MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0299
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0439 PM CST MON FEB 25 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN TX...SERN OK...SWRN AR...NWRN LA

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 252239Z - 260045Z

THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BY ABOUT 00Z...WITH WIND AND
HAIL THE MAIN SEVERE THREATS.

22Z SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED A LOW PRESSURE TROUGH EXTENDING FROM ERN
OK SWWD ACROSS THE DALLAS/FT WORTH AREA...WITH DRYLINE NEARLY
COINCIDENT. A WARM FRONT REMAINED IN PLACE FROM FAR SERN OK INTO SRN
AR...WHILE COLD FRONT/DEEPER WIND SHIFT WAS SURGING SEWD ACROSS
CNTRL OK INTO NWRN TX. VISIBLE IMAGERY INDICATED CU FORMING AS A
RESULT OF THE INTENSE COOLING ALOFT OVER OK.

STRONG HEATING AND DOWNSLOPE FLOW HAVE STEEPENED LOW LEVEL LAPSE
RATES W OF THE DRYLINE ALTHOUGH LITTLE MOISTURE WAS AVAILABLE IN
THIS AIR MASS. A FEW DEEPER CU WERE NOTED ON VISIBLE IMAGERY ALONG
THE DRYLINE JUST S OF THE METROPLEX WHERE NOSE OF STRONG SURFACE
HEATING LOCALLY ERODED CAPPING. THESE ATTEMPTS AT STORMS HAVE FAILED
AS STEERING WINDS HAVE MOVED THEM OFF THE BOUNDARY AND INTO A HIGHER
CIN ENVIRONMENT WHERE TEMPERATURES WERE COOLER. ALTHOUGH SURFACE
DEWPOINTS WERE RISING INTO THE UPPER 50S AND LOWER 60S OVER ERN
TX...THE QUALITY/DEPTH OF THE MOIST LAYER IS LIKELY BEING DECREASED
ACROSS THE OPEN WARM SECTOR AS 850 WINDS HAVE VEERED SUBSTANTIALLY.

THE MOST LIKELY AREA FOR DEVELOPMENT WILL BE FROM FAR NERN TX ACROSS
SERN OK AND INTO SWRN AR...WHERE LIFT WILL BE ENHANCED ACROSS THE
WARM FRONT...AND AS DEEPER COLD FRONT INTERSECTS THE AREA FROM THE
NW. LARGELY UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND PROFILES SUGGEST A LINEAR STORM MODE
IS MOST LIKELY WITH A DAMAGING WIND THREAT. HAIL WILL ALSO BE LIKELY
GIVEN STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT.

WHILE CAPPING WILL INHIBIT WARM SECTOR DEVELOPMENT AWAY FROM THE
COLD FRONT...WIND PROFILES WILL FAVOR SUPERCELLS. ANY ISOLATED CELL
THAT CAN DEVELOP ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE WARM FRONT AND AHEAD OF THE
COLD FRONT COULD POSE A TORNADO THEAT...ESPECIALLY WHERE DEWPOINTS
RISE INTO THE 60S F. THIS INCLUDES AREAS SUCH AS SRN AR AND NRN LA.

SPC AC 251959

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0159 PM CST MON FEB 25 2008

VALID 252000Z - 261200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE ARKLATEX EWD THROUGH
MS AND AL...

..ARKLATEX THROUGH MS AND AL...

THIS AFTERNOON A COLD FRONT EXTENDS FROM A SURFACE LOW IN NERN KS
SWWD THROUGH WRN OK INTO THE TX PANHANDLE. DRYLINE EXTENDS FROM ERN
OK THROUGH CNTRL AND SWRN TX. AXIS OF MODIFIED CP AIR WITH LOW TO
MID 60S DEWPOINTS RESIDES OVER SERN TX. THIS MOISTURE WILL CONTINUE
ADVECTING NNEWD ALONG A STRONG SWLY LOW LEVEL JET THAT HAS BECOME
ESTABLISHED OVER ERN TX AND THE LOWER MS VALLEY DOWNSTREAM FROM A
SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER THE SRN PLAINS. MOIST ADVECTION BENEATH AN EWD
ADVECTING EML AND SURFACE HEATING WILL CONTRIBUTE TO AN AXIS OF 1000
TO 1500 J/KG MLCAPE FROM ERN TX INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY DURING THE
NEXT SEVERAL HOURS. STRENGTH OF EML AND LESS THAN OPTIMAL MOISTURE
RETURN SUGGEST THE BOUNDARY LAYER WILL PROBABLY REMAIN CAPPED UNTIL
THE FRONT MERGES WITH DRYLINE AND INTERCEPTS MOIST AXIS. ZONE OF
DEEPER ASCENT ATTENDING THE FRONT AND DPVA ACCOMPANYING THE
SHORTWAVE TROUGH SHOULD PROVE SUFFICIENT TO INITIATE STORMS BY EARLY
EVENING.

