VALID 050150Z - 050315Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
806...807...CONTINUES.

DAMAGING MCS AND POTENTIAL DERECHO EVENT SO FAR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR
SWATH OF DAMAGING WIND FROM RFD-CHI AREAS -- INCLUDING MEASURED 51
KT GUST AT MDW AT 106Z...AND 82 KT GUST AT 125Z AT C-MAN BUOY ON LM.
ACTIVITY SHOULD PROCEED ESEWD ACROSS REMAINDER WW THEN INTO
PORTIONS EXTREME SRN LOWER MI AND OH. ANOTHER WW MAY BE REQUIRED
BEFORE 03Z.

WELL-DEVELOPED BOW ECHO SYSTEM IS INTERACTING WITH VORTICITY-RICH
LOW LEVEL BOUNDARY REMAINING FROM EARLY-DAY OUTFLOW. THIS BOUNDARY
STILL IS ANALYZED IN WNW-ESE ORIENTATION AND MOVING SLOWLY NWD
ACROSS NWRN/E-CENTRAL INDIANA. ASSOCIATED INSTABILITY/MOISTURE
GRADIENTS SHOULD CONTINUE TO FORM PREFERRED CORRIDOR FOR
FORWARD-PROPAGATION OF MCS...AND GREATEST ACCOMPANYING DAMAGING WIND
POTENTIAL. MODIFIED RAOBS AND RUC SOUNDINGS INDICATE THAT SBCINH
WILL INCREASE WITH EWD EXTENT AND WITH TIME IN PROSPECTIVE INFLOW
LAYER. HOWEVER...EFFECTIVE INFLOW PARCELS WILL REMAIN ROOTED AT OR
NEAR SFC FOR SEVERAL MORE HOURS...AND STRONG FORCED ASCENT IS
EXPECTED TO PERSIST ALONG LEADING EDGE OF SYSTEM. DAMAGING GUSTS
SHOULD CONTINUE...ALONG WITH THREAT OF OCCASIONAL/BRIEF TORNADOES
FROM QLCS SPINUPS AND BOOKEND VORTICES. STG-SVR WIND ALSO MAY
CONTINUE FOR UP TO HALF AN HOUR BEHIND LEADING SURGE OF
MCS...ASSOCIATED WITH REAR-INFLOW JET.

INITIATION ALONG TRAILING OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WILL BECOME LESS PROBABLE
WITH TIME AS BOUNDARY LAYER TO ITS S UNDERGOES GRADUAL DIABATIC
COOLING...AND SLOPE OF COLD POOL NEAR BOUNDARY BECOMES MORE SHALLOW.
HOWEVER...LOW LEVEL WAA ZONE -- WITH ISENTROPIC ASCENT TO LFC --
MAY DEVELOP FARTHER NE ATOP COLD POOL...WITH ELEVATED MUCAPES
2000-3000 J/KG REMAINING IN ENVIRONMENT OF AT LEAST MRGLLY FAVORABLE
DEEP-LAYER SHEAR. MAIN CONCERN WITH ANY SUCH POST-MCS ACTIVITY
WOULD BE ISOLATED LARGE HAIL.

CORRECTED FOR TYPE OF WATCH

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 804 CONTINUES.

THREAT FOR MAINLY ISOLATED LARGE HAIL WILL PERSIST NEXT FEW HOURS
FROM SERN MN SPREADING ESEWD THROUGH CNTRL AND SRN WI. SOME STORMS
ARE BEGINNING MOVE OUT OF WW 804 INTO CNTRL WI...BUT STORMS SO FAR
APPEAR ONLY LOOSELY ORGANIZED WITH ALGORITHMS INDICATING MARGINALLY
SEVERE HAIL. A WW DOWNSTREAM OF WW 804 WILL PROBABLY NOT BE NEEDED
UNLESS STORMS BEGIN TO SHOW SIGNS OF INTENSIFICATION OR BETTER
ORGANIZATION.

