MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0629
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0346 PM CDT MON APR 30 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...NERN IA...NW IL...SW WI...SRN MN

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 302046Z - 302145Z

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS CENTRAL AND NORTHERN
IOWA...NORTHWESTERN ILLINOIS...SOUTHWESTERN WISCONSIN...AND SOUTHERN
MINNESOTA LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. STRONG WINDS AND LARGE
HAIL ARE THE PRIMARY EXPECTED THREAT. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
MAY BE NEEDED WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS.

THE AIRMASS OVER CENTRAL AND NORTHERN IOWA CONTINUES TO DESTABILIZE
THIS AFTERNOON IN RESPONSE TO INCREASED SURFACE HEATING...AND SOME
BUILDING CU HAS BEEN NOTED ON VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY OVER
NORTHEAST IOWA...INDICATING THE BEGINNING OF CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT.
STORMS WILL LIKELY FORM IN THIS AREA AND SOUTHEASTWARD...INTO NW
ILLINOIS...ALONG A SLOW-MOVING TO NEAR STATIONARY WARM FRONT THAT
EXTENDS ACROSS THE AREA. STORMS WILL LIKELY BEGIN AS UNORGANIZED
CLUSTERS AND DEVELOP INTO A EAST-NORTHEASTWARD MOVING SQUALL LINE BY
LATER IN THE DAY.

MUCAPE VALUES ARE CURRENTLY AROUND 1500 J/KG AND WILL INCREASE TO
AROUND 2000 J/KG AS SURFACE HEATING CONTINUES...INCREASING THE
CHANCE FOR LARGE HAIL WITH ANY STORMS THAT FORM. FORECAST SOUNDINGS
INDICATE SOME DIRECTIONAL SHEAR ALONG AND JUST AHEAD OF THE WARM
FRONTAL BOUNDARY...SUGGESTING THE POTENTIAL FOR STORM ROTATION...BUT
MOST STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO STAY ELEVATED ABOVE THIS SHALLOW SHEAR
LAYER SO MAINLY MULTICELL STORMS ARE EXPECTED THOUGH SOME STORM
ROTATION MAY BE POSSIBLE WITH A COUPLE OF STORMS.
ADDITIONALLY...GIVEN THE MODERATE TEMPERATURE/DEWPOINT SPREADS NOTED
IN BOTH OBSERVED AND LATEST RUC MODEL FORECAST SOUNDINGS...LOCALIZED
MICROBURSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THE STRONGEST STORMS.

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS MUCH OF SOUTH TEXAS...

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS PARTS OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN
OKLAHOMA...

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS PARTS OF UPPER MISSISSIPPI
VALLEY...

..SYNOPSIS...
PRIMARY BELT OF WESTERLIES FROM PAC NW ACROSS NRN ROCKIES RIDGE THEN
ESEWD ACROSS GREAT LAKES. UPPER LOW CAUGHT IN WEAKER SRN BRANCH
DRIFTING NEWD INTO WRN OK THIS EVENING WHILE UPSTREAM TROUGH
APPROACHES SRN CA BY LATER TONIGHT.

..SRN PLAINS...
ONGOING SEVERE MCS OVER SCENTRAL TX EXPECTED TO INTENSIFY DURING
REMAINDER OF AFTN. PRIMARY SEVERE THREAT WILL BE ALONG LEADING EDGE
OF LARGE COLD AIR OUTFLOW THAT HAS SPREAD S AND SW ACROSS CENTRAL
TX. 20KT OF LOW LEVEL SHEAR COUPLED WITH 40KT OF DEEP LAYER SHEAR
WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR NOT ONLY MULTICELLULAR SEVERE BUT ALSO
ISOLATED SUPERCELLS GIVEN MLCAPES AOA 2000 J/KG IN THE WARM SECTOR.
BRIEF TORNADOS WILL BE POSSIBLE THRU THE EVENING ASSOCIATED WITH ANY
SUPERCELL THAT DEVELOPS VICINITY OF THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES.

A PLUME OF HIGHER MID/UPR 60 DEWPOINTS AND INSTABILITY HAVE SPREAD
NWD THRU ERN OK AHEAD OF A WEAK MID LEVEL VORT MAX TO THE SW OF OKC.
WHILE SHEAR OF 20-30KT IS MARGINAL FOR SEVERE...MLCAPES AOA 2000
J/KG ALONG AND E OF N/S SURFACE BOUNDARY TO THE E OF OKC WILL BE
SUFFICIENT FOR A FEW MULTICELLULAR SEVERE EVENTS. PRIMARY THREAT OF
LARGE HAIL AND WET MICRO BURSTS WILL DIMINISH TOWARD SUNSET.

