AREAS AFFECTED...NRN GA...WRN SC...SWRN NC...FAR SERN TN

CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

VALID 170055Z - 170500Z

COMPLEX EVOLUTION OF ONGOING MIXED PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE THIS EVENING OVER THE SRN APPALACHIANS WITH SIGNIFICANT
SPREAD IN MODEL PTYPE ALGORITHMS. OVERALL TREND SHOULD BE FOR
SNOW/SLEET TO GRADUALLY TRANSITION TO NEARLY ALL RAIN ALONG AND N OF
THE I-20 CORRIDOR IN NRN GA/WRN SC...WITH A TRANSITION TO
PREDOMINANTLY FREEZING RAIN OVER THE MTNS OF FAR NERN GA. SNOW/SLEET
WILL LIKELY REMAIN THE PREDOMINANT PTYPE OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS
OF THE WRN CAROLINAS.

00Z SUBJECTIVE SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACES HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED OVER
ERN NC WITH E TO W RIDGE AXIS HOLDING ACROSS NRN GA/AL. WITH AN
E/NELY SURFACE WIND COMPONENT...AN INFLUX OF COOL/DRY AIR NEAR THE
SURFACE WILL CONTINUE FROM THE LOWER MID-ATLANTIC /AS SAMPLED BY 00Z
GSO RAOB/. REGIONAL VAD PROFILERS DEPICT HIGHLY VEERED LOW-LEVEL
HODOGRAPHS INDICATIVE OF STRONG WARM/MOIST ADVECTION DOWNSTREAM OF
SURFACE CYCLONE OVER THE N-CNTRL GULF OF MEXICO. THIS IN COMBINATION
WITH MID-LEVEL IMPULSE /NOW OVER THE TN RIVER VALLEY PER WATER VAPOR
IMAGERY/...SHOULD MAINTAIN LIGHT TO LOCALLY MODERATE PRECIPITATION
ACROSS THE SRN APPALACHIANS THROUGH 06Z.

LATEST MODEL FORECAST GUIDANCE SUGGEST THE LLJ WILL STRENGTHEN AS
SURFACE WAVE APPROACHES FROM THE NRN GULF OF MEXICO. WHERE FULL
LOW/MID-LEVEL SATURATION HAS ALREADY OCCURRED /REF 00Z FFC RAOB/...A
SUBTLE NET WARMING OF THE THERMODYNAMIC PROFILE WILL OCCUR. THIS
SLOW WARMING SHOULD RESULT IN A TRANSITION OF SNOW/SLEET TO RAIN.
ACCUMULATING FREEZING RAIN SHOULD DEVELOP OVER THE FAR NERN GA MTNS
WHERE LATEST MESONET OBSERVATIONS INDICATE TEMPERATURES HAVE DROPPED
INTO THE UPPER 20S.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0069
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1223 PM CST WED JAN 16 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...NRN GA

CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

VALID 161823Z - 162230Z

A 2-3 HR PERIOD OF SNOW SHOULD DEVELOP OVER NRN GA TOWARDS 00Z AS AN
EXPANSIVE SWATH OF PRECIPITATION LIFTS SLOWLY NWD FROM THE ERN GULF
COASTAL PLAINS. MODERATE SNOWFALL RATES /AROUND 0.5 IN PER HR/
APPEAR LIKELY FROM THE I-20 CORRIDOR NWD GIVEN INITIAL PRESENCE OF
COLD/DRY AIR MASS IN LOW-LEVELS.

LOW-LEVEL WARM THETA-E ADVECTION DOWNSTREAM OF LOWER MS RIVER VALLEY
SHORT WAVE TROUGH IN COMBINATION WITH FAVORABLE DIVERGENCE S/SW OF
OH RIVER VALLEY/MID-ATLANTIC UPPER-LEVEL JET...WILL PROMOTE
PRECIPITATION SPREADING N/NEWD FROM THE GULF COASTAL PLAINS INTO THE
SRN APPALACHIANS. LATEST SUBJECTIVE SURFACE ANALYSIS INDICATES
CONTINUED RIDGING OVER NRN GA FROM HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED OVER THE
COASTAL CAROLINAS. MODEST ELY SURFACE WINDS ALONG WITH OVERCAST
SKIES/VIRGA HAVE SLOWED DIURNAL WARMING WITH SURFACE TEMPERATURES
GENERALLY HOLDING IN THE UPPER 30S. BOTH 12Z NAM/09Z NAMKF FORECAST
SOUNDINGS ARE AROUND 3 TO 8 DEG F TOO HIGH WITH BOTH
TEMPERATURES/DEW POINTS COMPARED TO 18Z SURFACE OBS. HOWEVER...THE
12Z GFS APPEARS TO MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLE THE LOW-LEVEL THERMODYNAMIC
PROFILE WHEN COMPARED TO ACARS/SURFACE OBS WITH WET-BULB
TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING ATTM. DESPITE STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL
WAA...INCREASING UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION/SATURATION SHOULD LEAD TO
DEEP ISOTHERMAL PROFILES BY 17/00Z...AS DEPICTED BY THE GFS.
ALTHOUGH PTYPE ALGORITHMS PREDOMINATELY SUGGEST RAIN...INITIAL LIGHT
RAIN/SLEET MIX SHOULD LARGELY TRANSITION TO NEARLY ALL SNOW AS FULL
SATURATION OCCURS. WITH TIME THIS EVENING...THE MAGNITUDE OF WAA
SHOULD RESULT IN A TRANSITION BACK TO RAIN WITH SNOW/FREEZING RAIN
RELEGATED TO THE FAR NRN GA MTNS.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1130 AM CST WED JAN 16 2008

