MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0132
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1040 PM CST SAT FEB 02 2008

AREAS AFFECTED...SIERRA NEVADA MTNS ABOVE 4000 FT

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 030440Z - 031045Z

HEAVY SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD THE SIERRA NEVADA MTNS ABOVE 4000 FT
THROUGH THE NEXT 6 HOURS. HRLY RATES FROM 2-3 INCHES WILL BE
POSSIBLE BETWEEN 06-12Z...ESPECIALLY OVER THE CENTRAL/SRN SIERRA
NEVADA.

LATEST WV/IR SAT IMAGERY SHOWS A STRONG UPPER JET DIGGING SEWD OFF
THE NRN CA COAST. STRONG UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE IN THE LEFT EXIT
REGION OF THIS JET COMBINED WITH STRONG LOW LEVEL WAA /NOTED ON
REGIONAL VWP DATA/ HAS SUPPORTED A RAPID INCREASE IN PRECIPITATION
DEVELOPMENT OVER THE LAST HOUR ACROSS MUCH OF THE NRN AND CENTRAL CA
COAST/INTERIOR VALLEYS. THIS PRECIPITATION WILL SPREAD QUICKLY EWD
INTO THE SIERRA NEVADA OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. STRONG UPSLOPE FLOW
/SWLY WINDS AROUND 50 KTS BETWEEN 1-2 KM/ COMBINED WITH THE
AFOREMENTIONED STRONG UVM WILL SUPPORT HEAVY SNOW FALL RATES IN
EXCESS OF 2 IN/HR /ESPECIALLY ALONG THE WRN SLOPES OF THE CENTRAL
AND SRN SIERRA NEVADA/. RECENT RAWS DATA INDICATED THAT THE SNOW
LEVEL WAS AROUND 3000 FT. HOWEVER...GIVEN THE STRENGTH OF THE
WAA...SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO RISE TO AROUND 4000 FT OVER THE
NEXT FEW HOURS. SSWLY WINDS FROM 25-30 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS WILL
PRODUCE NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AT TIMES IN THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS/PASSES.
