SVR POTENTIAL IS INCREASING IN POCKET OF MOIST...DIABATICALLY
HEATED/DESTABILIZED AIR...LOCATED AHEAD OF CURRENTLY NON-SVR TSTM
CLUSTER MOVING ENEWD ABOUT 35 KT ACROSS CENTRAL ND. WW MAY BE
REQUIRED FOR THIS AREA. ADDITIONALLY...POST-FRONTAL TSTMS OVER NWRN

HOWEVER...ACTIVITY MAY EXPAND AND BECOME BETTER ORGANIZED AS IT
MOVES EWD INTO MORE BACKED SFC WINDS...STRONGER STORM-RELATIVE SFC
FLOW AND HIGHER LOW-LEVEL SRH ALONG/E OF CONFLUENCE LINE. BOW
ECHOES ARE POSSIBLE...AND ANY RELATIVELY DISCRETE SUPERCELL THAT MAY
DEVELOP WILL BE CAPABLE OF LARGE/DAMAGING HAIL GIVEN FAVORABLE SHEAR

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN WY...SWRN ND AND WRN SD

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 261924Z - 262030Z

THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE ACROSS PORTIONS
OF NERN WY...SERN MT AND WRN SD INTO THE EVENING HOURS.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS APPEAR FAVORABLE FOR SOME STORMS TO BECOME
SEVERE AND A WW IS LIKELY IN THE NEXT HOUR OR SO.

UPPER TROUGH STRETCHED FROM NERN MT SWWD INTO WRN WY AND APPEARED TO
BE AIDING THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT OVER THE HIGH TERRAIN OF NRN WY
AND SERN MT AND THE BLACK HILLS. DESPITE MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES OVER
MUCH OF THE AREA INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS...THE CLOUDS ARE
THINNING. THIS WARMING COMBINED WITH COOLING ALOFT AND STEEP LAPSE
RATES ARE RESULTING IN STRONG INSTABILITY....WITH MLCAPES FROM
2000-3000 J/KG. ALONG WITH THIS DEGREE OF INSTABILITY...THE
INCREASING LARGE SCALE LIFTING AND EFFECTIVE SHEAR AT 40 KT WOULD BE
SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS WITH SEVERE HAIL AND WIND DAMAGE.

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1229 PM CDT SAT JUN 26 2010

VALID 271200Z - 281200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES
REGION/MIDWEST TO NORTHEAST STATES...

...SYNOPSIS...
MODELS REMAIN CONSISTENT SHOWING WLY FLOW ALOFT THAT HAS BEEN IN
PLACE ALONG THE NRN TIER OF THE U.S. WILL BEGIN AMPLIFYING ON
SUNDAY. THIS TREND IS EXPECTED AS PART OF THE LARGE MID-UPPER LEVEL
VORTEX CENTERED OVER NRN QUEBEC THIS MORNING RETROGRADES WSWWD
ACROSS HUDSON BAY INTO NRN ONTARIO/MANITOBA REGION. HEIGHT RISES
FROM THE NRN HIGH PLAINS TO SASKATCHEWAN...DOWNSTREAM OF UPPER
TROUGH MOVING INTO THE PACIFIC NW...WILL SUPPORT AMPLIFICATION OF A
SEWD MOVING SHORTWAVE TROUGH THROUGH THE UPPER MIDWEST TO THE WRN
GREAT LAKES. MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST MULTIPLE MIDLEVEL IMPULSES
WILL MOVE ENEWD ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES/ OH VALLEY TO NERN STATES IN
ADVANCE OF THE AMPLIFYING UPPER MIDWEST TROUGH. A MORE PROMINENT
WAVE SHOULD WEAKEN SOME AS IT TRACKS FROM THE GREAT LAKES REGION
INTO SRN ONTARIO/ QUEBEC...BUT WILL LIKELY TAKE ON A NEUTRAL TO
SLIGHT NEGATIVE TILT.