VERTICAL WIND PROFILES AHEAD OF THE FRONT ARE FAVORABLE FOR
ORGANIZED STORMS WITH LARGE LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS AND BULK SHEAR
INCREASING TO AOA 60 KT AS MID LEVEL JET ROTATES THROUGH BASE OF
UPPER TROUGH. SOME DISCRETE SUPERCELLS STRUCTURES WILL BE POSSIBLE
MAINLY SHORTLY AFTER INITIATION. HOWEVER...THE STRONGLY FORCED
NATURE OF THE CONVECTION SUGGEST STORMS WILL TRANSITION TO LINE
SEGMENTS WITH POTENTIAL FOR BOWING STRUCTURES AND EMBEDDED
SUPERCELLS. DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS...THOUGH
A COUPLE OF TORNADOES WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE.

STRONG FRONTAL FORCING AND MOIST ADVECTION ALONG THE LOW LEVEL JET
WILL SUPPORT A CONTINUED SEVERE THREAT EWD INTO PARTS OF MS AND AL
OVERNIGHT. ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND SHOULD BECOME THE MAIN THREAT.
HOWEVER...WEAKENING INSTABILITY MAY EVENTUALLY SERVE AS A LIMITING
FACTOR WITH ERN EXTENT INTO THIS REGION.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1130 AM CST MON FEB 25 2008

VALID 261200Z - 271200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM SERN AL THROUGH SRN
GA...NRN AND CNTRL FL...

..SYNOPSIS...

POSITIVELY TILTED UPPER TROUGH CURRENTLY FROM THE CNTRL PLAINS SWWD
INTO THE SWRN U.S. WILL MOVE ENEWD INTO TN VALLEY AND MID ATLANTIC
TUESDAY AFTERNOON. A NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER CNTRL CANADA
IS FORECAST TO DROP SWD INTO THE MEAN TROUGH POSITION AND CONTRIBUTE
TO AMPLIFICATION OF UPPER TROUGH OVER THE ERN STATES. SURFACE LOW
ATTENDING INITIAL IMPULSE WILL DEEPEN AND LIFT NEWD INTO THE MID
ATLANTIC AND NERN STATES...WHILE TRAILING COLD FRONT ADVANCES SEWD
THROUGH THE SERN STATES AND FL.

..AL...GA AND FL...

A STRONG WSWLY LOW LEVEL JET WILL SHIFT EWD THROUGH THE ERN PARTS OF
THE SERN STATES IN ASSOCIATION WITH SURFACE LOW LIFTING NEWD THROUGH
TN...OH VALLEYS AND MID ATLANTIC REGIONS. CURRENT OBSERVATIONS SHOW
UPPER 60S TO AROUND 70 DEWPOINTS OVER MUCH OF THE CNTRL GULF REGION.
THE STRONG LOW LEVEL JET WILL CONTRIBUTE TO NEWD ADVECTION OF MID
60S DEWPOINTS INTO SRN AL AND SRN GA...WITH UPPER 60S POSSIBLE INTO
THE FL PANHANDLE AND NRN THROUGH CNTRL FL. THIS MOIST AXIS WILL
RETURN BENEATH MODERATELY STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES...RESULTING IN
MLCAPE FROM 500 TO 1000 J/KG OVER PARTS OF SRN AL INTO SRN GA WITH
1000 TO 1500 J/KG FARTHER SOUTH ACROSS FL. SOME CONVECTION SHOULD BE
ONGOING ALONG OR JUST AHEAD OF THE FRONT WITHIN ZONE OF DEEPER
FORCING FROM PARTS OF THE MS INTO THE TN VALLEY REGION. ACTIVITY
OVER MS COULD POSE AT LEAST A MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT. AS
DESTABILIZATION COMMENCES...POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR STORMS TO
INTENSIFY AS THEY CONTINUE EWD. NEW STORMS MAY ALSO DEVELOP AHEAD OF
THE FRONT WITHIN CONFLUENT LOW LEVEL FLOW REGIME ALONG LOW LEVEL JET
AXIS FROM SRN GA INTO NRN FL. WSWLY ORIENTATION OF THE LOW LEVEL JET
WILL RESULT IN LARGELY UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND PROFILES SUPPORTIVE OF
ORGANIZED STORM STRUCTURES INCLUDING BOWING SEGMENTS AND SPLITTING
SUPERCELLS. DAMAGING WIND AND LARGE HAIL WILL BE THE MAIN THREATS.

