DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

ACUS02 KWNS 271658
SWODY2
SPC AC 271657

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1157 AM CDT TUE APR 27 2010

VALID 281200Z - 291200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A STRONG BELT OF WESTERLIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE POLAR JET OVER THE
PACIFIC IS UNDERGOING AMPLIFICATION...AND MODELS INDICATE THAT THIS
PROCESS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THIS FORECAST PERIOD. AN EVOLVING
UPPER TROUGH ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THIS REGIME IS PROGGED TO
TRANSLATE EASTWARD THROUGH THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST AND ROCKIES...WITH
AN EMBEDDED CLOSED LOW DEVELOPING NEAR THE MONTANA/CANADIAN BORDER
AREA...WHILE A SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE IMPULSE DIGS ACROSS
NORTHERN/CENTRAL CALIFORNIA TOWARD THE SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN. AS
THIS OCCURS...A LARGE DOWNSTREAM UPPER TROUGH SHOULD FINALLY BEGIN
TO PROGRESS EAST OF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD.

GUIDANCE INDICATES THAT THE EVOLVING UPPER PATTERN WILL BE
ACCOMPANIED BY DEEPENING SURFACE TROUGHING TO THE LEE OF THE
ROCKIES. THIS IS LIKELY TO ENCOMPASS MUCH OF THE PLAINS BY 12Z
THURSDAY...WITH EMBEDDED LOW CENTERS OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS AND
SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN...ALONG WITH A STRONG AND INTENSIFYING
SOUTHERLY LOW-LEVEL JET. HOWEVER...IN THE WAKE OF THE EASTERN
SYSTEM...AND A WEAK SUBTROPICAL IMPULSE MIGRATING EAST OF THE LOWER
RIO GRANDE VALLEY INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO...A SUBSTANTIVE RETURN
FLOW OF MOISTURE OFF THE GULF OF MEXICO INTO THE PLAINS IS EXPECTED
TO BE SLOW TO DEVELOP. COUPLED WITH VERY WARM ELEVATED MIXED LAYER
AIR ADVECTING EAST OF THE ROCKIES/PLATEAU REGION... THIS WILL LIMIT
THE CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL WEDNESDAY/WEDNESDAY NIGHT. BUT INSTABILITY
ASSOCIATED WITH COLD MID-LEVEL AIR SETTLING INTO THE INTERMOUNTAIN
WEST...AND WEAKER MID-LEVEL COOLING/STRENGTHENING LIFT BENEATH
INCREASINGLY DIVERGENT UPPER FLOW SPREADING EAST OF THE NORTHERN
ROCKIES INTO THE NORTHERN PLAINS...PROBABLY WILL BE SUFFICIENT AT
LEAST FOR SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY.

...WRN NEBRASKA THRU PARTS OF THE WRN AND CNTRL DAKOTAS...
SURFACE HEATING AND DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ADVECTION ARE EXPECTED TO
CONTRIBUTE TO STEEP LOW AND MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ACROSS THE
NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS BY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. DESPITE LIMITED
MOISTURE...MODELS ARE SUGGESTIVE THAT A DEEPLY MIXED BOUNDARY LAYER
WILL BECOME CHARACTERIZED BY CAPE UP TO AROUND 500 J/KG OR SO...IN
THE PRESENCE OF STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR NEAR A 50-70+ KT
SOUTHWESTERLY 500 MB JET STREAK. THIS ENVIRONMENT APPEARS AT LEAST
MARGINALLY SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED VIGOROUS STORM DEVELOPMENT...WITH
LARGE SUB-CLOUD TEMPERATURE/DEW POINT SPREADS ENHANCING THE RISK FOR
LOCALIZED POTENTIALLY DAMAGING SURFACE GUSTS. THIS THREAT MAY
CONTINUE INTO THE EVENING HOURS...AS CONVECTION SPREADS WITH DEEP
LAYER MEAN FLOW AND FORCING INTO THE CENTRAL DAKOTAS...WHERE
INTERACTION WITH THE STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL JET COULD CONTRIBUTE TO
AT LEAST SOMEWHAT BETTER POTENTIAL FOR LARGE HAIL THROUGH DAYBREAK
THURSDAY.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1123 AM CDT TUE APR 27 2010

VALID 271630Z - 281200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SOUTHEAST...
MID LEVEL LOW ROTATING EAST SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE TN VALLEY IS
FORECAST TO TRACK RAPIDLY ACROSS THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS THIS
AFTERNOON AND PROVIDE LARGE SCALE FORCING FOR ASCENT. STEEP MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES...AS SAMPLED BY THE 12Z BNA SOUNDING...COMBINED
WITH STRONG DAYTIME HEATING AND COOLING ALOFT WILL YIELD POCKETS OF
AFTERNOON MLCAPE OF 250-500 J/KG. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY THIS AFTERNOON OVER PARTS OF
EAST TN/NORTH GA AND TRACK EASTWARD INTO THE CAROLINAS. DESPITE
WEAK CAPE VALUES...FORECAST SOUNDINGS IN THIS REGION SUGGEST THE
POTENTIAL FOR HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS IN THE STRONGER CELLS. THE
THREAT SHOULD WEAKEN RAPIDLY THIS EVENING WITH THE LOSS OF DAYTIME
HEATING.

