DAY2SVR: Nws Storm Prediction Center Norman Ok

ACUS02 KWNS 081659
SWODY2
SPC AC 081658

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1158 AM CDT TUE SEP 08 2009

VALID 091200Z - 101200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...SYNOPSIS...

LARGE SCALE PATTERN WILL NOT PROVE PARTICULARLY FAVORABLE FOR
ORGANIZED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS DURING THE DAY2 PERIOD AS MID LEVEL
FLOW IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN VERY WEAK OVER THE CONUS AS MORE
PROGRESSIVE WLYS RESIDE OVER CANADA. IN THE ABSENCE OF MEANINGFUL
DEEP LAYER SHEAR...DIURNAL HEATING WILL BE INSTRUMENTAL IN MUCH OF
THE CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT/INTENSIFICATION...THOUGH SUBTLE WEAK
VORTICITY MAXIMA AND ROGUE MCV/S WILL ENHANCE THUNDERSTORM CLUSTERS.

IT APPEARS AN AXIS OF MORE NUMEROUS SHOWERS/THUNDERSTORMS WILL
DEVELOP ALONG SWD-SAGGING FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS THE CNTRL/SRN PLAINS
INTO THE SRN ROCKIES...THOUGH CONVERGENCE ALONG THIS BOUNDARY IS
EXPECTED TO REMAIN RATHER WEAK. EARLY MORNING NAM SUGGESTS A WEAK
MID LEVEL CIRCULATION WILL MEANDER INTO THE SRN HIGH PLAINS WHICH
SHOULD AID CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THIS REGION WHERE MLCAPE
VALUES SHOULD RANGE FROM 500-1000 J/KG...JUST ENOUGH FOR A FEW
ROBUST UPDRAFTS CAPABLE OF GENERATING MAINLY SUB-SEVERE WIND GUSTS.

FARTHER EAST...AN ELONGATED WEAK UPPER LOW WILL RESIDE ACROSS THE
LOWER OH VALLEY INTO THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC. THIS FEATURE WILL
MAINTAIN A SFC LOW JUST OFF THE VA/NC COAST...WITH AN INVERTED
TROUGH EXPECTED TO STRETCH NWWD INTO ERN VA. FORECAST SOUNDINGS FOR
THIS REGION SUGGEST NELY ONSHORE FLOW AND WEAK LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES
WILL SEVERE LIMIT BUOYANCY ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST. IF ANY
THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOP IT APPEARS CONVECTION WILL BE ROOTED WELL
ABOVE THE BOUNDARY LAYER...LIKELY NEAR 700 MB.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1142 AM CDT TUE SEP 08 2009

VALID 081630Z - 091200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE CNTRL/SRN
PLNS...

...TRANSMISSION DELAYED BY COMPUTER PROBLEMS...

...SYNOPSIS...
MT SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE E INTO WRN ND THIS EVE...BEFORE
TURNING NE INTO WRN ONTARIO EARLY WED AS PARENT UPR LOW MOVES SLOWLY
E FROM NRN AB TO NRN MB. OTHERWISE...WEAK MID/UPR LVL FLOW WILL
PERSIST OVER THE REMAINDER OF THE LWR 48. IND CLOSED LOW SHOULD
CONTINUE SLOWLY SE INTO ERN KY BY THE END OF THE PERIOD. IN
RESPONSE...UPR IMPULSE NOW OVER ERN NC LIKELY WILL PIVOT NNEWD...
TAKING ATTENDANT SFC LOW NOW NEAR HATTERAS TO OFF THE MD/VA CST.
BACK WEST...OBSERVED AND FORECAST WIND FIELDS SUGGEST THAT KS MCV
WILL MOVE ONLY VERY SLOWLY E/ESE TODAY...AND MAY REFORM SOMEWHERE
NEAR ITS CURRENT POSITION EARLY WED.

...CNTRL/NRN PLNS THIS AFTN/TONIGHT...
PRESSURE RISES NOW OVER THE NRN HI PLNS SHOULD KEEP COLD FRONT
ASSOCIATED WITH MT IMPULSE MOVING STEADILY E ACROSS THE DAKOTAS
TODAY...AND INTO ERN SD/NW MN TONIGHT. THE FRONT WILL ALSO PROGRESS
SE ACROSS WRN NEB/NE CO/NW KS LATER TODAY/TONIGHT... PRECEDED BY A
LEE TROUGH.

CLOUDS/LOW LVL OUTFLOW ASSOCIATED WITH OVERNIGHT QLCS LIKELY WILL
HINDER LOW LVL DESTABILIZATION OVER ERN ND AND WRN MN TODAY. MORE
SUBSTANTIAL DESTABILIZATION SHOULD OCCUR FARTHER S OVER SD/NEB
...WHERE STG HEATING AND LOW-MID 60S SFC DEWPOINTS WILL EXIST
BENEATH EML. COMBINATION OF HEATING AND ASCENT ALONG COLD FRONT/
TROUGH SHOULD REMOVE CIN TO SUPPORT TSTM DEVELOPMENT BY MID-LATE
AFTN...WITH A BROKEN BAND OF STORMS LIKELY ALONG THE LENGTH
OF THE FRONT EVE.

