MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0064

AREAS AFFECTED...EDWARDS PLATEAU...HILL COUNTRY

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 250113Z - 250245Z

THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL...ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS...AND PERHAPS A
TORNADO WILL INCREASE AS TSTM COVERAGE GROWS LATER THIS EVENING.
ALTHOUGH UNCERTAINTY EXISTS OVER THE TYPE OF WW...THE PROBABILITY OF
ISSUANCE BY 03Z IS 60 PERCENT.

01Z SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACED A SERIES OF WEAK CYCLONES ACROSS THE
PERMIAN BASIN/BIG BEND...AND ALONG THE RIO GRANDE BETWEEN DRT AND
LRD. PRIMARY SURFACE WARM FRONT HAS BECOME QUASI-STATIONARY S OF THE
HILL COUNTRY WITH A RELATIVELY RICH WARM/MOIST AIR MASS ACROSS MUCH
OF S-CNTRL TX. FARTHER NW...MORE MARGINAL SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY
EXISTS WITH A STRONG CAPPING INVERSION CENTERED NEAR 800 MB IN THE
00Z DRT RAOB. THIS CAPPING INVERSION WILL BE GRADUALLY REMOVED AS
BAND OF FORCED ASCENT /NOW CROSSING THE BIG BEND/ OVERSPREADS THE
MODIFIED WARM SECTOR OVER THE EDWARDS PLATEAU. STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE
RATES AND EFFECTIVE SHEAR OF 40-50 KT WILL PROVE FAVORABLE FOR LARGE
HAIL. WHILE A WEAKNESS IN THE LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPH MAY PERSIST
BETWEEN 800-700 MB...VEERING MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR A MARGINAL
TORNADO THREAT. HOWEVER...STRONGER LOW-LEVEL SLYS SHOULD REMAIN
CONFINED E OF THE I-35 CORRIDOR. IN ADDITION...CONVECTION-ALLOWING
MODELS LARGELY SUGGEST TSTMS WOULD QUICKLY TRANSITION INTO A CLUSTER
MODE WITH PROPAGATION TOWARDS THE NE INTO A LESS UNSTABLE AIR MASS.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 241304
SWODY1
SPC AC 241303

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0703 AM CST TUE JAN 24 2012

VALID 241300Z - 251200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF SW...S
CNTRL...AND E CNTRL TX...

...SYNOPSIS...
UPR TROUGH NOW ON THE AZ-NM BORDER EXPECTED TO CONTINUE E OR ESE
TODAY...EVOLVING INTO A CLOSED LOW OVER FAR W TX BY EVE. THE SYSTEM
SHOULD BECOME FURTHER REMOVED FROM THE MAIN BELT OF THE WLYS EARLY
WED...AND CONTINUE SLOWLY ESE TO THE TX BIG BEND.

APPROACH OF UPR SYSTEM WILL MAINTAIN/ENHANCE BROAD AREA OF LOW LVL
CYCLOGENESIS ALREADY IN PROGRESS OVER ERN NM/W TX. THIS LOW SHOULD
GRADUALLY REFORM/CONSOLIDATE SEWD ALONG OR JUST S OF THE RIO GRANDE
THROUGH THE PERIOD...MAINTAINING E TO SELY SFC FLOW OVER MUCH OF TX.
INCREASING MOISTURE...LOW LVL CONVERGENCE...AND UPLIFT IN THIS
PATTERN WILL LEAD TO FAIRLY WIDESPREAD SHOWER AND TSTM DEVELOPMENT
LATER TODAY AND TNGT OVER THE SRN PLNS...ALONG AND N OF SLOWLY
ADVANCING W-E WARM FRONT NOW OVER DEEP S TX. SOME OF THE
STORMS...ESPECIALLY THOSE OCCURRING THIS EVE THROUGH EARLY WED FROM
S CNTRL THROUGH E CNTRL TX...COULD BECOME SVR.

