z

...DISCUSSION...
MODELS CONTINUE TO GENERALLY AGREE THAT A LARGE LOW/TROUGH --
INITIALLY OVER THE GULF OF AK -- SHOULD MOVE SLOWLY SEWD INTO THE
WRN U.S. WITH TIME...RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT AMPLIFICATION OF THE
LARGE-SCALE PATTERN OVER THE CONUS.

MODELS ALSO AGREE...HOWEVER...THAT ONCE THIS FEATURE REACHES THE
SWRN STATES...IT WILL BE VERY SLOW TO MOVE EWD. WHILE SLY LOW-LEVEL
FLOW SHOULD INCREASE/EXPAND ACROSS THE PLAINS/CENTRAL THIRD OF THE
COUNTRY AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE...THE AMPLIFYING LARGE-SCALE RIDGE
ALOFT OVER THIS REGION SHOULD HINDER WIDESPREAD/SIGNIFICANT
CONVECTION -- AT LEAST UNTIL VERY LATE IN THE PERIOD. WHILE OVERALL
A SLOW INCREASE IN SEVERE POTENTIAL APPEARS POSSIBLE THROUGH THE
LATTER HALF OF THE PERIOD...CONFIDENCE THAT A WIDESPREAD/SIGNIFICANT
SEVERE EVENT WILL OCCUR BEFORE THE END OF THE PERIOD REMAINS LOW --
THUS PRECLUDING THE ADDITION OF A THREAT AREA THIS FORECAST.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0203 AM CDT FRI APR 16 2010

VALID 181200Z - 191200Z

...SYNOPSIS...
WITH A LARGE UPPER LOW VACATING THE NORTHEAST AND ANOTHER LINGERING
OFF OF WRN NOAM...LARGE-SCALE RIDGING WILL AGAIN AFFECT THE MAJORITY
OF THE CONUS.

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST TO BE MOST NUMEROUS ACROSS
THE ROCKIES...WHERE DIURNAL HEATING OVER HIGHER TERRAIN SHOULD
SUPPORT AFTERNOON CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER...MODEST FLOW
ALOFT COMBINED WITH WEAK LARGE-SCALE UVV SUGGESTS DISORGANIZED
STORMS...AND THUS THE THREAT FOR SEVERE CONVECTION APPEARS MINIMAL.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1223 AM CDT FRI APR 16 2010

VALID 171200Z - 181200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
BETWEEN AN UPPER LOW SHIFTING EWD ACROSS THE NORTHEAST AND
INCREASING TROUGHING OVER THE ERN PACIFIC AND ADJACENT W COAST
REGION...A SPLIT FLOW REGIME WILL PREVAIL ACROSS THE REST OF THE
CONUS. NRN STREAM RIDGING WILL BE STRONGEST ACROSS CENTRAL
CANADA...WHILE SRN STREAM SHORT-WAVE TROUGHING WILL AFFECT MAINLY
MEXICO AND THE GULF. IN BETWEEN -- OVER MUCH OF THE CENTRAL U.S.
AND INTO THE ROCKIES -- GENERALLY SLACK FLOW ALOFT WILL PREVAIL.

AT THE SURFACE...A COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THE NERN U.S. UPPER
LOW SHOULD CONTINUE TO PUSH OFF THE MID-ATLANTIC/CAROLINA COAST
EARLY...AND SO DESPITE A BELT OF STRONG FLOW ALOFT AROUND THE UPPER
SYSTEM...CONVECTION SHOULD REMAIN PRIMARILY OFFSHORE.

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT PARTS OF THE WRN U.S. -- BUT
SHOULD REMAIN GENERALLY WEAK AND DIURNAL IN NATURE. STORMS MAY ALSO
EVOLVE ACROSS PARTS OF TX AND EWD INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY INVOF
TRAILING PORTIONS OF THE ERN U.S. FRONTAL SYSTEM...BUT MODEST
INSTABILITY AND GENERALLY WEAK FLOW ALOFT PRECLUDE APPRECIABLE
SEVERE THREAT.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1218 AM CDT FRI APR 16 2010

VALID 161200Z - 171200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER A PORTION OF THE OH
VALLEY...

...OH VALLEY AREA...

UPPER TROUGH OVER SRN ONTARIO HAS CRESTED UPPER RIDGE AND WILL DROP
SEWD INTO THE GREAT LAKES AND OH VALLEY FRIDAY. ATTENDANT COLD FRONT
WILL CONTINUE SEWD...AND BY EARLY FRIDAY EVENING THIS BOUNDARY WILL
EXTEND FROM A SURFACE LOW IN SERN ONTARIO SWWD THROUGH THE OH VALLEY
AND SRN PLAINS.

A NARROW MOIST AXIS WITH LOW 50S DEWPOINTS FROM SERN WI SWWD INTO IA
WILL ADVECT EWD THROUGH THE OH VALLEY ALONG A 30-40 KT WLY LOW LEVEL
JET. DIABATIC WARMING OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL BE POSSIBLE OVER
PORTIONS OF THE OH VALLEY SOUTH OF PLUME OF DEEPER SUBTROPICAL
MOISTURE. MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL NOT BE PARTICULARLY STEEP WHICH
IN CONJUNCTION WITH MODEST LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE WILL LIMIT MLCAPE TO
AOB 500 J/KG WHICH COULD SERVE AS A POTENTIAL LIMITING FACTOR.
STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG AND JUST AHEAD OF SEWD
ADVANCING COLD FRONT AS THE ATMOSPHERE DESTABILIZES. DEEP LAYER FLOW
WILL INCREASE DURING THE DAY AS THE UPPER TROUGH ADVANCES SEWD.
UNIDIRECTIONAL WLY BULK SHEAR INCREASING TO 30-40 KT WILL SUPPORT
POTENTIAL FOR ORGANIZED STORM STRUCTURES INCLUDING BOWING SEGMENTS.
THIS IN CONJUNCTION WITH INVERTED-V BOUNDARY LAYERS MAY PROMOTE A
THREAT OF ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND. THREAT WILL DIMINISH BY MID
EVENING WITH ONSET OF NOCTURNAL COOLING.
