NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
455 PM CDT THU APR 9 2009

THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF

SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS

EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 455 PM UNTIL
800 PM CDT.

TORNADOES...HAIL TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND
GUSTS TO 60 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE
AREAS.

THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 30 STATUTE
MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 45 MILES NORTHWEST OF
MEDICINE LODGE KANSAS TO 35 MILES EAST OF WICHITA KANSAS. FOR A

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

DISCUSSION...ADDITIONAL STORM DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED ALONG THE HWY
54 CORRIDOR ACROSS SRN KS AS THE DRY SURGE FROM OK COLLIDES WITH THE
E-W FRONT IN KS...NEAR AND E OF THE SURFACE AND MID LEVEL LOW
CENTER. THOUGH LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE IS MARGINAL...STEEP LAPSE RATES
AND STRONG VERTICAL VORTICITY ALONG THE BOUNDARY COULD SUPPORT A
COUPLE OF SPIN-UP TORNADOES IN THE NEXT 2-3 HOURS. ISOLATED LARGE
HAIL AND DOWNBURST WINDS WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE WITH THE STRONGER
STORMS.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 1.5 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE
WIND GUSTS TO 50 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO
400. MEAN STORM MOTION VECTOR 27010.
