DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 230100
SWODY1
SPC AC 230058

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0758 PM CDT WED APR 22 2009

VALID 230100Z - 231200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS SMALL PORTION OF SRN KS...

...SYNOPSIS...
UPPER AIR PATTERN REMAINS CHARACTERIZED BY RELATIVELY HIGHLY
AMPLIFIED NRN STREAM INVOF CANADIAN BORDER...AND SRN STREAM WITH
SEVERAL WEAK/EMBEDDED SHORTWAVE TROUGHS. HEIGHT FALLS ARE FCST
THROUGH REMAINDER PERIOD AS DEEP/BROAD UPPER CYCLONE MOVED FROM
MID-ATLANTIC REGION TO NEW ENGLAND. MEANWHILE POSITIVELY TILTED
TROUGH WILL MOVE EWD FROM PRESENT POSITION OVER N-CENTRAL AB...SWRN
BC AND PACIFIC WATERS OFFSHORE WA/ORE. SMALL BUT WELL-DEFINED SRN
STREAM PERTURBATION -- NOW EVIDENT IN MOISTURE CHANNEL IMAGERY OVER
SWRN KS -- SHOULD MOVE EWD TO ESEWD VICINITY KS/OK BORDER THROUGH
REMAINDER PERIOD. MEANWHILE....BROADER BUT FAIRLY WEAK UPPER LOW
WILL MOVE FROM SERN CA TO WRN AZ.

AT SFC...COMPLEX PATTERN OF OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES AND WARM FRONT PASSES
THROUGH OR VERY NEAR LOW LOCATED OVER SWRN KS. DIFFUSE WARM FRONT
IS DRAWN ESEWD ACROSS NERN OK...AND SHOULD LIFT NWD ACROSS KS/OK
LINE OVERNIGHT AS LOW MOVES SLOWLY EWD.

...KS...
TWO PRIMARY OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES ARC FROM KIOWA-MEADE-HASKELL/FINNEY
COUNTIES KS AS OF 00Z...EXPANDING RADIALLY. THIS BOUNDARY SHOULD
DECELERATE THROUGH SUNSET EXCEPT INVOF CONVECTION NEAR ITS ERN
SEGMENT...AND IS BEING OVERTAKEN BY NEXT OUTFLOW OVER FINNEY COUNTY.
ANOTHER OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WAS MOVING SEWD ACROSS NESS/FINNEY/KEARNY
COUNTIES...FROM HIGH-BASED ACTIVITY IN NWRN KS. WIDELY SCATTERED
TSTMS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING DURING PAST FEW HOURS INVOF SFC LOW AND
ALONG AND N OF OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES...WITH INTERMITTENT SVR HAIL OVER
A SMALL PART OF SWRN KS. OUTFLOW INTERSECTIONS SHOULD HELP TO
SUSTAIN POTENTIAL FOR NEAR SFC-BASED CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT FOR
ANOTHER HOUR OR TWO...BEFORE BOUNDARY LAYER DECOUPLES IN WARM SECTOR
AND LLJ STRENGTHENS APPRECIABLY. CONVECTION SHOULD INCREASE IN
COVERAGE DURING REMAINDER EVENING...BOOSTING HAIL RISK SOMEWHAT.

LLJ AND ACCOMPANYING REGIME OF MAXIMIZED LOW LEVEL WAA AND MOISTURE
TRANSPORT -- WITH MRGL BUT ADEQUATE MOISTURE CONTENT -- WILL SUPPORT
PARCELS BEING RAISED ISENTROPICALLY TO LFC. THROUGH ABOUT
04Z-06Z...THIS REGIME SHOULD SHIFT EWD/NEWD SLIGHTLY...NEARLY
JUXTAPOSED WITH MAXIMUM COOLING ALOFT ASSOCIATED WITH MID-UPPER
PERTURBATION. TROUGH ALOFT THEN SHOULD CONTINUE TO MOVE E WHILE LOW
LEVEL INSTABILITY WEAKENS.

