CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 242301Z - 250000Z

ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT IS POSSIBLE OVER WRN INTO NCNTRL
KS DURING THE EVENING. LARGE HAIL/DAMAGING WIND THREAT IS EXPECTED
TO BE TOO MARGINAL FOR WW.

SUBJECTIVE SURFACE ANALYSIS AT 22Z PLACES A 999 MB LOW INVOF
LAA...WITH A COLD FRONT EXTENDING E-NEWD TOWARD NCNTRL KS...AND THEN
WWD INTO THE DENVER METRO AREA. A HOT WELL MIXED BOUNDARY LAYER
AIRMASS HAS DEVELOPED NE ALONG THE FRONT...AUGMENTING CAP REMOVAL IN
THE PRESENCE OF STRENGTHENING LOW LVL CONVERGENCE. CU HAS DEVELOPED
WITHIN THIS REGION AS A RESULT...BUT HAVE BEEN SLOW TO DEVELOP DUE
TO GENERALLY WEAK LARGE SCALE ASCENT/FORCING.

AIRMASS ALONG/AHEAD OF THE FRONT OVER NCNTRL KS IS CHARACTERIZED BY
DEWPOINTS IN THE 50S...WHILE 40S DEWPOINTS RESIDE WITHIN POST
FRONTAL AIRMASS OVER WRN KS. THIS MOISTURE COMBINED WITH STEEP MID
LVL LAPSE RATES IS CONTRIBUTING TO 1000-2000 J/KG OF MLCAPE OVER
NCNTRL KS AND AROUND 500-1000 J/KG FARTHER WEST. IF A STORM OR TWO
ARE ABLE TO DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN DURING THE EVENING...THE STEEP
LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT COMBINED WITH 40-50 KT OF EFFECTIVE BULK
SHEAR ALONG AND TO THE IMMEDIATE COOL SIDE OF THE FRONT WOULD FAVOR
LARGE HAIL AND PERHAPS DAMAGING WIND GUSTS. GIVEN THE
MARGINAL/ISOLATED NATURE OF THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT...A WW
ISSUANCE IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

...DISCUSSION...

LONG RANGE MODELS INCLUDING ECMWF...UKMET...GFS AND MREF ARE IN
REASONABLE AGREEMENT REGARDING EVOLUTION OF THE LONGWAVE PATTERN
OVER THE CONUS THROUGH DAY 6. CONSENSUS IS THAT CUTOFF LOW WILL
EVOLVE OVER WRN STATES IN WAKE OF SHORTWAVE TROUGH FORECAST TO EJECT
THROUGH THE PLAINS AND MS VALLEY MONDAY.

DAY 4...CONSENSUS IS THAT COLD FRONT WILL ADVANCE INTO GREAT
LAKES...MID MS VALLEY AND SRN PLAINS IN WAKE OF NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE
TROUGH. STORMS WILL LIKELY BE ONGOING FROM PARTS OF THE MS VALLEY
INTO THE SRN PLAINS EARLY MONDAY. SOME THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS MAY
CONTINUE...PARTICULARLY ALONG SRN END OF FRONT OR MCS ACROSS A PART
OF THE SRN PLAINS INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY WHERE INFLUX OF HIGHER
THETA-E AIR WILL BE GREATER. DUE TO UNCERTAINTIES IMPOSED BY
LIKELIHOOD OF WIDESPREAD ONGOING CONVECTION...WILL NOT INTRODUCE A
THREAT AREA AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER...PORTIONS OF THE SRN PLAINS AND
MS VALLEY REGION MAY NEED TO BE INCLUDED IN A RISK AREA IN LATER
OUTLOOKS.

DAY5-7...MOISTURE IS FORECAST TO RETURN NWWD THROUGH THE CNTRL
PLAINS AS A LEE TROUGH DEVELOPS DOWNSTREAM FROM AMPLIFYING UPPER LOW
OVER THE WRN STATES. SOME THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS WILL LIKELY EXIST
OVER THE PLAINS DURING OF THIS PERIOD. HOWEVER...THE MORE
SIGNIFICANT SEVERE THREATS WILL BE MODULATED IN PART BY A SERIES OF
IMPULSES THAT WILL LIKELY EJECT NEWD THROUGH THE PLAINS DURING THIS
PERIOD. THESE FEATURES WILL BE DIFFICULT TO TIME. WILL REFRAIN FROM
DELINEATING A THREAT AREA THIS OUTLOOK DUE TO LINGERING UNCERTAINTY
REGARDING WHAT DAYS WILL POSE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SEVERE THREATS.
ONE OR MORE RISK AREAS WILL PROBABLY BE NEEDED...HOWEVER...IN FUTURE
UPDATES.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM PARTS OF THE SRN AND CNTRL
PLAINS INTO THE MID-UPPER MS VALLEY REGION...