EARLY THIS MORNING A WARM FRONT EXTENDS FROM A SURFACE LOW NEAR THE
IA-MN BORDER SEWD THROUGH ERN IA. COLD FRONT EXTENDS SWWD FROM THE
LOW THROUGH NW IA AND ERN NEB. SWLY LOW LEVEL JET EXTENDING FROM THE
CNTRL PLAINS NEWD THROUGH IA IS FORECAST TO VEER TO WLY WITH TIME AS
A SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVES EWD THROUGH MN AND CRESTS UPPER RIDGE. THIS
WILL RESULT IN PRIMARY ZONE OF WARM ADVECTION AND ISENTROPIC LIFT
SHIFTING EWD AND SEWD INTO CNTRL AND SRN WI. THUS STORMS WILL LIKELY
SPREAD ESEWD ALONG INSTABILITY GRADIENT THROUGH WI NEXT SEVERAL
HOURS. RUC PFCS SHOW MODERATE TO STRONG MUCAPE AND STEEP MID LEVEL
LAPSE RATES IN THIS REGION SUFFICIENT FOR A THREAT OF ISOLATED LARGE
HAIL. HOWEVER...EFFECTIVE SHEAR FOR ELEVATED STORMS IS RATHER MODEST
WITH EWD AND SWD EXTENT INTO WI...AND THIS MAY PROVIDE A LIMITING

SPC AC 040559

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1259 AM CDT MON AUG 04 2008

VALID 051200Z - 061200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS PARTS OF THE GREAT
LAKES/MIDWEST/OH VALLEY...

...SYNOPSIS...
MID-LEVEL TROUGH IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE BUILDING SLOWLY SSEWD OUT
OF CANADA...WITH THE FIRST PIECE OF ENERGY -- IN THE FORM OF A
SHORT-WAVE TROUGH -- FORECAST TO CROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION THIS
PERIOD. THIS WILL BEGIN TO SUPPRESS THE MID-LEVEL RIDGE SWD ACROSS
THE ERN CONUS...BUT PERMIT A WWD/NWWD STRENGTHENING OF THE RIDGE
ACROSS THE U.S./CANADIAN ROCKIES.

AT THE SURFACE...A COLD FRONT IS FORECAST TO MOVE SEWD ACROSS THE
GREAT LAKES/SSEWD ACROSS THE MIDWEST...IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE
EXPANDING ERN U.S. UPPER TROUGH. THIS FRONT -- AND THE ASSOCIATED
SHORT-WAVE FEATURE MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY -- SHOULD BE THE PRIMARY
FOCUS FOR WIDESPREAD/SEVERE CONVECTION OVER PORTIONS OF THE NERN
QUARTER OF THE CONUS THROUGH THE PERIOD.

...PORTIONS OF THE GREAT LAKES/OH VALLEY/NORTHEAST CONUS...
THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST TO BE ONGOING AT THE START OF THE PERIOD
ACROSS THE MIDWEST/GREAT LAKES/OH VALLEY REGION...THOUGH MODELS
DIFFER WITH RESPECT TO THE LOCATION OF SMALL-SCALE FEATURES ALOFT --
AND THUS THE ASSOCIATED LOCATION OF MORE WIDESPREAD CONVECTIVE
CLUSTERS EARLY IN THE PERIOD. IN ANY CASE...THE EXPECTATION OF
ONGOING CONVECTION COMPLICATES THE FORECAST...AS
CLOUDS/PRECIPITATION SHOULD LIMIT DESTABILIZATION LOCALLY AND
ASSOCIATED CONVECTIVE BOUNDARIES FOCUS AREAS OF GREATER LIKELIHOOD
FOR STORMS.

OVERALL HOWEVER...COLD FRONT ADVANCING ESEWD ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES
AND SSEWD ACROSS THE MIDWEST/OH VALLEY REGION SHOULD FOCUS AFTERNOON
STORM REDEVELOPMENT AS AIRMASS LOCALLY BECOMES MODERATELY UNSTABLE.

WHILE BOTH INSTABILITY AND THE AREAS OF MOST LIKELY CONVECTIVE
REDEVELOPMENT REMAIN DIFFICULT TO FORECAST ATTM...SHEAR IS EXPECTED
TO BE QUITE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE STORMS. FLOW IS FORECAST TO BE
ROUGHLY UNIDIRECTIONAL/WNWLY WITH HEIGHT ABOVE THE
SURFACE...INCREASING FROM 20 TO 30 KT AT LOW LEVELS TO ROUGHLY 40 TO
50 KT AT MID LEVELS. MAIN SEVERE THREAT IS FORECAST TO BE DAMAGING
WINDS...WITH THE THREAT POSSIBLY BECOMING FAIRLY WIDESPREAD THROUGH
THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING AS STORMS MERGE INTO MULTIPLE SMALL-SCALE
LINES/BOWS. THREAT SHOULD LAST WELL INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...AS
STORMS SPREAD EWD ACROSS PA/NY AND TOWARD THE MID-ATLANTIC
COAST...AND SEWD ACROSS THE OH VALLEY REGION.

