DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1230 PM CDT FRI JUN 26 2009

VALID 271200Z - 281200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM WRN GREAT LAKES THROUGH
LOWER MO VALLEY TO SRN KS/NRN OK...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE DAKOTAS
INTO FAR WRN MN...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS COASTAL CAROLINAS...

...SYNOPSIS...
SHORTWAVE TROUGH...CURRENTLY OVER WRN CANADA/NWRN U.S. IS FORECAST
TO AMPLIFY ESEWD ACROSS THE NRN PLAINS/UPPER MS VALLEY SATURDAY
ACCOMPANIED BY A COLD FRONT. AN IMPULSE CURRENTLY OVER THE SWRN
U.S. WILL EJECT NEWD OVER TOP OF UPPER RIDGE JUST AHEAD OF THIS
FEATURE. EARLY SATURDAY THE FRONT WILL EXTEND FROM A WEAK
SURFACE LOW IN MN SWWD THROUGH ERN NEB INTO SWRN KS THEN ADVANCE TO
A POSITION FROM MI SWWD INTO THE SRN PLAINS BY THE END OF THE
PERIOD. MEANWHILE...UPPER LOW...CURRENTLY OVER SRN ONTARIO...IS
FORECAST TO MOVE SEWD THROUGH NEW ENGLAND...DRIVING A COLD FRONT OFF
THE THE CAROLINA SEABOARD SATURDAY NIGHT. THE WRN PORTIONS OF THIS
BOUNDARY WILL LIFT NWD THROUGH THE MID MS VALLEY AS A WARM FRONT.

...WRN GREAT LAKES SWWD THRU MID MS VALLEY TO CENTRAL/SRN PLAINS...
AT 12Z SATURDAY...STORMS SHOULD BE ONGOING IN ASSOCIATION WITH LEAD
IMPULSE NORTH OF WARM FRONT WITHIN ZONE OF WARM ADVECTION AND
ISENTROPIC LIFT OVER THE UPPER MS VALLEY REGION. ACTIVITY WILL
LIKELY BE ELEVATED AND EMBEDDED WITHIN STRONG VERTICAL SHEAR...BUT
LIMITED INSTABILITY SUGGESTS ANY SEVERE THREAT SHOULD BE MINIMAL.

A RESERVOIR OF MID-UPPER 60S DEWPOINTS WILL EXIST SOUTH OF WARM
FRONT. AS THE MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER WARMS...THE ATMOSPHERE WILL
LIKELY BECOME MODERATELY UNSTABLE IN ADVANCE OF THE COLD FRONT.
PRIMARY LOW LEVEL JET IS FORECAST TO SHIFT ENEWD ACROSS THE WRN
GREAT LAKES DURING THE DAY...WITH WEAKENING AND VEERING BOUNDARY
LAYER FLOW IN WARM SECTOR. HOWEVER...STRENGTHENING MID-UPPER FLOW
IN ASSOCIATION WITH AMPLIFYING UPPER TROUGH WILL MAINTAIN 30-40 KT
BULK SHEAR OVER MID-UPPER MS VALLEY PORTION OF WARM SECTOR DESPITE
WEAKENING/VEERING LOW LEVEL WINDS. STORMS WILL REDEVELOP ALONG AND
AHEAD OF COLD FRONT AS THE BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZES SATURDAY
AFTERNOON...LIKELY EVOLVING INTO SUPERCELLS AND BOWING SEGMENTS.
DAMAGING WIND AND ISOLATED HAIL WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS.

FARTHER SW /I-70 IN MO TO NRN OK/TX PANHANDLE/...MODELS SUGGEST
WEAKER MID/UPPER LEVEL FORCING FOR ASCENT ACROSS THESE AREAS AS SRN
EXTENT OF NORTH CENTRAL STATES SHORT WAVE TROUGH MOVES ESEWD AND
WEAK IMPULSES FROM SWRN STATES TRACK INTO THE CENTRAL PLAINS.
THUS...GIVEN WEAKER FORCING ALOFT...STRONGER SURFACE HEATING WILL BE
NEEDED TO WEAKEN THE CAP ALONG THE SRN EXTENT OF THE SURFACE FRONT
WITH TSTMS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BY LATE AFTERNOON...OR MORE LIKELY BY
EARLY EVENING.

