DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0130 PM CST TUE FEB 19 2008

VALID 192000Z - 201200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..CALIFORNIA COASTAL AREAS...
A COLD MID-LEVEL IMPULSE...ONE OF SEVERAL PERTURBATIONS EMANATING
FROM AN UPSTREAM STRONG ZONAL MID-LATITUDE PACIFIC JET...IS NOW IN
THE PROCESS OF DIGGING TOWARD THE CALIFORNIA COAST. SYSTEM IS
PROGGED TO CONTINUE SOUTHEASTWARD INTO A BROADER SCALE TROUGH WITHIN
THE SOUTHERN BRANCH OF SPLIT UPPER FLOW NEAR THE PACIFIC COAST...AND
APPEARS LIKELY TO REACH COASTAL AREAS TOWARD 20/09-12Z.

MODEL DATA IS SUGGESTIVE THAT THIS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A -26 TO
-28C 500 MB COLD CORE...BUT GUIDANCE IS NOT CURRENTLY APPRECIABLY
SUPPORTIVE OF THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY DEVELOPING INLAND TONIGHT.
HOWEVER...DESPITE LIMITED AVAILABLE LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE...FORCING
/DESTABILIZATION IN THE EXIT REGION OF THE ASSOCIATED MID-LEVEL JET
STREAK HAS BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE EAST CENTRAL
PACIFIC...AS AS DETECTED BY THE OCEANIC/LONG RANGE LIGHTNING
DETECTION NETWORK. BASED ON THIS...IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE RISK OF
THUNDERSTORMS IS NOT COMPLETELY NEGLIGIBLE LATE TONIGHT AS THIS
STRONGER FORCING SHIFTS INTO THE COAST/COASTAL MOUNTAINS...MAINLY
NEAR/SOUTH OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY.

..DISCUSSION...

COMPLEX SPLIT FLOW PATTERN WILL CONTINUE INTO DAY 4 WITH A SERIES OF
SRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGHS ADVANCING EWD THROUGH THE SRN U.S.. THE
PRIMARY WAVE OF INTEREST IS THE ONE THAT WILL MOVE INTO THE LOWER MS
AND TN VALLEYS THIS PERIOD. MODEL DIFFERENCES DO EXIST REGARDING THE
DETAILS WITH THE GFS BEING SLOWER AND SOMEWHAT LESS AMPLIFIED THAN
THE ECMWF. THE ECMWF SOLUTION WOULD SUPPORT A SOMEWHAT GREATER
SEVERE POTENTIAL THAN THE GFS. IN EITHER CASE A SWLY LOW LEVEL JET
IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER THE GULF COASTAL REGION IN ASSOCIATION
WITH THE EWD ADVANCING SHORTWAVE TROUGH. THIS ALONG WITH RETREATING
MID ATLANTIC SURFACE RIDGE WILL SUPPORT POTENTIAL FOR AT LEAST A
SMALL UNSTABLE WARM SECTOR TO ADVANCE INTO SRN PARTS OF THE GULF
COASTAL STATES AHEAD OF COLD FRONT. GIVEN FAVORABLE VERTICAL
SHEAR...ANY STORMS DEVELOPING IN WARM SECTOR ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE
FRONT MAY BECOME CAPABLE OF PRODUCING SEVERE WEATHER.

LIKELY EXTEND FROM NRN PARTS OF THE SRN PLAINS THROUGH THE TN VALLEY
AND MID ATLANTIC REGION. WRN PORTIONS OF COLD FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO
SETTLE SLOWLY SWD THROUGH TX. HOWEVER...COASTAL FRONT MAY ADVANCE
INLAND THROUGH PARTS OF SRN LA.

..CNTRL AND SERN TX THROUGH THE LOWER MS VALLEY AREA...

SWD ADVANCE OF COLD FRONT WILL LIMIT THE SIZE OF THE QUALITY WARM
SECTOR. EARLY THURSDAY THE WARM SECTOR WITH UPPER 60S DEWPOINTS
SHOULD EXTEND FROM ROUGHLY SRN AND SERN TX INTO THE NWRN GULF. SWLY
FLOW ASSOCIATED WITH EWD ADVANCING UPPER TROUGH WILL ADVECT AN EML
AND STEEPER MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES OVER THE MOIST WARM SECTOR DURING
THE DAY. WHILE THIS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DESTABILIZATION...IT MAY ALSO
SERVE TO CAP THE WARM SECTOR TO SURFACE BASED STORMS.
DESTABILIZATION WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE IN COOL SECTOR FROM PARTS OF W
CNTRL THROUGH N CNTRL TX AS THE LOW LEVEL JET TRANSPORTS MOISTURE
ABOVE THE STABLE LAYER AND BENEATH STEEPENING MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES.
ELEVATED CONVECTION WILL LIKELY BE ONGOING WITHIN WARM ADVECTION
REGIME NORTH OF COASTAL FRONT FROM PARTS OF ERN TX INTO THE LOWER MS
VALLEY REGION. Q-G FORCING ACCOMPANYING THE EWD ADVANCING SHORTWAVE
TROUGH WILL LIKELY RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN THUNDERSTORMS INITIALLY
IN POST FRONTAL REGION ACROSS PARTS OF CNTRL THROUGH N CNTRL TX
THURSDAY EVENING. MUCAPE AND LAPSE RATES MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR A
THREAT OF HAIL WITH THIS ACTIVITY. STORMS MAY EVENTUALLY DEVELOP
CLOSER TO LEADING EDGE OF SURFACE POSITION OF FRONT AS DEEPER
FORCING ADVANCES EWD.

POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR UNSTABLE WARM SECTOR TO RECOVER INLAND
ACROSS PARTS OF SERN TX INTO SRN LA OVERNIGHT AS THE LOW LEVEL JET
INCREASES AND COASTAL FRONT LIFTS NWD. HEIGHT FALLS AND
STRENGTHENING LOW LEVEL JET ASSOCIATED WITH EWD ADVANCING SHORTWAVE
TROUGH MIGHT EVENTUALLY SUPPORT SURFACE BASED STORMS IN THIS REGION.
IF STORMS MANAGE TO DEVELOP IN WARM SECTOR...VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES
WOULD SUPPORT SUPERCELLS WITH AN ATTENDANT THREAT FOR ISOLATED
TORNADOES AND DAMAGING WIND. OTHERWISE LARGE HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE
WITH ANY SUPERCELLS DEVELOPING ABOVE THE SURFACE STABLE LAYER NORTH
OF COASTAL FRONT.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1158 PM CST MON FEB 18 2008

VALID 201200Z - 211200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

SPLIT FLOW UPPER PATTERN WILL CONTINUE TO EVOLVE INTO WEDNESDAY WITH
A LARGE UPPER TROUGH OVER THE NERN U.S. AND A SIGNIFICANT SHORTWAVE
TROUGH THAT IS FORECAST TO UNDERCUT BLOCKY UPPER RIDGE THAT WILL
PERSIST FROM THE NRN ROCKIES INTO SWRN CANADA. THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH
WILL CONTINUE EWD THROUGH THE GREAT BASIN AND SWRN STATES. AT THE
SURFACE ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE WILL ADVANCE SEWD THROUGH MUCH OF ERN
TWO THIRDS OF THE NATION. COLD FRONT DEMARCATING THE LEADING EDGE OF
THE COLDER AIR SHOULD EXTEND FROM THE SERN STATES WWD THROUGH TX BY
THE END OF THIS PERIOD.

..SRN PLAINS THROUGH LOWER MS VALLEY...

COLD FRONT WILL SETTLE SWD THROUGH OK...TX AND THE LOWER MS VALLEY.
SOUTH OF THE FRONT...PARTIALLY MODIFIED CP AIR WILL BEGIN RETURNING
NWWD THROUGH WARM SECTOR BENEATH STEEPENING MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
ASSOCIATED WITH EWD ADVECTING EML. THIS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO SOME
DESTABILIZATION WEDNESDAY...MAINLY OVER S AND SERN TX. MUCH OF THIS
REGION WILL BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF WEAK SHORTWAVE RIDGING AND
WILL PROBABLY REMAIN CAPPED TO DEEP CONVECTION DURING THE
DAY...THOUGH A FEW SHOWERS WILL BE POSSIBLE. THE CHANCE FOR
THUNDERSTORMS IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE WEDNESDAY EVENING AND
OVERNIGHT AS THE LOW LEVEL JET STRENGTHENS AND CONTRIBUTES TO NWD
DESTABILIZATION AND ISENTROPIC ASCENT...WITH THE STRONGEST LIFT
EXPECTED NORTH OF THE SWD ADVANCING FRONT. STORMS WILL BE ELEVATED.
HOWEVER...INSTABILITY MIGHT BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR A MARGINAL THREAT
FOR HAIL OVER CNTRL AND NRN TX AS STEEPER MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
ADVECT EWD...ESPECIALLY GIVEN EFFECTIVE SHEAR SUFFICIENT FOR MID
LEVEL UPDRAFT ROTATION. OVERALL THREAT DOES NOT APPEAR TO WARRANT
MORE THAN LOW HAIL PROBABILITIES AT THIS TIME.

..SWRN STATES...

ASCENT AND STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES ACCOMPANYING EWD ADVANCING
SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO SCATTERED CONVECTION FROM PARTS
OF THE GREAT BASIN INTO THE SWRN STATES. HOWEVER...LIMITED
INSTABILITY SUGGEST ANY LIGHTNING STRIKES WILL PROBABLY REMAIN
ISOLATED.
