DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1030 AM CST SAT FEB 18 2012

VALID 181630Z - 191200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE GULF COAST STATES...

...GULF COAST STATES...
A SOUTHERN STREAM UPPER TROUGH /WITH ASSOCIATED STRONG UPPER JET/
OVER SOUTHWEST TX WILL PROGRESS EAST-NORTHEASTWARD AND INCREASINGLY
TAKE ON A NEUTRAL/SLIGHT NEGATIVE TILT THROUGH TONIGHT AS IT REACHES
THE LOWER MS VALLEY/CENTRAL GULF COAST STATES...WHILE ALSO PHASING
WITH AN ADDITIONAL IMPULSE OVER THE LOWER/MIDDLE MO VALLEY.
NEAR/AHEAD OF AN ONGOING SQUALL LINE ACROSS SOUTHERN LA...A WARM
FRONT AND AN ASSOCIATED MORE MOISTURE-RICH AIRMASS WILL SLOWLY MOVE
INLAND THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING ACROSS THE IMMEDIATE COASTAL AREAS OF
LA/SOUTHWEST AL...AS WELL AS THE FL PANHANDLE/SOUTHEAST AL/SOUTHWEST
GA LATER TONIGHT. ACCORDINGLY...SURFACE DEWPOINTS ON THE ORDER OF
64-66 F /OR LOCALLY HIGHER NEAR THE COAST/ WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY
FAVORABLE FOR SURFACE BASED STORMS...INCLUDING DAMAGING WINDS AND A
TORNADO THREAT...WITH SHEAR/LOW-LEVEL SRH MORE THAN ADEQUATE FOR
EMBEDDED BOWS/POSSIBLE MESO-VORTICES AND PERHAPS A FEW SEMI-DISCRETE
SUPERCELLS IMMEDIATELY AHEAD OF THE CONVECTIVE LINE.

AS THE PARENT CYCLONE SPREADS EAST-NORTHEASTWARD/DEEP LAYER WIND
FIELD STRENGTHENS INTO TONIGHT...SURFACE CYCLOGENESIS WILL OCCUR
ACROSS INLAND PORTIONS OF MS/AL THROUGH LATE TONIGHT/EARLY SUNDAY.
WHILE A MORE MARGINALLY MOIST AIRMASS WILL EXIST WITH NORTHWARD
EXTENT INLAND ACROSS THE REGION...AT LEAST AN ISOLATED SEVERE THREAT
IN THE FROM OF DAMAGING WINDS/ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL LIKELY EXIST
TONIGHT IN AREAS AS FAR E/NE AS FL PANHANDLE/SOUTHERN AL INTO SOUTH
GA.

VALID 181531Z - 181630Z

ELEVATED TSTMS SHOULD TRANSITION TO BECOMING SURFACE-BASED THROUGH
THE DAY...WITH A CORRESPONDING INCREASE IN DAMAGING WIND AND
EVENTUALLY TORNADO POTENTIAL...ESPECIALLY ACROSS SERN LA THIS
AFTERNOON. A TORNADO WATCH WILL LIKELY BE ISSUED BY 1630Z.

BOWING STRUCTURE HAS BECOME MORE PROMINENT WITH LEAD SQUALL LINE
ACROSS ST LANDRY TO CAMERON PARISHES AS OF 1525Z. ALTHOUGH MODIFIED
12Z LCH RAOB SUGGESTS THIS BOW IS ELEVATED WITH MINIMAL
SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY...DOWNSTREAM AIR MASS CONTINUES TO
WARM/MOISTEN ACROSS SERN LA. 15Z SURFACE ANALYSIS INDICATES WARM

TOWARDS LK PONTCHARTRAIN. ALTHOUGH THE RICHER MARITIME AIR MASS
REMAINS ALONG/JUST OFF THE SRN LA COAST...MODIFIED RUC/NAM SOUNDINGS

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0124

AREAS AFFECTED...SRN LA...SERN TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 27...

VALID 181429Z - 181500Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 27
CONTINUES.

SQUALL LINE ALONG PRIMARILY COASTAL SECTIONS OF SWRN LA TO SERN TX
SHOULD POSE A THREAT FOR ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS ALONG THE SRN LA
COAST THIS MORNING. WW 27 MAY BE SPATIOTEMPORALLY EXTENDED ACROSS
PARTS OF SWRN LA. A DOWNSTREAM WW IS NOT ANTICIPATED WITHIN THE HOUR
FOR SERN LA...BUT WILL BE MONITORED FOR ONE LATER THIS MORNING.

