..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL WILL REMAIN NEGLIGIBLE ACROSS MUCH OF THE
CONUS TODAY IN WAKE OF DEEP MID LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE CENTRAL/ERN
STATES.

..S FL...
ONE EXCEPTION WILL BE OVER SOUTH FL WHERE A VERY MOIST AND
MARGINALLY BUOYANT BOUNDARY LAYER REMAINS IN PLACE AHEAD OF SWD
MOVING COLD FRONT. ALTHOUGH SHEAR IS MODEST OVER SOUTH FL...WEAK
MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND LOW LEVEL SHEAR SHOULD ONCE AGAIN LIMIT
OVERALL SEVERE THREAT WITH THESE STORMS.

..LOWER OH RIVER VALLEY...
LOW-TOPPED MOIST CONVECTION IS EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD THE LOWER OH
RIVER VALLEY TODAY AS SECONDARY IMPULSE/VORT MAX AND MID LEVEL COLD
TROUGH /H5 TEMPS AOB -34C/ DEVELOP SEWD. THERMAL STRATIFICATION MAY
BE SUFFICIENT FOR A FEW LIGHTNING STRIKES WITH THIS SHALLOW
CONVECTION THIS AFTERNOON.

..PAC NW...
VERY COLD MID LEVEL AIR ASSOCIATED WITH STRONG UPPER LOW OFF THE PAC
NW COAST WILL SPREAD EWD IN WAKE OF STRONG COLD FRONT MOVING INLAND
TODAY. COMBINATION OF STRONG ONSHORE/UPSLOPE FLOW AND INCREASING
DEEP ASCENT WITHIN EXIT REGION OF NOSE OF 130+ KT UPPER JET WILL
BECOME FAVORABLE FOR A FEW LOW-TOPPED THUNDERSTORMS ALONG AND WEST
OF THE COASTAL RANGE LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT GIVEN STEEPENING LOW
LEVEL LAPSE RATES.

DAY 4-8 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0352 AM CDT SUN MAR 23 2008

VALID 261200Z - 311200Z

..DISCUSSION...
IN LOW LEVELS...SEVERAL DAYS OF MARINE MODIFICATION WILL ENSUE
ACROSS GULF...AFTER INTRUSION OF CONTINENTAL-POLAR AIR MASS DAY-2.
ALOFT...LARGELY ZONAL MEAN FLOW FIELD WILL BE PERTURBED BY SERIES OF
SHORTWAVES...STRONGEST OF WHICH MAY CROSS NRN ROCKIES
DAY-4/26TH-27TH...THEN N-CENTRAL PLAINS AND UPPER MS VALLEY
DAY-5/27TH-28TH. ECMWF/UKMET ARE VERY SIMILAR WITH THIS EVOLUTION
AND RESULTANT SFC FEATURES...WHEREAS MORE DISPARATE GFS RUNS FROM
DETERMINISTIC AND MREFS APPEAR TO BE LOWER CONFIDENCE SOLUTIONS.
UPPER PATTERN MOST PROBABLE FOR DAY-4 SHOULD RESULT IN INCREASINGLY
WELL DEFINED SFC DRYLINE CENTRAL/SRN PLAINS...BUT ALSO ROBUST
ELEVATED MIXED LAYER WITH ATTENDANT CAPPING CONCERNS...AND STRONGEST
MOISTURE RETURN DISPLACED HORIZONTALLY FROM MOST FAVORABLE LOW LEVEL
LIFT. SVR BECOMES MORE PROBABLE DAY-5 SRN PLAINS...AS RICHER
MOISTURE RETURN ENCOUNTERS STRENGTHENING DEEP-LAYER WINDS...DRYLINE
LIFT SOURCE...AND FRONTAL INTRUSION. SVR AREA IS SUBJECT TO
CONSIDERABLE CHANGE IN SHAPE/POSITION IN FUTURE OUTLOOKS GIVEN
DIFFERENCES STILL EVIDENT ACROSS BULK OF GUIDANCE PACKAGES FOR
POSITION OF MAIN BOUNDARIES.

