DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

ACUS02 KWNS 021718
SWODY2
SPC AC 021715

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1215 PM CDT TUE SEP 02 2008

VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER NRN LA...WRN MS...AR INTO
SRN MO...

...SYNOPSIS...
PROGRESSIVE UPPER FLOW PATTERN IS FORECAST ACROSS THE NRN STATES ON
WEDNESDAY. A SHORT WAVE TROUGH CURRENTLY OVER SRN SASK IS EXPECTED
TO MOVE NEWD ACROSS PARTS OF ONT AND JAMES BAY TOMORROW...AS AN
UPSTREAM TROUGH NOW ALONG THE BC COAST DIGS SEWD INTO THE NRN
ROCKIES IN RESPONSE TO RIDGING OVER THE GULF OF AK.

AT THE SURFACE...A NE-SW ORIENTED COLD FRONT WILL MOVE SLOWLY SEWD
ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES...BECOMING QUASI-STATIONARY ACROSS THE
OH VALLEY INTO THE OZARKS AREA. LATEST FORECASTS FROM NHC INDICATE
THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV WILL MOVE SLOWLY NWD FROM EXTREME NERN TX
INTO EXTREME SERN OK.

...NRN LA/WRN MS/AR INTO SRN MO...
ALTHOUGH THE REMNANTS OF GUSTAV ARE EXPECTED TO SLOWLY WEAKEN WITH
TIME...A STRONG LOW LEVEL WIND FIELD IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST WITHIN
THE ERN AND NRN SECTIONS OF THE CYCLONIC CIRCULATION. MODEL
FORECASTS OF 40-50 KT WINDS IN THE 1-4 KM AGL LAYER AND VEERING
PROFILES WITH HEIGHT WILL MAINTAIN STRONG LOW LEVEL SHEAR/SRH IN THE
LOWEST 1 KM AGL. WARM MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES ARE LIKELY TO CONTINUE
LIMITING THE MAGNITUDE OF INSTABILITY...ALTHOUGH AREAS OF STRONGER
DIABATIC HEATING AND DESTABILIZATION MAY LOCALLY OCCUR DURING THE
DAYTIME HOURS IF BREAKS IN THE CLOUD COVER DEVELOP. SUFFICIENT CAPE
AND VERY FAVORABLE VERTICAL WIND PROFILES COUPLED WITH LOW LCL
HEIGHTS WILL REMAIN SUPPORTIVE OF SMALL TORNADIC SUPERCELLS MAINLY
IN THE ERN SEMICIRCLE OF THE LOW LEVEL CIRCULATION. THE PRIMARY
SEVERE THREAT SHOULD DIMINISH AFTER SUNSET.

FARTHER NORTH INTO SRN MO/EXTREME NRN AR...THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL
INTERACT WITH THE NRN PART OF THE REMNANT TROPICAL SYSTEM. ALTHOUGH
WIDESPREAD CLOUD COVER AND WEAK LAPSE RATES WILL AGAIN LIMIT
INSTABILITY...VEERING WIND PROFILES IN THE LOW-MID LEVELS WILL
ENHANCE THE INTENSITY OF CONVECTIVE UPDRAFTS THAT CAN FORM IN THIS
AREA. STRONGER CELLS WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING ISOLATED
TORNADOES AND STRONG WIND GUSTS.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 021557
SWODY1
SPC AC 021554

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1054 AM CDT TUE SEP 02 2008

VALID 021630Z - 031200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS TODAY FOR THE LOWER MS
VALLEY...

...LOWER MS VALLEY THROUGH TONIGHT...
THE REMNANTS OF TC GUSTAV WILL DRIFT NWWD FROM NW LA TO SE OK AS THE
MID LEVEL RIDGE IS MAINTAINED OVER THE OH VALLEY AND A STRONG
SHORTWAVE TROUGH LIFTS NEWD FROM THE DAKOTAS TO MN AND ONTARIO.
REGIONAL 12Z SOUNDINGS AND VWP/S STILL SHOW A BELT OF 40-50 KT
SLY/SELY LOW-LEVEL FLOW AND 0-1 KM SRH OF 250-400 M2/S2 CO-LOCATED
WITH THE PRIMARY CONVECTIVE BANDS FROM SE LA INTO CENTRAL MS.
LOW-LEVEL BUOYANCY IS ALSO LARGEST IN THIS SAME CORRIDOR...THUS
EXPECT THE SUPERCELL/TORNADO THREAT TO BE MOST CONCENTRATED TODAY
ACROSS MS. LITTLE OVERALL CHANGE IN THE THREAT AREA IS EXPECTED
THROUGH THE PERIOD...ASIDE FROM SOME MINOR EWD EXPANSION OF THE
CONVECTIVE BANDS DURING THE DAY NEAR THE SE MS/SW AL BORDER.

