DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 191608
SWODY1
SPC AC 191605

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1105 AM CDT FRI OCT 19 2007

VALID 191630Z - 201200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING FROM
NY/PA SWD TO THE SE ATLANTIC COAST...

..APPALACHIANS TO THE ATLANTIC COAST TODAY INTO TONIGHT...
A DEEP OCCLUDED LOW OVER LAKE SUPERIOR WILL MOVE NNEWD TOWARD JAMES
BAY WHILE AN ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT /LOCATED FROM CENTRAL AL TO
CENTRAL OH AS OF 15Z/ PROGRESSES EWD ACROSS THE APPALACHIANS LATER
TODAY. THE FRONT IS PRECEDED BY A BROAD LOW-MID LEVEL MOISTURE
PLUME FROM THE SE ATLANTIC STATES INTO NEW ENGLAND. MID LEVEL LAPSE
RATES ARE ALSO LIMITED TO AOB 6 C/KM WITHIN THIS MOISTURE PLUME
BASED ON 12Z SOUNDINGS...WHILE WIDESPREAD CLOUDS WILL KEEP SURFACE
TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. THE NET RESULT WILL
BE A WARM SECTOR CHARACTERIZED BY MOIST PROFILES AND MLCAPE VALUES
AOB 500 J/KG.

THE STRONGER LOW-LEVEL FLOW AND ASSOCIATED VERTICAL SHEAR WILL
DEVELOP NEWD TOWARD THE NRN CHESAPEAKE/ERN PA/ERN NY AREA THIS
AFTERNOON AS THE PRIMARY MID LEVEL TROUGH LIFTS NNEWD TOWARD WRN
NY/SWRN ONTARIO BY THIS EVENING. VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES WILL BE
FAVORABLE FOR ORGANIZED SEVERE STORMS...INCLUDING SUPERCELLS AND BOW
ECHOES...BASED ON FORECAST HODOGRAPHS WITH 0-1 KM SRH OF 200-300
M2/S2 AND EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR IN EXCESS OF 40 KT. ANY PERSISTENT
DISCRETE STORMS IN THE MOIST/WEAKLY UNSTABLE ENVIRONMENT MAY PRODUCE
A TORNADO OR TWO. HOWEVER...THE POOR LAPSE RATES/WEAK INSTABILITY
WILL TEND TO LIMIT THE OVERALL MAGNITUDE OF THIS SEVERE STORM
THREAT...AND THE PRIMARY THREAT SHOULD BE ISOLATED-WIDELY SCATTERED
DAMAGING WINDS WITH THE BAND OF STORMS ALONG THE FRONT.

FARTHER S...STRONGER SURFACE HEATING WILL OCCUR ACROSS N FL AND THE
ERN CAROLINAS IN ADVANCE OF THE PRE-FRONTAL CONVECTION. WIND
PROFILES ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME MORE UNIDIRECTIONAL WITH TIME ACROSS
THIS AREA...WITH ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS THE MAIN THREAT THIS
AFTERNOON.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 191250
SWODY1
SPC AC 191247

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0747 AM CDT FRI OCT 19 2007

VALID 191300Z - 201200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER MUCH OF THE EASTERN
U.S....

..SYNOPSIS...
OCCLUDING SURFACE LOW IS FORECAST TO LIFT NNEWD INTO ONTARIO AS
UPPER TROUGH EJECTS NEWD THROUGH THE ERN STATES. AT THE
SURFACE...ATTENDANT COLD FRONT WILL CONTINUE EWD AND MOVE OFF THE
ATLANTIC SEABOARD BY LATE TONIGHT. AHEAD OF THE FRONT...RESERVOIR
OF UNSEASONABLY WARM AND MOIST AIR IS ALREADY IN PLACE FROM THE SERN
ATLANTIC STATES INTO ERN NY. 12Z SOUNDINGS AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM
INDICATE DEEP MOIST LAYER/SATURATED PROFILES WITH WEAK LAPSE RATES
ACROSS THE REGION.