...SYNOPSIS...

SIGNIFICANT MODEL DIFFERENCES ARE EVIDENT FOR SUNDAY REGARDING THE
DETAILS OF HOW THE UPPER TROUGH THAT WILL BOTTOM OUT NEAR THE FOUR
CORNERS EVOLVES AS IT MOVES INTO THE PLAINS. GFS AND ECMWF EJECT A
SIGNIFICANT SHORTWAVE TROUGH OUT OF BASE OF TROUGH NNEWD INTO THE
NRN PLAINS DURING THE DAY...LEAVING A WEAKER POSITIVE TILT TROUGH
FARTHER SOUTH THAT MOVES INTO THE CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS SUNDAY
EVENING AND OVERNIGHT. NAM SOLUTIONS EJECT THE INITIAL SHORTWAVE
MUCH FARTHER SOUTH ACROSS THE CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
IN EITHER CASE...THE PRIMARY SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE
CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS. HOWEVER...GFS AND ECMWF WOULD SUPPORT A SEVERE
THREAT FARTHER NORTH INTO THE UPPER MS VALLEY REGION.

AT THE SURFACE A WARM FRONT WILL LIKELY RETREAT NWD INTO THE UPPER
MS. DRYLINE WILL EXTEND N-S THROUGH W TX DURING THE AFTERNOON.
HOWEVER...THIS BOUNDARY WILL BE OVERTAKEN BY A PACIFIC FRONT SUNDAY
NIGHT. DETAILS REGARDING THE EVOLUTION OF SURFACE PATTERN DIFFER DUE
TO MODEL DIFFERENCES IN HANDLING EJECTING SHORTWAVE TROUGH.

...SRN AND CNTRL PLAINS...

ELEVATED STORMS WILL LIKELY BE ONGOING WITHIN ZONE OF ISENTROPIC
LIFT NORTH OF WARM FRONT OVER A PORTION OF THE CNTRL PLAINS. AN AXIS
OF RICHER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S WILL EXIST IN
WARM SECTOR SOUTH OF WARM FRONT AND EAST OF DRYLINE. PLUME OF STEEP
MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL ADVECT EAST AND CONTRIBUTE TO AN AXIS OF
MODERATE INSTABILITY FROM WRN KS...WRN OK AND WRN TX AS LOW CLOUDS
MIX OUT AND THE BOUNDARY LAYER WARMS. THE WARM SECTOR WILL INITIALLY
BE CAPPED. HOWEVER...STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG CONVERGENT
DRYLINE AS IT MIXES EAST AND AS THE CAP WEAKENS BY LATE AFTERNOON.
BULK SHEAR OF 40-50 KT WILL SUPPORT SUPERCELLS AND 0-1 KM HODOGRAPH
SIZE WILL ALSO INCREASE AS THE LOW LEVEL JET STRENGTHENS DURING THE
EARLY EVENING. LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL BE THE INITIAL
PRIMARY THREATS. HOWEVER...STORMS MAY EVENTUALLY EVOLVE INTO ONE OR
MORE MCSS OVERNIGHT WITH THREAT TRANSITIONING TO ISOLATED DAMAGING
WIND AND HAIL.

...MID-UPPER MS VALLEY REGION...

EXTENT OF SEVERE THREAT IN THIS REGION IS MORE UNCERTAIN DUE TO
SIGNIFICANT MODEL DIFFERENCES. NEVERTHELESS...STORMS DEVELOPING
NORTH OF RETREATING WARM FRONT MAY POSE A THREAT FOR HAIL. AS THE
BOUNDARY LAYER WARMS AND DESTABILIZES...POTENTIAL FOR SURFACE BASED
STORMS MAY INCREASE DURING THE AFTERNOON. PRIMARY SEVERE THREATS IN
THIS REGION ARE EXPECTED TO BE ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS WI/MI BORDER REGION TO NRN
KS...