ORIENTATION OF FRONT WITH RESPECT TO UPR JET WILL KEEP STRONGER FLOW
ALOFT N AND W OF THE FRONT...ESPECIALLY IN THAT PORTION OF WARM
SECTOR LIKELY TO UNDERGO GREATEST DESTABILIZATION. NEVERTHELESS...
SUFFICIENT...LARGELY UNIDIRECTIONAL DEEP SHEAR SHOULD EXIST FOR
BOWING SEGMENTS AND MARGINAL SUPERCELL STRUCTURES AS SBCAPE
APPROACHES 2000-2500 J/KG. THE PRIMARY SVR THREATS WILL BE ISOLD
DMGG WIND AND HAIL THIS AFTN INTO AT LEAST EARLY TONIGHT.

...SRN KS/NRN OK TODAY THROUGH TONIGHT...
KS MCV APPEARS TO HAVE A WELL-DEFINED PATTERN OF UPR LVL OUTFLOW
ATTM...SUGGESTING THAT IT MIGHT PERSIST IN AT LEAST A WEAKENED STATE
THROUGH THE DAY. COMBINATION OF ENHANCED UPR DIVERGENCE AND RELATED
ASCENT ON PERIPHERY OF MID LVL CIRCULATION LIKELY WILL INFLUENCE
DIURNAL STORM DEVELOPMENT OVER PARTS OF KS AND PERHAPS NRN OK/WRN
MO/NW AR THROUGH THIS EVE. SOME OF THOSE STORMS COULD YIELD ISOLD
DMGG WIND ANDS PERHAPS SVR HAIL GIVEN CONSIDERABLE SBCAPE /2000 J
PER KG/ AND HIGH PW.

CONTINUED EWD ADVANCE OF MT/DAKOTAS IMPULSE...AND NOCTURNAL
DECOUPLING...SHOULD STRENGTHEN/DEEPEN SSWLY LLJ OVER THE CNTRL PLNS
TONIGHT. THIS COULD SUPPORT REGENERATION OF EXISTING MCV...OR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW ONE...RELATIVELY CLOSE PRESENT CIRCULATION.
THUS...COULD SEE ANOTHER ROUND OF HEAVY RAIN AND LOCALLY DMGG WIND
OVER MUCH THE SAME REGION OVERNIGHT.

...W TX...
A FEW STG PULSE STORMS MAY AFFECT PARTS OF W TX TODAY...IN AREA OF
STRONGLY HEATED/MODERATELY MOIST SLY FLOW AHEAD OF FAR W TX UPR
VORT.

...TN/KY/OH/SE INDIANA TODAY...
HEATING ON ERN/SRN FRINGE OF IND UPR LOW AND RELATIVELY COOL MID LVL
TEMPERATURES WILL YIELD AFTN SBCAPE OF 500-1000 J/KG...AND SCTD
DIURNAL TSTMS. WEAK VERTICAL SHEAR MARGINAL INSTABILITY SHOULD
LIMIT SVR RISK.

...NC OUTER BANKS/FAR SE VA...
SVR THREAT APPEARS TO BE DIMINISHING OVER THE NC OUTER BANKS AS SFC
LOW AND ASSOCIATED UPR IMPULSE CONTINUE NNEWD. MOIST AND MODERATELY
SHEARED WARM SECTOR...AND ASSOCIATED CONVECTION WITH THE POTENTIAL
FOR LOW LVL ROTATION...SHOULD THEREFORE REMAIN OFFSHORE THROUGH THE
PERIOD.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 081247
SWODY1
SPC AC 081244

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0744 AM CDT TUE SEP 08 2009

VALID 081300Z - 091200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY
TONIGHT FOR THE CENTRAL AND NRN PLAINS...

...NRN AND CENTRAL PLAINS THROUGH TONIGHT...
A MID LEVEL SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER MT THIS MORNING WILL ROTATE
EWD/NEWD OVER THE DAKOTAS LATER TODAY INTO TONIGHT...AROUND THE SERN
PERIPHERY OF THE LARGER-SCALE CLOSED LOW NOW OVER NRN ALBERTA. THIS
SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL BE PRECEDED BY A SURFACE COLD FRONT THAT WILL
MOVE EWD ACROSS CENTRAL SD AND ERN ND TODAY...AND ERN SD/NW MN LATE
TONIGHT. THE COLD FRONT WILL ALSO PROGRESS SWD ACROSS WRN NEB LATE
TODAY AND NE CO/NW KS TONIGHT.