AT THE SURFACE...A LOW ATTENDANT TO THE PROMINENT LEAD MIDLEVEL WAVE
SHOULD DEEPEN SOME ON SUNDAY AS IT SHIFTS ENEWD FROM WRN WI AND
THROUGH NRN LOWER MI SUNDAY AFTERNOON TO SWRN QUEBEC BY 12Z MONDAY.
A SECOND UPSTREAM SURFACE LOW ACCOMPANYING THE AMPLIFYING UPPER
MIDWEST SYSTEM SHOULD MOVE SEWD REACHING THE UPPER GREAT LAKES BY
THE END OF THE PERIOD. A COLD FRONT TRAILING THE LEAD SURFACE LOW
WILL SHIFT EWD THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES AND MIDWEST...WHILE THE WRN
EXTENT MOVES SWD INTO THE MID MS VALLEY AND SRN PLAINS.
MEANWHILE...A WARM FRONT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE NEWD FROM THE UPPER OH
VALLEY/CENTRAL APPALACHIANS THROUGH THE NERN STATES DURING THE
FORECAST PERIOD.

...GREAT LAKES REGION/OH VALLEY TO NORTHEAST STATES...
ALTHOUGH STRONGEST LOW LEVEL MASS FLUX SHOULD SHIFT EWD FROM THE
UPPER GREAT LAKES/NRN LOWER MI INTO SRN ONTARIO/SWRN QUEBEC BY
SUNDAY AFTERNOON...INCREASING SWLY LOW LEVEL WINDS ACROSS THE OH
VALLEY ALONG SRN EXTENT OF THE LLJ WILL ADVECT MOISTURE NEWD. HIGH
THETAE AIR MASS...PW VALUES /1.5-2 INCHES/...SPREADING NEWD
SPREADING NEWD ACROSS THE WARM SECTOR COMBINED WITH SURFACE HEATING
WILL RESULT IN MODERATE INSTABILITY THROUGHOUT THE SLIGHT RISK AREA.

TSTMS...POTENTIALLY IN THE FORM OF AN MCS...SHOULD BE ONGOING AT 12Z
SUNDAY ACROSS THE WRN GREAT LAKES INTO PARTS OF THE MIDWEST. NEW
TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BY SUNDAY AFTERNOON ALONG A
PRE-FRONTAL BOUNDARY/CONVERGENCE ZONE FROM THE MID MS/LOWER OH
VALLEYS INTO LOWER MI AND POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR THE MORNING MCS
TO RE-INTENSITY AS IT MOVES EWD INTO A DESTABILIZING AIR MASS. DEEP
LAYER SHEAR SHOULD BE STRONGEST OVER THE GREAT LAKES WHERE
SUPERCELLS WILL BE POSSIBLE...WITH MULTICELLULAR CLUSTERS/LINE
SEGMENTS MORE LIKELY INTO THE OH VALLEY GIVEN WEAKER SHEAR VALUES
WITH SWD EXTENT. ADDITIONAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED IN THE
VICINITY OF THE RETREATING WARM FRONT SUNDAY AFTERNOON WITH MODERATE
INSTABILITY AND EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR SUFFICIENT FOR ORGANIZED
STORMS...INCLUDING A FEW SUPERCELLS.

AMPLE LARGE SCALE ASCENT AND A STRENGTHENING WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY LOW
LEVEL JET...AHEAD OF THE UPSTREAM AMPLIFYING SHORTWAVE TROUGH...
SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE ORGANIZATION/SUSTENANCE OF MULTIPLE
EASTWARD MOVING LINEAR CLUSTERS/POTENTIAL MCS DURING THE EVENING
HOURS...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES VICINITY. THIS
ACTIVITY MAY ULTIMATELY OUTRUN THE GREATER RESERVOIR OF INSTABILITY
ACROSS THE MIDWEST SUNDAY NIGHT...BUT AT LEAST SPORADIC WIND DAMAGE
MAY BE POSSIBLE LATE SUNDAY NIGHT/EARLY MONDAY AS FAR EAST AS
UPSTATE NY AND WESTERN NEW ENGLAND.