..ERN CAROLINAS...

MOISTURE RETURN IN THIS REGION WILL BE MORE LIMITED THAN FARTHER
SOUTH. HOWEVER...AN AXIS OF WEAK INSTABILITY MAY DEVELOP OVER THE
ERN CAROLINAS DURING THE DAY AS MID TO UPPER 50S DEWPOINTS ADVECT
NWD. POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR A LINE OF LOWER TOPPED STORMS TO
UNDERGO SOME INCREASE IN INTENSITY AS THEY DEVELOP INTO THIS REGION.
DEEP SHEAR WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED STORMS WITH BOW ECHOES
AND DAMAGING WIND THE PRIMARY THREAT. DUE TO LINGERING CONCERNS
ABOUT DESTABILIZATION POTENTIAL WILL MAINTAIN SEE TEXT WITH THIS
OUTLOOK. HOWEVER...PORTIONS OF THE ERN CAROLINAS MAY NEED TO BE
INCLUDED IN A SLIGHT RISK IN LATER OUTLOOKS.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 251626
SWODY1
SPC AC 251623

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1023 AM CST MON FEB 25 2008

VALID 251630Z - 261200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS MAINLY TONIGHT FROM THE
ARKLATEX EWD ACROSS MS/AL...

..SYNOPSIS...
MID LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGHS IN NM AND KS WILL PHASE TOGETHER BY LATE
AFTERNOON ACROSS OK/NRN TX...AND AID IN AMPLIFYING THE LARGE SCALE
TROUGH FROM THE CENTRAL/SRN PLAINS EWD ACROSS THE LOWER/MID MS
VALLEY REGION TONIGHT. ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW...CURRENTLY LOCATED IN
NERN KS...IS FORECAST TO SHIFT RAPIDLY ESEWD AND INTO WRN KY BY
DAYBREAK TUESDAY. TRAILING COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE
CENTRAL/SRN PLAINS TODAY AND LOWER/MID MS VALLEY TONIGHT.

..LOWER MS VALLEY REGION...
OF INITIAL CONCERN FOR SEVERE STORMS IS LACK OF BOUNDARY LAYER
MOISTURE...AS DEWPOINTS WERE MOSTLY IN THE 40S AND LOWER 50S AS OF
MID MORNING. HOWEVER...AN AXIS OF MID 60S DEWPOINTS IN SRN TX IS
EXPECTED TO SURGE NEWD INTO THE ARKLATEX REGION BY LATE TODAY...IN
RESPONSE TO STRONG SURFACE PRESSURE FALLS. THE INCREASING BOUNDARY
LAYER MOISTURE COMBINED WITH 7-8C/KM MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL
RESULT IN MLCAPE VALUES FROM 1000-1500 J/KG IN A NARROW CORRIDOR
FROM THE MIDDLE TX COAST NEWD TO THE ARKLATEX BY EVENING.

