DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1112 AM CDT SAT MAY 15 2010

VALID 151630Z - 161200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM LWR MS VALLEY EWD ACROSS
TN VALLEY AND SRN APPALACHIANS...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS SRN PLAINS/LWR RIO GRANDE
VALLEY...

AS STRONG UPPER SYSTEM EXITS NERN U.S....THE LARGE SCALE FLOW
PATTERN BECOMES CONSIDERABLY WEAKER ACROSS THE CONUS. WEAK UPPER
LOW AND ASSOCIATED TROUGH CENTRAL ROCKIES MOVES EWD INTO CENTRAL/SRN
HIGH PLAINS THIS EVENING WHILE DOWNSTREAM RIDGING SHIFTS EWD TO
APPALACHIANS. A COUPLE MCV/S HAVE DEVELOPED OUT OF OVERNIGHT MCS
ACTIVITY. ONE DRIFTING ENEWD CURRENTLY CENTRAL LA WITH ANOTHER
UPSTREAM MOVING EWD TO OFFSHORE CENTRAL TX COAST THIS AFTERNOON.

AT THE SURFACE COLD FRONT HAS PUSHED SEWD TO VICINITY NC/VA BORDER
TRAILING WWD JUST S OF TN/KY BORDER. W OF MS RIVER THE EFFECTIVE
BOUNDARY HAS BEEN PUSHED SWD BY FRI CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY SRN PLAINS
SUCH THAT THE RICHER GULF AIR MASS IS CONFINED TO LOWER MS VALLEY
AND EXTREME S TX.

...LOWER MS VALLEY...
WITH THE ASCENT JUST AHEAD OF THE MCV CENTRAL LA...COUPLED WITH GOOD
HEATING ONGOING OF THE ALREADY MDTLY MOIST/UNSTABLE AIR MASS E OF MS
RIVER...HAVE EXTENDED THE SLGT RISK SWD THRU MS THIS
AFTERNOON...PRIMARILY FOR QUASI-ORGANIZED THUNDERSTORMS NOW MOVING
INTO SWRN MS. WHILE LAPSE RATES ARE GENERALLY LESS THAN
7C/KM...MLCAPES CLIMBING TO AOA 2000 J/KG AND 30KT OF LOW/MID LEVEL
SHEAR WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS BY MID
AFTERNOON...WITH HAIL AND LOCALLY DAMAGING DOWNBURSTS PRIMARY
THREAT.

...TN VALLEY EWD ACROSS SRN APPALACHIANS...
MINIMAL CLOUD COVER TO RETARD HEATING EITHER SIDE OF STALLING
FRONTAL ZONE WHICH WILL ALLOW MUCAPES TO CLIMB TO 2000 J/KG. WITH
THE RELAXATION OF THE UPPER FLOW SINCE FRI ACROSS THE FRONTAL ZONE
BOTH THE SHEAR AND LAPSE RATES WILL BE WEAKER. HOWEVER GIVEN THE
AVAILABLE INSTABILITY COUPLED WITH AROUND 30KT OF DEEP LAYER
SHEAR...SCATTERED STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED AGAIN BY MID
AFTERNOON VICINITY FRONTAL ZONE FROM TN VALLEY EWD ACROSS SRN
APPALACHIANS TO AT LEAST CENTRAL NC.

...SWRN TX...
COMBINATION OF COLD FRONT AND OVERNIGHT CONVECTION HAS PUSHED
COOLER/STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER AIR MASS S AND W THRU MUCH OF SWRN TX.
WITH HEATING AND APPROACH OF MID LEVEL IMPULSE NOW OVER SRN
NM...EXPECT SUFFICIENT RECOVERY EWD TO CONTINUE THE THREAT OF A FEW
STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER SWRN TX MUCH AS DESCRIBED IN THE
13Z OUTLOOK. GIVEN THE INITIAL EXTENSIVE LOW CLOUDS...THE PRIMARY
THREAT PERIOD WILL LIKELY BE DELAYED UNTIL LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING. A FAVORABLE EML WITH LAPSE RATES IN EXCESS OF 7C/KM
REMAIN AVAILABLE ACROSS SRN HI PLAINS...SO THAT ONCE SURFACE BASED
STORMS ARE ABLE TO FORM LATER THIS AFTERNOON...LARGE HAIL WILL AGAIN
BE A THREAT. SHEAR PROFILES WILL REMAIN MARGINAL BUT ISOLATED
SUPERCELLS WILL BE POSSIBLE PARTICULARLY ACROSS THE TRANS-PECOS
REGION.