...CENTRAL/NRN HIGH PLAINS REGION...
ELY/SELY UPSLOPE FLOW IN POST-FRONTAL REGIME SHOULD RESULT IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF ISOLATED TO SCATTERED STORMS BY LATE AFTERNOON...AS
AIRMASS BECOMES AT LEAST MARGINALLY UNSTABLE. WITH LOW-LEVEL
ELY/SELY FLOW BENEATH MODERATE WNWLYS AT MID LEVELS...SHEAR WILL
SUPPORT BOTH ORGANIZED/SEVERE STORMS...AND THE LIKELIHOOD FOR SEWD
MOVEMENT OF CONVECTION OFF THE HIGHER TERRAIN THROUGH THE EVENING.
WHILE DEGREE OF THREAT WILL LIKELY BE DEPENDENT UPON THE DEGREE OF
DESTABILIZATION WHICH CAN OCCUR IN AN OTHERWISE POST-FRONTAL
AIRMASS...THREAT APPEARS SUFFICIENT TO INTRODUCE LOW /5%/ SEVERE
PROBABILITY THIS FORECAST.

...WRN GULF COAST...
TROPICAL SYSTEM EDOUARD IS FORECAST TO MAKE LANDFALL NEAR GALVESTON
BAY EARLY IN THE PERIOD...PER LATEST FORECASTS FROM THE NHC.
ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL SHEAR ALONG THE N SIDE OF EDOUARDS TRACK MAY BE
SUFFICIENT FOR AN ENHANCED THREAT FOR BRIEF TORNADOES -- AND THUS
WILL INCLUDE A SMALL/LOW-PROBABILITY THREAT AREA TO REFLECT THIS
THREAT.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 040554
SWODY1
SPC AC 040551

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1251 AM CDT MON AUG 04 2008

VALID 041200Z - 051200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE DAKOTAS INTO THE NRN
OH VALLEY AND PARTS OF LOWER MI...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF SRN LA INTO THE
UPPER TX COAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

A BROADLY CYCLONIC LARGE-SCALE PATTERN OVER THE N-CNTRL STATES WILL
UNDERGO AMPLIFICATION THIS PERIOD AS A SHORT WAVE TROUGH TRANSLATES
EWD FROM THE NRN HIGH PLAINS THROUGH THE UPPER MS VALLEY. THIS
IMPULSE WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A BELT OF 45-55 KT FLOW IN THE
MIDLEVELS...INCREASING TO 75-90 KT IN THE UPPER TROPOSPHERE. AT THE
SURFACE...A WEAK...LEAD SURFACE LOW WILL DEVELOP ENEWD FROM NERN IA
INTO LOWER MI WITH A BOUNDARY TRAILING WWD THROUGH THE MID MO VALLEY
TO LOW PRESSURE OVER THE CNTRL HIGH PLAINS. MEANWHILE...A COLD
FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED SHORT WAVE TROUGH WILL PUSH
SEWD THROUGH THE NRN PLAINS AND UPPER MS VALLEY TODAY INTO TONIGHT.

...NRN/CNTRL PLAINS INTO LOWER MI...

A COMPLEX FORECAST EXISTS THIS PERIOD DUE TO ANTICIPATED...ONGOING
MCS/S OVER WI AND THE NRN HIGH PLAINS AT 04/12Z. WHILE LEAD SHORT
WAVE TROUGH /NOW OVER THE UPPER MS VALLEY/ CONTINUES TO LIFT NEWD
ACROSS SRN ONTARIO...AN ATTENDANT WSWLY LLJ WILL MAINTAIN AN INFLUX
OF A MOIST LOW-LEVEL AIR MASS INTO WRN FLANK OF WI MCS. THIS
MOISTURE COMBINED WITH THE EWD ADVECTION OF INCREASINGLY STEEP
MIDLEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERATE
INSTABILITY BY AFTERNOON /MLCAPES OF 1500-2500 J PER KG/ ACROSS
PARTS OF LOWER MI AND THE WRN/CNTRL OH VALLEY. THIS INSTABILITY IN
CONCERT WITH THE PERSISTENT WAA ALONG NOSE OF LLJ SHOULD EITHER: 1)
MAINTAIN WI MCS MORE SEWD ACROSS LOWER MI PERHAPS INTO NRN PORTIONS
OF IND/OH...OR 2) SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF DIURNAL STORMS ALONG
OUTFLOW BOUNDARY REMNANT FROM WI MCS SHOULD IT DECAY. THE PRESENCE
OF 30-35 KT DEEP-LAYER SHEAR WILL PROMOTE ORGANIZED
STORMS...INCLUDING THE POTENTIAL FOR BOWING AND/OR SUPERCELL
STRUCTURES WITH THE PRIMARY SEVERE THREATS BEING DAMAGING WINDS AND
HAIL.

