SPC AC 111726

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1126 AM CST FRI DEC 11 2009

VALID 121200Z - 131200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
OVERALL LARGE SCALE PATTERN WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY LOW
AMPLITUDE/PROGRESSIVE OVER THE CONUS INTO SATURDAY. TSTM POTENTIAL
ACROSS PORTIONS OF CA WILL BE TIED TO A SHORTWAVE TROUGH/FRONTAL
BAND MOVING INLAND SATURDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING...WHILE SEVERAL LOW
AMPLITUDE SHORTWAVE TROUGHS CROSSING THE SOUTH CENTRAL PLAINS...AND
A NORTHWARD RETURNING MARITIME AIRMASS OVER THE GULF...WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO AT LEAST ISOLATED TSTM POTENTIAL ACROSS MUCH OF THE
GULF COAST STATES.

...NORTH CENTRAL GULF COAST...
IN RESPONSE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED SHORTWAVE TROUGH/S CROSSING THE
PLAINS...WEAK CYCLOGENESIS FROM THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO TO THE
LOWER MS RIVER VALLEY WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NORTHWARD RETURN OF A
MARINE AIRMASS/FRONT TOWARD THE GULF COAST...MAINLY TOWARD/AFTER
DARK. WHILE INCREASINGLY STRONG FLOW THROUGH THE LOW/MID TROPOSPHERE
WILL PROVIDE A FAVORABLE KINEMATIC ENVIRONMENT FOR ORGANIZED
STORMS/ROTATING UPDRAFTS...MUCH OF THE CONVECTION SHOULD REMAIN
ELEVATED ABOVE A RELATIVELY STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER PRIOR TO THE TRUE
MARINE AIRMASS APPROACHING THE COAST DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE
PERIOD. EVEN SO...PRECIPITATION FALLING INTO THE COOL BOUNDARY
LAYER...ALONG WITH WEAK CYCLOGENESIS AND A TENDENCY FOR THE PARENT
SHORTWAVE TROUGH TO DEAMPLIFY WITH TIME...SUGGEST IT WILL BE
DIFFICULT FOR THE MARINE AIRMASS TO ADVANCE APPRECIABLY INLAND.
GIVEN THESE FACTORS...NOTHING MORE THAN 5% SEVERE PROBABILITIES FOR
COASTAL AREAS APPEARS WARRANTED AT THIS TIME.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0652 AM CST FRI DEC 11 2009

VALID 111300Z - 121200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
UPR FLOW WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY ZONAL ACROSS THE LWR 48 THIS
PERIOD AS /1/ GULF OF ST LAWRENCE VORTEX CONTINUES NEWD AND /2/
UPSTREAM VORTEX OVER NRN SASKATCHEWAN ELONGATES WEST-TO-EAST.
EXPANSIVE MASS OF POLAR/ARCTIC AIR LEFT IN WAKE OF RECENT AMPLIFIED
PATTERN WILL PRECLUDE TSTM DEVELOPMENT OVER MOST OF THE NATION.
HOWEVER...SOME THREAT OF THE STORMS WILL EXIST...MAINLY IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THE SRN STREAM JET THAT WILL PERSIST FROM OFF THE
CNTRL/SRN CA CST ESE TO TX.

...WRN GULF CST/LWR MS VLY...
VORT COMPLEX NOW OFF THE CA CS...AND PERHAPS ANOTHER IMPULSE FARTHER
S W OF BAJA CA...EXPECTED TO MOVE STEADILY E/ESE THROUGH THE END OF
THE PERIOD...REACHING NE NM/W TX...RESPECTIVELY...BY 12Z SAT.
APPROACH OF THESE FEATURES SHOULD INDUCE WEAK CYCLOGENESIS ALONG
WRN END OF STALLING FRONT OVER THE CNTRL/NRN GULF OF MEXICO EARLY
SAT. STRENGTHENING WAA WILL SPREAD NEWD INTO E TX...LA...AND PARTS
OF MS ATOP DEVELOPING WARM FRONTAL SURFACE...WITH A CORRESPONDING
INCREASE IN ELEVATED MOISTURE. MOISTENING AND ISENTROPIC ASCENT
ASSOCIATED WITH BROAD 30-40 KT 850 MB SWLY FLOW SHOULD SUPPORT
SUFFICIENT DESTABILIZATION /ELEVATED MUCAPE TO 500 J PER KG/ TO
SUPPORT SCTD TSTMS...MAINLY AFTER 06Z SAT.

