AREAS AFFECTED...WESTERN/SOUTHERN/CENTRAL OK AND NORTH-CENTRAL TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 211739Z - 211945Z

LOW-TOPPED TSTMS CAPABLE OF HAIL TO SEVERE LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP/INCREASE THROUGH EARLY/MID AFTERNOON ESPECIALLY ACROSS
WESTERN/CENTRAL/SOUTHERN OF OK AS WELL AS NORTH-CENTRAL TX. HAIL
ASIDE...A FEW FUNNELS/BRIEF TORNADO MAY BE POSSIBLE AS WELL. A WATCH
COULD BE NEEDED THIS AFTERNOON.

A NEARLY VERTICALLY STACKED/CLOSED LOW CONTINUES TO SLOWLY SHIFT
EASTWARD ACROSS NORTH-CENTRAL TX/SOUTHWEST OK EARLY THIS AFTERNOON.
TIED TO THIS CYCLONE...REGIONAL 12Z OBSERVED SOUNDINGS AND MORE
CONTEMPORARY RUC DIAGNOSTICS SUGGEST MID-LEVEL /500 MB/ TEMPERATURES
MAY BE AS COLD AS -25 TO -27 C. WITH AMPLE INSOLATION...LITTLE
NEAR-SURFACE INHIBITION NOW REMAINS AS SURFACE TEMPERATURES HAVE
WARMED INTO THE UPPER 50S/LOWER 60S F IN MOST AREAS AS OF 17Z. WHILE
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE WILL REMAIN RATHER MODEST /AND PERHAPS MIX-OUT TO
A DEGREE LATER THIS AFTERNOON/...VERY STEEP LAPSE RATES/COOL THERMAL
PROFILES ALOFT SHOULD BE EFFICIENT IN PRODUCING HAIL THIS
AFTERNOON...SOME OF IT TO/ABOVE SEVERE LEVELS. THE STEEP LAPSE RATES
AND A VORTICITY-RICH ENVIRONMENT IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE STACKED
LOW COULD ALSO YIELD FUNNELS/PERHAPS A BRIEF TORNADO AS WELL...EVEN
WITH MODEST VERTICAL SHEAR.

SPC AC 211727

DAY 2 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1227 PM CDT WED MAR 21 2012

VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...NO SVR TSTM AREAS FORECAST...

...CNTRL GULF COAST...
A WELL-DEVELOPED UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE SRN AND CNTRL PLAINS
THURSDAY MORNING WILL MOVE SLOWLY EWD DURING THE DAY. ON THE ERN
SIDE OF THE UPPER-LEVEL SYSTEM...A WELL-DEFINED BAND OF LARGE-SCALE
ASCENT SHOULD EXIST ACROSS THE LOWER MS VALLEY WITH A 30 TO 40 KT
LOW-LEVEL JET LOCATED FURTHER TO THE EAST IN THE CNTRL GULF COAST
STATES. A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS SHOULD BE ONGOING ALONG THE AXIS OF
THE LOW-LEVEL JET WITH THIS ACTIVITY MOVING VERY SLOWLY EWD OR
REMAINING NEARLY STATIONARY DURING THE DAY. AN AXIS OF INSTABILITY
IS FORECAST TO THE EAST OF THE CONVECTIVE LINE WHERE FORECAST
SOUNDINGS DEVELOP MODERATE INSTABILITY BY AFTERNOON. BY 18 TO
21Z...THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE CHARACTERIZED WITH MLCAPE AROUND
1000 J/KG...850 MB FLOW OF 25 TO 35 KT AND 0-6 KM SHEAR OF 30 TO 40
KT. THIS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR AN ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE THREAT
ESPECIALLY AS SFC TEMPS WARM AROUND MIDDAY HELPING LOW-LEVEL LAPSE
RATES TO STEEPEN. THE LOW-LEVEL SHEAR MAY ALSO SUPPORT A FEW
ROTATING STORMS BUT THE STRONGER LARGE-SCALE ASCENT IS FORECAST TO
REMAIN FURTHER WEST AND LOW-LEVEL FLOW MAY WEAKEN SOME THURSDAY
AFTERNOON KEEPING ANY SEVERE THREAT MARGINAL.

