DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook Amend 1

ACUS01 KWNS 282048
SWODY1
SPC AC 282047

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK AMEND 1
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0247 PM CST THU JAN 28 2010

VALID 282041Z - 291200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT
OVER PARTS OF TX...

AMENDED FOR ADDITION OF CATEGORICAL SLIGHT RISK TO THE DALLAS/FORT
WORTH METROPLEX

...N-CNTRL TX...

SEVERAL REPORTS OF WIND DAMAGE HAVE BEEN RECEIVED WITH
ONGOING...BOWING MCS APPROACHING THE METROPLEX. WHILE BOUNDARY
LAYER REMAINS RELATIVELY COOL AND STABLE...IT APPEARS THAT A
SUFFICIENT NEGATIVE BUOYANCY IS BEING GENERATED BY
EMBEDDED...SMALLER-SCALE BOWS AND LEWPS SUCH THAT LOCALLY DAMAGING
WINDS WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE WITH MCS FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS.

...CNTRL/SRN TX...

A BOWING MCS HAS EVOLVED TODAY OVER PARTS OF W-CNTRL TX WITH
BACKBUILDING/REGENERATIVE STORM DEVELOPMENT OCCURRING ALONG SWRN
EXTENSION OF SYSTEM N/NW OF DRT. RECENT TRENDS IN VISIBLE SATELLITE
IMAGERY SHOW A GRADUAL EROSION OF LOW CLOUDS OVER THE EDWARDS
PLATEAU AND LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY...WHICH IS ALLOWING FOR LOCALLY
STRONGER DIABATIC HEATING. AT THE SAME TIME...40-50 KT SELY LLJ IS
MAINTAINING THE INFLUX OF A MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER INTO REGION WITH
DEWPOINTS IN THE LOWER TO MID 60S. CONTINUED HEATING SHOULD SUPPORT
FURTHER DESTABILIZATION THIS AFTERNOON WITH MLCAPE APPROACHING
1000-1500 J/KG PER 18Z RUC GUIDANCE.

BOWING...NRN EXTENSION OF ONGOING TSTM BAND SHOULD TEND TO WEAKEN
WHILE MOVING EWD INTO A PROGRESSIVELY MORE STABLE AIR MASS IN PLACE
E OF I-35. FARTHER S/SW...STORMS DEVELOPING ALONG/AHEAD OF COLD
FRONT OVER THE EDWARDS PLATEAU REGION WILL LIKELY POSE A GREATER
AND/OR LONGER-LIVED SEVERE WEATHER THREAT. HERE...THE
MOIST/MODERATELY UNSTABLE AIR MASS WILL COEXIST WITH A KINEMATIC
ENVIRONMENT FEATURING PRONOUNCED VEERING OF WINDS THROUGH THE LOWEST
1-2 KM AGL AND 50-60 KT OF DEEP-LAYER SHEAR. AS SUCH...THE
POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR SUPERCELLS IN ADDITION TO BOWING LINE
SEGMENTS CAPABLE OF DAMAGING WINDS...HAIL /POSSIBLY SIGNIFICANT/ AND
A TORNADO OR TWO.

ACTIVITY SHOULD GROW UPSCALE INTO AN MCS TONIGHT WITH A PREFERRED
SEWD SYSTEM PROPAGATION/MOVEMENT INTO LOW-LEVEL INSTABILITY AXIS IN
PLACE OVER THE HILL COUNTRY AND LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY.

..MEAD.. 01/28/2010

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1025 AM CST THU JAN 28 2010/

A POWERFUL UPPER TROUGH CONTINUES TO PROGRESS EASTWARD ACROSS
NORTHERN MEXICO...WITH LARGE SCALE LIFT SPREADING EASTWARD ACROSS
TX/OK. MORNING VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS THINNING LOW CLOUDS
IN A NARROW CORRIDOR EXTENDING FROM THE LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY INTO
THE HILL COUNTRY. THIS AREA WILL SEE THE STRONGEST DESTABILIZATION
LATER TODAY WITH DEWPOINTS CLIMBING TO NEAR 60F AND MUCAPE VALUES OF
1000 J/KG. MULTIPLE BANDS OF THUNDERSTORMS WILL TRACK ACROSS THIS
REGION TODAY...WITH AN EVENTUAL INCREASE IN THE RISK OF
SURFACE-BASED CONVECTION. A COMBINATION OF RELATIVELY STEEP MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND SUFFICIENT CAPE WILL PROMOTE A FEW INTENSE
STORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW
FAVORABLE DEEP LAYER AND LOW LEVEL VERTICAL SHEAR FOR
SUPERCELLS...CAPABLE OF LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. SOME CONCERN
WILL ALSO EXIST FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES EARLY THIS EVENING. STORMS
WILL PERSIST OVERNIGHT...BUT ARE EXPECTED TO BE LESS INTENSE AS THEY
TRACK EASTWARD ACROSS TX.

VALID 282043Z - 282215Z

A SHORT-TERM WATCH IS BEING ISSUED FOR THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH
AREA...BUT THE SEVERE THREAT APPEARS LIKELY TO DIMINISH AS ACTIVITY
SPREADS EAST OF THE METROPLEX LATE THIS AFTERNOON.