...SYNOPSIS...
PRIMARY AND HIGHLY AMPLIFIED SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS EVIDENT ATTM FROM
HUDSON MAY REGION SWWD ACROSS SRN SASK...NRN ID AND ORE...THEN
OFFSHORE NRN CA. STG CONSENSUS OF OPERATIONAL GUIDANCE AND SREF
MEMBERS IS THAT SRN LOBE OF THIS PERTURBATION WILL DEVELOP CLOSED
500 MB LOW BY EARLY IN PERIOD OVER NRN CA...WHICH SHOULD MOVE SEWD
TO SWRN NV BY 25/12Z. ATTACHED SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MAINTAIN
PRONOUNCED POSITIVE TILT. SRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH -- NOW
EVIDENT IN MOISTURE CHANNEL IMAGERY AND VWP/PROFILER DATA OVER W TX
-- IS FCST TO MOVE EWD OVER E TX AND AR LATE IN PERIOD...WHILE
WEAKENING. AT SFC...COLD FRONT IS FCST TO SAG SWD ACROSS UPPER MS
VALLEY AND CENTRAL PLAINS.

...WI/MI BORDER REGION TO NRN KS...
SCATTERED TSTMS SHOULD DEVELOP INVOF SFC FRONT DURING AFTERNOON AND
EVENING...PERHAPS IN A FEW LOOSELY SEGMENTED NODES AT FIRST...THEN
CONGEALING INTO MORE CONTINUOUS BAND OF ACTIVITY WITH EMBEDDED
STG-SVR TSTMS BY EARLY EVENING. EVENTUAL QUASI-LINEAR MODE IS
EXPECTED TO EVOLVE...GIVEN KINEMATIC GEOMETRY RELATIVE TO FRONTAL
ZONE. LONG FETCH OF SWLY FLOW ALOFT IS FCST DOWNSTREAM FROM
MID-UPPER LOW OVER CA/NV...AND SHOULD BLOW NEARLY PARALLEL TO SFC
FRONTAL ZONE BETWEEN UPPER GREAT LAKES AND CENTRAL PLAINS. EXPECT
SFC DEW POINTS GENERALLY MID 50S TO LOW 60S F -- BELOW MID 60S
UNREASONABLY PROGGED BY NAM-BKF -- WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MLCAPE
2000-2500 J/KG OVER MUCH OF THIS CORRIDOR.

CONVECTIVE COVERAGE SHOULD BECOME SMALLER ACROSS KS...WHERE STRONGER
CAP BUT ALSO STRONGER HEATING AND STEEPER LOW-MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES
WILL RESULT IN MORE SPORADIC/CONDITIONAL SVR THREAT...BUT RISK OF
SIGNIFICANT SEVERE HAIL WITH ANY SUPERCELLS. VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES
WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR STORM ROTATION -- WITH ATTENDANT RISK OF LARGE
AND DAMAGING WIND -- THROUGHOUT CATEGORICAL OUTLOOK AREA.
SUPERCELLS ARE MOST LIKELY WITH ANY RELATIVELY SUSTAINED/DISCRETE
STORMS WHOSE INFLOW AND PRECIP DISTRIBUTION IS NOT DISRUPTED BY
OTHER CONVECTION IN CLOSE PROXIMITY. SVR POTENTIAL SHOULD DIMINISH
AFTER APPROXIMATELY 06Z AS NOCTURNALLY COOLED BOUNDARY LAYER
DEEPENS...AND AS PREFRONTAL LLJ BECOMES MORE PARALLEL WITH FRONTAL
ZONE.

...CENTRAL/E TX...
SEVERAL CLUSTERS OF TSTMS SHOULD DEVELOP THROUGHOUT PERIOD IN ZONE
OF CYCLONIC MID-UPPER FLOW...LARGE-SCALE ASCENT/DESTABILIZATION
ALOFT...AND FAVORABLE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE SURROUNDING UPPER TROUGH.
POCKETS OF STG SFC HEATING...DIFFERENTIAL HEATING ZONES AND/OR
OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES APPEAR TO BE LIKELIEST SOURCES OF SUFFICIENT LOW
LEVEL LIFT. HOWEVER...STRENGTH/POSITION OF SUCH BOUNDARIES REMAINS
STRONGLY DEPENDENT ON MESOBETA SCALE FACTORS AND THUS VERY UNCERTAIN
ATTM.

