MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0919
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0352 PM CDT TUE MAY 29 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...ERN CO...PARTS OF EXTREME SW NEB/NW KS

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 304...

VALID 292052Z - 292145Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 304 CONTINUES.

AN ADDITIONAL WW WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED SOUTH OF WW 304...ACROSS MUCH
OF THE REMAINDER OF EASTERN COLORADO...POSSIBLY WESTERN KANSAS.

STRENGTHENING DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW FIELD READILY APPARENT IN
OBSERVATIONAL DATA ACROSS CENTRAL/NORTHEAST COLORADO IS PROGGED TO
CONTINUE TO SLOWLY EXPAND AND SHIFT EASTWARD AHEAD OF AMPLIFIED
UPPER TROUGH THROUGH EARLY EVENING. STRONG/SEVERE STORMS ARE
INCREASING IN NUMBER NEAR/SOUTH OF DENVER INTO THE FORT MORGAN/AKRON
AREAS...AND WEAKENING INHIBITION IS EXPECTED TO FINALLY ALLOW
ADDITIONAL STORM DEVELOPMENT SOUTHWARD INTO THE PUEBLO/LA JUNTA
AREAS BY 29/23-30/00Z. DURING THIS TIME...INITIAL SCATTERED
SUPERCELLS STORMS MAY BEGIN TO CONSOLIDATE INTO AN INCREASINGLY
ORGANIZED MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEM. FLOW FIELDS ARE NOT
PARTICULARLY STRONG...BUT NOW VEER FROM A GENERAL EASTERLY DIRECTION
AT LOW-LEVELS TO MODERATE WESTERLY AT MID LEVELS... CREATING STRONG
DEEP LAYER SHEAR. AS UPSCALE DEVELOPMENT OCCURS... AND ACTIVITY
APPROACHES MORE STRONGLY HEATED BOUNDARY LAYER NEAR THE
COLORADO/KANSAS BORDER...DAMAGING WIND POTENTIAL PROBABLY WILL
INCREASE BY EARLY EVENING.

HAIL...DAMAGING WINDS AND A COUPLE OF TORNADOES WILL ALSO BE
POSSIBLE. GREATEST OVERALL THREAT IS ANTICIPATED FROM LATER THIS
AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE EVENING ACROSS ERN CO AND INTO WRN KS/SWRN
NEB. WHILE STORMS SHOULD CONTINUE/SPREAD ESEWD OVERNIGHT...SEVERE
THREAT SHOULD GRADUALLY DIMINISH IN CONJUNCTION WITH DIURNAL
STABILIZATION.

..UPPER MS VALLEY REGION SWWD INTO THE MID MO VALLEY...
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE ACROSS THIS REGION...ALONG AND
AHEAD OF SURFACE FRONT WHERE MOIST AIRMASS COMBINED WITH LIMITED
HEATING HAS RESULTED IN 500 TO 1500 J/KG MEAN-LAYER CAPE. MODERATE
SLY/SWLY FLOW ALOFT WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT ISOLATED
STRONGER/MULTICELL STORMS...WITH A FEW OF THE STRONGER STORMS
CAPABLE OF PRODUCING HAIL/LOCALLY-DAMAGING WINDS THROUGH MID
EVENING.

IN RESPONSE TO AMPLIFIED DIGGING UPSTREAM TROUGH...AND DEVELOPING
SURFACE PRESSURE FALL CENTER OVER SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO... NORTHERLY
FLOW IN THE WAKE OF INITIAL WEAK SURFACE FRONT IS BEGINNING TO TAKE
ON AN INCREASINGLY EASTERLY UPSLOPE COMPONENT TO THE LEE OF THE
COLORADO ROCKIES. AS THIS PROCESS CONTINUES THIS AFTERNOON...
DESTABILIZATION AND STRENGTHENING DEEP LAYER SHEAR BENEATH 30-40 KT
WESTERLY 500 MB FLOW WILL CONTRIBUTE TO AN INCREASINGLY FAVORABLE
ENVIRONMENT FOR SEVERE STORMS...INCLUDING ISOLATED SUPERCELLS.

THROUGH 21-22Z...MID-LEVEL THERMAL RIDGE WILL PROBABLY CONFINE
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT TO THE IMMEDIATE LEE OF THE HIGHER TERRAIN
WEST THROUGH SOUTH SOUTHWEST OF PUEBLO. BUT...SOUTHWEST THROUGH
SOUTH OF DENVER...INTO PARTS OF SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA...STORMS LIKELY
WILL BECOME WIDESPREAD...TO THE NORTH OF STRONGER CAP...BENEATH

IN ADDITION TO THE RISK FOR LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS...
CONDITIONS WILL BECOME FAVORABLE FOR A FEW TORNADOES THIS AFTERNOON.

