LATEST VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SUGGESTS CONVECTION IS BEGINNING TO
DEEPEN WITHIN UPSLOPE SWLY FLOW ALONG THE SRN MT/ID BORDER WITHIN

CONVECTION MAY DEEPEN SUFFICIENTLY FOR ISOLATED LIGHTING OVER THE
NEXT FEW HOURS...ESPECIALLY AS COLDER MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES SPREAD

WRN U.S. TROUGH WILL DIG SEWD INTO THE CNTRL ROCKIES WEDNESDAY
BEFORE LEADING EDGE OF STRONGER FLOW ROTATES THROUGH SRN NM INTO THE
HIGH PLAINS. THIS FEATURE WILL AID SFC CYCLOGENESIS OVER THE NWRN
TX/OK PANHANDLE REGION BY LATE AFTERNOON WITH A WELL DEFINED COLD
FRONT EXPECTED TO BE DRAPED ACROSS SERN NEB...SWWD INTO SERN CO.
LARGE SCALE FORCING WILL FOCUS STRONGEST CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT
ALONG THE BOUNDARY ACROSS KS AS LOW LEVEL MOISTURE RETURN WILL BE
QUITE LIMITED. LATEST VIS SATELLITE IMAGERY AND OBSERVATIONAL DATA
SUGGEST AIRMASS MODIFICATION CONTINUES OVER THE GULF OF MEXICO. AS
A RESULT...ONLY A NARROW WEDGE OF MODEST MOISTURE RETURN WILL BE
NOTED ACROSS TX/OK INTO KS WHERE STRONG FORCING WILL BE REQUIRED FOR
THUNDERSTORM INITIATION. STRONG HEATING ACROSS THE TX PANHANDLE MAY

VALID 181200Z - 231200Z

..DISCUSSION...
MODELS AGREE THAT UPPER TROUGH MOVING ACROSS THE CENTRAL U.S. DAY 3
WILL EVOLVE INTO A CLOSED LOW AND CONTINUE EWD INTO THE ERN
CONUS...AHEAD OF EXPANDING WRN U.S. TROUGH. HOWEVER...SIGNIFICANT
DIFFERENCES IN TIMING AND LOCATION EXIST AMONGST THE MODELS WITH
RESPECT TO THIS LOW. THIS COMBINED WITH WHAT SHOULD BE ONLY A VERY
MODEST RETURN OF MOISTURE AHEAD OF THIS SYSTEM PRECLUDES
HIGHLIGHTING ANY THREAT AREAS.

MEANWHILE...FAIRLY SUBSTANTIAL MODEL DIFFERENCES ARE ALSO APPARENT
WITH RESPECT TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE LARGE-SCALE WRN TROUGH LATER IN
THE FORECAST PERIOD...AS WELL AS WITH SMALLER-SCALE FEATURES
EJECTING INTO THE CENTRAL CONUS WITHIN THE BROADER CYCLONIC FLOW
AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE. THOUGH IT APPEARS THAT SOME DEGREE OF SEVERE
POTENTIAL EXISTS OVER A MULTIPLE-DAY PERIOD ACROSS PARTS OF THE
PLAINS BEGINNING ROUGHLY DAY 6...WILL NOT HIGHLIGHT ANY THREAT AREAS
ATTM.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0229 AM CDT TUE APR 15 2008

VALID 171200Z - 181200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
MID-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO EMERGE INTO/ACROSS THE CENTRAL CONUS
THIS PERIOD...WITH AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE COLD FRONT PROGGED TO SHIFT
SWD ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS/EWD TOWARD THE MS VALLEY.

..PARTS OF SWRN MO/SERN KS SSWWD INTO PORTIONS OF S TX...
WHILE THE GENERAL SCENARIO CONTINUES TO SUGGEST AT LEAST A MINIMAL
SEVERE THREAT ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE SRN PLAINS AND PERHAPS INTO THE
OZARKS DAY 3...MODELS BECOME INCREASINGLY DIVERGENT THROUGH THE
PERIOD. DIFFERENCES IN THE SPEED AND STRENGTH OF THE UPPER TROUGH
AMONGST THE MODELS RESULT IN A SUBSTANTIAL VARIANCE IN THE LOCATION
OF SURFACE FEATURES -- WITH OVER 200 MILES DIFFERENCE IN FRONTAL
POSITION BY AFTERNOON /CENTRAL OKLAHOMA VERSUS SWRN AR/ BETWEEN THE
SLOWER ECMWF AND THE FASTER NAMKF RUN.

