TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 856

PM EDT.

TORNADOES...HAIL TO 0.5 INCH IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND
GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE
AREAS.

MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 55 MILES EAST NORTHEAST OF
CINCINNATI OHIO TO 45 MILES SOUTHWEST OF LONDON KENTUCKY. FOR A
COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH OUTLINE
UPDATE (WOUS64 KWNS WOU6).

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

DISCUSSION...QLCS WITH EMBEDDED MESOCYCLONES HAS RECENTLY
INTENSIFIED PERHAPS IN RESPONSE TO FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH VORTICITY
LOBE ROTATING INTO THE LOWER OH VALLEY. RECENT SURFACE OBSERVATIONS
WITHIN INFLOW AIR MASS ACROSS CNTRL KY HAVE SHOWN GUSTY SURFACE
WINDS...SUGGESTING SOME COUPLING OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER WITH THE
HIGHER MOMENTUM FLOW ALOFT. THOUGH INSTABILITY REMAINS
MARGINAL...THE INCREASED FORCING FOR ASCENT COUPLED WITH EFFECTIVE
SRH OF 400-500 M2/S2 SUGGESTS A RISK FOR TORNADOES AND DAMAGING
WINDS WITH THE QLCS.

AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 0.5 INCH. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE
WIND GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO
