MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 2174
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0148 AM CST THU NOV 12 2009

AREAS AFFECTED...COAST OF ERN NC

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 120748Z - 120845Z

A MARGINAL TORNADO THREAT WILL LIKELY EXIST AND MAY INCREASE AS
CELLS MOVE ONSHORE IN THE OUTER BANKS OF NC EARLY THIS MORNING.
ALTHOUGH THE THREAT SHOULD REMAIN ISOLATED...A WW CAN NOT BE RULED
OUT ACROSS FAR ERN NC.

THE REMNANTS OF IDA WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE NWD ACROSS ERN NC EARLY
THIS MORNING WITH DISCRETE CELLS LOCATED NEAR MOREHEAD CITY
EXTENDING SWD TO ABOUT 140 STATUTE MILES OFFSHORE. THE LATEST
WSR-88D VWP FROM MOREHEAD CITY NC SHOWS 35 TO 40 KT OF FLOW AT 1 KM
SUGGESTING LOW-LEVEL SHEAR PROFILES WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR STORM
ROTATION. IN ADDITION...OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SUGGESTS THE GREATEST
INSTABILITY REMAINS OFFSHORE BUT SHOULD INCREASE NWD WITH TIME AS
ONSHORE WINDS BRING SFC DEWPOINTS INTO THE MID 60S F. THIS ALONG
WITH COOLING TEMPS ALOFT AND SHOULD GRADUALLY INCREASE INSTABILITY
ACROSS THE OUTER BANKS. AS A RESULT...EXPECT A POTENTIAL FOR
ROTATING CELLS WITH A MARGINAL TORNADO THREAT LATER THIS MORNING
ACROSS THE OUTER BANKS.