SWODY2
SPC AC 291739

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1239 PM CDT TUE MAY 29 2007

VALID 301200Z - 311200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF NWRN TX/SWRN
OK...

..SYNOPSIS...
WHILE AN INITIAL UPPER SHORT-WAVE TROUGH MOVES SLOWLY EWD ACROSS THE
SRN PLAINS...MAIN UPPER LOW IS FORECAST TO DEEPEN/MOVE SLOWLY EWD
INTO THE NRN AND CENTRAL PLAINS THROUGH THE PERIOD. ASSOCIATED
SURFACE COLD FRONT WILL MOVE SLOWLY EWD/SEWD ACROSS THE PLAINS...AND
SHOULD REMAIN A FOCUS FOR CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE PERIOD.

..SRN PLAINS...
MODELS FORECAST THAT A SURFACE WAVE ALONG THE SEWD-MOVING COLD FRONT
WILL LINGER OVER/SHIFT SWWD ACROSS THE WRN HALF OF TX THIS
PERIOD...WHILE MODERATELY-UNSTABLE AIRMASS DEVELOPS AHEAD OF THE
FRONT/LOW. HOWEVER...WEAK SHORT-WAVE RIDGING IN THE WAKE OF INITIAL
SHORT-WAVE TROUGH MOVING INTO ERN PARTS OF THE SRN PLAINS SHOULD
MAINTAIN A CAP ACROSS MOST OF THE WARM SECTOR.

ATTM...IT APPEARS THAT A LOW-PROBABILITY/CONDITIONAL POTENTIAL FOR
STORM DEVELOPMENT WILL EXTEND FROM NEAR/NE OF THE LOW NEWD ALONG THE
COLD FRONT -- OR FROM PORTIONS OF THE TX SOUTH PLAINS/WRN N TX NEWD
INTO SWRN OK. PRESUMING STORM DEVELOPMENT CAN OCCUR...DEGREE OF
INSTABILITY WOULD LIKELY SUPPORT VIGOROUS UPDRAFTS.

WHILE STRONGER FLOW ALOFT IS PROGGED TO REMAIN NW OF THE SURFACE
FRONT -- I.E. ACROSS THE TX PANHANDLE AND INTO KS...SHEAR SHOULD BE
SUFFICIENT GIVEN DEGREE OF INSTABILITY TO SUPPORT MULTICELL
ORGANIZATION...AND ASSOCIATED/CONDITIONAL THREAT FOR LARGE
HAIL/LOCALLY-DAMAGING WINDS.

AN EVEN LESS LIKELY -- BUT STILL POSSIBLE -- SEVERE POTENTIAL WILL
EXIST N OF THE SURFACE LOW...ACROSS PARTS OF THE TX SOUTH PLAINS AND
INTO ERN NM...WHERE LOW-LEVEL ELYS WILL RESULT IN UPSLOPE FLOW AS
WELL AS MORE FAVORABLE VEERING WITH HEIGHT. SHOULD ANY STORMS
DEVELOP WITHIN THIS LESS UNSTABLE/UPSLOPE FLOW REGIME...HAIL AND
LOCALLY-DAMAGING WINDS WOULD BE POSSIBLE.

..UPPER MS VALLEY/WRN UPPER GREAT LAKES SSWWD INTO ERN KS...
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS -- LIKELY TO BE ONGOING ACROSS PARTS OF THE
AREA AT THE START OF THE PERIOD -- SHOULD CONTINUE THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON/OVERNIGHT...WITHIN MARGINALLY-UNSTABLE AIRMASS E OF
SLOWLY-ADVANCING FRONT.

WITH FLOW ALOFT FORECAST TO REMAIN MODEST...MERIDIONAL...AND ROUGHLY
PARALLEL TO THE SURFACE FRONT ACROSS THIS REGION ON ERN FRINGES OF
STALLING UPPER LOW...IT APPEARS ATTM THAT NEITHER KINEMATIC NOR
THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT WILL BE PARTICULARLY FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE
STORMS. THEREFORE...WILL MAINTAIN AN AREA OF LOW-PROBABILITY THREAT
ALONG/AHEAD OF SURFACE FRONT.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

VALID 291630Z - 301200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS
LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT....