...TRANS PECOS/PERMIAN BASIN THROUGH S CNTRL TX/HILL COUNTRY TO THE
TX CSTL PLN TODAY THROUGH EARLY WED...
INCREASING SFC TO 850 MB MOISTURE INFLOW AND UPLIFT ALONG AND N OF
AFOREMENTIONED WARM FRONT SHOULD RESULT IN SCTD AREAS OF MAINLY
ELEVATED STORMS OVER PARTS AND CNTRL AND E TX TODAY...WITH WARM
LAYER ALOFT PROHIBITING DEVELOPMENT IN WARM SECTOR OVER S TX. WHILE
ONE OR TWO OF THE STORMS COULD BECOME STRONG...RELATIVELY MODEST
WIND FIELD AND ELEVATED NATURE OF MOST OF THE ACTIVITY SHOULD LIMIT
SVR THREAT.

A MORE SUBSTANTIAL SVR RISK MAY EVOLVE VERY LATE THIS AFTN OR...MORE
LIKELY...EARLY THIS EVE FROM ERN PARTS OF THE PERMIAN BASIN S/SE TO
THE TX BIG BEND. COMBINATION OF HEIGHT FALLS/MID LVL COOLING
ASSOCIATED WITH APPROACHING UPR LOW...AND DAYTIME HEATING...SHOULD
FOSTER STORM DEVELOPMENT ALONG N-S LEE TROUGH/DRY LINE. WIND
PROFILES AND THERMODYNAMICS COULD SUPPORT A FEW SUPERCELLS CAPABLE
OF LARGE HAIL...LOCALLY DMGG WIND...AND POSSIBLY A COUPLE TORNADOES.

THE DRY LINE/LEE TROUGH STORMS SHOULD INCREASE IN COVERAGE THROUGH
EARLY WED AS UPR SYSTEM CONTINUES EWD. THE STORMS LIKELY WILL
EVOLVE INTO AN EXTENSIVE...LOOSELY-ORGANIZED SSW-NNE SQLN.
INCREASING...NEARLY MERIDIONAL 50-70 KT MID AND UPR LVL
FLOW...STRENGTHENING UPR DIVERGENCE...AND CONTINUED INFLOW OF VERY
MOIST AIR /PW AOA 1.50 INCHES/...WILL ENCOURAGE DEVELOPMENT OF
EMBEDDED LEWPS AND ROTATING STORMS. AT THE SAME TIME...PERSISTENT
ELY COMPONENT TO THE NEAR-SFC WINDS MAY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF

SPC AC 241258

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0658 AM CST TUE JAN 24 2012

ELY COMPONENT TO THE NEAR-SFC WINDS MAY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF
LOW-LVL MESOCYCLONES. THIS ACTIVITY COULD YIELD AN INCREASING RISK
FOR DMGG WIND AND TORNADOES...IN ADDITION TO HEAVY RAIN...THROUGH
12Z WED.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0345 AM CST TUE JAN 24 2012

VALID 271200Z - 011200Z

...DISCUSSION...
MODELS IN DECENT AGREEMENT TO START THE MEDIUM-RANGE PERIOD...WITH
THE GFS AND ECMWF MOVING A COLD FRONT OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST EARLY
IN THE DAY 4 /FRI. 1-27/ TIME PERIOD. WHILE A LIMITED SEVERE THREAT
COULD EXIST AHEAD OF THIS FRONT UNTIL IT MOVES OFFSHORE...DEGREE OF
THREAT DOES NOT APPEAR TO WARRANT AN OUTLOOK AREA ATTM.

IN THE WAKE OF THIS FRONT...A LARGE AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE IS PROGGED
TO SLOWLY SAG SWD INTO THE CENTRAL AND ERN CONUS. THE RESULTING
COOLER/DRIER CONTINENTAL AIRMASS SUGGESTS LITTLE IN THE WAY OF DEEP
CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL.

SOME MODEL DIFFERENCES BEGIN TO EMERGE DAY 6 /SUN. 1-29/...AS
VARIOUS SMALL-SCALE DISTURBANCES CROSS THE CENTRAL U.S. DRIVING WEAK
CYCLOGENESIS. HOWEVER...DISPARITY WITH RESPECT TO TIMING AND
LOCATION OF THESE FEATURES -- AND THE OVERALL PREDOMINANCE OF
SURFACE RIDGING ACROSS THE GULF WHICH WOULD HINDER APPRECIABLE
MOISTURE RETURN IN ANY CASE -- SUGGEST THAT SEVERE WEATHER IS
UNLIKELY THROUGH THE LATTER PORTIONS OF THE PERIOD.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

VALID 261200Z - 271200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL GULF COAST
REGION...