DURING AFTERNOON...WHEN CONVECTION SHOULD BE STRONGEST
OVERALL...ENHANCED DEEP-LAYER SHEAR MAY EXIST BENEATH BELT OF
STRONGEST 700-500 MB WINDS...FROM BASE OF TROUGH OVER S-CENTRAL TX
NEWD ACROSS COASTAL PLAIN TO SE TX. GREATER CAPPING OVER THIS
AREA...AND LACK OF EVIDENT BOUNDARIES AS INITIATING FOCI...LEND
UNCERTAINTY TO COVERAGE OF CONVECTION. FARTHER N TOWARD ARKLATEX
AND N-CENTRAL TX...FLOW SHOULD BE MORE UNIDIRECTIONAL...WITH WEAKER
CAPPING BUT ALSO CONCERNS OVER CLOUD COVER AND PRECIP LIMITING
BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZATION. GIVEN THESE OFFSETTING
FACTORS....WILL MAINTAIN BROAD-BRUSH AREA OF MRGL SVR PROBABILITIES
ATTM...AWAITING BETTER DEFINED/JUXTAPOSED MESOSCALE FOCI BEFORE
PERFORMING ANY CATEGORICAL UPGRADE.

...CAROLINAS TO ERN GA...
WIDELY SCATTERED TO SCATTERED TSTMS MAY DEVELOP DURING AFTERNOON IN
ZONE OF STG SFC HEATING AND PROGRESSIVELY WEAKER CINH...PERHAPS
REGULATED OVER SRN PORTION OF OUTLOOK BY BOUNDARY LEFT BEHIND FROM
PRIOR GA ACTIVITY. SFC DEW POINTS MID 50S TO LOW 60S F BENEATH 7-8
DEG C/KM LOW-MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MLCAPE
1500-2500 J/KG ATOP WELL-MIXED/SUBCLOUD LAYER. POTENTIALLY DAMAGING
GUSTS APCHG 50 KT SVR CRITERIA...AS WELL AS ISOLATED MRGL SVR
HAIL...ARE POSSIBLE. GIVEN POSITION OF THIS REGION ALMOST DIRECTLY
BENEATH MID-UPPER LEVEL HIGH...FLOW WILL BE WEAK AT ALL LEVELS...AS
WILL VERTICAL SHEAR. THIS WILL LIMIT STORM MODE TO MULTICELLULAR
AND PULSE IN CHARACTER...AND DAMPEN OVERALL ORGANIZATION OF SVR
THREAT.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE SRN AND CNTRL PLAINS
THROUGH THE MID MS VALLEY AND GREAT LAKES REGION...

...SYNOPSIS...

MODEL CONSENSUS IS THAT UPPER PATTERN WILL EVOLVE INTO A SPLIT FLOW
REGIME BY SATURDAY. POSITIVE TILTED UPPER TROUGH OVER THE PACIFIC NW
WILL MOVE THROUGH THE NRN PLAINS...UPPER MS VALLEY AND GREAT LAKES.
CONCURRENTLY...SECONDARY VORT LOBE OFF THE OREGON COAST WILL ADVANCE
SEWD...REACHING THE FOUR CORNERS AREA SATURDAY EVENING. PASSAGE OF
NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL PROVIDE IMPETUS FOR A COLD FRONT TO
CONTINUE SEWD THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES...MS VALLEY AND SRN PLAINS.
TRAILING END FRONT WILL LIKELY STALL FROM NW OK INTO THE TX
PANHANDLE OR NW TX AND MAY BEGIN TO RETREAT NWD SATURDAY NIGHT AS
SURFACE RIDGE SHIFTS FARTHER EAST. DURING THE AFTERNOON A DRYLINE
WILL EXTEND THROUGH WRN TX NWD WHERE IT WILL INTERSECT THE COLD
FRONT.

SHORTWAVE TROUGH NOW MOVING THROUGH WRN TX WILL ADVANCE SLOWLY ENEWD
INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY REGION.

...CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS AREA...