..SYNOPSIS...
MERIDIONAL MID/UPPER LEVEL LOW OVER THE NRN ROCKIES IS FORECAST TO
REMAIN QUASISTATIONARY DURING THE PERIOD. MODELS INDICATE THAT
SEVERAL SHORTWAVE TROUGHS/VORTICITY MAXES WILL MOVE EWD ON THE SRN
PERIPHERY OF THE TROUGH FROM NRN UT THROUGH CO INTO SWRN NEB/NWRN
KS. MORNING SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A LOW OVER E CENTRAL ND WITH A
QUASISTATIONARY FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT EXTENDS SSWWD INTO SWRN
NEB/NWRN KS...THEN CONTINUES AS A COLD FRONT WWD ACROSS NRN NM AND
NRN AZ. AN ADDITIONAL SURFACE LOW IS OVER SERN CO WITH A TROUGH
THAT EXTENDS SWD ACROSS ERN AND S CENTRAL NM. THERE IS ALSO A WEAK
MID LEVEL TROUGH/MCV OVER N CENTRAL TX AND STRONG RIDGING FROM THE
CAROLINAS INTO THE LOWER GREAT LAKES.

..CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS OF CO/KS INTO THE OK/TX PANHANDLES...

MODELS ARE TRYING TO FOCUS ON THE AREA OF ERN CO INTO WRN KS FOR
THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT. AIR MASS IS QUITE MOIST THROUGHOUT THE
PLAINS THIS MORNING WITH MORNING RAOB DATA SHOWING 850 MB DEW POINTS
GENERALLY 10-14 DEG C FROM TX INTO KS/NEB INTO THE UPPER MS VALLEY.
LOW LEVEL JET IS 35-40 KT FROM CENTRAL OK NWD INTO E CENTRAL MN WITH
MAIN THERMAL BOUNDARY EXTENDING FROM CENTRAL ND SWWD THROUGH THE DEN
REGION AND SRN UT. RAOB DATA ALSO INDICATES THAT THE MID LEVEL FLOW
IS MODERATE WITH A 50-55 KT JET STREAK AT 500 MB ACROSS NERN NV THEN
EXTENDING NEWD INTO THE NRN PLAINS. THE MODELS PROJECT THAT THIS
JET STREAK WILL STRENGTHEN SLIGHTLY THIS AFTERNOON AS IT MOVES EWD
OVER W CENTRAL CO ENHANCING UVVS ASSOCIATED WITH DIFFLUENT FLOW OVER
ERN CO INTO WRN KS.

VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY INDICATES BEST POTENTIAL FOR
HEATING/DESTABILIZATION WILL BE THROUGHOUT THE TX PANHANDLE INTO
SWRN KS WHERE MODELS FORECAST MUCAPE BETWEEN 2000-2500 J/KG BY THIS
EVENING. WITH EXIT REGION OF MID LEVEL JET STREAK MOVING TOWARDS E
CENTRAL CO...DEEP LAYER SHEAR WILL BE AROUND 40-50 KT WHICH IS
SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT STRONG UPDRAFTS AND ISOLATED SUPERCELLS BY
THIS EVENING IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE SFC LOW OVER SERN CO.

LOOKS AT THIS TIME THAT CONVECTIVE INITIATION COULD BE BIMODAL LATE
THIS AFTERNOON WITH ISOLATED STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING
OVER ERN CO/WRN KS...AND A LINE OF STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
DEVELOPING ALONG THE FRONT FROM SWRN NEB SWWD TOWARDS OR SOUTH OF
THE DEN AREA WHERE UPSLOPE MAY ALSO ENHANCE FORCING. LARGE HAIL AND
STRONG DAMAGING WINDS LOOK TO BE THE MAIN THREATS GIVEN THAT THE
ACTIVITY MAY WAIT UNTIL THIS EVENING GIVEN THE TIMING OF THE SRN
PARTS OF THE MID LEVEL TROUGH MOVING INTO THE REGION.
BUT...SUPERCELLS COULD DEVELOP OVER THE SERN QUARTER OF CO AND MOVE
INTO SWRN KS AND THE OK/TX PANHANDLES AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT WHERE
THERE WILL BE DEEP LAYER SHEAR/INSTABILITY.

..UPPER MS VALLEY...

ONCE AGAIN STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED ALONG QUASISTATIONARY
FRONTAL BOUNDARY ACROSS MN. MODELS INDICATE MODERATE INSTABILITY
FOR TODAY WITH MUCAPE 1000-1200 J/KG. VERY MOIST PROFILES ARE SHOWN
ON THE FORECAST SOUNDINGS THROUGHOUT THIS AREA...THUS IT LOOKS LIKE
THE MAIN THREAT HERE MAY BE STRONG WET MICROBURSTS.