TSTMS SHOULD CONTINUE SATURDAY NIGHT AS THE FRONT MOVES S/SEWD
TOWARD THE OZARKS...RED RIVER VALLEY AND W TX...BUT WILL TEND TO
WEAKEN IN SEVERITY AS INSTABILITY WANES WITH THE ONSET OF BOUNDARY
LAYER COOLING. ACTIVITY SHOULD TEND TO BE MORE POST FRONTAL WITH
WAA REGIME ALONG NOSE OF 30 KT SLY LLJ EXTENDING INTO THE TX
PANHANDLE/WRN OK SATURDAY NIGHT SUPPORTING A GREATER LIKELIHOOD FOR
MORE SUSTAINED ELEVATED TSTMS. STRONGER EFFECTIVE SHEAR ACROSS NW
TX/WRN OK SUGGESTS ELEVATED TSTMS COULD BE ORGANIZED AT TIMES WITH A
THREAT FOR ISOLATED HAIL.

...DAKOTAS/WRN MN...
STRONG FORCING FOR ASCENT ATTENDANT TO AMPLIFYING UPPER TROUGH
ACROSS THIS REGION ON SATURDAY AND WITHIN EXIT REGION OF
ACCOMPANYING 60-70 KT MID LEVEL JET WILL SUPPORT TSTM DEVELOPMENT
ACROSS MUCH OF ND INTO NRN SD AND THEN WRN MN BY LATE AFTERNOON/
EVENING. DESPITE SURFACE HEATING AND STEEP LOW AND MID LEVEL LAPSE
RATES...SURFACE DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 40-MID 50S WILL TEND TO LIMIT
THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRONGER INSTABILITY. HOWEVER...THE STRONG
FORCING FOR ASCENT AND STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT/COOLING MID
LEVEL TEMPERATURES /-18 C AT 500 MB/ WILL SUPPORT A THREAT FOR
HAIL...SOME POSSIBLY LARGE. EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR AROUND 25 KT
SUGGESTS ACTIVITY WILL TEND TO BE MULTICELLULAR WITH STRONG WIND
GUSTS ALSO A THREAT.

...ERN CAROLINAS...
STRONG SURFACE HEATING WITHIN A MOIST/PRE-FRONTAL AIR MASS AND WEST
OF THE SEA BREEZE IS EXPECTED TO SUPPORT A MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR
MASS...DESPITE WEAK MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES. FORCING FOR ASCENT
SPREADING SEWD ACROSS THIS REGION BY LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON IS
EXPECTED TO SUPPORT TSTM DEVELOPMENT...ESPECIALLY WITH LOW LEVEL
CONVERGENCE INCREASING AS THE COLD FRONT MERGES WITH THE SEA BREEZE.
INCREASING NWLY FLOW ALOFT WILL SUPPORT EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR
SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZED STORMS AND A SEWD STORM MOTION. DAMAGING
WINDS AND MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL SHOULD BE THE PRIMARY THREATS.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 261730Z - 261930Z

CONVECTION IS BEGINNING TO DEVELOP WITHIN AN EAST-WEST LOW LEVEL
CONFLUENCE ZONE FROM WEST CENTRAL AL INTO CENTRAL GA. AS SURFACE
TEMPERATURES WARM INTO THE 90S AND DEW POINTS REMAIN IN THE LOW
70S...THE ENVIRONMENT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPE
OF 1500-2000 J/KG. WEAK WINDS IN THE LOW-MID LEVELS WILL RESULT IN
SLOW STORM MOVEMENT AND POTENTIAL FOR LOCALIZED HEAVY RAIN...WHILE
STRONGER NLY FLOW ABOVE 300 MB WILL ENHANCE STORM TOP DIVERGENCE AND
OVERALL STORM INTENSITY. DRIER AIR IN THE MID LEVELS IS
CONTRIBUTING TO STRONGER DOWNDRAFT POTENTIAL WITH DCAPE VALUES
GENERALLY GREATER THAN 1200 J/KG OVER THE AREA. THIS SUGGESTS A
THREAT FOR WET MICRO BURSTS/LOCALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WITH A FEW
STORMS. LIMITED COVERAGE OF SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO PRECLUDE
THE NEED FOR A WW.

CONVECTION WILL INCREASE IN COVERAGE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON...WITH
PRIMARY THREATS OF MARGINALLY SEVERE WINDS AND HEAVY RAINFALL.

VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY REFLECTS AN INCREASING CU FIELD IN A LINE
ROUGHLY EXTENDING FROM FRANKLIN VA SWWD TOWARDS COLUMBIA SC...LIKELY
IN PART DUE TO A DYING VORT MAX FROM YESTERDAY/S CONVECTION THAT HAS
NOW REACHED CNTRL NC/SC. CONVECTION WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON BENEATH STRONG UPPER DIVERGENCE...AND AS AMPLE
SURFACE HEATING/LOWER 70S DEW POINTS CONTINUE TO DESTABILIZE THE
ATMOSPHERE. WEAK FLOW WILL LIMIT OVERALL ORGANIZATION OF
STORMS...ALTHOUGH 12Z SOUNDINGS AND RECENT GOES PWAT IMAGERY SUGGEST
MORE THAN SUFFICIENT MOISTURE FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT AND HEAVY
RAINFALL POTENTIAL. PULSE STORMS AND MULTICELLULAR CLUSTERS WILL
GRADUALLY DEVELOP EWD INTO A VERY UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE RESIDING IN
THE PIEDMONT OF NC/SC...WITH ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT ALONG A SEA
BREEZE THAT HAS JUST BEGUN TO MOVE INLAND. AS STORMS SLOWLY PROGRESS
TOWARDS THE COAST...BRIEF INCREASES IN INTENSITY MAY BE POSSIBLE AS
OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES/SEA BREEZES CONVERGE. RELATIVELY WARM
TEMPERATURES ALOFT AND WEAK FLOW SUGGEST ONLY A MARGINAL HAIL