THE INITIALLY SHALLOW MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER AND STRONG CONVECTIVE
INHIBITION ASSOCIATED WITH THE ELEVATED MIXED LAYER WILL LIKELY
DELAY CONVECTIVE INITIATION UNTIL AROUND 00Z. THEREAFTER...AS THE
STRONGER LARGE SCALE LIFTING SPREADS EWD...CONVECTION IS EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP IN THE ARKLATEX AREA...AND THEN SPREAD QUICKLY EWD OVERNIGHT
ACROSS AR/NRN LA/MS/TN/AL.

LOW-LEVEL JET NEAR 50 KT AND MID LEVEL WSWLY FLOW OF 70-90 KT WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO STRONG LOW/DEEP VERTICAL SHEAR IN THE WARM SECTOR. THE
INITIAL CONVECTION IN THE ARKLATEX MAY CONSIST OF SUPERCELLS WITH AN
ATTENDANT THREAT FOR A COUPLE OF TORNADOES...DAMAGING WINDS...AND
LARGE HAIL.

DESPITE THE LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING ...LOW-LEVEL MOISTENING AND
FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THE SURFACE FRONT SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO
MAINTAIN THUNDERSTORMS OVERNIGHT. THE SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO
EVOLVE TO A MORE DAMAGING WIND THREAT OVERNIGHT ACROSS PORTIONS OF
TN/MS/AL...AS A LINEAR CONVECTIVE SYSTEM EVOLVES ALONG THE COLD
FRONT.

SWODY1
SPC AC 251243

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0643 AM CST MON FEB 25 2008

VALID 251300Z - 261200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS MAINLY TONIGHT FROM THE
ARKLATEX EWD ACROSS MS/SRN AL...

..LOWER MS VALLEY AREA THIS EVENING INTO TONIGHT...
A SRN STREAM MID LEVEL TROUGH NOW EMERGING OVER THE SRN HIGH PLAINS
AND AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE CYCLONE IN NRN KS WILL PROGRESS EWD TO THE
LOWER MS AND LOWER OH VALLEYS AND AMPLIFY TONIGHT IN RESPONSE TO
PHASING OF THE SRN AND NRN STREAMS. THIS SYSTEM WILL BE ACCOMPANIED
BY A PLUME OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES ALREADY OVER THE SRN
PLAINS. BENEATH THE STEEP LAPSE RATES...INDUCED SLY FLOW IN THE
WARM SECTOR WILL DRAW BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S NWD ACROSS
THE NW GULF COAST TOWARD THE ARKLATEX. THIS DIFFERENTIAL
ADVECTION...ALONG WITH DAYTIME HEATING INVOF A DEVELOPING DRYLINE
ACROSS TX...WILL RESULT IN MLCAPE VALUES OF 1000-1500 J/KG IN A
NARROW CORRIDOR FROM THE MIDDLE TX COAST TO THE ARKLATEX BY THIS
EVENING.

AN INITIALLY SHALLOW MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER...RELATIVELY LATE ARRIVAL
OF THE RICHER LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE...AND STRONG CONVECTIVE INHIBITION
ASSOCIATED WITH THE ELEVATED MIXED LAYER WILL LIKELY DELAY
CONVECTIVE INITIATION UNTIL 00-03Z INVOF THE DRYLINE/COLD FRONT
INTERSECTION. THEREAFTER...CONVECTION SHOULD SPREAD QUICKLY EWD
OVERNIGHT ACROSS SE AR/NRN LA/MS/TN/AL. DESPITE THE LOSS OF DAYTIME
HEATING...LOW-LEVEL MOISTENING SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO MAINTAIN DEEP
CONVECTION THROUGH THE NIGHT AS BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S
SPREAD NWD FARTHER E INTO MS AND SRN AL.

LOW-LEVEL SWLY FLOW NEAR 50 KT AND MID LEVEL WSWLY FLOW OF 70-90 KT
WILL CONTRIBUTE TO STRONG VERTICAL SHEAR IN THE WARM SECTOR. THE
INITIAL CONVECTION MONDAY EVENING MAY CONSIST OF SUPERCELLS WITH AN
ATTENDANT THREAT FOR A COUPLE OF TORNADOES...DAMAGING WINDS...AND
LARGE HAIL. THE SEVERE THREAT SHOULD TRANSITION PRIMARILY TO
DAMAGING WINDS OVERNIGHT WITH MORE LINEAR CONVECTIVE STRUCTURES IN
AN ENVIRONMENT WITH ONLY LIMITED INSTABILITY.