14Z SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACED 1006 MB CYCLONE AROUND 30 S BPT...WITH
QUASI-STATIONARY WARM FRONT EXTENDING EWD ALONG THE SRN LA COAST.
MODIFIED 12Z LCH RAOB WOULD INFER THAT PORTION OF SQUALL LINE ACROSS
SWRN LA IS ELEVATED WITH MINIMAL SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY. GIVEN
ORIENTATION EVOLVING FROM A N-S TO MORE OF AN W-E STRUCTURE SUGGEST
DOWNSTREAM DAMAGING WIND THREAT SHOULD REMAIN MARGINAL IN THE
NEAR-TERM.../RECENT OBSERVED GUSTS OF 37 AND 40 KT MEASURED AT KCWF
AND KUXL/. STILL PRESENCE OF 50 KT EFFECTIVE SHEAR MAY POSE AN
ISOLATED RISK FOR DAMAGING WINDS...PRIMARILY ALONG COASTAL SWRN LA.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 181233
SWODY1
SPC AC 181231

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0631 AM CST SAT FEB 18 2012

VALID 181300Z - 191200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM SOUTHEAST TX INTO THE
CENTRAL GULF COAST STATES...

SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW A STRONG UPPER TROUGH MOVING ACROSS WEST TX AND
NORTHERN MEXICO. THIS SYSTEM WILL PROGRESS EASTWARD TODAY AND
AFFECT MUCH OF THE WESTERN/CENTRAL GULF COAST REGION. AT THE
SURFACE...A COLD FRONT IS MOVING ACROSS SOUTHEAST TX WHILE A WARM
FRONT LIES JUST OFF THE TX/LA COAST. THE WARM FRONT IS LIKELY TO
DRIFT NORTHWARD TODAY AND BECOME POSITIONED JUST ONSHORE. THIS WILL
LEAVE PARTS OF SOUTHERN LA/MS IN THE WARM SECTOR AND WILL POSE A
THREAT OF A FEW SEVERE STORMS.

A LINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS IS ONGOING THIS MORNING ALONG THE
COLD FRONT OVER SOUTHEAST TX. THESE STORMS HAVE REMAINED SLIGHTLY
ELEVATED WITH ONLY OCCASIONAL STRONG/SEVERE WIND GUSTS BEING
REPORTED. AS THE WARM FRONT MOVES ASHORE LATER TODAY...THE
POTENTIAL FOR SURFACE BASED STORMS WILL INCREASE ACROSS SOUTHERN
LA/MS. MODEL SOLUTIONS SUGGEST LOW LEVEL CYCLOGENESIS WILL OCCUR ON
THE WARM FRONT BY MIDDAY...FURTHER STRENGTHENING LOW LEVEL WINDS AND
AIDING THE RISK OF ORGANIZED/SEVERE STORMS. BOW/LEWP STRUCTURES AND
AN ATTENDANT THREAT OF LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS APPEAR TO BE THE MAIN
THREAT. HOWEVER...LOW LEVEL VERTICAL SHEAR WILL BECOME SUFFICIENT
FOR A RISK OF A FEW TORNADOES IF A MORE CELLULAR STORM MODE CAN BE
ATTAINED OVER THE WARM SECTOR. STORMS ARE LIKELY TO SPREAD EASTWARD
AND AFFECT PARTS OF AL/SOUTHWEST GA AND THE FL PANHANDLE BY LATE
TONIGHT WITH A CONTINUED RISK OF LOCALLY SEVERE STORMS.

SOUTHEAST TEXAS
COASTAL WATERS

EFFECTIVE THIS SATURDAY MORNING FROM 450 AM UNTIL 900 AM CST.

HAIL TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 60
STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 35 MILES NORTH OF PORT
ARTHUR TEXAS TO 25 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF PALACIOS TEXAS. FOR A
COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE
UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU7).

REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

DISCUSSION...A LINE OF INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS HAS DEVELOPED
ALONG/AHEAD OF SURFACE COLD FRONT SURGING EASTWARD ACROSS SOUTHEAST
TX. THE SURFACE AIR MASS AHEAD OF THE STORMS IS ONLY MARGINALLY
UNSTABLE AT BEST. HOWEVER...INCREASING MESOSCALE ORGANIZATION OF
THE LINE SUGGESTS SOME POTENTIAL OF DAMAGING WIND GUSTS REACHING THE
SURFACE. OTHERWISE...HAIL WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE IN THE STRONGER
CELLS.

AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
TO 1.5 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 450. MEAN STORM
MOTION VECTOR 25040.

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 181035Z - 181130Z

STORMS WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT SERN TX AND EVENTUALLY SWRN LA LATER
THIS MORNING. A FEW STRONG TO SEVERE WIND GUSTS MAY OCCUR.

STORMS HAVE CONSOLIDATED ACROSS SERN TX ON SURGING OUTFLOW/COLD
FRONT COMPOSITE BOUNDARY. AHEAD OF THIS LINE...WARM ADVECTION
CONVECTION WAS SHIFTING NWD OVER SERN TX INTO WRN LA. THIS
CONVECTION IS A GOOD PROXY FOR THE WARM FRONT...WHICH MAY BE
SLIGHTLY ELEVATED. SURFACE OBSERVATIONS SHOW TEMPERATURES IN THE 60S
S OF THIS BOUNDARY...WITH SIMILAR DEWPOINTS. FORECAST SOUNDINGS
INDICATE THAT DESPITE COOL TEMPERATURES...LITTLE CAPPING
EXISTS...ESPECIALLY IN VICINITY OF THE FORCED LINE OF STORMS.
FURTHER...THERE MAY BE POTENTIAL FOR DOWNWARD MOMENTUM TRANSFER AND
WITH LONG HODOGRAPHS IN PLACE...THIS ACTIVITY MAY PERSIST FOR
SEVERAL HOURS. GIVEN THE MARGINAL BOUNDARY LAYER THOUGH...SEVERE
THREAT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE WIDESPREAD.

OTHER CELLS WERE DEVELOPING FARTHER S AS WELL ALONG THE COLD FRONT.
CAPPING IS A PROBLEM FROM CRP TO BRO...BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT DEEP
FORCING ALONG THE FRONT COULD EVENTUALLY OVERCOME THE
INVERSION...WITH A FEW STORMS DEVELOPING NEAR THE COAST BEFORE
QUICKLY MOVING OFFSHORE. THESE STORMS MAY PRODUCE HAIL IF THEY
REMAIN CELLULAR.

ECMWF...GFS AND ECMWF ENSEMBLE MEMBERS INDICATE SIMILAR SOLUTIONS
AND EVOLVE A BROAD TROUGH OVER THE ERN U.S. THAT PERSISTS THROUGH AT
LEAST DAY 6. THIS PATTERN WILL GENERALLY BE UNFAVORABLE FOR A
SIGNIFICANT RETURN OF LOW LEVEL MOISTURE EXCEPT POSSIBLY ALONG THE
GULF COASTAL AREA AND FL. AT LEAST A MODEST SEVERE THREAT CANNOT BE
RULED OUT ALONG THE CNTRL/ERN GULF COASTS AND NRN FL LATE DAY 5 AND
AGAIN DAY 7 AS WSWLY LLJ STRENGTHENS IN RESPONSE TO PERTURBATIONS
WITHIN BASE OF BROADER TROUGH. HOWEVER...INSTABILITY ONSHORE WILL
LIKELY REMAIN LIMITED WHICH LOWERS OVERALL CONFIDENCE IN A GREATER
COVERAGE SEVERE EVENT AT THIS TIME.

...SYNOPSIS...

PROGRESSIVE AND MODERATELY AMPLIFIED SYNOPTIC PATTERN WILL PREVAIL
MONDAY WITH LOOSE PHASING BETWEEN SRN AND NRN STREAMS. CONSENSUS
AMONG GFS AND ECMWF IS THAT ANOTHER IN SERIES OF SHORTWAVE TROUGHS
WILL FOLLOW CLOSELY ON THE HEELS OF IMPULSE NOW OVER NRN MEXICO AS
IT EXITS THE ERN SEABOARD BY EARLY MONDAY. THE UPSTREAM TROUGH WILL
LIKELY MOVE THROUGH THE CNTRL/SRN PLAINS MONDAY BEFORE EJECTING INTO
THE MID MS AND OH VALLEYS OVERNIGHT. PREFER SPECTRAL MODELS OVER THE
MUCH SLOWER NAM SOLUTIONS.

...ERN OK AND ERN KS THROUGH THE LOWER-MID MS VALLEY...