CONTINUE TO STEEPEN.

THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE DOWNSTREAM FROM THE LOWER
GREAT LAKES AS A WELL-DEFINED UPPER VORTICITY MAX OVER SWRN ONTARIO
MOVES SEWD THIS AFTERNOON. HOWEVER...REGIONS OF EXTENSIVE CLOUD
COVER AND SCATTERED CONVECTION ARE PRESENT ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION
AND THIS MAY LIMIT WIDESPREAD HEATING AND SUBSEQUENT
DESTABILIZATION. LATEST VISIBLE IMAGERY INDICATES BREAKS IN CLOUDS
OVER CENTRAL NY AND NERN NY TO THE EAST OF LAKE ONTARIO...AND THESE
REGIONS MAY CONTAIN FAVORED CORRIDORS FOR STRONGER CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT.

SURFACE TEMPERATURES ARE GENERALLY IN THE 70S WITH DEW POINT VALUES
IN THE LOW-MID 60S. RELATIVELY COOL MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES ON THE
CYCLONIC SIDE OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL JET ARE ENHANCING INSTABILITY
WITH SBCAPE OF 1500-2000 J/KG. AREA VWP DATA SHOW 30-40 KT WINDS
ABOVE 3-4 KM WITH DEEP LAYER SHEAR SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED
CONVECTIVE STRUCTURES. THIS SUGGESTS THAT CLUSTERS OF STRONG/SEVERE
STORMS WILL DEVELOP BY EARLY AFTERNOON...WITH ACTIVITY SPREADING
EWD/SEWD THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON.

AREAS AFFECTED...NRN AND CNTRL ME

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 261539Z - 261715Z

THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BEEN GRADUALLY INCREASING FROM WRN AROOSTOOK CNTY
SSWWD INTO EXTREME NRN OXFORD CNTY ME. ACTIVITY IS OCCURRING AHEAD
OF AN ADVANCING COLD FRONT AND TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR A
POSSIBLE WW.

STORMS HAVE DEVELOPED WITHIN THE WRN EDGE OF A LOW LEVEL MOISTURE
AND INSTABILITY AXIS WHERE SBCAPE IS 1500-2000 J/KG. THE AREA IS
WITHIN THE LEFT EXIT REGION OF AN UPPER LEVEL JET STREAK WHICH IS
PROVIDING DYNAMIC FORCING FOR LARGE SCALE ASCENT OVER THE AREA.
VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS THINNING CLOUDS AHEAD OF THE
CONVECTION SUGGESTING THAT ENHANCED DIABATIC HEATING AND ADDITIONAL
DESTABILIZATION IS LIKELY TO OCCUR INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS.
ALTHOUGH MID LEVEL WINDS AND DEEP LAYER SHEAR ARE MODEST AT BEST
/20-25 KT WINDS AT 500 MB/...WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SUGGEST DRIER
ENVIRONMENT IN THE MID/UPPER LEVELS WHICH MAY ENHANCE MID LEVEL
LAPSE RATES AND POTENTIAL FOR HAIL AND STRONG GUSTS.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE NORTHERN AND
CENTRAL PLAINS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE NORTHEAST STATES INTO
THE LOWER OH AND MID MS VALLEYS...

WATER VAPOR LOOPS SHOW A LARGE UPPER RIDGE CENTERED OVER THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS...WITH AN UPPER TROUGH OVER THE GREAT LAKES AND OVER
THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST STATES. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED
OVER MUCH OF THE GREAT BASIN AND ROCKIES EASTWARD INTO THE
CENTRAL/NORTHERN PLAINS...AND OVER MUCH OF THE EASTERN UNITED
STATES. CONCENTRATIONS OF STRONG/SEVERE STORMS ARE EXPECTED THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING OVER THE CENTRAL/NORTHERN PLAINS...AND ALONG A
COLD FRONT FROM NEW ENGLAND INTO THE LOWER OH VALLEY.