..UPPER MS VALLEY...
THE ELEVATED THUNDERSTORMS DURING THE MORNING TO THE N OF FRONTAL
BAND EXTENDING FROM SURFACE LOW SERN SD EWD TO SRN WI WILL GRADUALLY
BECOME NEAR SURFACE BASED DURING THE AFTERNOON. STRONG SURFACE
HEATING ACROSS IA TO S OF FRONTAL ZONE WITH TEMPERATURES TO NEAR 90F
HAVE GENERATED STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND MLCAPES UP TO 1000
J/KG IN WARM SECTOR. POTENTIAL FOR HAIL AND DOWNBURSTS WINDS WILL
INCREASE ALONG AND JUST TO S OF FRONTAL ZONE EWD ACROSS SRN MN/NERN
IA AND INTO SRN WI. MARGINAL DEEP LAYER SHEAR SHOULD LIMIT THE
EXTENT OF SEVERE THAT WILL DEVELOP...ALTHOUGH THREAT WILL LIKELY
CONTINUE AFTER DARK TOWARD LM.

..NERN CO...
STEEP LAPSE RATES OF 9C/KM AND CONVERGENCE ALONG FRONTAL ZONE
SETTLING SEWD INTO NERN CO...WILL BE SUFFICIENT WITH THE RATHER
LIMITED MOISTURE FOR A FEW STRONG/SEVERE STORMS THIS AFTERNOON.
ALTHOUGH MLCAPES GENERALLY LESS THAN 1000 J/KG...HIGH BASES AND
STEEP LAPSE RATES SUPPORT BOTH HAIL AND ISOLATED DOWNBURSTS FROM THE
HIGH BASED STORMS.

SPC AC 301233

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0733 AM CDT MON APR 30 2007

VALID 301300Z - 011200Z

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PORTIONS OF TX...

..THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS A SMALL PART OF THE NRN
MS RIVER VALLEY...

..CENTRAL/SRN TX...
MID/UPPER LOW CENTERED OVER SERN NM EARLY THIS MORNING WILL CONTINUE
MOVING SLOWLY ENEWD ACROSS THE WEST TX PLAINS AND INTO OK THROUGH
THE PERIOD. THIS SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE TO FOCUS NUMEROUS
THUNDERSTORMS IN THE FORM OF ONE OR MORE CONVECTIVE SYSTEMS THROUGH
THE PERIOD ACROSS THIS REGION. MCS WHICH WEAKENED AS IT MOVED INTO
GREATER STABILITY ACROSS CENTRAL TX PRIOR TO 10Z REINFORCED A
SURFACE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY...WITH TAIL END OF THIS BOUNDARY EXTENDING
ROUGHLY WSWWD BETWEEN SAT AND COT TO JUST SOUTH OF DRT AT 12Z. DEEP
ASCENT AND INFLUX OF STEEP MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES /EVIDENCED ON
EXTENSIVE DRY INTRUSION ON WV IMAGERY/ CONTINUES TO SUPPORT ELEVATED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT JUST NORTH OF THIS BOUNDARY FROM THE BIG
BEND REGION INTO THE HILL COUNTRY THIS MORNING. DEEP LAYER SHEAR
REMAINS SUPPORTIVE OF SUPERCELLS...INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR
LARGE HAIL...AS AREA REMAINS FED WITH RICH BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE
IN PLACE OVER DEEP SOUTH TX.

SURFACE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WILL LIKELY BECOME FOCUS OF MORE INTENSE
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT TODAY. APPEARS WARM SECTOR WILL BECOME
VERY UNSTABLE AS MAJORITY OF MORNING CLOUDS/PRECIPITATION ADVECT
NNEWD OVER COLD SIDE OF THE FORNT. MLCAPE EXCEEDING 2000 J/KG IS
EXPECTED BY THE MID AFTERNOON OVER SOUTH TX WHERE 30-40 KT MID LEVEL
WLYS WILL ENHANCE DEEP LAYER SHEAR. OVERALL PATTERN WILL BECOME
FAVORABLE FOR LONGER-LIVED SUPERCELLS IF STORMS DEVELOP NEAR THE
HIGHER TERRAIN WEST OF THE RIO GRANDE OR OVER SRN TX...AND TRACK
SLOWLY EWD ALONG THIS FRONT TODAY. IN ADDITION TO LARGE HAIL AND
DAMAGING WINDS...THE THREAT OF TORNADOES WILL ALSO ACCOMPANY THIS
ACTIVITY.