FARTHER W...MORE UNCERTAINTY EXISTS WITH REGARD TO CONVECTIVE
EVOLUTION FROM THE DAKOTAS AND NEB EWD INTO MN/IA. AS MENTIONED
ABOVE...IT APPEARS THAT AN MCS WILL BE ONGOING AT THE ONSET OF THE
FORECAST OVER SERN MT INTO THE WRN DAKOTAS IN ADVANCE OF SHORT WAVE
TROUGH MOVING ACROSS MT. THE RICHEST BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE AND
STRONGEST CONVECTIVE INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN CONFINED TO
QUASI-STATIONARY E-W BOUNDARY ACROSS NEB/IA WHERE MLCAPES WILL
APPROACH 2500-4000 J/KG. FARTHER NW...LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE WILL BE
COMPARATIVELY LESS...BUT STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL STILL CONTRIBUTE TO
POCKETS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY ACROSS SD IN ADVANCE OF SECONDARY
FRONTAL SURGE.

DIURNAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT APPEARS MOST LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON ALONG:
1) REMNANT MCS OUTFLOW AND/OR SECONDARY FRONTAL SURGE OVER WRN/CNTRL
SD...AND 2) E-W FRONTAL ZONE OVER NEB/IA. THE COMBINATION OF THE
MODERATE TO STRONG INSTABILITY AND 35-50 KT OF EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR
SUGGESTS THE POTENTIAL FOR SUPERCELLS WITH THE THREAT FOR A COUPLE
OF TORNADOES...LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. STORMS SHOULD GROW
UPSCALE INTO AN MCS /POSSIBLE BOW ECHO/ TONIGHT WITH A HAIL AND
DAMAGING WIND THREAT SPREADING EWD ACROSS THE REGION. UNCERTAINTY
EXISTS IN THE EVOLUTION AND TRACK OF ANY MCS THAT MAY
EVOLVE...THEREFORE HIGHER SEVERE PROBABILITIES AND A CATEGORICAL
UPGRADE WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THIS FORECAST.

...SRN LA INTO THE UPPER TX COAST...

LATEST NHC FORECASTS TAKE T.S. EDOUARD WNWWD ACROSS THE NWRN GULF OF
MEXICO TO NEAR GALVESTON BAY BY TUESDAY MORNING. FORECAST SOUNDINGS
INDICATE THAT A MOIST/UNSTABLE AND MODESTLY SHEARED ENVIRONMENT WILL
EXIST ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST WITHIN NRN SEMICIRCLE OF SYSTEM. AS
SUCH...THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR A FEW ORGANIZED/ROTATING STORMS
TO AFFECT THE IMMEDIATE COAST...ESPECIALLY THIS AFTERNOON WHERE
DIABATIC HEATING WILL EFFECTIVELY BOOST INSTABILITY. A BRIEF
TORNADO OR TWO AND/OR LOCALLY DAMAGING WIND GUSTS APPEAR TO BE THE
PRIMARY THREATS WITH THE MOST INTENSE STORMS.

...AZ/NM...

SCATTERED...DIURNAL STORMS ARE ONCE AGAIN EXPECTED TODAY OVER THE
HIGHER TERRAIN WITHIN A RELATIVELY MOIST AND STEEP LOW-LEVEL LAPSE
RATE ENVIRONMENT. 10-15 KT ELY MIDLEVEL FLOW MAY ALLOW FOR STORMS
TO MOVE/PROPAGATE WWD/SWWD INTO THE LOWER ELEVATIONS WITH THE
POTENTIAL FOR WET MICROBURST ACTIVITY WITH ANY MORE INTENSE STORM
CLUSTERS.