VALID 171200Z - 181200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
DOWNSTREAM OF THE EASTERN PACIFIC BLOCK...THE POLAR TROUGH
ENCOMPASSING MUCH OF THE U.S. IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN AMPLIFIED
THROUGH THIS FORECAST PERIOD. MODELS INDICATE THAT ANOTHER
SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE IMPULSE WILL DIG FROM THE LEE OF THE CANADIAN
ROCKIES INTO THE NORTH CENTRAL STATES. AND...THIS IS PROGGED TO
CONTRIBUTE TO THE NORTHEASTWARD ACCELERATION OF A VIGOROUS IMPULSE
WHICH IS STILL EVOLVING OVER THE CENTRAL ROCKIES/PLAINS. THE LEAD
SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO SUPPRESS BROADER SCALE RIDGING ALONG THE
ATLANTIC SEABOARD...AND MAY SUPPORT THE AMPLIFICATION OF A FRONTAL
WAVE LIFTING NORTHEAST OF SOUTHERN MID ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS
THURSDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY FRIDAY.

FARTHER WEST...A SHORT WAVE TROUGH...NOW DIGGING ACROSS SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA...IS PROGGED TO GRADUALLY SPLIT OFF THE MAIN BELT OF
POLAR WESTERLIES...AND CONTINUE DIGGING THROUGH BAJA/THE
NORTHWESTERN MEXICAN PLATEAU. THE SYSTEM MAY SUPPORT INCREASING
LOW-LEVEL WARM ADVECTION ACROSS THE LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY AND
WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO. BUT...MODELS SUGGEST THAT ANY WAVE
DEVELOPMENT ALONG FRONT OVER THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO WILL REMAIN
WEAK THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY.

..SOUTHEASTERN STATES...
CONSIDERABLE VARIABILITY EXISTS AMONG THE NAM/GFS/ECMWF CONCERNING
THE TIMING OF A REMNANT SOUTHERN STREAM IMPULSE...AND ASSOCIATED
WEAKENING FRONTAL WAVE...ACROSS NORTHERN FLORIDA AND SOUTHERN
ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS. BUT...WITH BOUNDARY LAYER BASED
DESTABILIZATION EXPECTED TO REMAIN CONFINED TO THE OPEN WATERS OF
THE NORTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO AND WESTERN ATLANTIC...THIS IS NOT
EXPECTED TO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE SEVERE THREAT...WHICH
APPEARS NEGLIGIBLE WITH THE GENERAL TENDENCY FOR WEAKENING WIND
FIELDS/VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES EARLY IN THE PERIOD. SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY IS POSSIBLE ASSOCIATED WITH WEAK
DESTABILIZATION ABOVE WARM FRONTAL INVERSION...FROM PARTS OF GEORGIA
INTO THE CAROLINAS. ADDITIONAL STORMS MAY DEVELOP AHEAD OF THE COLD
FRONT APPROACHING THE FLORIDA PENINSULA. BUT...THESE ARE EXPECTED
TO WEAKEN AS THEY SPREAD INLAND ACROSS GULF COASTAL WATERS.

..TEXAS...
LOW-LEVEL WARMING/MOISTENING MAY CONTRIBUTE TO WEAK DESTABILIZATION
ABOVE STABLE SURFACE LAYER ACROSS LOWER TEXAS COASTAL AREAS THURSDAY
NIGHT. THIS MAY BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT...POSSIBLY WIDELY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY.

CONTINUING TO SPREAD WSW ACROSS THE FL PENINSULA FROM THE WRN
ATLANTIC. AT THE SAME TIME...TSTMS CONTINUE ALONG N-S CONFLUENCE
ZONE WITHIN WARM SECTOR OF AFOREMENTIONED GULF SFC WAVE. AS THE
WAVE CONTINUES GENERALLY ENE THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY...EXPECT TSTMS
TO CONTINUE FORMING ALONG CONFLUENCE BAND. THIS ACTIVITY MAY EVOLVE
INTO A LEWPY SQLN GIVEN AUGMENTATION OF SYSTEM-RELATIVE FLOW BY ELY
NEAR-SFC WINDS AND MODERATE TO STRONG WSW FLOW ALOFT.

SHALLOW COOL AIR MASS OVER FL WILL GRADUALLY ERODE FROM SW TO
NE...ESPECIALLY TONIGHT AND EARLY THURSDAY. ATTM...HOWEVER...IT
APPEARS THAT EWD MOTION OF SQLN...AND ENEWD ACCELERATION OF
ASSOCIATED UPR IMPULSE...WILL BE TOO RAPID TO ALLOW FOR
WIDESPREAD/SUBSTANTIAL DESTABILIZATION OVER FL BEFORE ARRIVAL OF
STRONGEST STORMS. NEVERTHELESS...WIND PROFILES WILL BE QUITE
FAVORABLE FOR SUSTAINED SUPERCELLS...AND AMPLE LOW LEVEL
SPEED/DIRECTIONAL SHEAR LIKELY WILL BE PRESENT TO SUPPORT LOW-LEVEL
STORM ROTATION AS 0-1 KM SHEAR INCREASES TO AROUND 40 KT.
THUS...DESPITE LIMITED INSTABILITY...EMBEDDED CELLS IN THE SQLN
COULD POSE A THREAT FOR LOCALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND/OR A BRIEF
TORNADO OR TWO...MAINLY TONIGHT AND EARLY THURSDAY FROM THE FL
PANHANDLE SE TO AROUND TPA.