SEVERE THREAT WILL BE A BIT MORE DIFFICULT TO DISCERN FARTHER NORTH
INTO CENTRAL TX...WITH THREAT DEPENDING UPON PROPER
CLEARING/DESTABILIZATION IN WAKE OF EARLIER STORMS. MID LEVEL LAPSE
RATES AND MODEST SHEAR WOULD SUPPORT AT LEAST A LARGE HAIL THREAT
FOR MUCH OF THE PERIOD WITH STRONGER STORMS. AN AREA OF STRONGER
STORMS MIGHT DEVELOP INTO WRN TX/FAR SWRN OK NEARER THE MID/UPPER
LOW AND ASSOCIATED -14C TO -16C MID LEVEL COLD POCKET...WHERE DRY
SLOT MAY BOOST HEATING LATER TODAY. LARGE HAIL WOULD BE PRIMARY
THREAT WITH THIS ACTIVITY.

..NRN MS RIVER VALLEY...
SURFACE LOW IS FORECAST TO DEEPEN AS IT MOVES ACROSS SRN MN TODAY IN
RESPONSE OF FAST MOVING SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVING RAPIDLY OVER THE NRN
PLAINS THIS MORNING. A WARM FRONT WILL BECOME BETTER DEFINED
EXTENDING EWD FROM THE LOW CENTER INTO THE TRI-STATE AREA OF
IA/WI/MN...WHICH WILL THEN EXTEND SEWD INTO NERN IND. MODELS HAVE
BEEN CONSISTENT IN DEVELOPING A SMALL AREA OF 60+ SURFACE DEW POINTS
JUST AHEAD OF THE SURFACE LOW...WHICH FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE
WILL BOOST MLCAPE TO NEAR 1500 J/KG AND WEAKEN CINH. APPEARS
SUFFICIENT CONVERGENCE WILL DEVELOP BETWEEN 21Z-00Z FOR THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT NEAR THE TRI-STATE REGION...WITH ACTIVITY DEVELOPING
SEWD THROUGH THE EVENING. EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR FROM 35-40 KT WILL
LIKELY SUPPORT A SUPERCELL OR TWO WITH STRONG LOW LEVEL SHEAR
INDICATING A THREAT OF TORNADOES WITH ANY SUSTAINED SUPERCELL NEAR
THE FRONT THROUGH THE EARLY EVENING.

..CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...
OVERNIGHT MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP
ALONG WRN END OF THE SURFACE FRONT MOVING ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS
TODAY. THIS ACTIVITY WILL LIKELY FORM WITHIN UPSLOPE FLOW INTO
CENTRAL/SERN WY AND OVERSPREAD A MARGINALLY UNSTABLE AIR MASS OVER
THE HIGH PLAINS THIS EVENING. IN ADDITION TO HAIL...DEEPLY MIXED
BOUNDARY LAYER MAY SUPPORT STRONG GUSTS. DEEP MIXING AND
CONVERGENCE MAY ALSO AID IN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT ALONG
THE FRONT ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS.

..DISCUSSION...

PATTERN BECOMES INTERESTING AS ECMWF/GFS ARE FALLING IN LINE WITH
EACH OTHER. THE GFS IS SLOWER THAN THE ECMWF/UKMET WITH THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE WRN U.S. THE
ECMWF/UKMET FORM A LOWER LATITUDE TROF OVER THE GREAT BASIN WHILE
THE GFS IS STILL OVER THE NWRN U.S. BEFORE DEEPENING THE VORTEX INTO
THE CENTRAL INTERMOUNTAIN REGION BY FRIDAY AFTN MAY 4TH. THE MAIN
MESSAGE SEEMS TO BE THAT THIS WILL ENHANCE RETURN FLOW OF GULF
MOISTURE NWD INTO THE PLAINS STATES ON MAY 3 AND 4 AND
RE-ESTABLISHING THE DRYLINE ALONG THE CAP ROCK ESCARPMENT OF W TX.
IT LOOKS LIKE MAIN MID/UPPER LEVEL JET AXIS WILL THEN TURN
CYCLONICALLY OVER THE SRN ROCKIES INTO THE CENTRAL/SRN HIGH PLAINS.

DEPENDING ON THE TIMING OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL TROUGH COMING OUT AND
IF A SECONDARY TROUGH DEVELOPS AS PER THE GFS...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
COULD OCCUR ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS DURING THE MAY
4-6 TIME FRAME.

DAY 3 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0231 AM CDT MON APR 30 2007

VALID 021200Z - 031200Z

..NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

..SYNOPSIS...
TRANSITION IN THE PATTERN CONTINUES DURING THE PERIOD INTO A LARGE
TROUGH OVER MUCH OF THE WRN U.S. WITH MID LEVEL RIDGING THRU THE MS
VALLEY AND A TROUGH MOVING EWD ACROSS THE NERN U.S. LARGE TROUGH
OVER THE WEST WILL MOVE MID/UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE IN THE SRN BRANCH
NEWD INTO THE CENTRAL AND SRN PLAINS.