IN ADDITION TO ONGOING HAIL RISK...CONDITIONAL AND BRIEF TORNADO
POTENTIAL MAY EXIST FOR ANY STORM REMAINING ALONG ERN SEGMENT OF
LEADING OUTFLOW BOUNDARY. THAT ENVIRONMENT WILL REMAIN
CHARACTERIZED BY RELATIVELY MAXIMIZED BOUNDARY LAYER
VORTICITY...BACKED SFC WINDS ENHANCED 0-1 KM AGL HODOGRAPHS...AND
LCL LOWERS BECAUSE OF LOSS OF STG SFC HEATING/MIXING.
HOWEVER...OFFSETTING FACTORS INCLUDE THAT SAME COOLING TENDENCY --
WHICH WILL LEAD TO CONSIDERABLE STRENGTHENING OF SBCINH IN NEXT 2-3
HOURS...AS WELL AS RELATIVELY WEAK MID-UPPER WINDS RESULTING IN
ADVERSE STORM-SCALE PRECIP DISTRIBUTION AND LIMITED EFFECTIVE SHEAR.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 221255
SWODY1
SPC AC 221252

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0752 AM CDT WED APR 22 2009

VALID 221300Z - 231200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A DEEP TROUGH OVER THE OH VALLEY WILL MOVE EWD OVER NEW ENGLAND AS
AN EMBEDDED SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER NC ROTATES NEWD OFF THE SE NEW
ENGLAND COAST. IN THE WAKE OF THE ERN TROUGH AND IN CONJUNCTION
WITH RISING HEIGHTS...A BAROCLINIC ZONE WILL LIFT SLOWLY NWD ACROSS
THE GULF COAST AND SRN PLAINS TO THE E/SE OF A LEE CYCLONE OVER THE
TX PANHANDLE. THE LEE CYCLONE WILL FORM AT LEAST PARTIALLY IN
RESPONSE TO A WEAK MID LEVEL TROUGH IN THE SRN STREAM WHICH WILL
PROGRESS EWD FROM CO TO KS...WHILE A SEPARATE UPSTREAM TROUGH MOVES
EWD FROM SRN CA TO SRN AZ. ANOTHER LARGER SCALE NRN STREAM TROUGH
WILL DIG ESEWD OVER THE PAC NW TOWARD THE NRN ROCKIES LATE IN THE
PERIOD.

LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE IS SOMEWHAT MARGINAL/LIMITED ACROSS THE MAJORITY
OF THE CONUS IN THE WAKE OF THE DEEP ERN TROUGH AND MULTIPLE FRONTAL
INTRUSIONS. HOWEVER...A SHALLOW MARINE LAYER IS RETURNING NWD/NEWD
ACROSS THE NW AND N CENTRAL GULF COAST...ALONG AND S OF THE
SLOW-MOVING FRONT. MEANWHILE...A VERY BROAD PLUME OF STEEP MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES /ORIGINATING AS DEEP MIXED LAYERS OVER THE
INTERMOUNTAIN WEST/ WILL OVERSPREAD THE PLAINS TO THE MS VALLEY.
THE COMBINATION OF THE STEEP LAPSE RATES...MARGINAL MOISTURE..AND
STRONG SURFACE HEATING WILL SUPPORT A BROAD AREA OF THUNDERSTORM
POTENTIAL THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING FROM THE GREAT BASIN INTO THE
CENTRAL/NRN ROCKIES. THE STORMS SHOULD BE HIGH-BASED AND RATHER
ISOLATED IN COVERAGE...AND FOCUSED PRIMARILY BY LOCAL OROGRAPHY IN
PROXIMITY TO THE ZONES OF ASCENT NEAR AND DOWNSTREAM FROM THE
DIGGING TROUGH OVER THE PAC NW...AND THE WEAK WAVE OVER CO.

...PLAINS AREA LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT...
STRONG SURFACE HEATING/MIXING AND BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS IN THE
40S MAY SUPPORT THE FORMATION OF ISOLATED HIGH-BASED STORMS INVOF
THE LEE TROUGH/CYCLONE AND RETURNING WARM FRONT ACROSS THE CENTRAL
HIGH PLAINS. THESE STORMS MAY PRODUCE STRONG OUTFLOW WINDS AND
MAINLY SMALL HAIL THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY TONIGHT ACROSS NE CO/SW
NEB/NRN KS. FARTHER SE... A GRADUAL INCREASE IN LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE
THROUGH ADVECTION AND EVAPOTRANSPIRATION WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MODERATE
INSTABILITY DEVELOPING ALONG THE WARM FRONT FROM OK INTO AR BY LATE
AFTERNOON. HOWEVER...SURFACE HEATING/MIXING ALONE APPEARS
INSUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT ACROSS
THIS AREA. THE SOMEWHAT GREATER CHANCE FOR STORM FORMATION WILL BE
LATER TONIGHT IN A STRENGTHENING WAA REGIME ON THE NOSE OF THE
LLJ...WHICH WILL EXTEND AS FAR N AS KS OVERNIGHT. A SEPARATE LLJ
AND ZONE OF WAA MAY ALSO SUPPORT ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS LATE TONIGHT
AS FAR NE AS SRN MN/NRN IA.