...CSTL CA...
LIGHTNING DATA AND WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOW PRESENCE OF STORMS/DEEP
CONVECTION IN VORT COMPLEX NOW APPROACHING PT CONCEPTION. THE VORT
COMPLEX DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE VERY WELL DEPICTED IN THE SHORT RANGE
GUIDANCE...LENDING SOME UNCERTAINTY WITH RESPECT TO TRACK OF
ASSOCIATED UVV. AT ANY RATE...EXTRAPOLATION OF CURRENT
CONVECTION...AND POTENTIAL FOR OROGRAPHIC UPLIFT GIVEN EXPECTED LOW
LVL WIND PROFILES...SUGGEST POSSIBILITY FOR A FEW EMBEDDED STORMS
LATER TODAY...MAINLY ALONG PARTS OF THE CNTRL CA CST.

...LWR GRT LKS...
LK CONVECTIVE PLUMES LIKELY WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE DAY E OF LKS
ERIE AND ONTARIO...BEFORE WEAKENING TONIGHT/EARLY SAT AS LWR
TROPOSPHERIC FLOW SUBSIDES AND BECOMES LESS UNIDIRECTIONAL.
WITHDRAWAL OF ERN CANADIAN VORTEX WILL RESULT IN A GRADUAL LOWERING
OF THE INVERSION LEVEL ACROSS REGION THROUGH THE PERIOD. WHILE AN
ISOLD LIGHTNING STRIKE OR TWO COULD OCCUR THROUGH ABOUT
MIDDAY...OVERALL POTENTIAL LOOKS TOO LOW TO WARRANT A CATEGORICAL
OTLK.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0307 AM CST FRI DEC 11 2009

VALID 141200Z - 191200Z

...DISCUSSION...

DAY 4-5

MODEL CONSENSUS IS FOR PROGRESSIVE QUASI-ZONAL UPPER FLOW TO PERSIST
DAY 4-5. GFS MAINTAINS UNIFIED NRN/SRN STREAM WHILE ECMWF EXHIBITS
SPLIT FLOW . TIMING DIFFERENCES OF INDIVIDUAL SHORTWAVES ALSO EXIST
AMONG THE MODELS. IN EITHER CASE CYCLOGENESIS IS FORECAST OVER THE
MID-UPPER MS VALLEY DAY 4 IN ASSOCIATION WITH NRN STREAM IMPULSE.
THIS FEATURE LIFTS NEWD INTO THE GREAT LAKES AND SERN CANADA LATE
DAY 4 TO DAY 5. TRAILING COLD FRONT WILL ADVANCE SEWD THROUGH THE OH
VALLEY AND SERN STATES. PARTIALLY MODIFIED GULF AIR WILL EXIST OVER
SRN HALF OF GULF STATES WHERE WEAK INSTABILITY IS EXPECTED. IT
APPEARS STRONGER MID-UPPER FLOW WILL REMAIN NORTH OF QUALITY WARM
SECTOR.

SOME THREAT FOR SEVERE WEATHER MAY EXIST WITH CONVECTION EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP ALONG AND SOUTH OF COLD FRONT ACROSS THE SERN STATES DAY 4
INTO DAY 5. AT THIS TIME TOO MUCH UNCERTAINTY EXISTS...AND THREAT
DOES NOT APPEAR SUFFICIENTLY ROBUST TO DELINEATE AN OUTLOOK AREA.

DAY 6-8

A LARGE AREA OF CP HIGH PRESSURE WILL SPREAD SEWD THROUGH THE ERN
TWO THIRDS OF THE U.S. RESULTING IN OFFSHORE FLOW AND STABLE
CONDITIONS INLAND.

BROAD TROUGH THAT IS FORECAST TO EVOLVE OVER THE WRN STATES. WEAK
RIDGING WILL PREVAIL OVER THE GULF COASTAL AREAS AND FL.

...CAROLINA COASTAL AREAS...

SURFACE RIDGE WILL RETREAT RAPIDLY OFF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD SUNDAY
MORNING WITH SLY FLOW BECOMING ESTABLISHED IN ITS WAKE OVER THE
COASTAL CAROLINAS. ONGOING CONVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH ISENTROPIC
LIFT ABOVE STABLE SURFACE LAYER WILL REINFORCE WEDGE OF COOL AIR
NEAR THE SURFACE. AS A RESULT...NWD RETREAT OF WARM FRONT WILL BE
LIMITED TO COASTAL SC/NC WHERE A SMALL WARM SECTOR COULD BRIEFLY
SPREAD INLAND. THE LOW AMPLITUDE AND PROGRESSIVE NATURE OF UPPER
TROUGH SUGGEST THAT SURFACE LOW DEVELOPMENT WILL BE TOO WEAK AND TOO
FAR EAST FOR SIGNIFICANT INLAND BOUNDARY LAYER RECOVERY.
THEREFORE...ANY SEVERE THREAT OVER THE COASTAL CAROLINAS APPEARS
LIMITED AT THIS TIME.