...NE OK/SE KS/SW MO/NW AR...
AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE SRN AND CNTRL PLAINS WILL MOVE SLOWLY
EWD ON THURSDAY. AS SFC TEMPS WARM DURING THE DAY...MODEL FORECASTS
INITIATE SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ON THE ERN SIDE OF THE UPPER-LEVEL
LOW WHERE STRONG LARGE-SCALE ASCENT SHOULD EXIST. COLD TEMPS ALOFT
AND STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW
SHOULD SUPPORT A MARGINAL HAIL THREAT WITH THE STRONGER CORES. THE
MODELS ALSO MOVE A 30 TO 40 KT LOW-LEVEL JET NWD INTO ERN OK AND SE
KS DURING THE AFTERNOON SUGGESTING BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW WILL
STRENGTHEN SOME. THIS ALONG WITH STEEP LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES MAY
ALSO SUPPORT A MARGINAL WIND DAMAGE THREAT ESPECIALLY AS CONVECTIVE
COVERAGE INCREASES DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING.

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN WV...SWRN AND CNTRL VA...MUCH OF NC

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 211722Z - 211915Z

STORMS WILL INCREASE IN COVERAGE OVER THE NEXT 1-2 HOURS. THE MAIN
THREAT WILL BE MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL AND LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS. THE
LACK OF STORM ORGANIZATION AND EXPECTED PULSE-TYPE NATURE OF
CONVECTION WILL PRECLUDE THE ISSUANCE OF A WW AT THIS TIME.

CUMULUS WERE DEVELOPING ALONG HIGHER TERRAIN FROM SE WV SWD INTO
NWRN NC WHERE CLEAR SKIES HAVE ALLOWED MAXIMUM SFC HEATING THROUGH
EARLY AFTERNOON. FURTHER E...MORE SPORADIC DEVELOPMENT OF CU WAS
EVIDENT ON LATEST VIS SATELLITE IMAGERY DUE TO EARLY MORNING
CLOUDINESS. HOWEVER...THE AIR MASS ACROSS CNTRL VA AND NC WAS
SHOWING SIGNS OF DESTABILIZATION AS WELL. ALONG THE HIGHER TERRAIN
SBCAPE VALUES WERE APPROACHING 1000 J/KG AND EXPECT CNTRL PORTIONS
OF THE MCD AREA TO RECOVER QUICKLY WITH ADDITIONAL HEATING. BY
MID-AFTERNOON SBCAPE AROUND 1000 J/KG COMBINED WITH MIDLEVEL LAPSE
RATES APPROACHING 7 DEG C/KM WILL ALLOW FOR STRONG UPDRAFTS AND WITH
COLD TEMPERATURES ALOFT /-14 TO -16 C AT 500 MB PER 12Z
RAOBS/...MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE. HOWEVER...VERY
WEAK DEEP LAYER SHEAR /LESS THAN 10-15 KT BULK SHEAR/ AND LITTLE
UPPER LEVEL SUPPORT FOR ASCENT WILL LIMIT STORM ORGANIZATION AND
STRONG UPDRAFTS WILL BE SHORT-LIVED. THEREFORE...SUB-SEVERE HAIL IS
EXPECTED TO BE MORE PREVALENT WITH SHORTER DURATION PERIODS OF NEAR
SEVERE HAIL POSSIBLE.

DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 211625
SWODY1
SPC AC 211623

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1123 AM CDT WED MAR 21 2012

VALID 211630Z - 221200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER THE LOWER MS VALLEY...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM CENTRAL OK INTO N CENTRAL
TX...