...OH AREA BY EARLY-MID AFTERNOON...
VERY COLD MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES /-30 C AT 500 MB/ WILL OVERSPREAD
THE OH AREA DURING THE DAY IN ASSOCIATION WITH PASSAGE OF THE LARGE
SCALE TROUGH AXIS. THE COLD TEMPERATURES AND SURFACE HEATING WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY FOR CONVECTION AND A FEW
LIGHTNING STRIKES. HOWEVER...VERY LIMITED MOISTURE /BOUNDARY LAYER
DEWPOINTS IN THE LOW 30S/ AND WEAK INSTABILITY SUGGEST THAT THE
PROBABILITY OF SEVERE HAIL WILL BE TOO SMALL TO WARRANT AN OUTLOOK
AREA.

...SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE FROM PARTS OF THE CENTRAL PLAINS THRU THE
UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY THIS WEEKEND...

CONSIDERABLE SPREAD PERSISTS AMONG THE MEDIUM RANGE MODELS...
INCLUDING THE MREF...REGARDING THE SHORT WAVE DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN
THE PREVAILING SPLIT UPPER FLOW PATTERN THROUGH THIS FORECAST
PERIOD. BUT...REASONABLE ENOUGH AGREEMENT APPEARS TO EXIST
CONCERNING THE EMERGENCE OF ONE SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE IMPULSE FROM
THE AMPLIFIED SOUTHERN BRANCH TROUGH OVER THE WESTERN STATES THIS
WEEKEND. THIS IS EXPECTED TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE NORTHEASTWARD
MIGRATION OF A SIGNIFICANT FRONTAL WAVE ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS
LATE SATURDAY/SATURDAY NIGHT...INTO AND THROUGH THE UPPER
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY/UPPER GREAT LAKES REGION SUNDAY/SUNDAY NIGHT.
GIVEN THAT THIS APPEARS LIKELY TO BE PRECEDED BY A SUBSTANTIVE GULF
RETURN FLOW BENEATH VERY STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES...ASSOCIATED
MODERATE INSTABILITY IN THE PRESENCE OF STRONG SHEAR AND LARGE-SCALE
FORCING FOR UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION WILL BE QUITE FAVORABLE FOR
SEVERE STORMS...INCLUDING DISCRETE SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT...AND THE
POSSIBLE EVOLUTION OF ONE OR MORE SEVERE MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE
SYSTEMS.

VALID 241200Z - 251200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FRI AFTN/FRI NIGHT ACROSS PARTS
OF THE MID MISSOURI/UPR MS VALLEYS....

...SYNOPSIS...
THE SPREAD AMONG MODEL DATA REMAINS LARGE CONCERNING SHORT WAVE
DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN THE PREVAILING SPLIT UPPER FLOW. BUT...
GUIDANCE...IN GENERAL...SUGGESTS THAT THE AMPLIFICATION OF A TROUGH
WITHIN THE SOUTHERN BRANCH...ACROSS THE WESTERN U.S. WILL CONTINUE
THROUGH THIS FORECAST PERIOD. AT THE SAME TIME...ANOTHER VIGOROUS
SHORT WAVE IMPULSE WITHIN THE NORTHERN STREAM IS PROGGED TO TURN
EAST OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES...THEN LIFT THROUGH THE CENTRAL
CANADIAN PROVINCES BY LATE FRIDAY/FRIDAY NIGHT. IT APPEARS THAT
COUPLED UPPER JET STREAKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TWO FEATURES WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO AN INCREASINGLY DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW FIELD ACROSS
PARTS OF THE NORTHERN PLAINS INTO THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE PERIOD. THIS COULD CONTRIBUTE TO
STRENGTHENING FORCING FOR UPWARD VERTICAL MOTION AS FAR SOUTH AS A
STALLING OR SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT ACROSS THE MID MISSOURI VALLEY.