..DISCUSSION...
IN WAKE OF DAY-3 UPPER TROUGH OVER ERN CONUS...DEEP/COLD FROPA
THROUGH GULF WILL PRECLUDE POTENTIAL FOR WELL-ORGANIZED SVR FOR A
FEW DAYS THEREAFTER. MANY MREF MEMBERS...AS WELL AS OPERATIONAL
SPECTRAL/ECMWF...CONSISTENTLY INDICATE SOME MANIFESTATION OF
SHORTWAVE TROUGH NOW E OF JAPAN WILL MOVE ASHORE PACIFIC NW AROUND
DAY-6/1-2 MAR. THIS TROUGH THEN IS PROGGED TO AMPLIFY CONSIDERABLY
AS IT MOVES SEWD OVER CENTRAL/SRN ROCKIES DAYS 7-8...2-4
MAR...PRECEDED BY LOW LEVEL FRONTOGENESIS/CYCLOGENESIS OVER SOME
PORTION CENTRAL/SRN PLAINS. CONSIDERABLE DISPARITY EXISTS IN
PROGGED RESPONSE OF CONVECTIVELY CRITICAL LOW LEVEL MASS FIELDS TO
THIS FEATURE...AS WELL AS TO PRECURSORY/SRN STREAM WAVE THAT MAY
EJECT FROM NWRN MEX ACROSS TX OR NERN MEX IN RESPONSE TO
LARGER/APCHG TROUGH.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
IN MID/UPPER LEVELS...POSITIVELY TILTED AND HIGHLY AMPLIFIED
SYNOPTIC TROUGH IS FCST TO TAKE SHAPE OVER ERN NORTH AMERICA...BY
BEGINNING OF PERIOD. INITIAL CONTRIBUTING SHORTWAVE -- NOW OVER
GREAT BASIN REGION -- IS EXPECTED TO MOVE EWD ACROSS GREAT
PLAINS...TN /OH VALLEYS AND APPALACHIANS THROUGH DAY-2...THEN
DEAMPLIFY AND EJECT OFFSHORE MID-ATLANTIC/NEW ENGLAND BY 27/12Z.
THIS WILL OCCUR AS UPSTREAM PERTURBATIONS -- INCLUDING TWO NOW
EVIDENT IN MOISTURE CHANNEL IMAGERY OVER WRN CANADA -- REINFORCE ERN
TROUGHING. AS THIS OCCURS...SFC CYCLONE WILL OCCLUDE OVER MID
ATLANTIC...LIFTING NEWD OUT OF SRN/ERN NEW ENGLAND BY MIDDLE OF
DAY-3 PERIOD...THEN EJECTING RAPIDLY ACROSS NORTH ATLANTIC.
TRAILING COLD FRONT SHOULD BE MOVING SEWD ACROSS SRN FL OR KEYS
AROUND 27/12Z.

..S FL/KEYS...
TSTMS MAY BE ONGOING ALONG/AHEAD OF SFC COLD FRONT ACROSS S FL AND
ADJACENT WATERS...DURING FIRST FEW HOURS OF PERIOD. MARINE AIR
MASS...ADVECTING EWD ACROSS THIS REGION FROM GULF...WILL BE
CHARACTERIZED BY SFC DEW POINTS MID 60S TO LOW 70S F. ASSOCIATED
THETAE ADVECTION MAY OFFSET WEAK LOW-MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES AND
NOCTURNAL DIABATIC COOLING TENDENCIES ENOUGH TO SUPPORT 500-1000
J/KG MLCAPE. ALTHOUGH FCST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST CINH SHOULD BE
WEAK...LIMITING FACTORS FOR CONVECTIVE COVERAGE/INTENSITY WILL
INCLUDE WEAKNESS OF LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE RESULTING FROM WLY
COMPONENT OF PREFRONTAL SFC WINDS. ANY SVR POTENTIAL WITH THIS
ACTIVITY APPEARS TOO WEAK/CONDITIONAL FOR PROBABILITIES ATTM.