VALID 151146Z - 151245Z

ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE POSSIBLE FROM NEAR CRP TO PSX AS THUNDERSTORM
LINES MOVES EWD AT 30-35 KT. LIMITED THREAT AREA AND DURATION WILL
PRECLUDE A WW ISSUANCE.

A LINE OF STORMS FROM WEST OF CRP/PSX AREA HAS INTENSIFIED DURING
THE PAST HOUR...WITH EMBEDDED LEWPS SUGGESTIVE OF WIND DAMAGE.
ALTHOUGH DEEP LAYER SHEAR IS NOT PARTICULARLY STRONG...AROUND 30
KT...PW VALUES AROUND 1.75 INCH AND MLCAPE VALUES TO NEAR 1500 J/KG
WOULD SUPPORT HEAVY PCPN AND POTENTIAL FOR STRONG DOWNDRAFTS. THE
WIND THREAT SHOULD EXIST FOR THE NEXT HOUR OR SO BEFORE THE LINE OF

VALID 181200Z - 231200Z

THE MEDIUM RANGE MODELS ARE IN GENERAL AGREEMENT EARLY IN THE DAY 4
TO 8 PERIOD WITH AN UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE IN PLACE ACROSS THE GREAT
PLAINS AND AN UPPER TROUGH LOCATED IN THE WRN STATES. THE ECMWF AND
GFS MOVE THIS FEATURE EWD ACROSS THE ROCKIES ON WEDNESDAY/DAY 5 AND
DEVELOPS A CLOSED UPPER-LEVEL LOW. AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM...A MOIST
WARM SECTOR SHOULD EXIST IN THE SRN PLAINS WITH SUBSTANTIAL SEVERE
POSSIBLE ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE STRONGEST INSTABILITY WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON AND EVENING. ON THURSDAY/DAY 6...THE ECMWF AND GFS
SOLUTIONS DIVERGE WITH THE GFS MUCH MORE AMPLIFIED WITH THE
UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH IN THE PLAINS WITH BOTH MODELS MOVING THE SYSTEM
INTO THE MS VALLEY BY FRIDAY/DAY 7. STRONG THUNDERSTORMS AGAIN WILL
BE POSSIBLE BOTH THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AHEAD OF THE UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH. ATTM...ORGANIZATION WITH THE UPPER-LEVEL SYSTEM IN THE CNTRL
U.S. DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE GREAT ENOUGH FOR A SEVERE WEATHER THREAT
AREA DURING THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF WEST TX...

...WEST TX...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE SRN PLAINS IS FORECAST TO MOVE EWD
INTO THE OZARKS AS AN UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE MOVES INTO THE ROCKIES.
NORTHWEST FLOW SHOULD BE IN PLACE ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS WITH AN AXIS
OF MODERATE TO STRONG INSTABILITY LOCATED ACROSS WEST TX. THE MODEL
FORECASTS ARE IN SOMEWHAT AGREEMENT DEVELOPING THUNDERSTORMS MONDAY
AFTERNOON ALONG THE WRN EDGE OF INSTABILITY AS THE CAP WEAKENS
DURING THE AFTERNOON. FORECAST SOUNDINGS AT 00Z ACROSS WEST TX SHOW
ABOUT 40 KT OF DEEP LAYER SHEAR MAINLY DUE TO SUBSTANTIAL
DIRECTIONAL SHEAR IN THE LOW TO MID-LEVELS. THIS ALONG WITH STEEP
MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES SHOULD PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT SUPPORTIVE OF
SUPERCELLS AND LARGE HAIL. THE MAIN CONCERN FOR THE SLIGHT RISK AREA
IS THAT FORCING ACROSS THE REGION SHOULD REMAIN WEAK WHICH MAY KEEP
CONVECTIVE COVERAGE ISOLATED.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1259 AM CDT SAT MAY 15 2010

VALID 151200Z - 161200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF SW TX...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER THE MID-SOUTH/TN VLY...

