ACUS11 KWNS 171236
SWOMCD
SPC MCD 171235
ILZ000-IAZ000-MOZ000-171700-

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0024
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0635 AM CST MON JAN 17 2011

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN IA...EXTREME NERN MO AND PART OF NWRN IL

CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

VALID 171235Z - 171700Z

A TRANSITION FROM LIGHT SNOW TO SLEET AND LIGHT FREEZING RAIN IS
EXPECTED TO OCCUR FROM W-E THIS MORNING. THIS TRANSITION IN
PRECIPITATION TYPE IS EXPECTED OVER SERN IA AND EXTREME NERN MO
THROUGH 15Z...AND THEN INTO PART OF NWRN IL BETWEEN 15-18Z.
PRECIPITATION RATES HAVE BEEN GENERALLY AOB 0.05 IN/3HR...THUS
FAR...ACROSS SRN IA...WITH LOCALIZED TOTAL AMOUNTS UP TO 0.1 INCH.
GIVEN THE LACK OF GREATER MOISTURE ADVECTION INTO THE MID-UPPER MS
VALLEY...SIMILAR RATES SHOULD OCCUR THIS MORNING ACROSS THE
DISCUSSION AREA.

EARLY MORNING WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWED A SHORTWAVE TROUGH LOCATED
ACROSS SRN MN INTO CENTRAL IA...WITH THIS FEATURE EXPECTED TO TRACK
ENEWD INTO WI/FAR NRN IL BY MID DAY. 40-50 KT SWLY LLJ EXTENDING
FROM CENTRAL KS TO CENTRAL IA PER 11Z WIND PROFILERS/WSR-88D VAD
WILL SHIFT EWD THIS MORNING AND SHOULD EXTEND FROM NERN MO TO NRN
IL/SERN WI AND LAKE MI BY 18Z. DEEP LAYER ASCENT ATTENDANT TO THE
SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND STRONG LOW LEVEL WAA ALONG THE LLJ WILL SUPPORT
THE PRECIPITATION SHIELD SPREADING ENEWD ALONG THE TRACK OF THIS
SYSTEM.

10Z RUC REMAINS CONSISTENT WITH EARLIER MODELS SUGGESTING THE
PORTION OF THE 850 MB 0 C LINE IN IA/IL WILL MOVE NEWD CONCURRENT TO
THE EWD SHIFT OF THE LLJ THIS MORNING...AND SHOULD EXTEND FROM 30 W
CID-5 NNE MLI-10 WNW DEC BY 18Z. THE LOCATION OF THE LLJ THROUGH
THE MORNING IS EXPECTED TO DELINEATE THE AREA RECEIVING THE GREATEST
POTENTIAL FOR SLEET AND LIGHT FREEZING RAIN...AS THE CONTINUED
INCREASE IN TEMPERATURES IN THE 850-900 MB LAYER ATOP SUB-FREEZING
SURFACE TEMPERATURES SUPPORT AN INITIAL TRANSITION TO SLEET AND THEN
MAINLY LIGHT FREEZING RAIN.

ACUS01 KWNS 171235
SWODY1
SPC AC 171233

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0633 AM CST MON JAN 17 2011

VALID 171300Z - 181200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS SRN FL PENINSULA INCLUDING THE
KEYS...

...SRN FL...
BROAD UPPER TROUGH SHIFTING EWD ACROSS GOM WITH A COUPLE S/WVS
EVIDENT ON W/V IMAGERY. WITH ONE JUST S OF LA...THE MORE IMPORTANT
S/W WITH REGARDS TO ANY SEVERE THREAT TODAY IS CURRENTLY OVER THE
ERN GULF AND WILL BE CROSSING FL PENINSULA BY THIS EVENING WITH
ASSOCIATED STRONG MID/UPPER LEVEL JET.

AIR MASS QUALITY AND LOW LEVEL SHEAR ARE THE PRIMARY LIMITING
PARAMETERS REGARDING DEVELOPMENT OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. A RATHER
WEAK SURFACE LOW THAT HAS DEVELOPED OVER ERN GULF TO THE W OF TPA IS
PROGGED TO CROSS THE NRN PORTION OF PENINSULA BY THIS EVENING AND
BEGIN A DEEPENING PROCESS OFF THE SERN COAST BY 12Z TUE. WARM FRONT
NOW LIFTING NWD THRU THE KEYS WILL ALLOW LOW LEVEL AIR MASS TO
MOISTEN AND SLOWLY DESTABILIZE INTO THE S HALF OF FL PENINSULA
DURING THE DAY WITH DEWPOINTS RISING INTO THE LOW/MID 60S. GIVEN
THE AMOUNT OF CLOUD COVER AND ONGOING CONVECTION OVER ERN GULF THERE
IS CONCERN THAT LACK OF STRONG HEATING WILL LIMIT THE DESTABILIZING
PROCESS.