...ERN IA TO WI/WRN UPPER MI THIS AFTERNOON...
A STRONG COLD FRONT IS MOVING EWD ACROSS MN/WRN IA THIS MORNING AS A
STRONG MID LEVEL TROUGH EJECTS NEWD FROM THE DAKOTAS TOWARD WRN
ONTARIO. THE FRONT IS PRECEDED BY A CORRIDOR OF 68-70 F DEWPOINTS
AND SURFACE HEATING WILL ALLOW AFTERNOON MLCAPE VALUES TO REACH
1500-2000 J/KG. HOWEVER...MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE RATHER
POOR...THE STRONGER DEEP LAYER FLOW AND VERTICAL SHEAR LAGS THE COLD
FRONT...AND THE ANAFRONTAL STRUCTURE OF THE BOUNDARY WILL KEEP THE
MAJORITY OF THE CONVECTION ON THE COOL SIDE OF THE BOUNDARY.
ISOLATED STRONG/DAMAGING GUSTS MAY OCCUR WITH STORMS ALONG THE
FRONT...BUT THE OVERALL SEVERE STORM THREAT IS MARGINAL AT BEST.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 021233
SWODY1
SPC AC 021230

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0730 AM CDT TUE SEP 02 2008

VALID 021300Z - 031200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PORTIONS OF
LA...AR...MS...

...SRN-CENTRAL AR/ERN-CENTRAL LA/MS...
GUSTAV IS FORECAST TO MAKE SLOW NWWD PROGRESS INTO/ACROSS NERN TX
THIS PERIOD...WITH ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL FLOW PERSISTING --
PARTICULARLY AROUND NRN AND ERN PORTIONS OF THE SYSTEM. DISCRETE
SUPERCELLS EMBEDDED WITHIN OUTER RAIN BANDS EAST OF THE
CENTER OF GUSTAV WILL CONTINUE TO POSE A THREAT FOR TORNADOES THIS
MORNING AND AFTERNOON AS THE STORM MOVES SLOWLY NWWD.
WV SATELLITE IMAGERY SUGGESTS THE STORM IS BEGINNING TO ENTRAIN
DRIER AIR IN THE MID AND UPPER LEVELS. TORNADO THREAT WILL
SUBSEQUENTLY INCREASE TODAY AS CLOUD-BREAKS DEVELOP BETWEEN THE RAIN
BANDS ALLOWING THE ATMOSPHERE TO DESTABILIZE. INITIAL THREAT WILL BE
MAXIMIZED FROM SE LA/SRN MS THROUGH CNTRL MS...BUT EXPAND NWWD INTO
NE LA AND AR LATER TODAY/TONIGHT.

...WRN UPPER GREAT LAKES REGION SSWWD INTO IA/NRN MO...
SURFACE COLD FRONT PROGRESSING EWD SHOULD SERVE AS A FOCUS FOR
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TODAY...PARTICULARLY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON
AS THE WARM SECTOR BECOMES MARGINALLY UNSTABLE OVER AND EAST OF THE
NRN MS RIVER VALLEY INTO IA.

STRONGER FLOW ALOFT AND MAJORITY OF MID LEVEL COOLING SHOULD REMAIN
BEHIND THE FRONT...BUT SUFFICIENT SHEAR MAY SPREAD ATOP THE FRONT TO
SUPPORT LOCALLY STRONGER STORMS/LINE SEGMENTS. THIS ACTIVITY MAY BE
CAPABLE OF GUSTY WINDS AND HAIL AS LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES STEEPEN
WITH AFTERNOON HEATING. ANY SEVERE THREAT SHOULD END AFTER SUNSET
AS THE AIRMASS/LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES STABILIZE.