...LOWER MS VALLEY...
BAND OF STRONG/SEVERE STORMS FROM EXTREME NERN LA ACROSS SWRN MS AND
SERN LA IS EXPECTED TO TRANSLATE SLOWLY EWD THIS AFTERNOON ON THE
ERN PERIPHERY OF THE UPPER LOW OVER NWRN TX. STORMS WILL REMAIN
WITHIN A WELL-DEFINED NARROW MOISTURE AXIS WITHIN A LOW LEVEL
CONFLUENT ZONE. STRONGEST DIURNAL HEATING WILL LIKELY OCCUR FROM
EXTREME SERN LA INTO SERN/EAST CENTRAL MS WHERE VISIBLE IMAGERY
EXHIBITS THINNING CLOUD COVER. VAD WIND PROFILES FROM KLIX AND
SHORT-TERM MODEL GUIDANCE INDICATE 40-50 KT WINDS THAT VEER WITH
HEIGHT IN THE LOWEST 2 KM OVER THE REGION. WHEN COUPLED WITH 40-50
KT DEEP LAYER SHEAR...THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE A FAVORABLE
KINEMATIC ENVIRONMENT FOR SEVERE STORMS INCLUDING EMBEDDED
SUPERCELLS AND OCCASIONAL SHORT BOWING LINE SEGMENTS. A THREAT FOR
DAMAGING WINDS AND A FEW TORNADOES WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON HOURS AS THE CONVECTIVE BAND PROGRESSES FROM LA INTO MS.

...CENTRAL OK INTO N CENTRAL TX...
COMPACT UPPER LOW CIRCULATION OVER NWRN TX IS ASSOCIATED WITH VERY
COLD MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES /MINUS 25-27C AT 500 MB/. SATELLITE
IMAGERY SHOWS THIS SYSTEM MOVING VERY SLOWLY EWD...WITH WELL-DEFINED
VORTICITY MAX NEAR BWD CURRENTLY MOVING EWD. GENERALLY CLEAR SKIES
WILL ALLOW STRONG HEATING TO OCCUR THIS AFTERNOON AND WHEN COMBINED
WITH COOLING ALOFT...RESULT IN STEEPENING LOW-MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES
AND DESTABILIZATION WITH CAPE OF 500-1000 J/KG DEVELOPING.

CONVECTION IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AS THE CAP
WEAKENS...WITH LOW-TOPPED THUNDERSTORMS FORMING NEAR/AHEAD OF THE
UPPER LOW WITHIN A WEAKLY CONVERGENT REGION ASSOCIATED WITH A BROAD
SURFACE LOW. THE STEEP LAPSE RATES WILL PROMOTE STRONG UPDRAFT
DEVELOPMENT WITH POTENTIAL FOR MORE INTENSE CELLS TO PRODUCE SEVERE
HAIL. IN ADDITION...FUNNEL CLOUDS AND A BRIEF TORNADO WILL ALSO BE
POSSIBLE.

...VA INTO NC REGION...
SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS THE UPPER LOW/VORTICITY MAX OVER NRN VA
MOVING SWD. COLDER MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES /-16C AT 500 MB/ ARE
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FEATURE AND WILL CONTRIBUTE TO STEEPENING MID
LEVEL LAPSE RATES ACROSS PARTS OF ERN VA INTO NERN NC THIS
AFTERNOON. VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWS CLOUDS THINNING FROM SRN VA INTO
PARTS OF NRN NC WHERE STRONGER DIURNAL HEATING WILL OCCUR...AND THIS
WILL ENHANCE LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES AS WELL. AS THE CAP WEAKENS THIS
AFTERNOON CONVECTION WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE AREA...ALTHOUGH WEAK
WINDS ALOFT AND MINIMAL VERTICAL SHEAR WILL NOT BE CONDUCIVE FOR
PERSISTENT ORGANIZED STORM STRUCTURES. NEVERTHELESS...FAVORABLE
LAPSE RATES SUGGEST POTENTIAL FOR STRONGER STORMS TO PRODUCE
MARGINALLY SEVERE HAIL INTO THE EARLY EVENING.