GIVEN LIKELY INTRUSION OF CP AIR INTO THE GULF SUNDAY AND THE SHORT
WAVELENGTH BETWEEN THE TROUGH EXITING THE ERN SEABOARD AND UPSTREAM
WAVE THAT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE PLAINS ON MONDAY...INSUFFICIENT TIME
WILL EXIST FOR SIGNIFICANT RETURN OF LOW LEVEL MOISTURE.
STRENGTHENING LLJ ASSOCIATED WITH DEVELOPING LEE LOW WILL RESULT IN
40S DEWPOINTS ADVECTING NWD THROUGH PRE-FRONTAL WARM SECTOR BENEATH
STEEPER MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES ACCOMPANYING THE UPPER TROUGH. GIVEN
THE MEAGER LOW LEVEL MOISTURE...MUCAPE WILL REMAIN AOB 300 J/KG.
SHALLOW CONVECTION MAY DEVELOP WITHIN ZONE OF FRONTAL CONVERGENCE
AND UPPER DIVERGENCE WITHIN PROGRESSIVE UPPER JET EXIT REGION FROM
ERN OK AND KS INTO THE MID MS VALLEY MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
DESPITE A FAVORABLE KINEMATIC ENVIRONMENT...SEVERE POTENTIAL WILL
REMAIN LOW DUE TO SCANT INSTABILITY.

VALID 191200Z - 201200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM PORTIONS OF ERN SC...SRN
GA THROUGH NRN AND CNTRL FL...

...SYNOPSIS...

SRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH EXTENDING FROM WRN TX THROUGH NWRN
MEXICO AS OF LATE FRIDAY EVENING WILL ADVANCE TO THE CNTRL GULF
COAST STATES EARLY SUNDAY BEFORE MOVING OFF THE SERN ATLANTIC
SEABOARD BY EVENING. SURFACE LOW INITIALLY OVER CNTRL AL SUNDAY
MORNING WILL LIKELY WEAKEN AS IT DEVELOPS TOWARD THE MORE STABLE
REGIME ACROSS THE SRN APPALACHIANS...WHILE SECONDARY CYCLOGENESIS
COMMENCES NEAR THE SC/NC COAST AS UPPER DIVERGENCE ACCOMPANYING THE
TROUGH BEGINS TO OVERTAKE THE BAROCLINIC ZONE LOCATED OVER THE GULF
STREAM. COLD FRONT EXTENDING SWD FROM THE INITIAL LOW WILL ADVANCE
THROUGH REMAINDER OF GA...SRN SC AND FL WHILE A WARM FRONT LIFTS NWD
INTO THE NRN GULF STREAM AS THE CYCLONE DEEPENS OFF THE NC COAST.

...NRN FL THROUGH COASTAL GA AND SC...

STORMS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH PRE-FRONTAL WARM SECTOR ALONG WARM
CONVEYOR BELT FROM PORTIONS OF SRN GA...SC AND NRN FL SUNDAY WHERE A
STRONG LLJ WILL HAVE ADVECTED MID 60S DEWPOINTS INLAND. THIS
ENVIRONMENT WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY LARGE 0-1 KM HODOGRAPHS AND
STRONG CLOUD LAYER SHEAR BUT WITH GENERALLY WEAK INSTABILITY WHICH
MAY SERVE AS A LIMITING FACTOR FOR A MORE ROBUST SEVERE EVENT.
NEVERTHELESS...GIVEN THE FAVORABLE KINEMATIC ENVIRONMENT AND 50-60
KT FLOW WITHIN 1 KM OF THE SURFACE...POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR A FEW
STORMS TO PRODUCE ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND PERHAPS A TORNADO
OR TWO AS THEY DEVELOP EWD. A MODEST THREAT WILL ALSO EXIST FOR
STRONG CONVECTION IN WAKE OF INITIAL ACTIVITY WITHIN DRY SLOT REGION
ALONG AND JUST AHEAD OF COLD FRONT WHERE AT LEAST MODEST DIABATIC
HEATING AND SOMEWHAT GREATER LAPSE RATES MAY RESULT IN A SLIGHTLY
MORE FAVORABLE THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT.

