VALID 300100Z - 301200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..CNTRL CA...
THE LATEST WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS THE AXIS OF AN UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH JUST OFF THE CA COAST. THIS FEATURE WILL MOVE INLAND THIS
EVENING AND CONTINUE TO SPREAD STRONG LARGE-SCALE ASCENT AND COLD
AIR ALOFT ACROSS THE REGION TONIGHT SUPPORTING SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS
THUNDERSTORMS. OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS CURRENTLY INDICATES THE EXISTENCE
OF STEEP MID-LEVEL RATES...MODERATE VERTICAL SHEAR AND ENOUGH
INSTABILITY ACROSS CNTRL CA FOR A MARGINAL SEVERE THREAT. THE THREAT
SHOULD BE CONFINED TO THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY OF CNTRL CA AND THE
STRONGER CELLS MAY CONTAIN HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS. HOWEVER...SFC TEMPS
ARE ALREADY COOLING ACROSS CNTRL CA AND THIS WILL REDUCE INSTABILITY
OVER THE NEXT 1 TO 2 HOURS. IN RESPONSE...THE SEVERE THREAT SHOULD
GRADUALLY DIMINISH THIS EVENING ACROSS THE REGION.

ELSEWHERE...A QUASI-STATIONARY FRONTAL BOUNDARY IS IN PLACE ACROSS
CNTRL FL. CONVERGENCE ALONG THE BOUNDARY COMBINED WITH SUBTLE LIFT
ASSOCIATED WITH A PLUME OF MID-LEVEL MOISTURE EVIDENT ON WATER VAPOR
IMAGERY MAY SUPPORT ISOLATED TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT
THIS EVENING AND POSSIBLY OVERNIGHT.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2139

0246 PM CDT MON OCT 29 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...SIERRA NEVADA RANGE

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 291946Z - 292115Z

TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE ACROSS DISCUSSION AREA
THIS AFTERNOON WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL
WITH THE MOST INTENSE CORES. A WW IS NOT ANTICIPATED.

A PLUME OF RELATIVELY STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES OF 7-8 C/KM
COUPLED WITH DAYTIME HEATING ARE CONTRIBUTING TO AIR MASS
DESTABILIZATION OVER THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY EWD INTO SIERRA NEVADAS
WHERE MUCAPES HAVE INCREASED TO 500-1000 J/KG. RECENT TRENDS IN
RADAR...SATELLITE AND LIGHTNING DATA SETS INDICATE TSTMS SLOWLY
INCREASING IN AREAL COVERAGE OVER THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY...NAMELY
GLENN...TEHAMA AND MORE RECENTLY SACRAMENTO COUNTIES. FORCING FOR
ASCENT ATTENDANT TO MOBILE UPPER TROUGH APPROACHING THE CA COAST
APPEARS TO BE THE PRIMARY MECHANISM SUPPORTING THIS MORE RECENT
STORM DEVELOPMENT.

AS THIS SYSTEM CONTINUES EWD...EXPECT AN INCREASE IN STORM COVERAGE
OVER PORTIONS OF THE SACRAMENTO INTO SAN JOAQUIN VALLEYS...AND
EVENTUALLY THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE SIERRAS. RUC PROXIMITY
FORECAST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST THAT AMBIENT THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT
OVER THE SIERRAS WILL BE MOST FAVORABLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A
COUPLE MARGINALLY SEVERE STORMS CAPABLE OF SOME HAIL. THIS THREAT
SHOULD TEND TO DIMINISH BY MID TO LATE EVENING AS BOUNDARY LAYER
COOLS AND STABILIZES.

STRONG SUNSHINE APPEARS TO BE MOSTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR RECENT INCREASE
IN THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY ACROSS THE NRN MOUNTAINS OF CA INTO SRN
ORE/NWRN NV. ADDITIONALLY...A FEW THUNDERSTORMS HAVE RECENTLY
DEVELOPED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY WHERE SFC
TEMPERATURES HAVE WARMED INTO THE LOWER 70S. CONVECTION SHOULD
PERSIST INTO THE EVENING HOURS UNTIL STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT
BEGINS TO WEAKEN WITH LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING. PRIOR TO BOUNDARY
LAYER COOLING...LARGE SCALE BACKGROUND ASCENT...DUE TO APPROACHING
SHORTWAVE...SHOULD ENHANCE THUNDERSTORM UPDRAFTS...ESPECIALLY OVER
THE HIGHER TERRAIN WHERE STORMS COULD PRODUCE AT LEAST SMALL
HAIL...WITH A FEW APPROACHING SEVERE LEVELS. OVER THE NEXT FEW
HOURS THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD BEGIN TO DEVELOP SWD ALONG THE SIERRA
RANGE BEFORE SPREADING NEWD INTO WRN NV.