...MID MS VALLEY TO SRN/CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...
AIR MASS IS EXPECTED TO BECOME MODERATELY TO STRONGLY UNSTABLE ALONG
THE SWD MOVING COLD FRONT WITH GREATEST VALUES EXTENDING FROM MO
THROUGH SRN KS AND OK. LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE WILL HELP TO PROMOTE
TSTM DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE FRONT. STRONGER SHEAR IS PROGGED TO LAG
THIS BOUNDARY RESULTING IN A LIMITED POTENTIAL FOR ORGANIZED STORMS.
HOWEVER...GIVEN STRONG INSTABILITY...ISOLATED WIND GUSTS AND HAIL
WILL BE POSSIBLE.

ADDITIONAL STORMS WILL BE LIKELY INTO THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND
ADJACENT HIGH PLAINS OF ERN CO/NM AS MOIST POST FRONTAL UPSLOPE FLOW
OCCURS ACROSS MUCH OF THESE AREAS...AND SELY UPSLOPE FLOW INTO SW TX
IN ADVANCE OF THE FRONT SUPPORT AFTERNOON CONVECTION. ALTHOUGH DEEP
LAYER SHEAR WILL BE STRONGER ACROSS THIS AREA... WEAKER INSTABILITY
WILL TEND TO LIMIT COVERAGE OF THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 261631
SWODY1
SPC AC 261630

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1130 AM CDT SAT JUN 26 2010

VALID 261630Z - 271200Z

...THERE IS A MDT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHEASTERN
SOUTH DAKOTA...NORTHEASTERN NEBRASKA...SOUTHWESTERN MINNESOTA AND
NORTHWESTERN IOWA...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS SURROUNDING THE SLIGHT FROM THE
NORTH/CENTRAL PLAINS EWD INTO THE UPPER MS VALLEY...

...CENTRAL/NRN PLAINS...
WV IMAGERY AND MORNING ANALYSIS SHOW BROAD UPPER TROUGH SHIFTING EWD
FROM CENTRAL MT SWD INTO NRN UT...WHICH WAS ALSO AIDING IN THE
EJECTION OF ANOTHER IMPULSE NEWD THROUGH NERN CO. THESE TWO SYSTEMS
SHOULD BE PRIMARY CONTRIBUTORS FOR SEVERE THREAT THIS PERIOD. AT THE
SURFACE...A BROAD AREA OF SURFACE LOW PRESSURE WAS SITUATED OVER WRN
NEB/SD WITH A SURFACE TROUGH/FRONT EXTENDING SWD INTO WRN KS. AS
UPPER TROUGH APPROACHES FROM THE WEST... SURFACE LOW SHOULD
CONSOLIDATE AND DEEPEN SLIGHTLY AS IT SHIFTS EWD INTO SRN MN THIS
EVE AND WI OVERNIGHT. SUBTLE WARM FRONT/OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES...WITH
ONE EXTENDING FROM CENTRAL SD SEWD ALONG THE IA/NEB AND ANOTHER IN
FAR SRN MN...ARE EXPECTED TO CONSOLIDATE AND SHARPEN BY LATE
AFTERNOON IN SERN SD/SRN MN AS THE LOW MOVES EWD.

AT MID MORNING...MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES AND A FEW CLUSTERS OF ELEVATED
STORMS WERE LOCATED ACROSS THE DAKOTAS...WITHIN WEAK WARM ADVECTION
REGIME. ALTHOUGH MUCAPES AROUND 1500 J/KG AND CLOUD BEARING VERTICAL
SHEAR MAY SUPPORT ISOLATED SEVERE HAIL INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON
HOURS...THE GREATER SEVERE THREAT LIKELY WILL WAIT UNTIL LATER TODAY
AS STRONGER FORCING SPREADS IN FROM THE W AND SW AND GREATER
BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZATION OCCURS.

THE MOST LIKELY AREA FOR INTENSE STORMS TO DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON
WILL BE SERN SD/NERN NEB/SWRN MN AND NWRN IA...AS UPPER WAVE
APPROACHES FROM THE SW AND SURFACE BOUNDARY PROVIDES FOCUS FOR
CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT. ALSO...THIS IS AN AREA WHERE SKIES HAVE BEEN
SUNNY THROUGH THE MORNING AND MORE WARMING SHOULD RESULT IN EXTREME
INSTABILITY BY MID AFTERNOON...WITH MLCAPES APPROACHING 4000 J/KG.
ONCE SURFACE BASED STORMS DEVELOP...THE EXTREME INSTABILITY COMBINED
WITH EFFECTIVE SHEAR NEAR 50 KT WILL BE VERY FAVORABLE FOR INTENSE
SUPERCELLS. THOUGH THE GREATEST THREAT WILL BE VERY HAIL...BASEBALL
SIZED AND BIGGER...STRONGLY CURVED HODOGRAPHS IN THE LOWER 1-2 KM
INDICATES TORNADOES ARE ALSO LIKELY WITH DISCRETE
SUPERCELLS...ESPECIALLY WITHIN MODERATE RISK AREA. OVERNIGHT...AS
LOW LEVEL JET STRENGTHENS...CONVECTION MAY CONSOLIDATE INTO A
LINEAR MCS. LARGE HAIL AND WIND DAMAGE...AS WELL AS A TORNADO OR
TWO...SHOULD PERSIST AS ACTIVITY SPREADS EWD ACROSS PORTIONS OF
MN/WI/IA INTO EARLY SUNDAY.

OTHER STORMS ARE ALSO LIKELY TO DEVELOP/SPREAD EWD ACROSS THE
DAKOTAS SWD INTO NEB LATE TODAY AND TONIGHT...AND POSSIBLY NRN KS AS
UPPER TROUGH APPROACHES FROM THE WEST. THOUGH THE COMBINATION OF
CONVERGENCE/SHEAR AND INSTABILITY WILL NOT BE AS GREAT AS IN THE
MODERATE RISK AREA...MODERATE TO STRONG INSTABILITY AND BAND OF
40-50 KT MID LEVEL FLOW...WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR SUPERCELLS WITH
SEVERE HAIL AND WIND DAMAGE. GIVEN THE MORNING CLOUDS ACROSS NERN
CO/WRN NEB AND EXPECTED SUBSIDENCE BEHIND DEPARTING UPPER
IMPULSE...ONLY VERY ISOLATED HIGH BASED STORMS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS
NERN CO...WRN KS AND FAR SERN WY LATE THIS AFTERNOON.

...IL/IN/OH...
OUTFLOW FROM OVERNIGHT MCS COULD PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR STORM
DEVELOPMENT LATER TODAY AS AIR MASS UNDERGOES DIURNAL
DESTABILIZATION. THE MID LEVEL FLOW WILL NOT BE PARTICULARLY STRONG
AND UPPER WAVE CURRENTLY MOVING THROUGH THE AREA MAY RESULT IN WEAK
SUBSIDENCE FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS. HOWEVER... CONVERGENCE MAY
INCREASE BY EVENING AS LOW LEVEL JET SLOWLY STRENGTHENS TO 20 KT. IF
STORMS DEVELOP...INSTABILITY WOULD BE FAVORABLE FOR ISOLATED WIND
DAMAGE.

...SRN ATLANTIC COASTAL STATES WWD INTO OK...
VERY MOIST...WARM AND HUMID AIR MASS SHOULD RESULT IN SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS INTO THE EVENING HOURS. WHILE A FEW WET...SHORT LIVED
MICROBURSTS APPEAR LIKELY...WEAK MID LEVEL FLOW/SHEAR AND POORLY
DEFINED FOCUSING MECHANISMS MEANS THESE FEW EVENTS WOULD OCCUR
WITHIN A LARGE AREA...SO ONLY LOW WIND PROBABILITIES ARE FORECAST.