HIGHER BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS AND GREATER LIKELIHOOD OF DIABATIC
WARMING SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO GREATER INSTABILITY TOWARD CNTRL FL
WHERE MLCAPE COULD APPROACH 1000 J/KG. CYCLOGENESIS OFF NC COAST
WILL RESULT IN VEERING PRE-FRONTAL WINDS WHICH ALONG WITH LIMITED
DEEP FORCING FOR ASCENT MAY RESULT TO A LESS FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT
FOR THUNDERSTORMS WITH SWD EXTENT INTO FL AS MID LEVEL DRY SLOT
ADVECTS EWD. HOWEVER...ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP WILL POSE A SEVERE
RISK GIVEN STRENGTH OF DEEP LAYER FLOW/SHEAR. SEVERE THREAT SHOULD
DIMINISH BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON.

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS PORTIONS SE TX TO SWRN GA....

...SYNOPSIS...
HEIGHTS ALOFT ARE FCST TO FALL OVER MOST OF WRN CONUS AS
SYNOPTIC-SCALE TROUGHING DEVELOPS THERE. STG MID-UPPER LEVEL
SHORTWAVE TROUGH -- NOW EVIDENT IN MOISTURE CHANNEL IMAGERY FROM
S-CENTRAL NM AND FAR W TX SWD ACROSS NWRN MEX -- IS EXPECTED TO
ACCELERATE ENEWD THIS PERIOD. BY 19/00Z...TROUGH SHOULD BE LOCATED
CLOSE TO I-35 IN TX...WITH SECONDARY/NRN STREAM PERTURBATION FARTHER
N OVER CENTRAL/ERN NEB AND NRN KS. DURING LATTER HALF OF
PERIOD...CENTRAL PLAINS PERTURBATION SHOULD MOVE SEWD OVER LOWER MO
VALLEY...WHILE SRN-STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH ACCELERATES AND
DEAMPLIFIES...REACHING PORTIONS MS/AL.

AT SFC...LEE-SIDE CYCLONE IS DEVELOPING OVER DEEP S TX/LOWER RIO
GRANDE VALLEY REGION ATTM...WITH APCH OF MID-UPPER WAVE. THIS
CYCLONE IS FCST TO DEEPEN THROUGH MOST OF PERIOD. LOW SHOULD CROSS
EXTREME SE TX/SWRN LA COASTAL AREAS AROUND 19/00Z...AT WHICH TIME
COLD FRONT SHOULD ARC SEWD OFFSHORE LA COAST...WITH WARM FRONT EWD
CLOSE TO MS/AL COAST. WARM FRONT SHOULD MOVE INLAND
OVERNIGHT...OVER PORTIONS SRN AL AND SRN GA. NOCTURNAL AIR MASS S
OF WARM FRONT OVER S-CENTRAL/SERN GA WILL BE RELATIVELY DEPRIVED OF
HIGHER THETAE FOUND FARTHER W...BECAUSE OF OVERLAND TRAJECTORIES
FROM FL. MEANWHILE SFC CYCLONE SHOULD MOVE TO CENTRAL AL BY END OF
PERIOD...ITS INLAND COMPONENT OF MOTION LIKELY OUTPACING THAT OF
FAVORABLE GULF AIR MASS FARTHER SE ACROSS SERN AL...FL PANHANDLE AND
SWRN GA.

...PORTIONS GULF-COAST STATES AND SWRN GA...
AS SO OFTEN HAPPENS FOR COOL-SEASON/GULF-COAST
SCENARIOS...LOW-CAPE/STRONG-SHEAR SVR EVENT IS FCST. PREDOMINANT
MODE SHOULD BE QUASI-LINEAR ALONG/AHEAD OF SFC COLD FRONT...ALTHOUGH
DISCRETE OR CLUSTERED SUPERCELLS MAY FORM AHEAD OF PRIMARY
CONVECTIVE BAND. DAMAGING GUSTS SHOULD BE MOST COMMON SVR
EVENT...WITH ISOLATED INSTANCES OF SVR HAIL AND A FEW TORNADOES
POSSIBLE.

INLAND PENETRATION OF WARM FRONT WILL BE MITIGATED BY PRESENCE OF
ABUNDANT CLOUDS/PRECIP TO ITS N...THEREFORE...THERE STILL IS
CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY HOW FAR INLAND TO PROG FAVORABLE THETAE FOR
SFC-BASED EFFECTIVE PARCELS. AS SUCH...UNCONDITIONAL SVR
PROBABILITIES DIMINISH WITH NWD/NEWD EXTENT...AND ARE SHUNTED
SWD/SWWD COMPARED TO PREVIOUS OUTLOOKS VALID THIS PERIOD. STG-SVR
TSTMS MAY BE ONGOING ON EITHER SIDE OF WARM FRONT/SFC LOW EARLY IN
PERIOD OVER SE TX...WITH MULTIPLE CONVECTIVE EPISODES POSSIBLE AS
REGIME SHIFTS EWD ACROSS GULF-COAST CORRIDOR.