VALID 021104Z - 021200Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 880 CONTINUES.

TORNADO WATCH 880 WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED BY ANOTHER TORNADO WATCH
BEFORE 12Z. THE NEW WATCH WILL LIKELY EXTEND FROM SE LA THROUGH SRN
AND CNTRL MS.

DISCRETE SUPERCELLS EMBEDDED WITHIN OUTER RAINBANDS EAST OF THE
CENTER OF GUSTAV WILL CONTINUE TO POSE A THREAT FOR ISOLATED
TORNADOES THIS MORNING AND AFTERNOON AS THE STORM MOVES SLOWLY NWWD.
WV SATELLITE IMAGERY SUGGESTS THE STORM IS BEGINNING TO ENTRAIN
DRYER AIR IN THE UPPER LEVELS. TORNADO THREAT MAY INCREASE DURING
THE DAY...ESPECIALLY IF CLOUD BREAKS DEVELOP BETWEEN THE RAIN BANDS
ALLOWING THE ATMOSPHERE TO DESTABILIZE. INITIAL THREAT WILL BE
MAXIMIZED FROM SE LA THROUGH CNTRL MS...BUT EXPANDING NWWD INTO NE
LA AND SE AR LATER TODAY.

...DISCUSSION...
A HIGHLY AMPLIFIED PATTERN...GENERALLY CHARACTERIZED BY A CENTRAL
STATES LONGWAVE TROUGH...WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK
PER LATEST DETERMINISTIC/ENSEMBLE MODEL GUIDANCE. REMNANTS OF GUSTAV
ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE SUFFICIENTLY WEAKENED/BECOME EXTRATROPICAL BY
DAY 4/FRIDAY SUCH THAT ORGANIZED SEVERE TSTMS ARE NOT EXPECTED.
FOCUS FOR SEVERE TSTM/TORNADO POTENTIAL THEN SHIFTS TOWARD THE
APPROACH OF HURRICANE HANNA...WITH LATEST NHC FORECASTS SUGGESTING A
DAY 4/FRIDAY LANDFALL ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST STATES COAST.
ACCORDINGLY...A TORNADO THREAT COULD EXIST ON FRIDAY...SEEMINGLY
MOST LIKELY ACROSS THE CAROLINAS. OTHER SEVERE TSTMS WILL BE
POSSIBLE ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS LATE THIS WEEK /DAYS 4-5
FRIDAY-SATURDAY/ OWING TO A PERSISTENT UPSLOPE REGIME BENEATH
MODERATELY STRONG FLOW ALOFT.

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 880...

VALID 020842Z - 021015Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 880 CONTINUES.

THREAT FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE EARLY MORNING
MAINLY FROM SE LA THROUGH SRN AND CNTRL MS. WW 880 MIGHT BE EXPANDED
TO INCLUDE COUNTIES FARTHER NORTH IN CNTRL MS.

EARLY THIS MORNING THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM GUSTAV WAS OVER W
CNTRL LA MOVING NWWD. SEE LATEST ADVISORIES FROM NHC FOR FURTHER
DETAILS ON THIS STORM. VERY LARGE HODOGRAPHS EXIST EAST OF CENTER
FROM ERN LA THROUGH MS WITH 0-1 KM HELICITIES FROM 400-600 M2/S2.
GREATEST TORNADO THREAT NEXT SEVERAL HOURS WILL PERSIST FROM SE LA
THROUGH CNTRL MS IN ASSOCIATION WITH DISCRETE CELLS EMBEDDED WITHIN
THE OUTER RAINBANDS.

NRN END OF OUTER RAINBAND EXTENDING FROM SE MS NWD TO SCOTT COUNTY
IN CNTRL MS IS APPROACHING THE NRN EDGE OF WW 880. INSTABILITY IS
WEAKER WITH NWD EXTENT. HOWEVER...PERSISTENT INFLUX OF HIGHER
THETA-E AIR FROM THE GULF SUGGESTS THE THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT MAY
EVENTUALLY BECOME SUFFICIENT FOR STORMS TO SURVIVE FARTHER NWD INTO
MS...IN WHICH CASE COUNTIES WOULD NEED TO BE ADDED TO NRN END OF WW.