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
IN MID-UPPER LEVELS...SYNOPTIC-SCALE PATTERN IS FCST TO DEAMPLIFY
FROM DAY-2 INTO DAY-3 AS ERN CONUS TROUGHING MOVES
OFFSHORE...LEAVING STRONGLY ZONAL COMPONENT OF FLOW OVER MOST OF
CONUS. SHORTWAVE TROUGH -- NOW EVIDENT IN MOISTURE CHANNEL IMAGERY
WELL W OF PACIFIC NW...NEAR 140W -- IS FCST TO MOVE EWD THROUGH WEAK
MEAN RIDGE OVER ROCKIES DAY-2. THIS PERTURBATION WILL REINFORCE
TROUGHING THAT WILL EXTEND ACROSS UPPER GREAT LAKES REGION...WHILE
ASSOCIATED SFC LOW MOVES EWD ACROSS LS AND NRN ONT.

BY ABOUT 26/00Z...ASSOCIATED SFC COLD FRONT SHOULD EXTEND FROM
AFOREMENTIONED SFC LOW SWWD ACROSS MO AND NRN OK/SRN KS
AREA...BECOMING QUASISTATIONARY IMMEDIATELY E OF DEEPENING LEE
CYCLONE OVER TX PANHANDLE. STEEP LAPSE RATES ASSOCIATED WITH
ELEVATED MIXED LAYER...AS WELL AS FAVORABLE DEEP-LAYER
SHEAR...SHOULD DEVELOP ACROSS SRN PLAINS...ALONG AND S OF FRONT.
HOWEVER...SVR IS NOT ANTICIPATED BECAUSE OF COMBINATION OF
1. STG CAPPING AT BASE OF EML...AND
2. LACK OF WARM SECTOR MOISTURE...DUE TO IMMATURITY OF GULF AIR MASS

..NO TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
ERN CONUS SYNOPTIC TROUGH WILL BE MAINTAINED FOR ONE MORE DAY THIS
PERIOD...AS SEVERAL RELATIVELY LOW-AMPLITUDE PERTURBATIONS NOW OVER
UPPER MIDWEST CONSOLIDATE INTO STG SHORTWAVE TROUGH. LATTER TROUGH
SHOULD AMPLIFY OVER SRN APPALACHIANS EARLY IN PERIOD...THEN SHOULD
MOVE OFFSHORE CAROLINAS ROUGHLY 25/00Z.

IN LOW LEVELS...POST-FRONTAL...CONTINENTAL BASED...ANTICYCLONIC
TRAJECTORIES ACROSS NRN GULF AND ADJACENT STATES WILL KEEP
APPRECIABLE MOISTURE SHUNTED AWAY FROM CONUS...AND MINIMIZE
POTENTIAL FOR SUSTAINED/DEEP CONVECTION.

..S-CENTRAL APPALACHIANS/PIEDMONT...
DESPITE MEAGER MOISTURE...DIURNAL/DIABATIC HEATING BENEATH SRN
APPALACHIANS SHORTWAVE TROUGH MAY STEEPEN LOW-MIDDLE LEVEL LAPSE
RATES ENOUGH TO GENERATE SHALLOW/SFC-BASED CONVECTION. MOST NAM-KF
AND SPECTRAL FCST PROFILES SUGGEST CONVECTION WILL REMAIN BELOW
FAVORABLE ICING LAYERS FOR LIGHTNING PRODUCTION. HOWEVER...A FEW
SPECTRAL SOUNDINGS INDICATE SPOTTY INSTANCES OF SOMEWHAT DEEPER BUT
STILL SMALL CAPE OVER THIS REGION -- GENERALLY AOB 200 J/KG.
OVERALL POTENTIAL APPEARS TOO CONDITIONAL/WEAK FOR CATEGORICAL TSTM