...NORTHEAST...
CYCLONIC FLOW ALOFT AND RELATIVELY COOL MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES ARE
IN PLACE THIS MORNING OVER MUCH OF THE NORTHEAST UNITED STATES.
SCATTERED MORNING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE ONGOING OVER
NY/VT/CT...AND OVER PARTS OF ONTARIO/QUEBEC AND WESTERN ME. POCKETS
OF CLOUD COVER AND PRECIPITATION THROUGHOUT THE REGION WILL
COMPLICATE THE FORECAST OF WHERE/WHEN STRONG CONVECTION MAY DEVELOP
THIS AFTERNOON. HOWEVER...A COMBINATION OF SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER
VERTICAL SHEAR AND MODERATE CAPE VALUES WILL POSE A RISK OF
ORGANIZED MULTICELL THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS
AND HAIL FROM ME INTO PA/NJ.

...OH VALLEY AND MID ATLANTIC...
STRONG DAYTIME HEATING HAS BEGUN ACROSS MUCH OF THE OH VALLEY AND
CENTRAL APPALACHIANS...INTO VA/MD. TEMPERATURES WILL CLIMB INTO THE
80S/90S OVER THIS REGION WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 60S TO LOWER
70S. THIS WILL YIELD A CORRIDOR OF STRONG INSTABILITY FROM MO/AR
EASTWARD. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
ALONG/AHEAD OF THE WEAK COLD FRONT MOVING SOUTHWARD ACROSS THE OH
VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON. THE BEST COMBINATION OF CAPE/SHEAR WILL BE
OVER PARTS OF WV/EASTERN KY...BUT SUFFICIENT PARAMETERS SUGGEST A
RISK OF SEVERE STORMS THROUGHOUT THE AREA. WARM TEMPERATURES ALOFT
MAY MITIGATE THE RISK OF LARGE HAIL...BUT LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS
WILL BE POSSIBLE IN STRONGER CELLS.

...NORTHERN/CENTRAL PLAINS...
SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW A SHORTWAVE TROUGH LIFTING NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS
UT/CO. THIS FEATURE IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD INTO THE NORTHERN PLAINS
BY THIS EVENING. STRONG HEATING IS OCCURRING OVER MOST OF THE
DAKOTAS AND NORTHERN NEB...WHERE AFTERNOON MLCAPE VALUES ARE
EXPECTED TO REACH 3000-4000 J/KG. MODEL GUIDANCE IS IN GOOD
AGREEMENT THAT THUNDERSTORMS WILL INTENSIFY BY MID/LATE AFTERNOON
FROM THE BLACK HILLS SOUTHWARD INTO WESTERN NEB...AND EVENTUALLY
NORTHWARD INTO THE CENTRAL DAKOTAS. THESE STORMS MAY INITIALLY BE
SUPERCELLULAR WITH A RISK OF A FEW TORNADOES. STORMS ARE LIKELY TO
ORGANIZE INTO A LINEAR MCS AND TRACK EASTWARD ACROSS THE DAKOTAS AND
NEB THROUGH THE EVENING WITH A CONTINUED RISK OF LARGE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WINDS. MESOSCALE MODELS SUGGEST SOME RISK OF BOW ECHO
FORMATION OVER THIS REGION...SUGGESTING A MORE CONCENTRATED RISK OF
DAMAGING WINDS IF THIS OCCURS.

...GREAT BASIN...
A RATHER COOL UPPER TROUGH CONTINUES TO DIG SOUTHWARD ACROSS CA/NV
THIS MORNING. STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND POCKETS OF HEATING
WILL RESULT IN SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY FOR SCATTERED AFTERNOON
THUNDERSTORMS AHEAD OF THE TROUGH ACROSS MUCH OF THE GREAT BASIN.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW MLCAPE VALUES OF 500-1000 J/KG AND EFFECTIVE
SHEAR OF 25-35 KNOTS. THIS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR A FEW ORGANIZED
MULTICELL OR ISOLATED HIGH-BASED SUPERCELL STORMS CAPABLE OF HAIL
AND GUSTY/DAMAGING WINDS. AREAL COVERAGE OF SEVERE ACTIVITY REMAINS
IN QUESTION...SO WILL MAINTAIN ONLY LOW PROBABILITIES OF SEVERE
WEATHER AT THIS TIME.

...CENTRAL GULF COAST...
MORNING RAOBS FROM LA/MS/AL SHOW AMPLE MOISTURE/INSTABILITY FOR
SCATTERED AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS...ALONG WITH
SUBSTANTIAL DRY AIR ALOFT/DCAPE. THIS MAY HELP TO ENHANCE
CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFTS AND CONTRIBUTE TO A RISK OF ISOLATED WET
MICROBURSTS IN STRONGER CORES.