..ERN MT INTO NERN WY AND THE WRN DAKOTAS...

EMBEDDED SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL BE MOVING NEWD THRU THE REGION ON
WEDNESDAY. BOTH MODELS ENHANCE LOW LEVEL FLOW WITH A 40-60 KT LOW
LEVEL JET NWD THROUGH THE NRN PLAINS. IN ADDITION...MAIN TROUGH
OVER THE WEST WILL HAVE EXIT REGION OF 60-70 MID LEVEL JET/110-120
KT UPPER LEVEL JET INTO THE CENTRAL INTERMOUNTAIN REGION. THIS WILL
BE COUPLED ENOUGH FOR A FEW ISOLATED STRONG/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
ALONG COLD FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT WILL EXTEND FROM A LOW OVER
CENTRAL/ERN MT SWWD INTO SERN UT WITH LIFTED INDICES BETWEEN -4 AND
-6 IN THE WARM SECTOR.

..CENTRAL/SRN HIGH PLAINS...

NEXT MID/UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE WILL BE EJECTED NEWD OVER THE REGION
DURING THE PERIOD. RESIDUAL MOISTURE WILL BE ACROSS THIS REGION
FROM PREVIOUS MID/UPPER TROUGH. COMBINATION OF DPVA/MID/UPPER
DIFFLUENT FLOW WILL PROVIDE SUFFICIENT UPWARD ASCENT ACROSS THE
REGION FOR WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORMS. BOTH NAM/GFS PROVIDE MODERATE
INSTABILITY WITH GFS BEING A BIT MORE AGGRESSIVE WITH LIS NEAR -8.
GIVEN THAT DAYTIME HEATING WILL NEED TO DESTABILIZE AIR MASS...SOME
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THIS REGION ON WEDNESDAY.

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS SW TX...RIO GRANDE VALLEY.

CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 200...

VALID 300710Z - 300845Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 200 CONTINUES.

SVR POTENTIAL EXPECTED TO PERSIST BEYOND SCHEDULED 8Z WW EXPIRATION
TIME...THEREFORE OPTIONS INCLUDE LOCAL EXTENSION OF WW IN TIME OR
REPLACEMENT WW.

BAND OF STG-SVR TSTMS IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE MOVING EWD ACROSS SRN
HILL COUNTRY AND RIO GRANDE PLAINS AREA BETWEEN JCT-COT. NRN
PORTION OF THIS LINE N DRT APPEARS OUTFLOW-DOMINANT...AND SHOULD
CONTINUE TO BE DRIVEN BY SUBSTANTIAL COLD POOL EVIDENT IN SFC
MESOANALYSIS ACROSS W-CENTRAL TX. SOMEWHAT MORE
DISCRETE/SUPERCELLULAR MORPHOLOGIES WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE FROM DRT
AREA SWD -- INCLUDING POTENTIALLY SVR TSTMS OVER NRN COAHUILA AT 7Z
THAT SHOULD MOVE ACROSS RIO GRANDE AND DRT AREA AROUND 730Z.
ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS EVIDENT FROM THAT ACTIVITY SSWWD INTO
PIEDMONT/FOOTHILLS REGION OF SERRANIAS DEL BURRO RANGE ABOUT 60 NM W
EAGLE PASS. DAMAGING HAIL/GUSTS ARE MAIN THREAT...ALTHOUGH
POTENTIAL FOR TORNADOES STILL MAY PERSIST FOR ANOTHER COUPLE HOURS.

VERY FAVORABLE LOW LEVEL SHEAR PROFILES INDICATED AT DRT BASED ON
VWP...WITH 50 KT LLJ CONTRIBUTING TO 0-1 KM SRH AROUND 330
J/KG...WITH MLCAPES IN 1000-1500 J/KG RANGE ACROSS PROSPECTIVE STORM
INFLOW REGION W-S OF SAT. SBCINH WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE
SUBSTANTIALLY E OF ABOUT I-35...BASED ON MODIFIED RAOBS AND RUC FCST
SOUNDINGS. THESE FACTORS INDICATING SVR POTENTIAL DIMINISHES
SIGNIFICANTLY E OF LONGITUDE OF SAT.

ACTIVITY FARTHER NW ACROSS PORTIONS PECOS/CROCKETT/UPTON COUNTIES
MAY PRODUCE OCCASIONAL HAIL...ATOP COLD/STABLE SFC OUTFLOW LAYER
LEFT BEHIND BY EARLIER CONVECTION...HOWEVER TORNADO POTENTIAL
APPEARS MINIMAL ATTM.
