DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0334 AM CDT THU SEP 13 2012

VALID 161200Z - 211200Z

...DISCUSSION...
SEVERE POTENTIAL SHOULD REMAIN LOW THROUGH DAY 4 AS RICHER BOUNDARY
LAYER MOISTURE REMAINS SOUTH OF BELT OF STRONGER WLYS OVER THE NRN
TIER STATES.

DAY 5-6...GENERAL CONSENSUS AMONG DETERMINISTIC AND ENSEMBLE MODEL
SOLUTIONS IS THAT AN UPPER TROUGH WILL AMPLIFY OVER THE ERN HALF OF
THE COUNTRY. DIFFERENCES IN DETAILS SUCH AS DEGREE OF AMPLIFICATION
AND TIMING PERSIST. IT STILL APPEARS THAT PARTIALLY MODIFIED GULF
AIR WILL BEGIN RETURNING NWD INTO THE PRE-FRONTAL WARM SECTOR OVER
THE MID MS AND OH VALLEYS MONDAY /DAY 5/. AT LEAST SOME THREAT FOR
SEVERE STORMS COULD DEVELOP IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE AMPLIFYING
TROUGH AND ITS ATTENDANT COLD FRONT...WITH THREAT CONTINUING INTO
THE MID ATLANTIC AND NERN STATES DAY 6. AT THIS TIME TOO MUCH
UNCERTAINTY EXISTS REGARDING DEGREE OF AMPLIFICATION OF UPPER TROUGH
AND EXTENT OF CLOUDS/DESTABILIZATION POTENTIAL IN WARM SECTORS...BUT
THESE AREAS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED FOR A POSSIBLE SEVERE RISK
IN LATER OUTLOOKS.

SPC AC 130521

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1221 AM CDT THU SEP 13 2012

VALID 141200Z - 151200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

COMPACT NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE GREAT
LAKES...OH VALLEY AND INTO THE NERN U.S. FRIDAY. A SRN STREAM UPPER
LOW EMBEDDED WITHIN WEAK FLOW ALOFT OVER AZ WILL DRIFT SLOWLY INTO
NEW MEXICO BY EARLY FRIDAY...AND SEVERAL VORTICITY MAXIMA WILL
ROTATE THROUGH THIS FEATURE. UPPER LOW CIRCULATION NOW OVER THE SERN
STATES IS FORECAST TO SHEAR EWD AS IT INTERACTS WITH SRN FRINGE OF
WLYS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROGRESSIVE NRN STREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH. AT
THE SFC A COLD FRONT...LIKELY EXTENDING FROM THE LOWER GREAT LAKES
SWWD INTO SWRN TX EARLY FRIDAY WILL CONTINUE INTO THE NERN STATES
AND MID ATLANTIC...WHILE TRAILING PORTION MAY STALL OVER S TX.

...SERN TX...

WEAK MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND AREAS OF CLOUDS SHOULD LIMIT OVERALL
DESTABILIZATION POTENTIAL IN PRE-FRONTAL WARM SECTOR ACROSS SE TX.
WHERE DIABATIC WARMING DOES OCCUR MLCAPE FROM 1000-1500 J/KG MAY
DEVELOP GIVEN THE MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER IN PLACE. THE MOIST AND
WEAKLY CAPPED ENVIRONMENT WILL SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF STORMS IN WARM
SECTOR...BUT THE CIRCULATION AROUND THE NM UPPER LOW WILL ALSO
PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF POST FRONTAL CONVECTION. THOUGH ISOLATED
STRONG GUSTS CANNOT BE RULED OUT WITH THE WARM SECTOR STORMS...WEAK
VERTICAL SHEAR AND A MARGINAL THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT SUGGEST ANY
SEVERE THREAT SHOULD REMAIN LOW.

...OH VALLEY THROUGH NERN STATES...

BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN LIMITED ALONG
NERN EXTENSION OF THE COLD FRONT. HOWEVER...BANDS OF MOSTLY LOW
TOPPED CONVECTION MAY DEVELOP WITHIN FRONTAL ZONE. SOME OF THIS
ACTIVITY MIGHT BECOME CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LIGHTNING STRIKES...BUT
OVERALL THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE SHOULD REMAIN SPARSE DUE TO EXPECTED
MARGINAL THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 130452
SWODY1
SPC AC 130451

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1151 PM CDT WED SEP 12 2012

VALID 131200Z - 141200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

AN UPPER TROUGH SITUATED FROM THE UPPER MIDWEST SWWD INTO THE SRN
ROCKIES WILL MOVE LITTLE OVER ITS SRN HALF AS THE NRN STREAM REMAINS
PROGRESSIVE AND A SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVES EWD FROM THE NRN PLAINS TO
THE WRN GREAT LAKES. THE INFLUENCE OF THE UPPER TROUGH ALONG WITH A
COLD FRONT CONTINUING EWD ACROSS THE MID MS RIVER VALLEY AND SWD
ACROSS THE SRN PLAINS...WILL SERVE AS THE PRIMARY FOCUSING
MECHANISMS FOR SHOWER/TSTM DEVELOPMENT THURSDAY FROM THE DESERT SW
THROUGH THE SRN PLAINS...AND NEWD TO THE MID MS RIVER VALLEY. THE
ANAFRONTAL CHARACTER OF THE OK/TX PORTION OF THE FRONT WILL TEND TO
RETARD STRONGER BUOYANCY...AND COMBINED WITH A WEAK WIND
PROFILE...UPDRAFT STRENGTH/LONGEVITY WILL REMAIN LIMITED. MODELS
INDICATE THE GREATEST INSTABILITY MAY DEVELOP IN SERN OK AND THE
ARKLATEX...WHERE AN ISOLD STRONG PULSE STORM OR TWO MAY DEVELOP
DURING THE AFTERNOON...BUT POTENTIAL APPEARS TOO LOW TO INTRODUCE
LOW WIND PROBABILITIES ATTM.
