NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1228 PM CDT MON JUN 21 2010

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF NRN AND CENTRAL MO INTO CENTRAL IL

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH LIKELY

VALID 211728Z - 211830Z

WATCH WILL BE NEEDED EARLY THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS PARTS OF NRN AND
CENTRAL MO INTO MUCH OF CENTRAL IL.

EARLY AFTERNOON SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED A WARM FRONT EXTENDING ESEWD
FROM NERN IA THROUGH CENTRAL IL/IND INTO SRN OH. REGIONAL
RADARS/LIGHTNING DATA INDICATED AN AREA OF TSTMS TRACKING ENEWD
ACROSS SERN IA ALONG THE LEADING EDGE OF THE REMNANT IA MCS AND
ASCENT WITH ATTENDANT MCV/SHORTWAVE TROUGH. ADDITIONAL STORMS WERE
DEVELOPING ACROSS WEST CENTRAL IL SWWD INTO CENTRAL MO WHERE STRONG
SURFACE HEATING IS WEAKENING SBCINH SUFFICIENTLY FOR SURFACE BASED
STORMS. ALTHOUGH STORMS IN WEST CENTRAL IL MAY STILL BE SLIGHTLY
ELEVATED TO THE NNE OF AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY... WHICH EXTENDED FROM
SRN IL NWWD TO NERN MO...FORECAST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST THIS ACTIVITY
WILL BECOME SURFACE BASED AS TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO RISE THROUGH
THE UPPER 80S AND LOWER 90S. STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES /7-7.5 C PER
KM/ WILL FURTHER CONTRIBUTE TO MODERATE TO VERY STRONG INSTABILITY
THIS AFTERNOON WITH MLCAPE VALUES ALREADY RANGING FROM 1500-3000
J/KG FROM MO INTO SERN IA AND SRN/CENTRAL IL. OBJECTIVE ANALYSES
INDICATED EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR INCREASING INTO THE DISCUSSION AREA
WITH FURTHER INCREASE EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1212 PM CDT MON JUN 21 2010

VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE PLAINS TO THE
MID-ATLANTIC COAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
MODEST BELT OF WESTERLIES WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE NRN THIRD OF THE
COUNTRY ON TUESDAY AS THE SUBTROPICAL HIGH EXPANDS ACROSS THE SOUTH.
A PRIMARY UPPER TROUGH...CURRENTLY OVER THE INTERMOUNTAIN
WEST...WILL EJECT ENE TOWARD THE CENTRAL/NORTHERN PLAINS BY TUESDAY
NIGHT. PRECEDING THIS SYSTEM...SEVERAL LOWER-AMPLITUDE IMPULSES
WILL MOVE FROM THE MISSOURI VALLEY INTO THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION.

...PLAINS TO THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST...
THE WAVE TRAIN OF MCS/S WILL CONTINUE OVER A BROAD AREA ALONG/N OF
AN E-W ORIENTED BAROCLINIC ZONE ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH TUESDAY.
ALTHOUGH THE TIMING OF EACH MCS AND INCIPIENT CONVECTIVE-INDUCED
IMPULSE WILL BE DIFFICULT... MODEL GUIDANCE DOES OFFER SOME
CONSISTENCY/AGREEMENT IN HIGHLIGHTING AT LEAST THREE MAIN CORRIDORS
OF SEVERE POTENTIAL...THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION...THE MIDWEST AND THE
CENTRAL PLAINS TO THE CORN BELT.

1/ MID-ATLANTIC COAST TUESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING...
THUNDERSTORMS CURRENTLY DEVELOPING ALONG THE MS RIVER IN ERN IA/WRN
IL WILL LIKELY BE ONGOING OVER THE UPPER OH VALLEY AT 12Z TUESDAY.
ZONE OF ENHANCED WARM ADVECTION ALONG THE NOSE OF A WSW LOW-LEVEL
JET WILL MAINTAIN THREAT OF STORMS THROUGH THE DAY TUESDAY
DOWNSTREAM INTO NY AND THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION. STRONGEST LOW-LEVEL
DESTABILIZATION WILL LIKELY OCCUR FROM ERN PA SWD INTO NRN/WRN VA
ALONG THE SRN FRINGE OF 40 KT MID-LEVEL FLOW. AS A RESULT...A FEW
STORMS MAY ORGANIZE ALONG RESIDUAL OUTFLOWS FROM EARLY DAY ACTIVITY
AND ALONG THE TERRAIN WITH RISKS FOR STRONG WINDS/HAIL.
SEVERE/STORM PROBABILITIES WILL WANE DURING THE EVENING AND WITH EWD
EXTENT.