...SYNOPSIS...
A MID-LEVEL LOW OVER E TX AT THE START OF THE PERIOD IS FORECAST TO
BEGIN EVOLVING INTO A MORE "OPEN" WAVE AND TO ACCELERATE EWD...AS IT
PHASES WITH A TROUGH IN THE NRN STREAM. AS THIS OPENING SYSTEM
CROSSES THE SOUTHEAST...AN ACCOMPANYING SURFACE LOW/COLD FRONT WILL
ALSO CROSS THE CENTRAL GULF COAST REGION...REACHING A POSITION E OF
THE APPALACHIANS BY THE END OF THE PERIOD.

...CENTRAL GULF COAST REGION/SOUTHEAST STATES...
WIDESPREAD/LOCALLY STRONG CONVECTION SHOULD BE ONGOING AT THE START
OF THE PERIOD INVOF LA AND VICINITY...WITH ELEVATED CONVECTION
SPREADING WELL N ACROSS THE TN VALLEY/MID SOUTH REGION. AS A NEW
SURFACE LOW REDEVELOPS OVER THE CENTRAL GULF COAST
STATES...COMBINATION OF A MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER ADVECTING NWD FROM
THE GULF AND SHEAR SUPPORTIVE OF ROTATING UPDRAFTS SUGGESTS THAT
EPISODES/BANDS OF STORMS WILL MOVE ACROSS THE CENTRAL GULF COAST
STATES THROUGH THE DAY...AND POSSIBLY INTO THE SRN APPALACHIANS
REGION OVERNIGHT...ACCOMPANIED BY THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY DAMAGING
WINDS AND ISOLATED TORNADOES. WHILE SOMEWHAT LIMITED BY WEAK LAPSE
RATES ALOFT/MARGINAL CAPE...THREAT APPEARS SUFFICIENT TO WARRANT
INTRODUCTION OF A SLIGHT RISK AREA ACROSS THE CENTRAL GULF COAST
REGION.

SPC AC 240707

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0107 AM CST TUE JAN 24 2012

VALID 251200Z - 261200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF E TX AND INTO
LA...

...SYNOPSIS...
WHILE FAST/GENERALLY WLY FLOW WILL PREVAIL ACROSS THE NRN THIRD OF
THE CONUS...THE SRN 2/3 OF THE COUNTRY WILL CONTINUE TO BE AFFECTED
BY LARGE-SCALE RIDGING ACROSS BOTH THE SWRN AND SERN STATES -- ON
EITHER SIDE OF A FAIRLY SLOW-MOVING UPPER LOW OVER THE SRN PLAINS.
THIS LOW -- INITIALLY CENTERED INVOF W TX -- WILL REACH EAST TX BY
THE END OF THE PERIOD.

AT THE SURFACE...A WEAK LOW INITIALLY PROGGED TO RESIDE INVOF S TX
SHOULD MARCH SLOWLY NNEWD ALONG THE TX COASTAL PLAIN WITH TIME.
OVERNIGHT...THE LOW IS EXPECTED TO CROSS THE SABINE RIVER
VALLEY...REACHING A POSITION INVOF AR BY 26/12 AS THE TRAILING COLD
FRONT CONTINUES OFFSHORE INTO THE WRN GULF.

...E TX AND THE MIDDLE AND UPPER TX COAST INTO LA...
SELY/SLY FEED OF LOW-LEVEL WRN GULF MOISTURE WILL CONTINUE THIS
PERIOD INTO E TX AND THE WRN GULF COAST REGION...AS THE UPPER LOW
PROGRESSES STEADILY ACROSS TX AND THE ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW SHIFTS
NWD ACROSS ERN TX. STORMS -- AND ASSOCIATED/ISOLATED SEVERE
POTENTIAL -- WILL BE ONGOING ACROSS PARTS OF ERN TX AT THE START OF
THE PERIOD...AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY -- SHIFTING EWD WITH
TIME. OVERNIGHT...SHOWERS AND STORMS WILL SHIFT ACROSS AR/LA TOWARD
THE MID AND LOWER MS VALLEYS AS THE LOW DEVELOPS NWD ALONG WITH THE
ACCOMPANYING WARM SECTOR.