MODELS ARE SUGGESTIVE THAT MID-LEVEL FORCING SUPPORTING ONGOING
VIGOROUS STORM CLUSTER WILL LIFT ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL/NORTHEAST
TEXAS INTO THE RED RIVER VALLEY BETWEEN NOW AND 23-00Z... WEAKENING
AS IT DOES. THE STRONGEST PORTION OF THE LINE APPEARS FOCUSED JUST
SOUTH OF STALLED EAST-WEST ORIENTED FRONT...WHERE MID 50S SURFACE
DEW POINTS COULD BE CONTRIBUTING TO VERY WEAK SURFACE OR NEAR
SURFACE BASED INSTABILITY. THIS ACTIVITY COULD MAINTAIN STRENGTH
ACROSS THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH METROPLEX BETWEEN 21-22Z...WITH
CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFTS STILL STRONG ENOUGH TO ENHANCE THE DOWNWARD
TRANSFER OF MOMENTUM NEAR A 40-50 KT SOUTHERLY 850 MB JET AXIS.
HOWEVER...IT DOES APPEAR THAT THE CONVECTION IS ADVANCING EASTWARD
FASTER THAN THE LOW-LEVEL JET AND BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE RETURN.
SO...IT SEEMS THAT ACTIVITY PROBABLY WILL BEGIN TO WEAKEN AS SYSTEM
RELATIVE INFLOW EMANATES FROM INCREASINGLY DRIER AIR EAST OF DALLAS
AFTER 22Z.

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 13
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
240 PM CST THU JAN 28 2010

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS

EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 240 PM UNTIL
700 PM CST.

HAIL TO 1 INCH IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 60
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 10 MILES NORTH
NORTHWEST OF DALLAS TEXAS TO 50 MILES SOUTHWEST OF WACO TEXAS.
FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH
OUTLINE UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU3).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...ORGANIZED AND FAST MOVING SQUALL LINE IS APPROACHING
THE DFW METRO AREA...WITH A HISTORY OF DAMAGING WINDS. BOUNDARY
LAYER AIRMASS APPEARS TO HAVE BARELY SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY TO ALLOW
STRONGER WIND GUSTS TO REACH THE SURFACE. ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY
MAINTAIN A RISK OF LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS FOR ANOTHER 2-3 HOURS AS
IT PROGRESSES ACROSS HIGH POPULATION AREAS. STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO
WEAKEN AFTER DARK AS THEY MOVE EAST OF THE LOW LEVEL JET AXIS AND
INTO AN EVEN MORE STABLE ENVIRONMENT.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 1 INCH. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS.
A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 300. MEAN STORM MOTION

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0152 PM CST THU JAN 28 2010

VALID 282000Z - 291200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT
OVER PARTS OF CNTRL AND SRN TX...

...CNTRL/SRN TX...

TRENDS ARE BEING MONITORED FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF AN INCREASING
SEVERE THREAT AND THE NEED FOR A WW...WHICH COULD OCCUR AS EARLY AS
21-23Z.

WITH A SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE IMPULSE JUST BEGINNING TO PIVOT AROUND
THE SOUTHWESTERN PERIPHERY OF THE SOUTHERN PLATEAU CLOSED
LOW...MOIST LOW-LEVEL UPSLOPE FLOW AND WARM ADVECTION PERSIST ACROSS
THE REGION IN THE WAKE OF ONE SHORT WAVE NOW LIFTING THROUGH THE
SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS. THIS FORCING FOR ASCENT... COUPLED WITH
DIFLUENT AND AT LEAST WEAK DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW... APPEARS TO BE
MAINTAINING AN ENVIRONMENT FAVORABLE FOR VIGOROUS STORM

THE HIGHER TERRAIN TO THE SOUTH OF THIS BOUNDARY...WHICH WILL
PROBABLY SPREAD ACROSS THE RIVER INTO TEXAS ...AIDED BY 50-70 KT
WESTERLY 500 MB FLOW. ALTHOUGH THE STRONGER LOW-LEVEL JET IS
BEGINNING TO SHIFT EASTWARD TOWARD THE I-35 CORRIDOR OF THE SOUTHERN

...FLORIDA PENINSULA...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS THE ERN U.S.
SATURDAY AS A COLD FRONT ADVANCES SEWD ACROSS THE ERN GULF COAST
STATES. THE GFS AND NAM DIFFER ON THE PLACEMENT OF THE FRONT BY
SATURDAY AFTERNOON WITH THE GFS PUTTING THE BOUNDARY FURTHER SOUTH
INTO CNTRL FL. BOTH MODELS SHOW MODERATE TO STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR
PROFILES ACROSS FL DUE TO A MID-LEVEL JET IN THE BASE OF THE
UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH. HOWEVER...THE MODELS ARE IN DISAGREEMENT
CONCERNING THE AMOUNT OF DESTABILIZATION THAT TAKES PLACE ACROSS
CNTRL FL SATURDAY. THE ETA-KF IS THE MOST AGGRESSIVE SOLUTION WITH
MUCAPE VALUES IN CNTRL FL FROM 1000 TO 1200 J/KG. IF THIS VERIFIES
ALONG WITH SFC DEWPOINTS IN THE MID 60S F...THEN AN ISOLATED
DAMAGING WIND THREAT MAY EXIST WITH THE STRONGER CELL ELEMENTS ALONG
THE FRONT. HAVE ADDED A SEE TEXT FOR PARTS OF CNTRL FL FOR A
CONDITIONAL SEVERE WEATHER THREAT DEPENDENT UPON DESTABILIZATION.

