DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 300043
SWODY1
SPC AC 300042

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0742 PM CDT FRI OCT 29 2010

VALID 300100Z - 301200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SRN FLORIDA PENINSULA...
AS A BAND OF SUPPORTING MID-LEVEL ASCENT CONTINUES TO SHIFT
SOUTHWARD THIS EVENING...ONGOING THUNDERSTORMS APPEAR LIKELY TO
DIMINISH ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PENINSULA AND UPPER KEYS DURING THE
01-03Z TIME FRAME. ACTIVITY COULD DEVELOP SOUTHWESTWARD INTO THE
LOWER KEYS...BUT THIS THREAT IS EXPECTED TO END BY AROUND 06Z.

...CENTRAL/SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA...
AS A MID-LEVEL CLOSED LOW AND ASSOCIATED TROUGH MIGRATE INLAND... IT
STILL APPEARS THAT DESTABILIZATION WILL BE INSUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT
MUCH IN THE WAY OF THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. HOWEVER...A SHORT-LIVED
THUNDERSTORM OR TWO DOES NOT APPEAR OUT OF THE QUESTION NEAR THE
COAST AND COASTAL RANGES NORTH OF THE LOS ANGELES BASIN INTO AREAS
SOUTH OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY...AFTER AROUND 09Z.

..KERR.. 10/30/2010

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
A MIDLEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE OFF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST
EARLY IN THE DAY AS AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE COLD FRONT CONTINUES SWD
ACROSS FL IN ITS WAKE. A MOIST TROPICAL AIR MASS REMAINS OVER S FL
IN ADVANCE OF THE FRONT...AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE
THIS AFTERNOON INVOF THE FRONT AS CONVECTIVE INHIBITION WEAKENS WITH
DAYTIME HEATING. OTHERWISE...A RIDGE ALOFT WILL BE MAINTAINED OVER
THE ROCKIES AND PLAINS...DOWNSTREAM FROM ANOTHER TROUGH JUST OFF THE
PACIFIC COAST. AN EMBEDDED SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL ROTATE AROUND THE
SRN PERIPHERY OF A CLOSED LOW NOW NEAR 38 N AND 131 W...AND THIS
WAVE WILL APPROACH THE CENTRAL/SRN CA COAST OVERNIGHT. LOW-MIDLEVEL
LAPSE RATES AND BUOYANCY WILL REMAIN MARGINAL INLAND...BUT ISOLATED
LIGHTNING STRIKES CANNOT BE RULED OUT ALONG THE CENTRAL CA COAST
LATE TONIGHT.

...DISCUSSION...

BOTH THE GFS AND ECMWF ARE IN REASONABLE AGREEMENT REGARDING THE
EVOLUTION OF A SWD-MOVING UPPER LOW INTO TX EARLY NEXT WEEK. WHILE
THIS FEATURE IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE SHEAR ACROSS THE COASTAL PLAINS
OF TX/LA...WEAK LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE ALONG A SAGGING FRONTAL ZONE
AND WEAK-MODEST INSTABILITY DO NOT PARTICULARLY FAVOR ORGANIZED
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.

...GREAT BASIN/CNTRL ROCKIES...

LATEST 00Z MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGEST ERN PACIFIC UPPER TROUGH WILL DIG
SEWD INTO CA BEFORE EJECTING ENEWD ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN INTO THE
CNTRL ROCKIES LATE IN THE DAY2 PERIOD. THIS FEATURE WILL
UNDOUBTEDLY ENHANCE VERTICAL ASCENT WITHIN LEFT EXIT REGION OF A
FAIRLY WELL DEFINED MID LEVEL SPEED MAX THAT WILL TRANSLATE INTO
SWRN CO AT 31/00Z. ALTHOUGH MOISTURE/INSTABILITY WILL BE LIMITED
ACROSS NV/UT/CO...PWAT VALUES NEAR ONE-HALF INCH...IT APPEARS STRONG
FORCING ALONG A WELL DEFINED BAROCLINIC ZONE SHOULD PROVE SUFFICIENT
IN GENERATING CONVECTION DEEP ENOUGH FOR LIGHTNING DISCHARGE AS
100-200 J/KG MUCAPE WILL RESULT IN CLOUD HEIGHTS IN EXCESS OF 400 MB
- TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW MINUS 20C. FOR THIS REASON IT APPEARS
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD BE NOTED...PRIMARILY DURING THE
DAYTIME/EARLY EVENING HOURS.