...CNTRL PLAINS INTO THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...
THE SLOW MOVING FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
THROUGH THE MID MISSOURI VALLEY AND NORTH CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS... AND
PERHAPS A DRY LINE EXTENDING SOUTH OF THE FRONT THROUGH THE CENTRAL
PLAINS...APPEAR TO PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR INTENSE CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT. MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ASSOCIATED WITH A CAPPING
ELEVATED MIXED LAYER EMANATING FROM THE PLATEAU REGION ARE PROGGED
TO BE VERY STEEP...ON THE ORDER OF 8-9 DEG C...ACROSS MUCH OF THE
PLAINS INTO THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. AND...THIS WILL LIKELY
CONTRIBUTE TO AT LEAST MODERATE POTENTIAL INSTABILITY AS A
SUBSTANTIVE GULF MOISTURE RETURN ADVECTS IN A TONGUE EAST OF THE DRY
LINE INTO THE VICINITY OF THE FRONT. MIXED LAYER CAPE MAY EXCEED
2000 J/KG SHORTLY AFTER PEAK HEATING...IN THE PRESENCE OF SIZABLE
CLOCKWISE CURVED LOW-LEVEL HODOGRAPHS AND AT LEAST MODERATE DEEP
LAYER SHEAR.

FORCING TO BREAK CAP DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON IS STILL
UNCERTAIN...BUT CONVECTIVE TEMPERATURES MAY BE APPROACHED OR
EXCEEDED ON THE NOSE OF A PRE-FRONTAL THERMAL RIDGE EMANATING FROM
THE HIGH PLAINS...ACROSS SOUTHERN/EASTERN NEBRASKA. THIS... COUPLED
WITH A CONFLUENT LOW-LEVEL FLOW INTO THE VICINITY OF THE
FRONT...ACROSS EASTERN NEBRASKA/WESTERN IOWA...MAY BE SUFFICIENT TO
SUPPORT THE INITIATION OF DISCRETE STORMS IN AN ENVIRONMENT
FAVORABLE FOR SUPERCELLS. GIVEN THE WIND PROFILES...IF THIS
OCCURS...THE RISK FOR VERY LARGE HAIL AND LOCALIZED DAMAGING WIND
GUSTS PROBABLY WILL BE THE PRIMARY THREATS...BUT ISOLATED TORNADOES
WILL BE POSSIBLE.

INTO THE EVENING HOURS...ON THE NOSE OF A SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET
STRENGTHENING FROM 30-50 KTS...TO IN EXCESS OF 50 KTS...FORCING MAY
SUPPORT THE UPSCALE GROWTH OF A STRONG/SEVERE MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE
SYSTEM...PERHAPS AIDED BY STRENGTHENING DIVERGENCE ALOFT. AS THIS
OCCURS...THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WILL INCREASE...WITH
THE THREAT FOR LARGE HAIL ALSO CONTINUING... AS THE ENVIRONMENT
FAVORS BOTH A FORWARD PROPAGATING AND BACK BUILDING COMPONENT.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1249 AM CDT WED APR 22 2009

VALID 231200Z - 241200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
WITHIN THE PREVAILING SPLIT UPPER FLOW...MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE
THAT BROAD UPPER TROUGHING WILL BEGIN TO EVOLVE ACROSS THE WESTERN
U.S. DURING THIS FORECAST PERIOD. THIS APPEARS LIKELY TO OCCUR AS
THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF A SPLITTING NORTHERN BRANCH TROUGH CONTINUES
TO SLOWLY DIG ACROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST/NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN
REGION AND NORTHERN GREAT BASIN. AS THE NORTHERN PORTION LIFTS
ACROSS THE CENTRAL CANADIAN PROVINCES...TO THE SOUTH OF A VORTEX
NEAR NORTHERN HUDSON BAY...AND A SOUTHERN BRANCH TROUGH PROGRESSES
ACROSS THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES/PLAINS...UPPER RIDGING IS PROGGED TO
BUILD WITHIN THE TWO STREAMS...ACROSS MOST AREAS EAST OF THE
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THIS EVOLVING PATTERN...A SOUTHWESTERLY
LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC FLOW DEVELOPING OFF THE PLATEAU/ROCKIES IS
EXPECTED TO ADVECT INCREASINGLY WARM ELEVATED MIXED LAYER AIR ACROSS
MUCH OF THE PLAINS AND MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...PERHAPS AS FAR EAST AS
THE APPALACHIANS. THIS WILL LIKELY CAP AN INCREASINGLY MOIST GULF
RETURN FLOW ACROSS PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. THE MORE
SIGNIFICANT LOW-LEVEL MOISTENING MAY NOT REACH CENTRAL/ SOUTHEAST
TEXAS AND THE LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY UNTIL LATE THURSDAY
NIGHT/EARLY FRIDAY. AND...THIS STILL SEEMS LIKELY TO LIMIT
CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL ACROSS MOST AREAS EAST OF THE ROCKIES...WHILE
MOISTURE VALUES ALSO REMAIN RATHER LOW ACROSS MUCH OF THE
INTERMOUNTAIN WEST AND ROCKIES.

...UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...
DESPITE THE LACK OF GULF MOISTURE RETURN...MOISTENING IS CURRENTLY
EVIDENT IN GOES BLENDED TOTAL PRECIPITABLE WATER IMAGERY...ALONG A
LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC BAROCLINIC ZONE...IN THE WAKE OF THE LARGE
SCALE TROUGH NOW BEGINNING TO DEAMPLIFY AND LIFT OUT OF THE EASTERN
STATES. THIS PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE NCEP SREF...WHICH INDICATES
PRECIPITABLE WATER ON THE ORDER OF .5-1.0 INCH RETURNING TO THE
VICINITY OF A COLD FRONT ADVANCING SOUTHEASTWARD INTO THE REGION
DURING THE DAY THURSDAY.

STRONGEST DESTABILIZATION DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS STILL APPEARS
LIKELY TO BECOME FOCUSED ALONG A PRE-FRONTAL LOW-LEVEL THERMAL RIDGE
AXIS ACROSS NORTHWESTERN MINNESOTA AND PARTS OF SOUTHEAST NORTH
DAKOTA/NORTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA...WHERE INHIBITION MAY BECOME WEAK
ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE INITIATION OF STORMS. A DEEPLY MIXED BOUNDARY
LAYER WITH CAPE OF 500-1000...IN THE PRESENCE OF A MODERATE TO
STRONGLY SHEARED...GENERALLY UNIDIRECTIONAL...SOUTHWESTERLY DEEP
LAYER FLOW...PROBABLY WILL BE CONDUCIVE FOR LOCALIZED DAMAGING WIND
GUSTS AND MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL.

STORM DEVELOPMENT COULD EVENTUALLY BE ENHANCED BY FRONTAL FORCING BY
EARLY THURSDAY EVENING...BUT THE BETTER CHANCE FOR STORMS MAY EXIST
IN A STRENGTHENING WARM ADVECTION ZONE ON THE NOSE OF THE CAPPING
MID-LEVEL RIDGE...ACROSS PARTS OF NORTHEAST/EAST CENTRAL MINNESOTA
INTO NORTHWEST WISCONSIN AFTER DARK. THESE STORMS MAY CONTINUE TO
POSE THE RISK FOR AT LEAST MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL.

...ERN GREAT BASIN INTO THE N CNTRL ROCKIES/NRN PLAINS...
DESPITE LIMITED MOISTURE...BOUNDARY LAYER HEATING...COUPLED WITH
OROGRAPHIC FORCING AND...AT LEAST WEAKLY DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW
DOWNSTREAM OF THE DIGGING UPPER TROUGH...LIKELY WILL CONTRIBUTE TO
AT LEAST SCATTERED STORM DEVELOPMENT THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
AFTER DARK...MODELS ARE SUGGESTIVE THAT THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY MAY
BECOME CONCENTRATED IN A ZONE OF STRONGER FORCING ALONG A SLOWLY
SOUTHWARD ADVANCING COLD FRONT...ABOVE THE FRONTAL INVERSION....NEAR
OR JUST NORTH OF THE WYOMING/MONTANA BORDER EAST NORTHEASTWARD INTO
THE DAKOTAS.

...MID MS VALLEY INTO THE SOUTHEAST...
WIDELY SCATTERED STORMS MAY BE ONGOING EARLY THURSDAY IN A LOW/MID
LEVEL WARM ADVECTION REGIME ACROSS THE EAST CENTRAL PLAINS INTO THE
OZARK PLATEAU. THIS ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO DIMINISH EARLY...WITH
NEW STORM DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLY ACCOMPANYING A WEAK MID-LEVEL IMPULSE
LIFTING NORTHEAST OF THE MID MISSOURI VALLEY TOWARD THE LOWER GREAT
LAKES REGION. ADDITIONAL STORMS ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN A MOISTENING
CONFLUENT FLOW IN THE WAKE OF THE DEPARTING EASTERN TROUGH...AHEAD
OF A BUILDING SOUTHERN STREAM RIDGE...ACROSS PARTS OF THE TENNESSEE
VALLEY INTO THE EASTERN GULF STATES. ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO BE
ISOLATED TO WIDELY SCATTERED IN COVERAGE AT BEST...HOWEVER.

...SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS...
AS CONVECTIVE TEMPERATURES ARE APPROACHED/EXCEEDED...ISOLATED TO
WIDELY SCATTERED STORMS ARE POSSIBLE LATE THURSDAY AFTERNOON NEAR A
DEVELOPING DRY LINE. THIS ACTIVITY MAY PERSIST INTO THE EARLY
EVENING...BEFORE DIMINISHING WITH THE LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING.

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

FULL-LATITUDE TROUGH OVER THE ERN CONUS WILL BEGIN TO LIFT NEWD INTO
THE ATLANTIC IN RESPONSE TO SEWD PROGRESSION OF NEXT UPSTREAM SYSTEM
THROUGH WRN CANADA INTO THE PACIFIC NW AND NRN ROCKIES. AS THIS
OCCURS...WEAK MIDLEVEL IMPULSE CURRENTLY OVER NRN UT WILL TRANSLATE
EWD WITHIN INCREASINGLY ZONAL FLOW PATTERN...EMERGING INTO THE CNTRL
HIGH PLAINS LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

IN THE LOW LEVELS...AFTERNOON SURFACE PATTERN WILL FEATURE LOW
PRESSURE CENTERS OVER SERN MANITOBA AND NWRN TX WITH A STRENGTHENING
LEE TROUGH OVER THE HIGH PLAINS. AN ASSOCIATED WARM FRONT WILL
INTENSIFY THROUGH THE PERIOD FROM THE MANITOBA LOW CENTER SEWD
THROUGH THE DAKOTAS INTO MID MS VALLEY. FARTHER S...A WARM OR
STATIONARY BOUNDARY WILL STRETCH ESEWD FROM THE LOW OVER NWRN TX
INTO THE LOWER MS VALLEY.

...CNTRL/SRN PLAINS...

BOUNDARY LAYER WILL REMAIN RATHER DRY E OF STRENGTHENING LEE TROUGH
WITH DEWPOINTS LARGELY IN THE 40S. HOWEVER...FORECAST SOUNDINGS
INDICATE THAT ENVIRONMENT WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY STEEP
LOW/MID-TROPOSPHERIC LAPSE RATES WHICH WILL LARGELY CONTRIBUTE TO
AFTERNOON MLCAPE APPROACHING 500 J/KG ALONG CNTRL HIGH PLAINS
PORTION OF LEE TROUGH. LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THAT DEEP
MIXING/CONVERGENCE ALONG THIS BOUNDARY IN CONCERT WITH INCREASED
FORCING FOR ASCENT IN ADVANCE OF ABOVE-MENTIONED SHORT WAVE TROUGH
MAY BE SUFFICIENT TO INITIATE ISOLATED STORMS BY LATE
AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING. DEEP-LAYER VERTICAL SHEAR WILL REMAIN ON
THE MARGINS /I.E. AROUND 30 KT THROUGH THE LOWEST 6 KM/ OF THAT
SUPPORTIVE OF UPDRAFT SUSTENANCE/ROTATION. WHEN COUPLED WITH THE
STEEP LAPSE RATES...SETUP MAY YIELD SOME HAIL AND LOCALLY STRONG
WIND GUSTS THROUGH THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS.

FARTHER S ALONG LEE TROUGH AND WARM/STATIONARY FRONT...A STRONGER
CAP AND THE ABSENCE OF ANY APPRECIABLE FORCING MECHANISMS ARE
EXPECTED TO INHIBIT ANY DEEP MOIST CONVECTION THROUGH THE DIURNAL
HEATING CYCLE.

ELEVATED TSTMS WILL BE POSSIBLE LATER TONIGHT IN A BAND OF
STRENGTHENING WAA/ISENTROPIC ASCENT FROM KS/NEB INTO THE OZARK
PLATEAU...ROOTED ABOVE EML/STRONG CAP. SOME HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE
WITH THE STRONGER STORMS GIVEN THE STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES AND
MUCAPE APPROACHING 1000 J/KG.

...OH VALLEY...

DEEP-LAYER ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH VORTICITY MAXIMUM/MIDLEVEL JET
STREAK DIGGING SEWD THROUGH THE UPPER GREAT LAKES MAY SERVE TO FOCUS
A CLUSTER OF LOW-TOPPED TSTMS OVER THE UPPER OH VALLEY THIS
AFTERNOON. GIVEN THE STEEP LAPSE RATES AND QUITE COOL THERMODYNAMIC
PROFILES...ENVIRONMENT WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF SOME HAIL INTO THIS
EVENING.