..MID ATLANTIC THROUGH NERN STATES...
DESPITE NWD ADVECTION OF MID TO UPPER 60S LOW LEVEL DEWPOINTS...THE
PRE-FRONTAL WARM SECTOR SHOULD REMAIN ONLY MARGINALLY UNSTABLE DUE
TO EXPECTED WIDESPREAD CLOUDS AND WEAK MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES.
DESPITE THESE THERMODYNAMIC WEAKNESSES...SHEAR REMAINS VERY STRONG.
RESULTANT SCENARIO WILL THEREFORE BE QUITE MESSY TODAY AS STORM
CLUSTERS EVOLVE ACROSS A LARGE PORTION OF THE WARM SECTOR WITHIN
ZONE OF INCREASING UPPER DIVERGENCE AND LOW LEVEL CONFLUENCE
ASSOCIATED WITH NEWD EJECTING SHORTWAVE TROUGH. VERTICAL SHEAR
PROFILES AND LOW LEVEL HODOGRAPHS WILL SUPPORT POTENTIAL FOR
SUPERCELLS/LINES...WITH POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES. ACTIVITY
WILL SHIFT EWD TOWARD THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD AND WEAKEN FRIDAY
EVENING.

..NRN FL THROUGH SRN GA AND THE CAROLINAS...
RICH LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WITH DEWPOINTS NEAR 70 WILL REMAIN OVER THIS
REGION. HOWEVER...PLUME OF DEEP MOISTURE WITH PWS NEAR 2 INCHES WILL
PERSIST AND SPREAD NEWD THROUGH WARM SECTOR...CONTRIBUTING TO AREAS
OF WIDESPREAD CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION. EXPECTED MOIST ADIABATIC
PROFILES AND WIDESPREAD CLOUDS WILL LIKELY LIMIT INSTABILITY DURING
THE DAY WITH MLCAPE AOB 1000 J/KG ALONG WITH WEAK LAPSE RATES.
MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST A SECONDARY LOW LEVEL JET WILL STRENGTHEN
FROM PARTS OF SRN GA THROUGH THE ERN CAROLINAS AS SRN BRANCH OF
SHORTWAVE TROUGH ADVANCES EWD DURING THE DAY. DEEP LAYER SHEAR OF
35 TO 45 KT WILL SUPPORT POTENTIAL FOR ORGANIZED STORMS INCLUDING
SUPERCELLS AND LINE SEGMENTS WITH BOW ECHOES. THE MAIN THREATS WILL
BE ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND/TORNADOES. HOWEVER...OVERALL THREAT MAY BE
LIMITED BY THE EXPECTED MARGINAL THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT.

ACUS48 KWNS 190820
SWOD48
SPC AC 190819

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0319 AM CDT FRI OCT 19 2007

VALID 221200Z - 271200Z

..DISCUSSION...
WHILE THE 19/00Z GFS AND ECMWF WERE CONSISTENT IN MAINTAINING A DEEP
CLOSED LOW OVER THE SRN/CENTRAL PLAINS MOST OF THE FORECAST
PERIOD...BOTH 12Z RUNS WERE MORE PROGRESSIVE WITH A DEEP TROUGH
SHIFTING EWD INTO THE ERN PORTIONS OF THE COUNTRY BY MID WEEK.
LATEST MREF MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLES THE 18/12Z GFS/EURO WITH A DEEP
TROUGH MOVING EWD INTO THE ERN STATES WED/THU. ALTHOUGH THE CLOSED
LOW SOLUTION WOULD RESULT IN A BAROTROPIC SITUATION AND LOW THREAT
FOR SEVERE...THE DEEP PROGRESSIVE TROUGH SOLUTION WOULD FAVOR A
THREAT FOR SEVERE STORMS ALONG THE CENTRAL/ERN GULF COASTAL STATES
MON-WED. HOWEVER...THE EXTREME MODEL VARIABILITY FROM RUN TO RUN
PRECLUDES A SEVERE WEATHER THREAT AREA.
