MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0241
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0537 PM CST THU FEB 28 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...NRN/ERN MAINE

CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW

VALID 282337Z - 010330Z

SUMMARY...A SHIELD OF HEAVY SNOW WITH RATES OF 1-2 IN/HR WILL
PERSIST INTO THE EVENING...WITH THE PRECIPITATION EXPECTED TO
GRADUALLY TAPER OFF AFTER 03Z-04Z.

DISCUSSION...A MID-LEVEL SHORTWAVE IMPULSE PIVOTING AROUND A LARGER
CYCLONIC GYRE OVER THE NERN STATES -- PER RECENT MOISTURE-CHANNEL
IMAGERY -- WILL CONTINUE TRACKING WNWWD ACROSS NRN NEW ENGLAND.
MID-LEVEL ISENTROPIC ASCENT LEADING THIS IMPULSE ALONG WITH THE
INFLUX OF MOISTURE FROM AN OFFSHORE WARM CONVEYOR BELT CONTINUE TO
SUPPORT A SHIELD OF HEAVY SNOW ACROSS NRN/ERN MAINE PER RECENT SFC
OBSERVATIONS. SNOW RATES OF 1-2 IN/HR ARE OCCURRING IN ASSOCIATION
WITH THIS ACTIVITY...AND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE THROUGH AROUND
03Z-04Z. THE HIGHEST SNOW RATES WILL OCCUR IN CONJUNCTION WITH
THUNDERSNOW...WITH LIGHTNING DATA SUGGESTING THE OCCURRENCE OF A
COUPLE OF CLOUD-TO-GROUND STRIKES DURING THE PAST HOUR OR SO. LATER
IN THE EVENING...SNOW RATES SHOULD TAPER OFF...AS FORCING FOR ASCENT
ACCOMPANYING THE SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVES FARTHER INTO CANADA.