...INTERIOR NORTHWEST STATES...
COLD FRONT ERN WA/OR SWWD TO OFF CA COAST PRECEDES A STRONG MID
LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH CURRENTLY MOVING ONSHORE THIS MORNING. STRONG
LARGE SCALE LIFT WILL OVERSPREAD MUCH OF WA/ORE/ID TODAY...WHERE
RELATIVELY STEEP LOW/MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE EXPECTED. WARM SECTOR
PRECEDING THE COLD FRONT CHARACTERIZED BY DRY LOW LEVELS AND
CONSIDERABLE MID LEVEL CLOUDINESS. THUS ANY IMPORTANT THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT WILL BE ALONG AND IN THE POST-FRONTAL AIR MASS WHERE
GREATEST LIFT AND MID LEVEL COOLING WILL BE OCCURRING WITH THE UPPER
TROUGH. INSTABILITY STILL EXPECTED TO BE MEAGER WITH NO MORE THAN A
COUPLE HUNDRED JOULES OF MLCAPE. STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR OF 60-70
KT AND STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL SUPPORT POTENTIAL FOR GUSTY/LOCAL
DAMAGING WINDS AND PRIMARILY SMALL HAIL.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0723 AM CDT TUE APR 27 2010

VALID 271300Z - 281200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SOUTHEAST...
MORNING WATER VAPOR LOOPS SHOW A STRONG MID LEVEL LOW ROTATING
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS THE MID MS VALLEY. THIS FEATURE IS FORECAST TO
TRACK RAPIDLY INTO THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS BY THIS AFTERNOON AND
PROVIDE LARGE SCALE FORCING FOR ASCENT. STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
OVER PARTS OF THE SOUTHEAST COMBINED WITH STRONG DAYTIME HEATING AND
COOLING ALOFT WILL YIELD POCKETS OF AFTERNOON MLCAPE OF 250-500
J/KG. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY
BY LATE MORNING OVER PARTS OF EAST TN/NORTH GA AND TRACK EASTWARD
INTO THE CAROLINAS. DESPITE WEAK CAPE VALUES...FORECAST SOUNDINGS
IN THIS REGION SUGGEST THE POTENTIAL FOR HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS IN THE
STRONGER CELLS. THE THREAT SHOULD WEAKEN RAPIDLY THIS EVENING WITH
THE LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING.

...NORTHWEST STATES...
A STRONG MID LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS MOVING ASHORE THIS MORNING
OVER WESTERN ORE/NORTHWEST CA. STRONG LARGE SCALE LIFT WILL
OVERSPREAD MUCH OF WA/ORE/ID TODAY...WHERE RELATIVELY STEEP LOW/MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE EXPECTED. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE
FORECAST TO INTENSIFY BY MID-LATE AFTERNOON OVER CENTRAL/EASTERN
WA/ORE AND TRACK EASTWARD INTO WESTERN ID. STRONG LOW LEVEL AND
EFFECTIVE SHEAR VALUES INDICATE THE POTENTIAL FOR SUPERCELL/BOW
STRUCTURES CAPABLE OF GUSTY WINDS AND HAIL.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0325 AM CDT TUE APR 27 2010

VALID 301200Z - 051200Z

...DISCUSSION...
DRASTIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE GFS AND ECMWF ARE AGAIN APPARENT
THIS FORECAST...AS EARLY AS DAY 4 /FRI. APR. 30/. SUBSTANTIAL
DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN THE MODELS IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE COMPLEX
UPPER SYSTEM AFFECTING THE WRN AND CENTRAL U.S. RESULTS IN A GFS
FORECAST OF THE DAY 4 AFTERNOON SURFACE FRONTAL POSITION FROM STL
SWWD INTO SERN TX. MEANWHILE...THE ECMWF DEPICTS THE FRONT AT THE
SAME TIME ACROSS CENTRAL KS/CENTRAL OK/CENTRAL TX. WHILE SEVERE
POTENTIAL WILL LIKELY EXIST INVOF THE SURFACE FRONT REGARDLESS OF
ITS ACTUAL LOCATION -- AS AMPLY MOIST/UNSTABLE WARM SECTOR WOULD
LIKELY EXIST ALONG WITH FAVORABLE SHEAR...THE LOCATION OF THIS
THREAT WOULD OBVIOUSLY DIFFER BY SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES BASED ON A
PERFECT PROG OF THE TWO RUNS.

