DAY1SVR: Day 1 Convective Outlook

ACUS01 KWNS 170032
SWODY1
SPC AC 170030

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0730 PM CDT MON AUG 16 2010

VALID 170100Z - 171200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGH
PLAINS...

...CENTRAL PLAINS...

SEVERAL CLUSTERS OF STRONG TO MARGINALLY SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE
EVOLVED ACROSS THE CNTRL HIGH PLAINS INTO THE CNTRL ROCKIES ALONG
THE WY/CO BORDER. THIS ACTIVITY IS AIDED IN LARGE PART BY A FAIRLY
PRONOUNCED SHORTWAVE TROUGH WITH A VORT CENTER LOCATED NEAR EVW IN
SWRN WY. WITH EWD PROGRESSION OF THIS FEATURE IT APPEARS LARGE
SCALE ASCENT WILL OVERSPREAD THE CNTRL PLAINS AFTER DARK AND THIS
SHOULD ENCOURAGE ONGOING ACTIVITY TO SPREAD ESEWD ACROSS SRN NEB
INTO PARTS OF KS. ADDITIONALLY...LLJ IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY
INCREASE OVER NIGHT ACROSS NCNTRL OK/CNTRL KS WHICH SHOULD ENHANCE
CONVECTIVE THREAT INTO THIS PART OF THE PLAINS. EVEN
SO...INSTABILITY IS NOT PARTICULARLY STRONG AND THE SEVERE THREAT
WILL REMAIN LOCALIZED THIS EVENING...CONTAINED PRIMARILY TO THE HIGH
PLAINS.

...DELMARVA TO NEW ENGLAND...

A SMALL CLUSTER OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS CURRENTLY LINGER ALONG THE
PA/MD BORDER...SHIFTING EAST AHEAD OF WEAK FRONTAL ZONE. AHEAD OF
THIS ACTIVITY...A NARROW AXIS OF INSTABILITY HAS YET TO BE
OVERTURNED FROM NRN VA INTO SRN NEW ENGLAND WHERE MLCAPE VALUES
CURRENTLY EXCEED 1500 J/KG. AFOREMENTIONED CONVECTION IS LIKELY
PRODUCING SMALL HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS BUT OVERALL TRENDS ARE DOWN
ACROSS THE REGION WITH ONSET OF DIURNAL COOLING. FOR THIS REASON
WILL ONLY MAINTAIN 5% PROBABILITIES FOR ISOLATED SEVERE WINDS WITH
THE STRONGEST UPDRAFTS FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS.

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 619...

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 619
CONTINUES.

UPPER IMPULSE OBSERVED IN WV IMAGERY IS MOVING EWD ACROSS PA AT
23Z...AND IS MAXIMIZING LARGE SCALE ASCENT ACROSS THE REGION. THIS
FEATURE APPEARS TO BE FOCUSING ISOLATED TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM
DEVELOPMENT EMANATING OFF OF A COLD FRONT THAT EXTENDS SWD FROM 25
WNW OF GFL TO AVP TO HGR. LOW-LEVEL THERMAL AXIS RESIDES ALONG THE
FRONT OVER CNTRL/ERN PA...CHARACTERIZED BY TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S F
AND MLCAPE VALUES RANGING FROM 1500-2500 J/KG /BASED ON OBJECTIVE
ANALYSIS GUIDANCE/...WHILE A MORE MOIST BUT COOLER AIR MASS EXISTS
TO THE E OVER PORTIONS OF SERN NY/NRN NJ/CT/MA. REGIONAL RADAR
IMAGERY INDICATES THAT AS STORMS MOVE OFF OF THE FRONT AND TOWARD
THE COOLER DOWNSTREAM ENVIRONMENT...WEAKENING TREND IN STORM
INTENSITY HAS BEEN OBSERVED. WITH LOSS OF DAYTIME HEATING...THIS
TREND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE INTO THE EVENING AS BOUNDARY LAYER
FURTHER STABILIZES. IN ADDITION...STRONGER ASCENT AHEAD OF
APPROACHING IMPULSE IS EXPECTED TO EXIT THE REGION WITH TIME. GIVEN
THESE FACTORS...WW 619 WILL LIKELY BE ALLOWED TO EXPIRE AT
01Z...WITH ADDITIONAL WATCHES UNLIKELY.

AREAS AFFECTED...NEB AND NWRN KS

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 621...

VALID 162232Z - 162300Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 621
CONTINUES.

NEW WW IS BEING CONSIDERED FOR PART OF WRN/CENTRAL NEB INTO NWRN
KS...TO THE EAST OF WW 622. MEANWHILE...THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT
FARTHER E ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND ERN EXTENT OF WW 621 SHOULD REMAIN
RATHER LIMITED OR NON-EXISTENT INTO THE EVENING.

...WW 621...
LATE AFTERNOON SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWED AN E-W BOUNDARY EXTENDING
FROM THE NRN PART OF NEB PANHANDLE EWD INTO NORTH CENTRAL NEB...
WHILE THE ERN EXTENT OF THIS BOUNDARY IS REINFORCED WITH A MORE SWD
PUSH BY A CONVECTIVE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ATTENDANT TO LEAD TSTM OVER
NERN NEB. WEAK INSTABILITY WITH EWD EXTENT INTO ERN NEB AND RAIN
SHIELD OVER CENTRAL PART OF WW 621 NORTH OF TSTM CLUSTER OVER
CENTRAL NEB ARE EXPECTED TO LIMIT ADDITIONAL SEVERE WEATHER THREAT
ACROSS MUCH OF THE CENTRAL/ERN EXTENT OF THIS WW...WITH LOCAL WFO
COUNTY CANCELLATIONS LIKELY.

...POTENTIAL NEW WW...
REGIONAL RADAR IMAGERY SHOWED AN ORGANIZED TSTM LINE ALONG SWRN
FLANK OF CENTRAL NEB TSTM CLUSTER WITH A SEWD MOVEMENT AT 30 KT.
THIS LINE WAS LOCATED ALONG THE ERN EXTENT OF STRONGER INSTABILITY
OVER THE HIGH PLAINS AND WITH A MIDLEVEL IMPULSE LIKELY PROVIDING
SUFFICIENT UVVS FOR THIS TSTM CLUSTER TO BE MAINTAINED INTO THE
EARLY EVENING. UNCERTAINTY REMAINS WITH HOW SEVERE THIS LINE CAN
BECOME AS IT MOVES AWAY FROM STRONGER INSTABILITY. HOWEVER...