HOWEVER AS EVIDENT ON THE SHEAR PROFILES OFF THE 12Z SOUNDINGS FOR
TPA AND MIA ALONG WITH THE PERIODIC ROTATION NOTED IN THE CONVECTION
ALONG THE WARM FRONT SHIFTING NWD THRU THE KEYS...A THREAT FOR
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT ACROSS SRN FL WILL BE CONTINUED AT
LEAST THRU THE AFTERNOON UNTIL THE S/WV TROUGH PASSES TO THE E. THE
STRONGEST DESTABILIZATION WOULD SEEM MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR VICINITY
ERN COAST OF SRN FL WHERE SURFACE HEATING POTENTIAL WOULD BE
GREATER. NEVERTHELESS IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO RAISE MLCAPES TOO
MUCH MORE THAN ABOUT 500 J/KG. THIS WOULD BE SUFFICIENT WITH THE
EXPECTED SHEAR PROFILES...PARTICULARLY VICINITY THE WARM FRONT TO
SUPPORT ISOLATED SUPERCELL/TORNADO POTENTIAL.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0348 AM CST MON JAN 17 2011

VALID 201200Z - 251200Z

...DISCUSSION...

CONSENSUS IS THAT SYNOPTIC TROUGH WILL REMAIN DOMINANT OVER THE ERN
U.S. MOST OF THE 4-8 PERIOD. PATTERN WILL GENERALLY NOT BE FAVORABLE
FOR SUBSTANTIAL MOISTURE RETURN INLAND. HOWEVER...MODELS HAVE
CONVERGED ON SOLUTION THAT A NRN STREAM IMPULSE WILL AMPLIFY SEWD
INTO THE OH VALLEY DAY 4. CONCURRENTLY WSWLY FLOW WILL BECOME
ESTABLISHED OVER THE GULF COASTAL AREA DOWNSTREAM FROM PROGRESSIVE
SRN STREAM TROUGH THAT WILL BECOME LOOSELY PHASED WITH NRN STREAM.
SWLY LOW-LEVEL WINDS WILL STRENGTHEN WITHIN ZONE OF HEIGHT FALLS
ALONG GULF COAST LATE THURSDAY AND SHIFTING EWD INTO FL FRIDAY. A
MARGINAL THREAT FOR STRONG OR SEVERE STORMS COULD EVOLVE ALONG THE
GULF COAST THURSDAY NIGHT BUT MORE LIKELY OVER THE FL PENINSULA
FRIDAY. LIMITED DURATION OF THE RETURN FLOW AND EXPECTED WEAK LAPSE
RATES SUGGEST THE THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT WILL LIKELY REMAIN
MARGINAL. FOR THIS REASON...A SEVERE WEATHER THREAT AREA WILL NOT BE
INTRODUCED AT THIS TIME.

BEYOND DAY 5...REINFORCING SURGE OF CP AIR IS FORECAST TO ADVANCE
INTO THE GULF...WHICH WILL RESULT IN LOW THUNDERSTORM AND SEVERE
POTENTIAL.

ERN U.S. SYNOPTIC TROUGH WILL UNDERGO TEMPORARY DEAMPLIFICATION
WEDNESDAY AS ANOTHER IN A SERIES OF SHORTWAVE TROUGHS CRESTS THE WRN
U.S. UPPER RIDGE AND AMPLIFIES SWD INTO THE SRN ROCKIES. AT THE

RETURNING THROUGH S TX AS SURFACE LOW DEVELOPS OVER THE SRN HIGH
PLAINS IN RESPONSE TO THE AMPLIFYING SHORTWAVE TROUGH. THIS INITIAL
RETURN OF MOISTURE WILL LIKELY BE INSUFFICIENT FOR ANY SUBSTANTIAL
DESTABILIZATION DUE TO EWD ADVECTION OF A WARM CAPPING LAYER ALOFT.
AS A RESULT...THUNDERSTORM PROSPECTS SHOULD REMAIN LOW DURING THE

BROAD UPPER TROUGH WILL PERSIST OVER THE ERN HALF OF U.S. TUESDAY.
SHORTWAVE TROUGH THAT WILL AFFECT THE FL PENINSULA MONDAY WILL EJECT
NEWD ALONG THE ERN SEABOARD INDUCING A SURFACE CYCLONE THAT WILL
LIFT NWD ALONG MID ATLANTIC AND NEW ENGLAND COASTS. CONVECTION
INCLUDING A FEW THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT THE OUTER BANKS OF NC
EARLY TUESDAY...BUT MOST OF THE ACTIVITY SHOULD BE MOVING OFFSHORE
BY 12Z OR SHORTLY AFTER. UPPER JET STREAK IS FORECAST TO ADVANCE
INTO THE BASE OF TROUGH OVER THE SERN STATES. SOME CONVECTION MAY
DEVELOP ALONG THE GULF COASTAL AREA WHERE A SWLY LLJ COUPLED WITHIN
UPPER JET EXIT REGION WILL CONTRIBUTE TO FORCING FOR ASCENT.
HOWEVER...FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE CLOUD TEMPERATURES MAY REMAIN
TOO WARM IN THE CONVECTIVE LAYER FOR SUBSTANTIAL ELECTRIFICATION.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

VALID 171200Z - 181200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE SRN AND
CNTRL FL PENINSULA...

...SRN AND CNTRL FL PENINSULA...
A LARGE-SCALE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE WRN GULF OF MEXICO WILL
MOVE QUICKLY EWD TODAY. IN RESPONSE TO THE APPROACHING UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH...A LOW-LEVEL JET WILL DEVELOP THIS MORNING OVER THE ERN GULF
OF MEXICO AND STRENGTHEN QUICKLY AFTER DAYBREAK ON THE WRN EDGE OF
THE FL PENINSULA. THIS WILL HELP TO INCREASE CONVECTION WITH
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY BEGINNING TO AFFECT THE WRN PENINSULA DURING
THE 12Z TO 15Z TIMEFRAME. DUE TO THE TIMING OF THE CONVECTION...THE
GREATEST SFC HEATING THIS MORNING SHOULD OCCUR OUT AHEAD OF THE
STORMS AROUND LAKE OKEECHOBEE AND NEAR MIAMI.

ALTHOUGH THE AIRMASS HAS YET TO MOISTEN...SFC DEWPOINTS ARE FORECAST
TO REACH THE MID 60S F BY EARLY AFTERNOON ACROSS SRN FL. BECAUSE OF
THIS...ETA-KF FORECAST SOUNDINGS DEVELOP MODERATE INSTABILITY BY
AFTERNOON WITH MLCAPE VALUES REACHING THE 1000 TO 1500 J/KG RANGE.
IN ADDITION...A 60 TO 75 KT MID-LEVEL JET IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS
THE CNTRL PENINSULA THIS AFTERNOON. THIS FEATURE WILL REINFORCE
MODERATE DEEP LAYER SHEAR ACROSS SOUTH FL HELPING TO PRODUCE AN
ENVIRONMENT SUPPORTIVE OF ROTATING STORMS. AS THE LOW-LEVEL JET
BROADENS AND DEVELOPS SWD ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST COAST THIS
AFTERNOON...LOW-LEVEL SHEAR MAY BECOME STRONG ENOUGH FOR AN ISOLATED
TORNADO THREAT. IF SOME CELLS CAN REMAIN DISCRETE...THEN A TORNADO
OR TWO COULD OCCUR AROUND MIAMI THIS AFTERNOON AND THE WRF-NMM
HI-RES MODEL IS IN AGREEMENT WITH THIS IDEA. SUPERCELLS SHOULD ALSO
BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING WIND DAMAGE AND THIS MAY BECOME THE FAVORED
THREAT IF A LINE-SEGMENT CAN ORGANIZE LATE THIS AFTERNOON. FURTHER
NORTH ACROSS THE CNTRL PENINSULA...LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE SHOULD BE A
LIMITATION. HOWEVER...THE STRONG SHEAR MAY ENABLE SOME STORMS TO
ROTATE THERE AS WELL.
