SPC AC 300020

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0620 PM CST THU NOV 29 2007

VALID 300100Z - 301200Z

..NO TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..PACIFIC NW...

COLD AIR ALOFT WITH -32C AT 500 MB ACCOMPANYING A VORT MAX DROPPING
SWD ALONG THE PACIFIC NW COAST IS CONTRIBUTING TO STEEP 700-500 MB
LAPSE RATES. HOWEVER...LIMITED LOW LEVEL MOISTURE IS RESULTING IN
VERY WEAK INSTABILITY WITH MUCAPE BELOW 200 J/KG. SCATTERED SHOWERS
WILL LIKELY CONTINUE IN THIS ENVIRONMENT THIS EVENING. HOWEVER...ANY
LIGHTNING PRODUCED BY THE CONVECTION IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN LESS THAN
10% COVERAGE AND MOSTLY OFFSHORE IF IT OCCURS AT ALL.

..FL...

SHOWERS DEVELOPING OVER FL ARE ASSOCIATED WITH WARM CLOUD PROCESSES
AND ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN TOO SHALLOW FOR LIGHTNING PRODUCTION DUE
THE PRESENCE OF A PRONOUNCED INVERSION BETWEEN 700 AND 500 MB.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
A BROAD CYCLONIC FLOW REGIME EXISTS OVER THE NRN TWO THIRDS OF THE

AN AREA OF ENHANCED CONVECTION BEGINNING TO SPREAD INLAND OVER THE

..NO TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
LOW LEVEL PATTERN WILL REMAIN UNFAVORABLE FOR DEEP MOIST CONVECTION
THROUGH THE PERIOD...AS FAST/ZONAL MID AND UPPER LEVEL FLOW PERSISTS
OVER MUCH OF THE COUNTRY. SHALLOW MOIST CONVECTION AND THE
POSSIBILITY OF AN ISOLATED LIGHTNING STRIKE OR TWO MAY ACCOMPANY
VERY COLD AIR OVERSPREADING THE PAC NW COAST TODAY.
ADDITIONALLY...A LOW PROBABILITY OF AN ISOLATED LIGHTNING STRIKE
WILL DEVELOP IN LEE OF THE LOWER GREAT LAKES /ESPECIALLY LAKE
ONTARIO/...WHERE VERY STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND 50-100 J/KG
SBCAPE COULD SUPPORT BRIEF THUNDER WITH LAKE EFFECT SNOW BAND/S/
LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT. ELEVATED MOIST CONVECTION SHOULD ALSO
INCREASE INTO PORTIONS OF THE SRN PLAINS LATE TONIGHT AS SSWLY LLJ
INTENSIFIES.

..DISCUSSION...

LATEST MEDIUM-RANGE GUIDANCE REMAINS RELATIVELY CONSISTENT IN THE
EWD PROGRESSION OF MID-LEVEL TROUGH FROM THE HIGH PLAINS REGION AT
THE BEGINNING OF DAY 4 /SUN DEC 2ND/ THROUGH THE MS VALLEY AND INTO
THE OH AND TN VALLEYS BY THE BEGINNING OF DAY 5 /MON DEC 3RD/.
ACCOMPANYING COLD FRONT WILL PUSH SEWD THROUGH THE OH/TN VALLEYS AND
GULF COAST STATES WITH SOME POTENTIAL FOR A FEW SEVERE STORMS MAINLY
OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY ON SUNDAY INTO SUNDAY NIGHT. MODEL
GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO INDICATE THAT INSTABILITY WITHIN PRE-FRONTAL
WARM SECTOR WILL REMAIN QUITE WEAK WHICH WILL LIKELY LIMIT A MORE
WIDESPREAD SEVERE WEATHER EPISODE.

THEREAFTER...DIFFERENCES ARISE IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE LONG WAVE
PATTERN...THOUGH IT DOES APPEAR THAT SOME DEGREE OF TROUGHING WILL
BE MAINTAINED ACROSS ERN N AMERICA. NO ADDITIONAL SEVERE WEATHER
EVENTS ARE ANTICIPATED THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE EXTENDED PERIOD.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS AND FORECAST...

LEAD SHORT WAVE TROUGH INITIALLY OVER THE CNTRL HIGH PLAINS IS
FORECAST TO RAPIDLY LIFT NEWD THROUGH THE UPPER MS VALLEY IN ADVANCE
OF MORE SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE TROUGH TRANSLATING EWD THROUGH THE
LOWER CO VALLEY AND EVENTUALLY INTO THE CNTRL/SRN HIGH PLAINS. IN
THE LOW LEVELS...CONSIDERABLE MODEL VARIABILITY EXISTS IN THE TRACK
OF PRIMARY SURFACE LOW. THE GFS AND ECMWF DEVELOP THIS FEATURE NEWD
FROM CO INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST BY THE END OF THE PERIOD...WHERE AS
THE NAM AND SREF MEAN SOLUTIONS INDICATE THE LOW OVER THE LOWER MO
VALLEY BY SUNDAY MORNING. ASSOCIATED WARM FRONT WILL LIFT NWD AHEAD
OF THE SURFACE LOW WHILE THE COLD FRONT PUSHES SWD THROUGH THE CNTRL
INTO SRN PLAINS.