A LEAD MID LEVEL IMPULSE AND AN ASSOCIATED/WEAKENING THUNDERSTORM
CLUSTER WILL MOVE NEWD OVER NE ND AND NW MN THIS MORNING. THERE IS
SOME CONCERN THAT RESIDUAL CLOUDS WITH THE ONGOING ND STORMS...AS
WELL AS OTHER WAA STORMS OVER NE SD/SE ND...COULD INTERFERE WITH
SURFACE HEATING/DESTABILIZATION TODAY INVOF OF FAR NW MN AND EXTREME
E CENTRAL ND. THE POTENTIAL FOR DESTABILIZATION IS GREATER FARTHER
TO THE S ACROSS SD/NEB WHERE A BELT OF LOW-MID 60S BOUNDARY LAYER
DEWPOINTS IS LOCATED E OF THE COLD FRONT...BENEATH A PLUME OF STEEP
MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES OVER THE PLAINS. DAYTIME HEATING/MIXING AND
LOW-LEVEL ASCENT ALONG THE COLD FRONT WILL REMOVE CONVECTIVE
INHIBITION AND SUPPORT THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT BY MID-LATE
AFTERNOON...WITH A BROKEN BAND OF STORMS EXPECTED ALONG THE LENGTH
OF THE FRONT BY THIS EVENING. THOUGH THE STRONGER DEEP LAYER FLOW
WILL REMAIN LARGELY ON THE COOL SIDE OF THE SURFACE FRONT...THERE
COULD BE A NARROW CORRIDOR ALONG THE FRONT WITH SUFFICIENT VERTICAL
SHEAR FOR BOWING SEGMENTS AND MARGINAL SUPERCELL STRUCTURES...GIVEN
AFTERNOON MLCAPE VALUES AOA 2000 J/KG. THE PRIMARY SEVERE THREATS
WILL BE ISOLATED DAMAGING WINDS AND LARGE HAIL FROM THIS AFTERNOON
INTO AT LEAST EARLY TONIGHT.

...SRN KS/NRN OK TODAY INTO TONIGHT...
A CONVECTIVELY ENHANCED MID LEVEL WAVE OVER CENTRAL KS WILL LIKELY
DRIFT ESEWD TOWARD S CENTRAL KS AND N CENTRAL/NE OK TODAY. ONGOING
CONVECTION WITH THIS SYSTEM IS BEING AUGMENTED BY LOW-LEVEL WAA AND
MOISTURE TRANSPORT ON THE NOSE OF A 35 KT LLJ. SOME WEAKENING OF
THE LLJ IS EXPECTED DURING THE DAY AND THE COVERAGE OF THUNDERSTORMS
WILL LIKELY DECREASE BY ABOUT MIDDAY. HOWEVER...DIFFERENTIAL
HEATING ALONG THE SRN FRINGE OF THE RESIDUAL CONVECTIVE CLUSTER AND
ASSOCIATED OUTFLOW MAY SUPPORT ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT
THIS AFTERNOON INTO NRN OK...WHERE ISOLATED HAIL AND/OR DOWNBURST
WINDS WILL BE POSSIBLE. OVERNIGHT...THE SLY LLJ WILL AGAIN INCREASE
AND MAY ALLOW ELEVATED CONVECTION TO DEVELOP AGAIN IN ROUGHLY THE
SAME CORRIDOR.

...TN/KY/OH/SE INDIANA TODAY...
THE WEAK MID LEVEL LOW NOW CENTERED OVER CENTRAL INDIANA WILL DRIFT
ESEWD TOWARD NE KY THROUGH TONIGHT. DAYTIME HEATING AROUND THE
ERN/SRN FRINGES OF THE MID LEVEL CIRCULATION AND COOLER MID LEVEL
TEMPERATURES WILL RESULT IN AFTERNOON MLCAPE VALUES OF 500-1000
J/KG...AND THE POTENTIAL FOR SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS.
STILL...VERTICAL SHEAR WILL REMAIN WEAK OVER THIS AREA WITH THE
SOMEWHAT MARGINAL INSTABILITY...THUS ANY SEVERE STORM THREAT APPEARS
TOO SMALL TO JUSTIFY AN INTRODUCTION OF WIND OR HAIL PROBABILITIES.

...NC OUTER BANKS TODAY...
THE SURFACE LOW ALONG THE BAROCLINIC ZONE IS LOCATED S OF HAT AS OF
12Z. SHORT TERM MODEL FORECASTS AND EXTRAPOLATION OF OBSERVED DATA
SUGGEST THAT THE LOW WILL PROGRESS SLOWLY NEWD IN CONJUNCTION WITH A
SHORTWAVE TROUGH PIVOTING NEWD AROUND THE WEAK MID LEVEL LOW OVER
THE OH VALLEY. THIS WILL KEEP THE UNSTABLE WARM SECTOR AND FAVORED
ZONE FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT...AND ANY ASSOCIATED RISK FOR
ROTATING STORMS...JUST OFFSHORE.

CONVECTION APPEARS LIKELY ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHERN KS THROUGH THE
EARLY/MID MORNING HOURS...ESPECIALLY ALONG/NORTH OF A WEST-EAST