2/ MIDWEST TUESDAY LATE MORNING INTO EVENING...
THUNDERSTORMS THAT DEVELOP ACROSS THE CENTRAL/NRN HIGH PLAINS IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THE UPPER-LEVEL JET STREAK APPROACHING THE REGION
TODAY WILL BE ONGOING AS AN MCS OVER THE MID-MISSOURI VALLEY EARLY
TUESDAY MORNING. AIR MASS DOWNSTREAM ACROSS ERN IA...IL AND IND IS
EXPECTED TO BECOME UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPES TO 2500 J/KG BY TUESDAY
AFTERNOON. EXPECT THAT FORWARD FLANKS OF THE MORNING ACTIVITY WILL
FLARE-UP AGAIN DURING THE MID-DAY HOURS WITH SUBSEQUENT UPSCALE
DEVELOPMENT INTO BOW ECHOES AS 45-50 KTS OF MID-LEVEL FLOW SPREADS
SEWD. ACTIVITY WILL PROBABLY REACH PARTS OF OH/NRN KY BY LATE
EVENING WITH WANING SEVERE PROBABILITIES.

3/ CENTRAL PLAINS TO THE CORN BELT TUESDAY LATE AFTERNOON/NIGHT...
COMPARATIVELY STRONGER FLOW/INSTABILITY WILL EVOLVE ACROSS THIS
REGION TUESDAY AFTERNOON/NIGHT AS PRESENCE OF VERY STEEP LAPSE
RATES/VERY MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER COMBINE WITH THE EJECTION OF THE
PRIMARY UPPER TROUGH. AIR MASS BEHIND DEPARTING MORNING STORMS WILL
HAVE NO PROBLEM RECOVERING WITH AFTERNOON MLCAPES TO 3500 J/KG
ACROSS THE CENTRAL/NRN PLAINS. INHIBITION WILL PROBABLY KEEP STORM
DEVELOPMENT SUPPRESSED UNTIL STRONG POSITIVE VORTICITY ADVECTION
OVERSPREADS THE REGION LATE IN THE AFTERNOON. STORMS WILL FIRST
DEVELOP OVER THE HIGH PLAINS OF ERN WY/SW SD AND MAY INCLUDE
HIGH-BASED SUPERCELLS WITH LARGE HAIL LATE AFTERNOON. UPSCALE
DEVELOPMENT OF AN EVENING/NIGHTTIME MCS APPEARS LIKELY OVER PARTS OF
SD AND NEB ALONG/N OF A SURGING COLD FRONT. GIVEN PRESENCE OF 55-65
KT OF WLY MID-LEVEL FLOW...MAGNITUDE OF INSTABILITY AND DEGREE OF
FORCING SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO AN ORGANIZED NIGHTTIME MCS OVER MUCH OF
SD...NEB AND POINTS EWD TO THE UPPER MS VALLEY BY 12Z WEDNESDAY.
HIGH WINDS AND HAIL CAN BE EXPECTED.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE NRN HI PLNS THROUGH
THE CNTRL/NRN PLNS INTO THE MID MS/LWR OH VLYS...

...SYNOPSIS...
UPPER LOW LIFTING NEWD ACROSS MT TODAY WITH TROUGH TRAILING BACK
ACROSS INTERMOUNTAIN REGION. CONVECTIVELY ENHANCED IMPULSES CONTINUE
TRACKING EWD ACROSS BROAD CENTRAL CONUS RIDGE WITH ONE OVER DAKOTAS
THIS AM AND ANOTHER OVER IA TIED TO WEAKENING MCS.

WHILE THE UPSLOPE HAS WEAKENED CENTRAL/NRN HIGH PLAINS SINCE
SUNDAY...STEEP LAPSE RATES AND MDT SWLY MID/UPPER FLOW CONTINUE TO
SUPPORT SCATTERED...MAINLY DIURNAL...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT
GIVEN THE AVAILABILITY OF MOISTURE/INSTABILITY.

...CENTRAL AND NRN HIGH PLAINS...
AGAIN TODAY SCATTERED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP OFF THE
HIGHER TERRAIN IN WEAK UPSLOPE FROM NERN CO TO ERN MT. STEEP LAPSE
RATES REMAIN IN PLACE AND WHILE UPSLOPE WEAKER THAN
SUNDAY...MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY MORE THAN SUFFICIENT FOR
SUPERCELLS AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING. WHILE PRIMARY THREAT WILL
BE LARGE HAIL GIVEN LAPSE RATES IN EXCESS OF 8C/KM AND MLCAPE FROM
2-3K J/KG...ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE. BOTH THE
APPROACH OF THE MT UPPER LOW IN NRN PLAINS AND PRESENCE OF THE
MID/UPPER LEVEL JET ACROSS CO WILL ENHANCE DEEP LAYER SHEAR.

