SPC AC 090435

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1035 PM CST WED DEC 08 2010

VALID 091200Z - 101200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
AN UPPER TROUGH ALONG THE ERN SEABOARD WILL SHIFT EWD OVER THE WRN
ATLANTIC OCEAN. IN ITS WAKE...LOW-AMPLITUDE FLOW WILL OVERSPREAD
MUCH OF THE CONUS.

GENERALLY QUIESCENT WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MOST OF
THE COUNTRY TODAY AS MAINLY STABLE/DRY AIR MASSES PREVAIL. ONE
EXCEPTION WILL BE ACROSS PARTS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WHERE A
STRONG MID/UPPER LEVEL JET WILL CONTINUE TO STREAM ONSHORE. MOIST
ONSHORE FLOW ALONG WITH OROGRAPHIC LIFT /NWRN OREGON AND WRN
WASHINGTON COASTS/ WILL COMBINE WITH LIMITED BUT SUFFICIENT
INSTABILITY /LESS THAN 500 J/KG MUCAPE/ AND COLD MID LEVEL TEMPS TO
PRODUCE A FEW/SCATTERED EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS.

THE OTHER EXCEPTION MAY BE NEAR THE E COAST OF FLORIDA.
THUNDERSTORMS MAY DEVELOP IN AN AREA OF WEAK CYCLOGENESIS RELATED TO
THE PASSAGE OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL TROUGH. HOWEVER...THE BULK OF
THIS ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN WELL OFFSHORE.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 111200Z - 161200Z

...DISCUSSION...
MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE THAT A LARGE UPPER TROUGH WILL AMPLIFY
ACROSS THE CNTRL U.S. INTO THE MS VALLEY BY SUN MORNING. WHILE SOME
TIMING DIFFERENCES EXIST...CONSENSUS IS FOR A SURFACE LOW TO DEEPEN
AS IT TRANSLATES FROM THE SRN PLAINS INTO MID MS VALLEY BY
00Z...QUICKLY MOVING INTO THE OH VALLEY BY SUN MORNING. THE MAIN
LIMITING FACTOR TO THIS POTENTIAL SEVERE EVENT CONTINUES TO BE
MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY LEVELS.

AN AREA OF RAIN...PERHAPS WITH EMBEDDED ELEVATED THUNDER...IS LIKELY
TO BE ONGOING ACROSS THE OZARKS INTO THE MID MS VALLEY SAT MORNING
ON THE NOSE OF A 30+ KT LOW LEVEL JET. SWLY LOW LEVEL FLOW WILL
PERSIST DURING THE DAY AHEAD OF A RAPIDLY MOVING COLD FRONT WHICH
SHOULD LIE ROUGHLY ALONG THE MS RIVER FROM AR/TN SWD INTO LA AT 00Z
SUN. AT LEAST MID TO UPPER 50S F DEWPOINTS SHOULD ADVECT NWD ACROSS
LA AND MS DURING THE DAY. RELATIVELY COOL BOUNDARY LAYER
TEMPERATURES WILL LIMIT DESTABILIZATION WITH RELATIVELY POOR LOW TO
MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES EXPECTED. WITH RAPIDLY VEERING WIND
FIELDS...AND CAPPING AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT...MOST OF THE
CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL SHOULD BE IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE COLD FRONT
AND/OR WARM FRONT INTERSECTION WHERE FORCING WILL BE MAXIMIZED.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS APPEARS TO BE THE MOST PROBABLE SEVERE
THREAT...BUT OVERALL EVENT POTENTIAL IS TOO LOW FOR ANY AREAS THIS
FAR OUT.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0105 AM CST WED DEC 08 2010

VALID 101200Z - 111200Z

...SYNOPSIS...
A MAJOR CHANGE TO THE PATTERN WILL BEGIN ON FRIDAY AS A POWERFUL
UPPER LEVEL JET STREAK DIVES SEWD ACROSS THE FOUR CORNERS AND INTO
THE SERN PLAINS BY 12Z SAT. IN RESPONSE TO THIS DIGGING TROUGH...LOW
PRESSURE WILL FORM OVER THE SRN PLAINS WITH SLY RETURN FLOW
INCREASING OVER THE WRN GULF OF MEXICO. HOWEVER..GIVEN AN EXISTING
SURFACE RIDGE EXTENDING SWWD INTO THE CENTRAL GULF OF
MEXICO...BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE QUALITY WILL BE POOR.

ISENTROPIC LIFT WILL INCREASE ON THE NOSE OF A 30+ KT LOW LEVEL JET
ACROSS THE OZARKS FRI NIGHT INTO SAT MORNING...BUT NAM/NAMKF AND GFS
FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE LITTLE INSTABILITY FOR
THUNDERSTORMS...ALTHOUGH RAIN WILL BE LIKELY.

WILL OPT TO NOT INTRODUCE ANY THUNDER AREAS AT THIS TIME AS THE
THREAT APPEARS TOO ISOLATED AND CLOSE TO THE VERY END OF THE DAY 3
PERIOD.

1233 AM CST WED DEC 08 2010

VALID 091200Z - 101200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A PHASED PAIR OF UPPER TROUGHS FROM QUEBEC INTO THE SERN U.S. WILL
CONTINUE EWD INTO THE ATLANTIC BY EVENING. BEHIND THESE
TROUGHS...ANOTHER SHORTWAVE WILL MOVE ESEWD ACROSS THE NRN PLAINS
AND INTO THE GREAT LAKES BY 12Z FRI. AS A RESULT...RELATIVELY COOL
AND DRY WEATHER WILL PREVAIL FROM THE MIDWEST INTO THE ERN STATES
WITH HIGH PRESSURE AT THE SURFACE.

MEANWHILE...STRONG WNWLY FLOW ALOFT WILL STRETCH FROM THE PACIFIC
INTO THE WRN STATES WITH A STRONG UPPER JET MAX NOSING INTO THE
PACIFIC NW BY 00Z. RELATIVELY COOL MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES ON THE
CYCLONIC SIDE OF THIS JET WILL RESULT IN STEEP LOW/MID LEVEL LAPSE
RATES AND WEAK INSTABILITY FOR A FEW THUNDERSTORMS MAINLY COASTAL
WA/ORE. THESE STORMS MAY BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING GRAUPEL.

...PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST...
CURRENT WATER VAPOR SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATED A SHORTWAVE TROUGH
TRACKING NEWD TOWARD THE PACIFIC NW COAST...WITH OBSERVATIONAL
TRENDS AND LATEST MODELS SUGGESTING THIS FEATURE SHOULD REACH THE
COAST BY 12Z TODAY AND THEN PROCEED INLAND. TUESDAY EVENING OCEANIC
LIGHTNING DATA SHOWED A CLUSTER OF STRIKES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS
SHORTWAVE TROUGH...CURRENTLY LOCATED NEAR 41N/132W. COOLING
LOWER-MID TROPOSPHERIC PROFILES /E.G. -26 TO -28 C AT 500 MB/...
ALONG AND NORTH OF STRONG WSWLY MID-UPPER LEVEL FLOW...WILL ALLOW
LAPSE RATES TO STEEPEN ALONG THE WA/ORE COAST INTO THE AFTERNOON.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST ADEQUATE MUCAPE /100-200 J PER KG/ IN THE
LOWEST 5-6KM FOR CONVECTIVE UPDRAFTS TO BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING AT
LEAST ISOLATED LIGHTNING.