...SYNOPSIS...
PERSISTENT UPR TROUGH ACROSS THE WRN STATES WILL GRADUALLY BEGIN
MOVING INTO THE PLAINS SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT. AHEAD OF THE
SYSTEM...A LEAD SHORTWAVE TROUGH/MULTIPLE MCVS WILL CONTINUE ENE
FROM PARTS OF E TX/AR TOWARD THE LWR OH VLY DURING THE AFTN.
UPSTREAM...ANOTHER IMPULSE SHOULD TRAVEL FROM ALONG THE AZ/SONORA
BORDER TO THE SRN HIGH PLAINS BY LATE AFTN.

IN THE LWR LVLS...THE CDFNT FOLLOWING A DEPARTING UPR WAVE FROM THE
NERN COAST WILL SETTLE SWD INTO NC AND TN...BUT BEGIN RETURNING NWD
ACROSS AR AND TX AHEAD OF THE APPROACHING LARGER SCALE WRN STATES
TROUGH.

...SRN HIGH PLAINS AND SW TX...
TSTMS HAVE QUICKLY DEVELOPED IN WAKE OF THE LATE FRIDAY EVE MCS...
PROBABLY IN RESPONSE TO THE APPROACHING JETLET OVER SRN AZ. THIS
WILL LIKELY MAINTAIN A CONVECTIVELY-ENHANCED OUTFLOW/COOLER BOUNDARY
LAYER OVER SW TX THROUGH FRI AFTN. MORNING ACTIVITY SHOULD CONTINUE
ENE AND GRADUALLY WEAKEN AWAY FROM THE STEEPER LAPSE RATE
ENVIRONMENT DURING THE MIDDAY HOURS.

ADDITIONAL STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO FORM OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF
SRN CO...NM AND SW TX DURING PEAK HEATING. STRONGEST
INSTABILITY/HEATING WILL EVOLVE IN SE NM AND SW TX AND AS WEAK
HEIGHT FALLS CONTINUE THROUGH THE AFTN ALONG THE BASE OF THE WRN
TROUGH...STORMS WILL MATURE INTO SUPERCELLS WITH LARGE HAIL AMIDST
DEEP LAYER SHEAR OF 35-40 KTS. ACTIVITY WILL PROBABLY DEVELOP INTO
AN MCS...PROGRESSING ESE INTO A WEAK SELY LLJ/LLVL THETA-E AXIS
TOWARD THE SRN/ERN EDWARDS PLATEAU DURING THE EVENING. SPORADIC
LARGE HAIL AND HIGH WINDS CAN BE EXPECTED THROUGH LATE EVENING
BEFORE WEAKENING.

FARTHER N...THE ISOLD STORMS THAT DEVELOP OVER NM/SRN CO IN
COMPARATIVELY WEAKER INSTABILITY WILL STILL POSE AN ISOLD LARGE
HAIL/GUSTY WIND THREAT. HERE...MID-LVL TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO
THE MID-MINUS TEENS WITH MRGL SHEAR PROFILES TO SUPPORT BRIEF STORM
ORGANIZATION. THIS ACTIVITY WILL EVENTUALLY DEVELOP ENE INTO THE TX
PNHDL AND OK THROUGH EARLY MORNING SUNDAY.