AS 40 TO 60 KT SSWLYS AT MID LEVELS SPREAD EWD ATOP THE SURFACE WARM
SECTOR AND SLY/SELY FLOW THEREIN...SHEAR WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF
ORGANIZED/SUPERCELL STORMS. WHILE CONVECTION ON THE NRN FRINGE OF
THE REGION WILL LIKELY REMAIN SLIGHTLY ELEVATED...SURFACE-BASED
STORMS -- CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS AND ISOLATED
TORNADOES -- ARE EXPECTED ACROSS E TX AND INTO LA...AND THUS
INCLUSION OF SLIGHT RISK/15% SEVERE PROBABILITY WILL BE ADDED THIS
FORECAST. THE THREAT SHOULD CONTINUE THROUGH THE END OF THE
PERIOD...APPROACHING THE MID/LOWER MS VALLEY REGION LATE.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 240555
SWODY1
SPC AC 240553

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1153 PM CST MON JAN 23 2012

VALID 241200Z - 251200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF WCNTRL TX...THE
TX HILL COUNTRY AND MIDDLE TX COAST...

...WCNTRL TX/HILL COUNTRY/MIDDLE TX COAST...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH EXTENDING SWD FROM THE FOUR CORNERS INTO NRN
MEXICO...WILL CLOSE-OFF AND MOVE INTO FAR WEST TX TODAY. AHEAD OF
THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW...A 35 TO 45 KT LOW-LEVEL JET ACROSS CNTRL TX
WILL RESULT IN MOISTURE ADVECTION ACROSS MUCH OF THE SRN HALF OF TX.
BY LATE AFTERNOON...A MOIST AXIS WILL BE IN PLACE FROM WCNTRL TX
WHERE SFC DEWPOINTS SHOULD BE AROUND 50 F TO AROUND 65 F ALONG THE
TX COAST. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WILL BE POSSIBLE THIS
AFTERNOON ACROSS MUCH OF THE WARM SECTOR DUE TO SFC HEATING AND LIFT
ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOW-LEVEL JET. BY LATE AFTERNOON...MODEL
FORECASTS SHOW POCKETS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY IN PLACE FROM EAST OF
MIDLAND SEWD TO SOUTH OF SAN ANTONIO ALONG WITH 50 TO 60 KT 0-6 KM
SHEAR. THIS ENVIRONMENT SHOULD SUPPORT A THREAT FOR WIND DAMAGE AND
HAIL WITH THE STORMS THAT DEVELOP CLOSER TO THE INSTABILITY AXIS. A
SUPERCELL THREAT MAY ALSO DEVELOP WEST OF THE LOW-LEVEL JET FROM
AROUND DEL RIO NORTH TO NEAR SAN ANGELO WHERE MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES
WILL BE STEEPER AND THE COMBINATION OF INSTABILITY AND DEEP LAYER
SHEAR IS FORECAST TO BE MAXIMIZED. A COUPLE TORNADOES AND ISOLATED
LARGE HAIL COULD OCCUR WITH STORMS THAT REMAIN DISCRETE AND BECOME
INTENSE LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY EVENING.

AS THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW APPROACHES WEST TX DURING THE
EVENING...CONVECTIVE COVERAGE SHOULD MARKEDLY INCREASE ALONG THE
LEADING EDGE OF LARGE-SCALE ASCENT WITH A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS
ORGANIZING FROM NCNTRL TX SSWWD INTO SW TX. THIS TRANSITION TO A
LINEAR MCS SHOULD KEEP A WIND DAMAGE THREAT GOING THROUGH MUCH OF
THE NIGHT. MODEL FORECASTS TIME THE LINE SEWD ACROSS THE TX HILL
COUNTRY AROUND MIDNIGHT AND ONTO THE TX COASTAL PLAIN LATE IN THE
PERIOD. SHEAR PROFILES ARE FORECAST TO BE SOMEWHAT WEAKER ACROSS THE
TX COASTAL PLAIN IN THE 06Z TO 12Z TIMEFRAME SUGGESTING THE SEVERE
THREAT MAY BECOME MARGINAL LATE IN THE PERIOD.