ATTM...IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE ECMWF SOLUTION IS MORE LIKELY --
WITH MAIN SEVERE POTENTIAL EXTENDING FROM PARTS OF IA ACROSS MO/ERN
KS AND INTO OK AND PERHAPS N TX. HOWEVER...ATTM CONFIDENCE IS NOT
HIGH ENOUGH TO HIGHLIGHT A SPECIFIC THREAT AREA.

SUBSTANTIAL MODEL DIFFERENCES CONTINUE THROUGH THE MEDIUM
RANGE...AND THEREFORE CONFIDENCE IS LIKEWISE INSUFFICIENT TO WARRANT
ANY THREAT AREAS THROUGH THE END OF THE PERIOD.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0229 AM CDT TUE APR 27 2010

VALID 291200Z - 301200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE MID MO VALLEY REGION
SSWWD INTO PARTS OF OK/N TX...

...SYNOPSIS...
LARGE UPPER LOW/TROUGH INITIALLY CENTERED OVER THE INTERMOUNTAIN
WEST WILL MAKE SLOW EWD PROGRESS THIS PERIOD...INCREASINGLY
AFFECTING THE CENTRAL CONUS.

AT THE SURFACE...AN OCCLUDED SYSTEM WILL PROGRESS ACROSS THE NRN AND
CENTRAL PLAINS. BY THE END OF THE PERIOD...THE OCCLUDED FRONT IS
EXPECTED TO ARC SEWD FROM A LOW OVER THE ND/NRN MN VICINITY ACROSS
THE UPPER MS VALLEY...AND THEN ON SWWD AS A COLD FRONT ACROSS
IA...ERN KS/WRN MO...ERN OK...AND INTO CENTRAL TX.

...MID MO VALLEY REGION SSWWD INTO PARTS OF OK/N TX...
BOUNDARY-LAYER MOISTURE WILL CONTINUE SPREADING NWD INTO THE CENTRAL
U.S. AS STRONG SLY FLOW CONTINUES...WITH DEWPOINTS AROUND 60 F
SPREADING INTO OK/KS AND INTO THE MID MO VALLEY REGION. DAYTIME
HEATING OF THE MOISTENING -- BUT CAPPED -- BOUNDARY LAYER WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO AFTERNOON DESTABILIZATION...WITH 1000 TO 1500 J/KG
MIXED-LAYER CAPE EXPECTED TO EVOLVE.

WHILE SURFACE EVOLUTION ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS DIFFERS WITHIN THE
NAM AND GFS SOLUTIONS...ATTM EXPECT CAP EROSION ALONG SOME
COMBINATION OF A FRONT AND/OR DRYLINE FROM THE MID MO VALLEY INTO
CENTRAL KS/WRN OK TO EVENTUALLY RESULT IN ISOLATED STORM
DEVELOPMENT.

WHILE THE CAP SHOULD LIMIT STORM COVERAGE DURING THE
AFTERNOON...VERY STRONG/VEERING FLOW WITH HEIGHT SPREADING ACROSS
THE CENTRAL U.S. WILL YIELD SHEAR VERY FAVORABLE FOR
STRONGLY-ROTATING SUPERCELL STORMS. THUS...ANY STORM WHICH DEVELOPS
SHOULD QUICKLY BECOME SEVERE...WITH VERY LARGE HAIL EXPECTED ALONG
WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY-DAMAGING WINDS. WHILE DEGREE OF
LOW-LEVEL SHEAR WILL BE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF TORNADO
POTENTIAL...SOMEWHAT LIMITED LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE - AND THE FAIRLY
DEEP BOUNDARY LAYER WHICH SHOULD RESULT -- SHOULD LIMIT THE OVERALL
TORNADO THREAT.

OVERNIGHT...STORMS SHOULD BECOME MORE LINEARLY-ORGANIZED ALONG THE
ADVANCING COLD FRONT. WHILE DECREASING INSTABILITY AND CHANGE IN
STORM MODE SHOULD YIELD A SLOW DECREASE IN HAIL/TORNADO
POTENTIAL...MARGINAL HAIL/DAMAGING WIND POTENTIAL WILL LIKELY
PERSIST WELL INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.