STORMS ONCE AGAIN EXPECTED TO DEVELOP UPSCALE BY THIS EVENING INTO
ONE OR MORE MCS/S AS THEY MOVE EWD INTO THE HIGH PLAINS WHERE DEEPER
MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY WILL BE AVAILABLE. POTENTIAL FOR A MORE
ORGANIZED WIND DAMAGE THREAT AS STORMS CONGEAL WITH THE DEVELOPMENT
OF LARGE COLD POOLS.

ADDITIONAL SEVERE DEVELOPMENT WILL BE LIKELY ALONG AND N OF THE
CURRENT E/W OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ACROSS KS LATER THIS AFTERNOON AS IT
LIFTS BACK TOWARD THE NEB BORDER. INITIALLY SUPERCELLS WILL BE
POSSIBLE WITH LARGE HAIL AND AN ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT...AGAIN
LIKELY EVOLVING INTO A FORWARD PROPAGATING SQUALL LINE AS STORMS
CONGEAL AND DEVELOP A COLD POOL.

...MID MS TO OH VALLEY...
MCS OVER IA WITH TRAILING SQUALL LINE INTO NWRN MO WILL BE
ENCOUNTERING THE POOL OF VERY MOIST AND BECOMING QUITE UNSTABLE AIR
MASS FROM MO EWD INTO OH VALLEY. WITH STRONG HEATING...SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS WILL REDEVELOP BY EARLY AFTERNOON AS THE CONVERGENCE
ASSOCIATED WITH THE SQUALL LINE ENCOUNTERS MLCAPES OF 3-4K J/KG.
WHILE THE MDT INSTABILITY AND RATHER STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
WILL SUPPORT LARGE HAIL...PRIMARY THREAT WILL BE A MORE ORGANIZED
WIND DAMAGE CONCERN AS THE STORMS EVOLVE INTO LINES/BOWS.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1104 AM CDT MON JUN 21 2010

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN IND/SWRN OH

CONCERNING...HEAVY RAINFALL

VALID 211604Z - 211730Z

HEAVY RAINFALL RATES 1.5-2 INCHES PER HOUR...WITH LOCALLY 3+ IN/HR
RATES...EXPECTED INTO THE AFTERNOON ACROSS SERN IND AND SWRN OH AS
SEVERAL BANDS OF TSTMS TRACK ESEWD IN THE VICINITY OF A WARM FRONT.

LATE MORNING SURFACE ANALYSIS INDICATED A WARM FRONT EXTENDING FROM
CENTRAL IND ESEWD INTO SWRN AND SRN OH. AT 1545Z...AN OUTFLOW
BOUNDARY ATTENDANT TO THE TSTM COMPLEX LOCATED OVER IND INTERSECTED
THE WARM FRONT IN SERN IND IN RUSH COUNTY. DESPITE WEAK MIDLEVEL
LAPSE RATES OVER THE OH VALLEY...VERY RICH BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE
WITH SURFACE DEWPOINTS IN THE LOWER-MID 70S AND TEMPERATURES RISING
THROUGH THE MID 80S ARE RESULTING IN MODERATE INSTABILITY IN THE
WARM SECTOR. HIGH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES /GPS PW INDICATED UP TO
2 INCHES IN WRN IND/ AND DEEP WARM CLOUD PROCESSES GIVEN FREEZING
LEVEL UP TO 14 KFT WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT HEAVY RAINFALL RATE
POTENTIAL INTO THE AFTERNOON.

30 KT WNWLY LOW LEVEL JET EXTENDING FROM CENTRAL IL INTO CENTRAL IND
PER WSR-88D VADS IS RESULTING IN A WAA REGIME THAT SHOULD MAINTAIN
NEW TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE SWRN FLANK OF THE MCS...WHILE THE
MODERATE INSTABILITY SUPPORTS TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE EWD
ADVANCING OUTFLOW BOUNDARY. GIVEN THAT SEVERAL BANDS OF TSTMS WILL
TRACK ESEWD ACROSS FAR SERN IND INTO SWRN OH THROUGH AT LEAST EARLY
AFTERNOON AND CORFIDI VECTORS ARE PROGGED TO REMAIN WEAK...TRAINING
STORMS MAY ENHANCE THE HEAVY RAINFALL RATE POTENTIAL IN ANY ONE
LOCATION.