EVENING/OVERNIGHT WARM SECTOR NEAR CENTRAL-ERN GULF COAST SHOULD BE
CHARACTERIZED BY DEW POINTS MID-UPPER 60S F...OFFSETTING WEAK LAPSE
RATES ALOFT TO YIELD 500-1000 J/KG MLCAPE NEAR COAST..WEAKENING
MARKEDLY INLAND. 45-55 KT EFFECTIVE SHEAR MAGNITUDES AND 300-500
J/KG EFFECTIVE SRH...ALONG AND S OF WARM FRONT...WILL SUPPORT
CONDITIONAL SUPERCELL POTENTIAL IN WARM SECTOR...COVERAGE BEING MAIN
QUESTION. BOWS AND PERHAPS EMBEDDED SUPERCELLS ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN
MAIN CONVECTIVE BAND...WHERE RELATIVELY VEERED FLOW WILL RENDER WIND
PROFILES MORE UNIDIRECTIONAL THAN FARTHER E.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 180515Z - 180645Z

TSTMS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE IN AREAL COVERAGE ACROSS MUCH OF
CENTRAL TX /INCLUDING THE HILL COUNTRY/ ENEWD INTO PARTS OF E TX
INTO THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD. ISOLATED SEVERE HAIL /AOA 1 INCH
DIAMETER/ WILL BE POSSIBLE IN THE STRONGER SUSTAINED UPDRAFTS DURING
THE NEXT FEW HOURS...BUT OVERALL THREAT COVERAGE IS EXPECTED TO
REMAIN TOO LOW WITH NWD EXTENT TO WARRANT THE ISSUANCE OF A WW AT
THIS TIME. HOWEVER...FARTHER S...A FURTHER INCREASE IN STORM
INTENSITIES/COVERAGE WITH ACTIVITY FROM MAVERICK-MEDINA COUNTIES MAY
PROMPT THE NEED FOR A WATCH ALONG AND JUST N OF THE 01Z SLIGHT RISK
AREA.

MID-LATE EVENING SURFACE ANALYSES SHOWED A WARM FRONT HAD MOVED NWD
A ROW OF COUNTIES IN DEEP S TX SINCE 00Z...WITH THE NEW POSITION
EXTENDING FROM ZAPATA TO KLEBERG COUNTIES...AND EWD INTO THE WRN
GULF OF MEXICO. WSR-88D VADS AND WIND PROFILER DATA INDICATED A
25-30 KT SLY LLJ EXTENDING FROM BRO TO SAT RESULTING IN WAA ATOP A
STABLE BOUNDARY LAYER. MEANWHILE...REGIONAL RADAR IMAGERY SHOWED
CLUSTERS OF TSTMS EXTENDING FROM LLANO COUNTY W/SWWD TO VAL VERDE
AND MAVERICK COUNTIES. THIS ACTIVITY LIKELY IS ATTENDANT TO
STRONGER LARGE SCALE ASCENT BEGINNING TO SPREAD ACROSS TX WITH THE
APPROACH OF NRN MEXICO SHORTWAVE TROUGH. ADDITIONAL EPISODIC
STRONGER STORMS WERE ALSO NOTED PRIMARILY WITHIN THE NERN EXTENT OF
THE WAA REGIME INVOF CLL.

CURRENT THINKING SUGGESTS ADDITIONAL SUSTAINED ELEVATED UPDRAFTS
/SIMILAR TO THE AFOREMENTIONED ACTIVITY OVER AND NE OF THE TX HILL
COUNTRY/ WILL DEVELOP INTO THE EARLY OVERNIGHT. EFFECTIVE BULK
SHEAR ALREADY RANGING FROM 40-65 KT AND MUCAPE 500-1500 J/KG SHOULD
SUPPORT AN ISOLATED HAIL THREAT. GREATER SEVERE WEATHER THREAT MAY
DEVELOP AFTER MIDNIGHT AS STRONGER HEIGHT FALLS SPREAD INTO