...MID-SOUTH/TN VLY...
NOCTURNAL TSTMS ASSOCD WITH APPARENT MULTIPLE MCVS SHOULD BE ONGOING
FROM PARTS OF ERN AR AND NRN LA AT THE START OF THE PD. THESE
FEATURES SHOULD BEGIN MOVING ENE TOWARD THE MID-SOUTH SATURDAY
MORNING WITH ATTENDANT SSWLY 35-40 KTS OF MID-LVL FLOW. DOWNSTREAM
AIR MASS SHOULD BEGIN TO RECOVER AND HEAT SUFFICIENTLY TO SUPPORT
TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG ERN PERIPHERY OF CLOUD/PCPN CANOPY FROM PARTS
OF NRN MS INTO THE LWR OH VLY BY AFTN. THERE SHOULD BE MRGLLY
SUPPORTIVE THERMODYNAMIC/KINEMATIC PROFILES FOR BRIEF SUPERCELL
ORGANIZATION...BUT MOST LIKELY MULTICELL CLUSTERS CAPABLE OF DMGG
WINDS...HAIL AND PERHAPS A BRIEF TORNADO. THESE THREATS WILL EXTEND
TO SCNTRL KY AND MIDDLE TN DURING THE LATE AFTN/EARLY EVE WITH A
GRADUAL DECREASE IN SVR THREATS.

...NC...
REGION WILL EXPERIENCE SLIGHT LARGE SCALE RIDGING IN WAKE OF THE
DEPARTING NERN TROUGH BY SATURDAY AFTN. NONETHELESS...THE AIR MASS
WILL BECOME UNSTABLE OWING TO HEATING AND MID 60S DEW POINTS BENEATH
MODEST MID-TROPOSPHERIC LAPSE RATES ALONG/S OF THE STALLING FRONT.
WEAK CONVERGENCE INVOF THE FRONT WILL PROBABLY CONTRIBUTE TO WDLY
SCTD TSTMS DURING PEAK HEATING. DESPITE THE STORMS DEVELOPING IN
ONLY 30 KTS OF 0-6KM SHEAR...FCST SOUNDINGS DO SUGGEST POTENTIAL FOR
ISOLD DMGG WIND GUSTS WITH THE STRONGER MULTICELL STORMS.

VALID 161200Z - 171200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE SRN
PLAINS...

...SRN PLAINS/MID-MS VALLEY...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL MOVE EWD ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS SUNDAY.
AHEAD OF THE TROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...MODEL FORECASTS HAVE A CLUSTER
OF ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS IN OKLAHOMA AND NORTH TX MOVING THE
CLUSTER EWD AWAY FROM THE SLIGHT RISK AREA BY MIDDAY. IN THE WAKE OF
THIS CONVECTION...MODEL FORECASTS DEVELOP MODERATE INSTABILITY
ACROSS PARTS OF WEST AND CNTRL TX SUNDAY AFTERNOON. SCATTERED
SFC-BASED THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD DEVELOP AS DESTABILIZATION OCCURS.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS AT 21Z IN WCNTRL TX SHOW MODERATE DEEP LAYER
SHEAR ENHANCED BY SUBSTANTIAL DIRECTIONAL SHEAR IN THE LOW-LEVELS.
THIS COMBINED WITH STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES SUGGESTS THE
ENVIRONMENT MAY SUPPORT SUPERCELL DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER...MODEL
FORECASTS ARE NOT AS IN GOOD AGREEMENT AS LAST NIGHT WITH THE NAM
SHOWING WEAKER INSTABILITY AND SEVERAL MODELS KEEPING CONVECTIVE
COVERAGE MORE ISOLATED. FOR THIS REASON...UNCERTAINTY EXISTS
CONCERNING THE SLIGHT RISK AREA IN WCNTRL TX. ATTM...WILL LEAVE THE
SLIGHT IN PLACE BUT REDUCE THE AREAL EXTENT.

FURTHER EAST NORTHEAST ACROSS THE OZARKS AND MID-MS VALLY...THE
MODELS SHOW AN AXIS OF INSTABILITY LOCATED ALONG THE NRN EDGE OF
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE WHERE SFC DEWPOINTS SHOULD BE IN THE MID 60S F.
AS SFC TEMPS WARM SUNDAY...SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD DEVELOP
ALONG THIS CORRIDOR IN A MODERATELY SHEARED ENVIRONMENT. DUE TO THIS
ALONG WITH STEEP LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES IN THE AFTERNOON...THE
STRONGER CORES MAY HAVE A MARGINAL WIND DAMAGE THREAT.