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...TX COASTAL PLAIN/SRN LA/SRN MS/WRN FL PANHANDLE...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS
FRIDAY AS A COLD FRONT ADVANCES QUICKLY EWD FROM THE TX COASTAL
PLAINS INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY. THUNDERSTORMS WILL LIKELY BE
ONGOING ALONG THE BOUNDARY FRIDAY MORNING ALONG THE MID TO UPPER TX
COAST. LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE ALONG THE BOUNDARY SHOULD ENCOURAGE
LINEAR DEVELOPMENT AND A 40 TO 50 KT LOW-LEVEL JET WILL ALSO SUPPORT
THE CONVECTION. ETA-KF FORECAST SOUNDINGS IN SE TX FRIDAY AT 15Z
SHOW SFC DEWPOINTS IN THE LOWER 60S F WITH MUCAPE BETWEEN 500 AND
1000 J/KG. THIS COMBINED WITH 50 TO 60 KT OF SHEAR AND 40 KT AT 1 KM
SHOULD BE ENOUGH FOR A MARGINAL WIND DAMAGE THREAT WITH THE MORE
INTENSE CELL ELEMENTS IN THE LINE. SOME SFC HEATING MAY OCCUR AHEAD
OF THE LINE IN SRN LA AND SRN MS. HOWEVER...WEAK MOISTURE RETURN
SHOULD KEEP SFC DEWPOINTS ONLY IN THE LOWER 60S F ACROSS THE MS
DELTA REGION. FOR THIS REASON...THE SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO
REMAIN MARGINAL DURING THE DAY AS THE LINE ADVANCES EWD REACHING THE
FL PANHANDLE BY FRIDAY EVENING.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF SOUTH TX...

...SOUTH TX...

STRONG...WELL DEFINED UPPER TROUGH IS SHIFTING EAST ACROSS THE SWRN
U.S./NRN MEXICO WHILE A STRONG MID LEVEL SPEED MAX IS EXPECTED TO
ROUND THE BASE OF THE TROUGH BEFORE EJECTING NEWD INTO SOUTH TX
EARLY. THIS FEATURE WILL ENHANCE THE LARGE SCALE ASCENT ACROSS THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS AS LLJ RESPONDS AND AIDS LOW LEVEL WARM ADVECTION
FROM DEEP SOUTH TX INTO OK. EXPANSIVE CLOUD COVER/PRECIP WILL LIMIT
BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING AHEAD OF SAGGING POLAR FRONT...THOUGH BREAKS
MAY ENCOURAGE SOME HEATING ALONG THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NERN MEXICO
INTO THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY IMMEDIATELY AHEAD OF PACIFIC COLD FRONT.
LATEST GUIDANCE SUGGESTS WIDESPREAD CONVECTION WILL EASILY
DEVELOP...INITIALLY ATOP COOLER AIRMASS WHERE ASCENT WILL BE
MAXIMIZED. HOWEVER...WITH TIME IT APPEARS NEAR-SFC BASED CONVECTION
WILL GRADUALLY EVOLVE ALONG ADVANCING FRONTAL ZONE ALONG NERN PLUME
OF SOMEWHAT STEEPER LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES WHERE MUCAPE WILL APPROACH
500-1000 J/KG. THIS ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY REMAIN FOCUSED
ALONG/BEHIND WIND SHIFT BUT WITHIN VEERING PROFILES FAVORABLE FOR
ROTATING UPDRAFTS. THE PRIMARY CONCERN FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
THIS PERIOD WILL BE WITH ANY SUPERCELLS THAT CAN DEVELOP WITHIN
BROADER CONVECTIVE FRONTAL BANDS. IT/S NOT ENTIRELY CLEAR WHETHER
DISCRETE STRUCTURES WILL EVOLVE AHEAD OF COLD FRONT AND THUS AN
ELONGATED MCS WILL LIKELY BE THE PRIMARY CONVECTIVE MODE FROM SW-NE
ACROSS TX BEFORE SHIFTING EAST LATE IN THE PERIOD. GIVEN THE
MOISTENING PROFILES AND STRONG SHEAR...AN ISOLATED TORNADO CAN NOT
BE RULED OUT WITH AFOREMENTIONED SUPERCELLS ALONG/JUST AHEAD OF COLD
FRONT. OTHERWISE...GUSTY WINDS MAY ACCOMPANY ANY BOWING SEGMENTS
ALONG THE MCS WHILE MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL COULD BE NOTED WITH
UPDRAFTS NEAR/BEHIND COLD FRONT.