INTENSE...LOW-LEVEL THERMAL AND MOISTURE ADVECTIONS ARE FORECAST
INITIALLY OVER THE CNTRL PLAINS PRIOR TO DEVELOPING INTO THE MIDWEST
IN ASSOCIATION WITH STRONG LLJ WHICH WILL MIGRATE NEWD THROUGH THE
PERIOD. THE GREATEST LIKELIHOOD OF TSTM DEVELOPMENT APPEARS TO BE
SATURDAY NIGHT FROM THE CNTRL LOW PLAINS INTO THE LOWER MO VALLEY
WHERE MOISTENING ALONG LLJ AXIS WILL OCCUR BENEATH ERN FRINGE OF
STEEPER MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES SPREADING EWD ACROSS THE PLAINS. THE
MAJORITY OF THIS ACTIVITY IS FORECAST TO REMAIN SLIGHTLY ELEVATED
WITH SOME POTENTIAL FOR SMALL HAIL WITH THE MORE INTENSE CORES. NO
SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED.

..SYNOPSIS...

EVOLVING TROUGH OVER THE PACIFIC NW FRIDAY MORNING WILL AMPLIFY
THROUGH THE PERIOD IN RESPONSE TO DIGGING...MID AND UPPER-LEVEL JET
STREAKS OVER THE FAR ERN PACIFIC. AS THIS OCCURS...CUT-OFF LOW
SITUATED W OF BAJA CA WILL OPEN AND EJECT NEWD INTO THE FOUR CORNERS
REGION BY SATURDAY MORNING. AT THE SURFACE...BROAD LOW PRESSURE
OVER THE GREAT BASIN AND LOWER CO VALLEY WILL GRADUALLY CONSOLIDATE
INTO A SURFACE LOW WITH THIS FEATURE DEVELOPING NEWD INTO CNTRL
ROCKIES BY THE END OF THE PERIOD. FARTHER E...COLD FRONT INITIALLY
SAGGING SWD THROUGH THE SRN PLAINS WILL STALL AND THEN BEGIN TO
RETREAT NWD FRIDAY NIGHT IN RESPONSE TO INCREASING PRESSURE FALLS
AHEAD OF THIS DEVELOPING SURFACE LOW.

..AZ...

STRENGTHENING...SLY LOW-LEVEL FLOW AHEAD OF EJECTING CUT-OFF LOW AND
EVOLVING SURFACE CYCLONE WILL RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN MOISTURE NWD
THROUGH THE REGION...EFFECTIVELY CONTRIBUTING TO POCKETS OF MARGINAL
INSTABILITY FRIDAY NIGHT...NAMELY OVER CNTRL AND SRN PARTS OF THE
STATE. A FEW EMBEDDED TSTMS WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY LIKELY MAINLY
AFTER 01/06-01/09Z WITHIN ZONE OF STRONGER FORCING FOR ASCENT
IMMEDIATELY AHEAD OF UPPER WAVE. FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE THAT
VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BE QUITE STRONG...HOWEVER THE MARGINAL
INSTABILITY SHOULD LIMIT UPDRAFT ORGANIZATION/LONGEVITY AND NO
SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED.

..NO TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

UPPER TROUGH FROM THE UPPER MS VALLEY INTO THE CNTRL PLAINS WITHIN
PROGRESSIVE FLOW REGIME WILL ADVANCE EWD THROUGH THE OH VALLEY AND
NERN STATES THURSDAY. THIS WILL PROVIDE IMPETUS FOR A COLD FRONT
FROM THE GREAT LAKES INTO THE SRN PLAINS TO CONTINUE EAST AND SEWD
AND OFF THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD AND GULF COAST DURING THE DAY. HIGH
PRESSURE WILL BUILD INTO ERN THIRD OF THE NATION WITH OFFSHORE FLOW
OVER THE GULF MUCH OF THE DAY. FARTHER WEST...ANOTHER IN A SERIES OF
IMPULSES WILL DROP INTO THE PACIFIC NW. A LARGE CUTOFF LOW WILL
PERSIST WEST OF BAJA.

..PACIFIC NW REGION...

COLD UPPER LEVEL TEMPERATURES WITH -34C AT 500 MB ACCOMPANYING A
SHORTWAVE TROUGH DROPPING INTO THE PACIFIC NW WILL RESULT IN STEEP
MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES. HOWEVER...LIMITED LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WILL
MAINTAIN ONLY MARGINAL INSTABILITY. SCATTERED CONVECTION WILL LIKELY
DEVELOP WITHIN THIS STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT...BUT CURRENT
THINKING IS THAT THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE WILL REMAIN LESS THAN 10%.
BEST CHANCE FOR A FEW STRIKES WILL BE NEAR THE COAST WHERE PRESENCE
OF THE MARINE LAYER MAY RESULT IN SLIGHTLY GREATER INSTABILITY.

..ERN AZ THROUGH NM...

IMPULSES EJECTING NEWD ALONG ERN PERIPHERY OF UPPER TROUGH...PLUME
OF MID-HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE AND OROGRAPHIC LIFT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO
THE DEVELOPMENT OF AREAS OF PRECIPITATION OVER PARTS OF AZ THROUGH
NM. HOWEVER...LAPSE RATES AND INSTABILITY ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN TOO
LIMITED FOR SIGNIFICANT LIGHTNING ACTIVITY.

..OK...

ZONAL FLOW WILL BECOME ESTABLISHED OVER THE CNTRL AND SRN PLAINS
THURSDAY IN WAKE OF INITIAL SHORTWAVE TROUGH WITH A LEE TROUGH AND
40-50 KT SWLY LOW LEVEL JET FORECAST IN THIS REGION BY THURSDAY
EVENING. WARM ADVECTION AND LIFT ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOW LEVEL JET
AND NEWD EJECTING IMPULSES WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF
PRECIPITATION OVERNIGHT. HOWEVER...WEAK MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND
INSUFFICIENT LOW LEVEL MOISTURE RETURN SUGGEST INSTABILITY WILL
REMAIN TOO MARGINAL FOR THUNDERSTORMS.