VERY MOIST...BUT POOR LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT CONTINUES ACROSS FL
WITHIN DEEP ENELY FLOW REGIME. ALTHOUGH WIDESPREAD CONVECTION WILL

TROPICAL STORM NOEL IS EXPECTED TO LIFT SLOWLY NWD ACROSS THE

AS IT ENCOUNTERS SRN FRINGE OF DEEPER WLY FLOW ALOFT. WITH CENTER
OF CIRCULATION EXPECTED TO REMAIN WELL EAST OF THE SRN FL

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1126 AM CDT MON OCT 29 2007

VALID 291630Z - 301200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..NORTHERN/CENTRAL CA INTO SOUTHERN ORE/WESTERN NV...
LATEST WATER VAPOR IMAGERY FEATURES UPPER LOW TRANSITIONING EASTWARD
ABOUT 300 MILES WEST OF THE CA COAST...CENTERED NEAR 33N/126.5W AS
OF 16Z. INCREASING LARGE SCALE ASCENT/OROGRAPHIC LIFT WILL LEAD TO
AN INCREASE IN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER PORTIONS OF
NORTHERN/CENTRAL CA AND SOUTHERN ORE/WESTERN NV TODAY. SIMILAR TO
12Z OBSERVED REGIONAL SOUNDINGS...LATEST GPS-IPW DATA INDICATES A
STEADY INCREASE IN MOISTURE AHEAD OF THE UPPER TROUGH...WITH
PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES GENERALLY AROUND 1 INCH ALONG AND WEST OF
THE SIERRAS IN NORTHERN/CENTRAL CA. AS THE UPPER COLD POCKET /AROUND
-18C AT 500 MB/ GRADUALLY APPROACHES...SHORT-TERM FORECAST SOUNDINGS
SUGGEST STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES OF 7.5-8 C/KM WILL EXIST ABOVE A
STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER. GRADUAL MOISTENING/SOME HEATING WILL SUPPORT
POCKETS OF MUCAPE AROUND 500 J/KG. MODEST TOTAL BUOYANCY/VERTICAL
SHEAR WILL LARGELY LIMIT THE OVERALL THREAT...BUT IT APPEARS THE
STRONGER STORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF MAINLY SUB-SEVERE HAIL IN THE
VICINITY OF THE NORTHERN/CENTRAL SIERRA MOUNTAINS.

..FL...
THUNDERSTORMS WILL REMAIN A POSSIBILITY ALONG/SOUTH OF THE REMNANT
FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS THE FL PENINSULA AND ADJACENT COASTAL WATERS.
SIMILAR TO YESTERDAY...DEEPLY SATURATED THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES AND
WEAK LAPSE RATES/VERTICAL SHEAR ARE EXPECTED TO LIMIT UPDRAFT
VIGOR...AND THUS SEVERE STORMS ARE NOT EXPECTED.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0749 AM CDT MON OCT 29 2007

VALID 291300Z - 301200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
A STRONG SHORT WAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE ACROSS NRN/CNTRL CA THROUGH
TODAY BEFORE SHEARING EWD OVER THE GREAT BASIN...AND GRADUALLY
PHASING WITH A LOWER AMPLITUDE IMPULSE SPREADING INLAND ACROSS THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST. MEANWHILE...BROAD UPPER RIDGE ENCOMPASSING MUCH
OF THE CNTRL U.S. WILL SHIFT EAST TO THE GREAT LAKES AND OH VALLEY.
EXTENSIVE SURFACE ANTICYCLONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE RIDGE ALOFT WILL
PERSIST FROM THE NORTHEAST TO THE MIDWEST TO THE SRN PLAINS. THE
TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT BETWEEN THE LARGE SURFACE HIGH AND LOWER
PRESSURE OVER THE CARIBBEAN WITH TROPICAL STORM NOEL WILL MAINTAIN
HIGH ONSHORE WINDS ALONG THE EAST COAST AND OVER THE ERN GULF OF
MEXICO.