ACUS01 KWNS 290517
SWODY1
SPC AC 290516

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1216 AM CDT FRI OCT 29 2010

VALID 291200Z - 301200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...
MODELS INDICATE THAT A SPLIT FLOW WILL PERSIST ACROSS THE EASTERN
PACIFIC AND WESTERN NORTH AMERICA...DOWNSTREAM OF ANOTHER STRONG
ZONAL UPPER JET NOSING ACROSS THE MID LATITUDE PACIFIC. WHILE A
MID/UPPER RIDGE BUILDS WITHIN THE NORTHERN BRANCH EAST OF THE
CANADIAN ROCKIES...A CLOSED LOW WITHIN THE SOUTHERN BRANCH IS
PROGGED TO MIGRATE INLAND ACROSS THE CALIFORNIA COAST BY THE END OF
THE FORECAST PERIOD. FARTHER DOWNSTREAM...BROAD SOUTHERN STREAM
RIDGING APPEARS LIKELY TO PERSIST ACROSS MUCH OF THE PLAINS AND
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...BUT A SIGNIFICANT SHORT WAVE IMPULSE IS PROGGED
TO ACCELERATE EAST NORTHEAST OF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST... AS AN
ELONGATING CIRCULATION WITHIN THE NORTHERN BRANCH MIGRATES EAST
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS ONTARIO/QUEBEC AND PARTS OF NEW ENGLAND.

IN RESPONSE TO THE LEAD IMPULSE...A COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE TO PROGRESS AWAY FROM ATLANTIC COASTAL AREAS...AND
SOUTHWARD THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA...WITH A
LARGE SURFACE RIDGE BECOMING CENTERED OVER MUCH OF THE GULF COAST
AND SOUTHEASTERN STATES. DRY...STABLE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE
MAINTAINED OVER MUCH OF THE NATION...WITH LOW TO NEGLIGIBLE
POTENTIAL FOR THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY.

...FLORIDA...
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY MAY PERSIST IN OR NEAR EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA
COAST ATLANTIC COASTAL WATERS...BEFORE THE SURFACE FRONTAL PASSAGE
STABILIZES THE ENVIRONMENT BY THE MID MORNING HOURS.
THEREAFTER...AS THE FRONT ADVANCES SOUTHWARD...MODELS SUGGEST
LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE WILL BECOME FOCUSED ACROSS THE INTERIOR
SOUTHERN PENINSULA BY 18-21Z...WHEN HEATING OF A MOIST BOUNDARY
LAYER MAY YIELD MODERATELY LARGE CAPE...AND CONTRIBUTE TO WEAKENING
INHIBITION. A FEW THUNDERSTORMS APPEAR POSSIBLE...WITH DIFLUENT
UPPER FLOW PERHAPS SUPPORTING THE EVOLUTION OF A SMALL STORM
CLUSTER. IF THIS OCCURS...LIGHT NORTHERLY FLOW MAY AID SOUTHWARD
PROPAGATION ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE KEYS BY EARLY EVENING.

...CALIFORNIA...
CONSIDERABLE VARIABILITY EXISTS AMONG THE MODELS CONCERNING THE
TIMING OF THE INLAND PROGRESSION OF THE CLOSED LOW. HOWEVER... THE
MID-LEVEL COLD CORE DOES NOT APPEAR LIKELY TO PROGRESS ONSHORE UNTIL
THE EVENING HOURS AT THE EARLIEST. STILL...IT DOES NOT SEEM OUT OF
THE QUESTION THAT SUFFICIENT DESTABILIZATION COULD OCCUR TO SUPPORT
AT LEAST 10 PERCENT THUNDERSTORM PROBABILITIES...PARTICULARLY ACROSS
THE COASTAL RANGES BETWEEN SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND THE LOS ANGELES
BASIN.