HAVING SAID THAT...MODELS AGREE THAT THE WARM SECTOR WILL BE
CHARACTERIZED BY A MOISTENING BOUNDARY LAYER BENEATH A FAIRLY
SUBSTANTIAL CAPPING INVERSION...WHICH WILL LIKELY LIMIT STORM
DEVELOPMENT TO IMMEDIATELY ON -- OR BEHIND -- THE SURFACE FRONT.
OVERALL DEGREE OF DESTABILIZATION ANTICIPATED ATTM COMBINED WITH
INCREASING MID-LEVEL FLOW ATOP THE WARM SECTOR SUGGESTS AT LEAST
SOME SEVERE THREAT -- PARTICULARLY WITH ANY SURFACE-BASED STORMS
NEAR THE FRONT. HOWEVER...GIVEN THE COMBINATION OF CAPPING -- WHICH
SHOULD HINDER THE OVERALL NUMBER OF WARM SECTOR STORMS -- AND
SIGNIFICANT QUESTIONS REGARDING LOCATION OF THE SURFACE FEATURES --
WILL INTRODUCE A FAIRLY BROAD AREA OF LOW-PROBABILITY SEVERE THREAT.
THIS AREA WILL BE REFINED IN LATER OUTLOOKS -- POSSIBLY INCLUDING
AN UPGRADE TO SLIGHT RISK ONCE DETAILS BECOME CLEARER.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
LARGE UPPER TROUGH IS FORECAST TO SHIFT SLOWLY ACROSS THE ROCKIES
AND BEGIN EMERGING INTO THE PLAINS THIS PERIOD. AT THE SURFACE...AN
ACCOMPANYING COLD FRONT -- TRAILING SWWD FROM A LOW OVER THE NRN
PLAINS/UPPER MS VALLEY REGION -- WILL SHIFT SEWD ACROSS THE PLAINS
STATES WITH TIME. HOWEVER...CYCLOGENESIS EXPECTED ALONG THIS FRONT
OVER THE SRN HIGH PLAINS SHOULD HINDER THE SWD PROGRESSION OF THE
TRAILING PORTION OF THE FRONT...WITH THE BOUNDARY LIKELY TO LINGER
OVER KS/OK OVERNIGHT.

..KS AND VICINITY...
MEAGER BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE RETURN -- OCCURRING BENEATH A FAIRLY
STOUT CAP -- SHOULD HINDER THE POTENTIAL FOR CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT
ACROSS THE WARM SECTOR S OF SURFACE COLD FRONT THIS PERIOD. THE
NE-SW FRONT IS EXPECTED TO SLOW IN ITS SWD PROGRESSION ACROSS ERN
KS/WRN OK DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE PERIOD...AS CYCLOGENESIS
OCCURS OVER THE SRN HIGH PLAINS. WITH NOCTURNAL SSWLY LOW-LEVEL JET
FORECAST TO INCREASE TO NEAR 70 KT OVER WRN OK...INCREASING
LOW-LEVEL THETA-E ADVECTION IN CONJUNCTION WITH STEEP MID-LEVEL
LAPSE RATES SPREADING NEWD ACROSS THIS REGION WILL RESULT IN AT
LEAST MARGINAL ELEVATED DESTABILIZATION. STRENGTHENING ISENTROPIC
LIFT ATOP THE FRONTAL ZONE SHOULD THEREFORE RESULT IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF ELEVATED CONVECTION ACROSS KS THROUGH THE
EVENING/OVERNIGHT. ALONG WITH THE INCREASING
DESTABILIZATION...MID-LEVEL SWLYS AROUND 50 KT WILL RESULT IN SHEAR
SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED/ROTATING STORMS. WITH HAIL THEREFORE
POSSIBLE WITH A FEW STRONGER CELLS...WILL INTRODUCE LOW PROBABILITY
SEVERE THREAT AREA ACROSS KS AND VICINITY.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...

STRONG UPPER TROUGH CURRENTLY MOVING INTO THE PACIFIC NW AND GREAT
BASIN WILL PROGRESS GENERALLY EWD THROUGH THE NRN AND CNTRL
ROCKIES...EVENTUALLY INTO THE NRN/CNTRL HIGH PLAINS TONIGHT INTO
WEDNESDAY MORNING. IN THE LOW LEVELS...ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL
CONCURRENTLY MOVE EWD/SEWD THROUGH THE NRN PLAINS INTO UPPER MS
VALLEY...WITH SWRN EXTENSION OF FRONT PUSHING THROUGH THE CNTRL
ROCKIES INTO CNTRL HIGH PLAINS.

..NRN/CNTRL ROCKIES INTO NRN PLAINS...

15/00Z UPPER-AIR OBSERVATIONS FROM WA/ORE INDICATE THAT MIDLEVEL
TROUGH IS QUITE COLD WITH 500 MB TEMPERATURES OF -30 TO -33C. THE
EWD PROGRESSION OF THIS THERMAL TROUGH COUPLED WITH DIABATIC HEATING
SHOULD SUPPORT SIGNIFICANT STEEPENING OF LAPSE RATES TODAY WITH
POCKETS OF WEAK CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY DEVELOPING. ISOLATED TSTMS
WILL BE POSSIBLE BY THIS AFTERNOON BOTH ALONG FRONT AS WELL AS
WITHIN POST-FRONTAL AIR MASS AS HEIGHT FALLS/DYNAMIC FORCING
ASSOCIATED WITH UPPER SYSTEM OVERSPREAD DESTABILIZING BOUNDARY
LAYER.

THE GREATEST LIKLIHOOD OF A FEW TSTMS APPEARS TO BE OVER PORTIONS OF
WY AND SRN MT THIS AFTERNOON INTO EVENING WHERE AIR MASS IS FORECAST
TO BECOME SLIGHTLY MORE UNSTABLE. A FEW LIGHTNING STRIKES WILL BE
POSSIBLE EWD INTO THE DAKOTAS TONIGHT WHERE FORECAST SOUNDINGS
INDICATE A SMALL AMOUNT OF ELEVATED CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY N OF
SURFACE FRONT.