..CA/ORE...
STRENGTHENING SYNOPTIC SCALE ASCENT SHOULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN
SHOWERS AND TSTMS OVER PORTIONS OF NRN CA/SRN ORE TODAY. GPS WATER
VAPOR DATA INDICATED A STEADY INCREASE IN MOISTURE AHEAD OF THE
TROUGH WITH PW VALUES GENERALLY OVER 1 INCH. RECENT SHORT-TERM
FORECAST SOUNDINGS ALSO SUGGEST STEEP 850-500MB LAPSE RATES IN THE
RANGE OF 7.5-8 C/KM ABOVE A STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER. MOISTENING AND
LIFT WITHIN/BENEATH LEFT EXIT REGION OF STRONG UPPER JET TRANSLATING
INLAND ACROSS THE CNTRL SIERRA THIS AFTERNOON COULD SUPPORT POCKETS
OF MUCAPE AROUND 500 J/KG IF RUC AND NAM FORECASTS ARE CORRECT.
GIVEN STRENGTH OF LARGE SCALE FORCING AND POSSIBILITY OF SOME
DESTABILIZATION...A FEW STRONGER STORMS WITH HAIL APPEAR POSSIBLE.

..FL...
STRONG LOW LEVEL ELY FLOW AND MASS CONVERGENCE FOCUSED ALONG
RESIDUAL FRONTAL ZONE ON THE SRN PERIPHERY OF ERN STATES ANTICYCLONE
WILL MAINTAIN THE CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AND STORMS OVER SECTIONS OF
NRN/CNTRL FL EAST COAST TODAY. WIDESPREAD CLOUDS AND SHOWERS WILL
RESULT IN DEEPLY SATURATED THERMODYNAMIC PROFILES AND GENERALLY WEAK
LAPSE RATES NOT CONDUCIVE TO STRONG STORM UPDRAFTS. GIVEN STRENGTH
OF LOW LEVEL SHEAR...AND THE POTENTIAL FOR THIS SHEAR TO INCREASE
FARTHER SOUTH TOWARD POTENTIALLY MORE UNSTABLE AIR MASS WITH
TIME...AN ISOLATED TORNADO/WATERSPOUT CANNOT BE COMPLETELY RULED
OUT. HOWEVER...THE PROBABILITY OF THIS THREAT STILL APPEARS QUITE
LOW AT THIS TIME.

..SEVERE POTENTIAL APPEARS LOW INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK...

MEDIUM RANGE FORECAST GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO INDICATE AMPLIFICATION
WITHIN THE UPPER FLOW ACROSS THE U.S. LATE THIS WEEK...WITH A
LARGE-SCALE TROUGH EVOLVING OVER THE EASTERN STATES BY THE WEEKEND.
AMPLITUDE MAY DIMINISH LATE IN THE WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT
WEEK...BUT AT LEAST A BROAD UPPER TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO PERSIST
ACROSS MOST AREAS EAST OF THE ROCKIES. IN ASSOCIATION WITH THIS
PATTERN...A SERIES OF COLD INTRUSIONS TO THE LEE OF THE
ROCKIES...THROUGH THE SOUTH CENTRAL/SOUTHEASTERN STATES...WILL
CONTINUE TO PRECLUDE A SIGNIFICANT RETURN FLOW OFF THE GULF OF
MEXICO...WHILE ALSO SLOWLY CONTRIBUTING TO A GENERAL DRYING/COOLING
OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER OVER THE GULF OF MEXICO.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
IT CURRENTLY APPEARS MOST PROBABLE THAT TROPICAL STORM NOEL...OR ITS
REMNANTS...WILL TURN INCREASINGLY TOWARD THE NORTHEAST...ACROSS THE
BAHAMAS WEDNESDAY/WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THIS IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR AS A
FAIRLY STRONG SURFACE HIGH CONTINUES TO RETREAT OFF NORTH ATLANTIC
COASTAL AREAS. AN ASSOCIATED RIDGE AXIS EXTENDING WEST
SOUTHWESTWARD THROUGH THE GULF STATES IS PROGGED TO FINALLY WEAKEN.
BUT...MODELS INDICATE THAT A SIGNIFICANT NEW SURFACE RIDGE WILL
EXPAND SOUTHEAST OF THE HIGH PLAINS...TOWARD THE GULF STATES AND
ATLANTIC SEABOARD...IN THE WAKE OF A VIGOROUS NORTHERN STREAM SHORT
WAVE TROUGH SHIFTING ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION.

