MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2238
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0729 AM CST SUN DEC 16 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...NORTHEAST NY/VT/NH/MA/WESTERN MAINE

CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

VALID 161329Z - 161830Z

MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL SPREAD ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHERN VT/NH
INTO WESTERN MAINE THIS MORNING...WITH SNOW GRADUALLY TAPERING ALONG
WITH A PRECIP-TYPE TRANSITION TO MAINLY SLEET ACROSS EASTERN NY INTO
MA AND ADJACENT PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN VT/NH.

WATER VAPOR IMAGERY AND UPPER AIR/SURFACE DIAGNOSTICS FEATURE A
CONTINUALLY DEEPENING CYCLONE ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY...WITH A
SECONDARY SURFACE LOW ALSO CONTINUING TO DEEPEN ALONG THE MID
ATLANTIC COAST WITHIN AN EXISTING LOW LEVEL BAROCLINIC ZONE. SIMILAR
TO EARLY MORNING TRENDS ACROSS NORTHERN/EASTERN NY AND MA...MODERATE
TO HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS NORTHERN
PORTIONS OF VT/NH INTO WESTERN MAINE THROUGH 15Z-18Z. AS 09Z RUC
SOUNDINGS AND THE 12Z GRAY MAINE OBSERVED RAOB IMPLY...AMPLE OMEGA
THROUGH A SATURATED DENDRITIC LAYER WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT A
NORTHEASTWARD SPREAD OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW THIS MORNING...WITH
THE POSSIBILITY OF 1 IN/HR SNOW RATES.

FARTHER SOUTHWEST ACROSS PORTIONS OF EASTERN NY AND MA INTO SOUTHERN
PORTIONS OF VT/NH...WITH MID LEVEL WARMING/APPROACHING DRY
SLOT...SNOW IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY TAPER WITH A TRANSITION TO
SLEET /AND PERHAPS SOME FREEZING RAIN OR DRIZZLE/ THIS MORNING. THE
12Z ALBANY OBSERVED RAOB FEATURES CONSIDERABLE MID LEVEL WARMING
SINCE LAST EVENING /00Z/...WITH A JUST-ABOVE FREEZING LAYER ALREADY
NOTED AT 12Z AROUND 800 MB...INCREASINGLY FAVORABLE FOR PARTIAL
MELTING/SLEET WITHIN THIS CORRIDOR.