COLD FRONT WILL LIKELY ADVANCE INTO SRN KS...PARTS OF NRN OK AND THE
TX PANHANDLE BY SATURDAY EVENING. RICHER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WILL
ADVECT NWD THROUGH PRE-FRONTAL WARM SECTOR WITH DEWPOINTS IN THE MID
60S AS FAR NORTH AS OK. SWLY FLOW ALOFT WILL EXIST OVER THE CNTRL
AND SRN PLAINS DOWNSTREAM FROM SHORTWAVE TROUGH BOTTOMING OUT NEAR
THE FOUR CORNERS REGION. THIS WILL RESULT IN EWD TRANSPORT OF STEEP
MID LEVEL LAPSE ABOVE THE MOIST WARM SECTOR. THESE PROCESSES AND
DIABATIC HEATING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MODERATE SURFACE BASED
INSTABILITY FROM TX NWD THROUGH OK SATURDAY AFTERNOON. HOWEVER...EWD
ADVECTION OF THE EML WILL LIKELY CONTRIBUTE TO A CAP OVER MUCH OF
THE WARM SECTOR DURING THE DAY.

NAM AND GFS BOTH SUGGEST A WEAK LEAD WAVE WILL EJECT ENEWD THROUGH
KS EARLY IN THE PERIOD. HOWEVER...TIMING OF ANY SUCH FEATURE AT THIS
POINT WOULD BE DIFFICULT. GIVEN PRESENCE OF CAP AND WEAK LARGE SCALE
FORCING...THUNDERSTORM INITIATION DURING THE DAY IS SOMEWHAT
UNCERTAIN. HOWEVER...INITIATION IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR NEAR TRIPLE
POINT OVER SW OK OR NW TX WHERE THE DRYLINE INTERSECTS THE COLD
FRONT AS WELL AS OVER SRN KS ALONG SWD ADVANCING COLD FRONT. LOW
LEVEL HODOGRAPHS WILL INITIALLY NOT BE PARTICULARLY LARGE IN WARM
SECTOR...BUT WILL INCREASE DURING THE EVENING AS THE LOW LEVEL JET
STRENGTHENS. BULK SHEAR WILL SUPPORT SUPERCELLS WITH LARGE HAIL
LIKELY AND ISOLATED TORNADOES POSSIBLE DURING THE EARLY
EVENING...ESPECIALLY WITH ANY STORM THAT CAN INITIATE NEAR TRIPLE
POINT.

OVERNIGHT...THE STRENGTHENING SLY LOW LEVEL JET WILL AUGMENT
DESTABILIZATION AND ISENTROPIC LIFT NORTH OF FRONTAL BOUNDARY
RESULTING IN AN INCREASE IN ELEVATED STORMS ACROSS KS. LARGE HAIL
WILL BE THE MAIN THREAT WITH THIS ACTIVITY.

...MID MS VALLEY THROUGH GREAT LAKES REGION...

MOIST AXIS WILL ADVECT NEWD THROUGH THE MID MS VALLEY AND GREAT
LAKES REGION. DEWPOINTS WILL RANGE FROM THE LOW 60S OVER THE MID MS
VALLEY TO UPPER 50S OVER THE GREAT LAKES. PRE-FRONTAL DIABATIC
HEATING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DESTABILIZATION DURING THE
AFTERNOON...BUT MODEST MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL LIKELY LIMIT
MLCAPE TO AOB 1000 J/KG WITH CAPE INCREASINGLY MARGINAL TOWARD THE
GREAT LAKES. STORMS WILL LIKELY BE ONGOING EARLY SATURDAY ALONG THE
COLD FRONT...BUT WILL LIKELY INTENSIFY AS THIS BOUNDARY ADVANCES
SEWD THROUGH THE DESTABILIZING WARM SECTOR. VERTICAL SHEAR IS NOT
FORECAST TO BE PARTICULARLY STRONG...AROUND 30 KT IN WARM SECTOR.
HOWEVER...MODERATE TO STRONG UNIDIRECTIONAL SWLY FLOW WILL EXIST IN
VICINITY OF THE FRONT. PRIMARY THREAT APPEARS TO BE ISOLATED
DAMAGING WIND AND POSSIBLY SOME HAIL.

...SRN AND CNTRL APPALACHIANS...

ISOLATED MULTICELL STORMS THAT DEVELOP OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN
DURING THE AFTERNOON MAY BECOME CAPABLE OF PRODUCING MARGINALLY
SEVERE HAIL AND STRONG WIND GUSTS. ACTIVITY WILL DIMINISH WITH LOSS
OF HEATING.