SEVERE POTENTIAL ACROSS THE U.S. SEEMS LIKELY TO REMAIN LOW THROUGH

AN UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE WILL GRADUALLY WEAKEN ACROSS THE PLAINS STATES
AS AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH APPROACHES THE WEST COAST TODAY. IN
RESPONSE...LARGE-SCALE ASCENT WILL INCREASE ACROSS CA...NV AND ORE
WHICH COMBINED WITH COLD AIR ALOFT IN THE CORE OF THE TROUGH WILL
SUPPORT SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT THIS AFTERNOON.
ELSEWHERE...A FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL REMAIN OVER SCNTRL FL AND MOVE
SLOWLY SWD TODAY. LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE ALONG THE BOUNDARY AND SFC
HEATING SHOULD ALLOW SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP THIS

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
MODELS INDICATE THAT A LARGELY ZONAL SPLIT UPPER FLOW WILL PERSIST
ACROSS THE U.S. THROUGH THIS FORECAST PERIOD. WITHIN THIS REGIME
..INCREASINGLY SHEARED REMNANTS OF A CLOSED LOW...NOW APPROACHING
CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COASTAL AREAS...ARE PROGGED TO SPREAD ACROSS THE
CENTRAL ROCKIES AND CENTRAL PLAINS. THIS IS EXPECTED TO ACCOMPANY A
VIGOROUS NORTHERN STREAM SHORT WAVE TROUGH...LIKELY TO DIG EAST
SOUTHEAST OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES INTO THE CENTRAL CANADIAN/ U.S.
BORDER AREA BY LATE TUESDAY NIGHT. AT THE SAME TIME...ANOTHER
IMPULSE WITHIN THE WEAKER SOUTHERN BRANCH IS PROGGED TO DIG ACROSS
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA INTO THE VICINITY OF THE SIERRA NEVADA. AND...
TROPICAL STORM NOEL IS EXPECTED TO MIGRATE ACROSS EASTERN CUBA...
TOWARD THE BAHAMAS...AHEAD OF A WEAK TROUGH IN THE SUBTROPICAL BELT
..SLOWLY PROGRESSING THROUGH THE GULF STATES.

..FLORIDA PENINSULA...
THE OUTLOOK IS SIGNIFICANTLY DEPENDENT UPON THE TRACK OF NOEL.
BUT...THE BOUNDARY LAYER ACROSS SOUTHEAST COASTAL AREAS IS EXPECTED
TO REMAIN MOIST...NEARLY SATURATED AND AT LEAST WEAKLY POSITIVELY
BUOYANT. THIS COULD BE SUPPORTIVE OF ISOLATED TORNADIC/DAMAGING
WIND POTENTIAL IN DEVELOPING CONVECTION...GIVEN SUFFICIENT
STRENGTHENING OF THE LOW-LEVEL SHEAR. AND...IT STILL APPEARS
POSSIBLE THAT THIS MAY OCCUR LATE TUESDAY/TUESDAY NIGHT...EVEN WELL
IN ADVANCE OF NOEL...BEFORE THE TROPICAL SYSTEM TURNS INCREASINGLY
TOWARD THE NORTHEAST...AS IT HEADS TOWARD THE BAHAMAS.

..REMAINDER OF THE NATION EAST OF THE ROCKIES...
WITH SURFACE RIDGING STILL FORECAST TO BE SLOW TO WEAKEN ACROSS THE
GULF STATES...A SIGNIFICANT RETURN FLOW OFF THE GULF OF MEXICO IS
UNLIKELY TUESDAY/TUESDAY NIGHT. AND...CONVECTIVE POTENTIAL APPEARS
NEGLIGIBLE.

..N CNTRL PAC COAST STATES...
DESTABILIZATION NEAR 500 MB -20C COLD CORE...ASSOCIATED WITH DIGGING
SHORT WAVE IMPULSE...MAY BE SUFFICIENT FOR SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM
